WELCOME TO ELDORADO On behalf of Eldorado Polo Club, we would like to welcome you to our 2019 polo season. Eldorado Polo Club has, since 1957, maintained a reputation as the desert’s premier polo destination. To all the teams and players who make Eldorado their winter home, we promise another exciting and competitive season. We know that you will all enjoy the excellent fields and facilities. And to our sponsors, advertisers, spectators and guests, thank you for your continued support and loyalty. The season begins with the opening day of Sunday polo on January 6th. Throughout the season, we will host 12-Goal, 8-Goal, 6-Goal, 4-Goal and Pro Pool league play. Don’t miss out on some of the most competitive polo in the western U.S., including the USPA Rossmore Cup Skins Tournament, USPA Pacific Coast Governor’s Cup, USPA Mack & Madelyn Jason Memorial Tournament, USPA Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup, Fish Creek USPA Constitution Cup, and World Gym Tournament. The Cantina restaurant, located on the east side of field 4, offers members and the public the chance to gather and socialize over food, drinks and amazing views of Eldorado’s spectacular facilities. Martin Aldana is back, along with his staff of friendly faces and good food. The Cantina is open Tuesday through Sunday throughout the polo season. Eldorado’s commitment to polo is managed by a great team of dedicated staff: Diane Thacker, Controller; Debbie Morrison, Assistant Polo Manager; James a’Court, Marketing and Events Director; Miguel Ramos, Field Foreman; Kyle Fargey, Polo Academy Professional Instructor; as well as many other talented support staff. If you are interested in taking up our great sport, we encourage you to contact the Polo & Riding Academy, which offers individual and group instruction for students of all levels. In closing, we would like to recognize our successful, ongoing affiliation with Goldenvoice, the promoters of the Coachella, Stagecoach and Desert Trip concerts. The relationship has proven very beneficial for polo, with many improvements to club infrastructure as well as significant field refurbishment, which has resulted in a premium playing surface for both horse and rider. Your participation as a member, student, spectator or sponsor is greatly appreciated. We are always open to receiving your feedback as we strive to make Eldorado all that it can be, and we wish everyone the very best polo season.

SUNNY HALE MEMORIAL

I

n late summer an impressive group of women polo players gathered at Piocho Ranch in Santa Ynez to celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest woman polo players in the world: Sunny Hale. Hosted by Memo and Meghan Gracida, the invitational event brought together women from far and wide, including Dawn Jones (Texas), Hana Grill (Australia), Kendall Plank (Texas), Danielle Travis (Hawaii), and Mili Sanchez (Argentina). The tournament was a testament to the inspiring contributions that Sunny made to the sport, reflects competitor Kate Weber: “Sunny would have appreciated the competitive polo and the professionalism of the event. The quality of the horses, the fields, and the level

of play was outstanding. Sunny founded the WCT (Women’s Championship Tournament) series so that women from across the world would meet and compete, and this tournament was the perfect tribute to her.” Tournament co-

founder Meghan Gracida invited Sunny’s sister Stormie to attend the weekend event: “It was an honor to have Stormie come out and meet the players and present the winners with their trophies and awards.”

FROM THE GOVERNOR

T

he Pacific Coast Circuit is one of the most successful polo circuits in the country. It is home to a record number of USPA members and Certified Polo Instructors. This means more players, with better training, are carrying our circuit into the future. Between Santa Barbara Polo Club, Eldorado Polo Club and Empire Polo Club, this circuit also has some of the highestranked U.S. polo clubs in our own backyard. Alongside these larger clubs, we have successful arena polo operations at clubs in Orange County, Lakeside, Poway, and Los Angeles, amongst others. The Pacific Coast Circuit continues to host a series of very competitive women’s tournaments; as the fastest growing member populace within the USPA, we can expect more competitive polo from women in these tournaments each year. It is also exciting that Westmount College, the 2-time

22

winner of the Intercollegiate National Men’s Title, now has a women’s polo team. Our Intercollegiate players have great opportunities to further their skills, such as programs operated by Megan Judge at Central Coast Polo Club and at Santa Barbara under Jeff Scheraga. We look forward to many more great things from our NYTS, Intercollegiate and Interscholastic players. On a broader level, several positive USPA initiatives are taking shape. To enhance the connection of the U.S. Polo Association brand and the sport itself, there is a new push towards awarding prize money and matching funds of club awards. There has also been significant restructuring within the USPA and developments such as the horse-breeding registry and committee, which will work towards continued improvement of equine livestock. The Pacific Coast Circuit’s continued success and growth is in the great hands of our

members, volunteers, club staff, instructors and delegates. My best to all those involved in polo, at every level, across California. Daniel Walker, Pacific Coast Circuit Governor

PHILIP IGLEHART AWARD

O

ne of the 2019 inductees into the Polo Hall of Fame is Eldorado’s own Karlene Beal Garber. In February, Karlene will be honored with the Philip Iglehart Award for her outstanding contribution to the sport of polo. Karlene and Dick Garber have been active members of Eldorado Polo Club for decades, and Karlene visits the club every February to award the prestigious Carlton & Keleen Beal Cup to the winner of the memorial tournament named in her parents’ honor. Karlene started playing polo in the early 1990s and had great success throughout her career (winning the Women’s Handicap and the Pacific Coast Circuit Player’ Cup in 1994). She is a long-time supporter of the Polo Training Foundation, which benefits junior polo, polo education and umpire clinics across the U.S. Past recipients of the Philip Iglehart Award include respected Eldorado members Henry Trione, Fred P. Mannix and Paul von Gontard.

PONY PROFILE

M

eet Negra: an 11-year-old black mare owned and played by Ruben Coscia. Negra was born in Lexington, KY and trained by Ruben’s brother Diego Coscia. Negra received Best Playing Pony honors in the 2017 Rossmore Cup Skins Final and was the USPA Eldorado Polo Club Horse of the Year in 2018. What makes Negra so special? “Every chukker is memorable on Negra. I always play her in the 6th because she is a pony that can win games. She has a huge heart and never gets tired. She is handy, fast and super soft.” Look for Negra and Ruben playing for Twin Palms in the 8- and 12-Goal leagues at Eldorado this season.

PLAYER PROFILE Name: Louisa Fikes Team: Lazy 3 Ranch Hometown: Midland, TX When did you start playing polo? My father played polo, so I’ve been involved with the sport my whole life. He introduced me to Eldorado Polo Club when he played in Indio in the 1980s and I was 3 years old. What do you love most about the sport? What I love the most about polo is the support system that comes with it. It becomes a polo family, kind of like a traveling circus! I also love to bring new people to the sport through our homegrown polo school at Midland Polo Club. Who are your polo mentors? I would not be in the sport of polo were it not for my mentors. They include my dad, sister, Corky Linfoot, the Stimmel family and Peter Blake. They stick with me and I with them! Who is your favorite playing pony? No hesitation here, my favorite pony is my stud horse Seraphino. He would literally take a bullet for me.

What is your most memorable game or win? Every time I play a white-pants polo game is memorable, each win or loss teaches me something new, though I’d prefer to win! I know how lucky I am just to be out there!

PEE WEE GENERATION A new batch of polo players is taking to the field at Eldorado, and some of them are barely old enough to hold a mallet! The Pee Wee leadline division is welcoming new little tots each season, with participants starting as young as 2 years old. Joaquin Gonzales brings his dad Matthew’s talent into play on his pony Betty. Ivor Gould is a fierce competitor on his miniature horse Peanut. Charles Sheldon doesn’t miss a game with his favorite pony Bullseye. And look for even more polo kids coming up the ranks in the next few years,

24

including Charles’ sister Catalina, Juan Jose Gonzales and Becky Shaller’s twins Ava and Cruz, Topo and Shannon Mendez’s son Manolo, Ulsysses Escapite’s younger brother Ezekiel, Ivor Gould’s little brother Beau, Emily Morrison and Joe Wayne Barry’s daughter Clementine, Mason and Kaylee Wroe’s new girl Evelyn, Ruben and Anna Coscia’s son Bear, and fielding more than an entire polo team… Ashton and Marisa’s wolf pack of junior players. Don’t miss Pee Wee and Junior polo games this season, Saturday and Sundays on the Cantina field at 8:30 a.m.

SPECTATOR’S GUIDE TO POLO

GAME BASICS

P

olo is a fast-paced sport played on a field that spans a surface area of over nine football fields. The game consists of either four or six chukkers (periods) of seven minutes and 30 seconds. After each goal (which counts for 1 point), the teams switch ends to equalize game conditions. The time clock stops only on the umpire’s whistle; the clock does not stop when a goal is scored, when the ball goes wide of the goal, or when the ball goes over the side. All players must hold the mallet with their right hand but are permitted to hit the ball on either side of the horse. The ball is hit on the broad side of the mallet head (not on the end, as in croquet).

RULES AND TERMS FLAGGER The goal mouth official standing at each end behind the goal posts who flags each successful goal “in” by waving the flag up high, or “out” by waving the flag below the waist.

NECK SHOT The player uses the flexibility of the bamboo mallet shaft to hit the ball under the horse’s neck.

FOUL Any infraction of the United States Polo Association rules of play, ranging from dangerous riding to interrupting the line of the ball.

PENALTY Each infraction of the rules of play is given a rating between one and nine by the umpire, and the severity of the infraction determines the level of penalty awarded (often a free hit for the opposing team).

GOAL Any time the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, at any height, a point is awarded. Teams change ends after each goal is scored, and balls kicked across the line by ponies count!

HOOK A defensive technique in which a player uses his or her mallet to interfere with an opponent’s mallet.

KNOCK-IN When the ball is hit wide of the goal, the defending team is given a free shot, called a knock-in, from the backline or end line.

THROW-IN (OR BOWL-IN) Game play starts at center with an umpire’s underhanded throw-in between the two opposing teams of four players.

LINE OF THE BALL This is the concept that governs traffic on the polo field. Once hit, the ball creates an imaginary line as it travels, and the player or players on this line have the right of way.

UMPIRE Two mounted officials are on the field ensuring safety and enforcing rules.

F.A.Q. What do the numbers on polo jerseys signify? Player positions are represented by the numbers on their jerseys. The Number 1 player assumes an offensive position on the field. Number 2 is often traveling behind Number 1, helping to move the ball up towards goal, while also covering the “quarterback” on the other team—Number 3. The Number 3 player is often the highest-rated player on the team, who focuses on strategy and field advantage, and Number 4 is responsible for guarding the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring.

32

RIDE-OFF A defensive move in which two ponies make contact and press against each other in an attempt to ride the opposing player off the line of the ball.

How many ponies does each player use and what breed are they? Most players bring a pony for each chukker of play, as well as a spare pony or two. They are referred to as “ponies” but are all full-sized horses, mostly thoroughbreds who have both speed and agility. Some ponies also are specifically bred and raised to play polo, and all playing ponies go through several years of training to fine tune their skills.

POLO GEAR HELMET Hard-surfaced, cushioned protection for the player’s head from swinging mallets and racing polo balls.

CLIPPED MANE Ponies have roached (or clipped) manes to eliminate interference with the player’s reins during the game.

BRIDLE Leather strapping and a copper or metal bit that provides control in steering and stopping.

POLO SADDLE Fitted and secured closely to the horse’s back and withers, saddles are relatively flat and have little padding under the leg, allowing for maximum movement. BRAIDED TAIL Ponies tails are braided and secured for less obstruction to mallets during the game.

DRAW REINS Attached to the bit and the saddle, these reins enhance control over the pony.

BREASTPLATE Leather strap that prevents the saddle from slipping backwards during the game.

KNEE PADS Protection for the player’s knees during play, especially during ride-offs.

POLO WRAPS Support for the pony’s legs and protection for tendons from the ball.

GIRTH Leather and elastic strapping that fits behind ponies’ front legs and secures on each side of the saddle to hold it securely in place.

POLO MALLET A flexible bamboo shaft with a hardwood head angled to allow for a full swing flush to the ground. Mallets come in different lengths to accommodate for the height of the ponies.

All Day Rosé

The VIP Experience

Whispering Angel is a favorite amongst celebrities, polo players and avid spectators alike. Order a bottle and enjoy all day rosé at your next Eldorado polo match. Whispering Angel can be found in the Clubhouse and at The Cantina at Eldorado throughout the winter polo season. Exclusive parties featuring Whispering Angel are also hosted for players, sponsors and their special guests in the VIP tent overlooking Field 1 and in the Clubhouse.

W

hispering Angel is the world’s most influential rosé. Produced at Château d’Esclans in the heart of Provence, bottles of the storied wine are featured and served everywhere from Hollywood affairs and food and wine festivals, to popular equestrian, music and lifestyle events around the globe.

Ten-Goal Tailgating

There are a handful of ingredients that create the perfect Sunday tailgate: good friends, great food, chilled wine and the pounding hooves of high-stakes polo on the horizon. Just be sure to choose a field-side location that won’t have you looking directly into the sun. Bring chairs, rugs, tables, tents… the sky is the limit when it comes to the perfect tailgate! On a hot day, make sure to have plenty of ice on hand to keep the rosé chilled. The subtly dry fresh fruit of Whispering Angel pairs well with a variety of food, but the most popular polo tailgate pairings are beets and blue cheese, grilled seafood and sausage, summer pastas, or spicy ceviche. Bon Appetit!

The El Paseo district, which stretches over one mile from Monterey/Highway 74 on the west to Portola Ave. on the east includes over two hundred businesses covering nine distinctly different blocks of art, fashion, fine dining, entertainment and leisure. There are big brands on the avenue as well as small local retailers tucked behind dozens of corners. There’s fine dining to savor on warm desert evenings , or quaint eateries to enjoy for coffee, breakfast or brunch. And there’s every personal and professional service offered that you can imagine, and a lifetime of art and collectibles to discover. There’s so much more to the desert valley than mountain vistas, music festivals, world-class golf and international polo. El Paseo is alive with activity year-round: let your journey of desert discovery begin…

OUT & ABOUT The aesthetic beauty of El Paseo makes every day an indulgence. Stroll about the shops and boutiques on foot and take in the sights and sounds one block at a time. Or travel more ground in the courtesy shuttle, which covers the entire shopping and dining district. To catch a free ride on the open-air yellow cart is an integral part of the El Paseo experience, getting you to your next destination in comfort and ease with the gentle desert air blowing through your hair.

APRÈS THE GAME Unwinding after a day at the polo club or on the golf course is essential. Several El Paseo destinations offer all-day happy hour, and over two dozen restaurants put forward a menu for every mood – from Mexican or Thai to a master chef-prepared dining Extravaganza. Live music also sets the scene Thursdays and Sundays at Sullivan’s Steakhouse, Fridays and Saturdays at Mitch’s on El Paseo, and nightly at Mastro’s Steakhouse.

WHAT’S NEW ON THE AVENUE Ask any visitor to the district… there’s simply too much to explore in one day. An overnight or extended stay is mandatory at Hotel Paseo, the first new luxury hotel in Palm Desert in over 30 years, offering 150 rooms and suites - including a 1950 Airstream Trailer! Private balconies, pool cabanas, a spectacular spa and the chef-driven restaurant AC3 make this boutique-style hotel perfect for vacations and staycations alike. Wander out from your luxury suite for a taste of sushi art at the new Domo Sushi, then visit the latest desert hotspot: the 1920’s inspired lounge Libation Room. At this contemporary speakeasy, enjoy classic cocktails and libations, or try the drink of the moment: fresh-pressed juice topped with botanical vodka. Dress to impress and don’t miss out on the amazing oysters or live music; this is the spot to be when the sun goes down on El Paseo. If you are more of a daylight tripper, make a move over to the recently expanded Grayse boutique or find that perfect resort ensemble for him or her at the new Trina Turk and Mr. Turk boutique.

“The most scenic polo field you’ll experience.”

WORDS FROM THE WISE The husband and wife team of Corky and Kathy Linfoot have a combined total of more than 100 years of equine experience. Former 7-goal player Corky has won two U.S. Opens, four Pacific Coast Opens and multiple tournaments abroad. Kathy has been teaching riding since age 14 and has been a professional polo videographer for several decades. Together they have conducted more than 100 polo clinics across four continents and have trained, owned and sold several bestplaying ponies including Polo Hall of Fame inductee Magazin, and USPA Horse of the Year Award winners Beckon (2014) and Corcha (2013). Exclusively for Eldorado Polo Magazine, the Linfoots expertly identify and solve some of the most common issues and challenges facing players both new and old to the sport of polo: horsemanship, getting into the game, a losing record and field dynamics.

ISSUE: HORSEMANSHIP SOLUTION: RIDE BETTER AND RESPECT THE ANIMAL Polo can be divided into three aspects: riding, hitting and strategy. Most players spend the VAST amount of their time and energy carrying a mallet and hitting the ball around. During their practice game sessions, they are usually given a “job” or “responsibility” that applies to their understanding of team strategy. Unfortunately, the least amount of time is spent on the first tier of commitment—RIDING. No matter how well you hit the ball or how well you understand the game, if you cannot get where you want to go—in control—then you will not be able to consistently hit the ball when, where and how you want. The quickest way, with the least amount of economic input, to improve your game is to learn to ride better. Players need to learn to ride with two hands on the reins. Stopping, turning, rating and helping balance the horse can all be done more consistently at greater variations of speed when you use two hands. The amount of time within a 7 1/2-minute chukker that a player actually spends on the ball is very limited. Therefore, there is no reason not to help the horse with both hands, especially when the horse may be fatigued towards the end of the chukker. Another component of improved horsemanship is RESPECT for the animal. Polo should not be rough on horses, and players do not need to use their horses as weapons. Alongside dogs, horses are probably the most tolerant, generous, forgiving animals on the planet—just watch the way they carry the kids around in junior polo. Players need to respect these remarkable animals from the start, alongside learning the game. Junior players, beginners, seasoned players, grooms and all those in contact with the loyal, intelligent ponies that allow us to play polo need to demonstrate complete respect for the animal involved.

60

ISSUE: GETTING INTO THE GAME SOLUTION: INVEST IN KNOWLEDGE New people getting into the sport need to adopt a business-like approach. Don’t get upset and disgruntled if your time and money do not yield your desired goals. Look at the situation and be truthful to yourself. Did I know what I wanted? Did I find out if the people I was associating with could provide it? Did we work together to reach my goals? Are my expectations realistic? If you are new to polo, go into a place like the Cantina with paper and pencil and ask 5 or 10 people who they recommend doing business with. Then compare your lists. This could pertain to taking lessons, buying horses, hiring a pro, etc.

ISSUE: A LOSING RECORD SOLUTION: IMPROVEMENT, SELF-ANALYSIS AND COACHING Repetition of the same circumstances will result in the same outcome. We need to determine: 1) how to get a better performance; and 2) what we really want to accomplish, for example, winning a throw-in, hitting a free shot, scoring at a higher percentage. Now we must examine what is NOT happening. What is stopping us? How do we remedy that? Players often make incredible efforts—emotionally, physically, monetarily—to try to reach their desired goals. But these same people continue to carry on in the same exact manner that has limited their success in previous attempts. Before a change can take place, the player must accept the fact that what he or she is doing is not securing the desired outcome. Rarely can individuals remedy these situations on their own. We believe that outside observation and input is the shortest path to understanding what is stopping you from achieving better results. Coaching from proven individuals is utilized in virtually every sport to a greater degree than it is in polo.

ISSUE: FIELD DYNAMICS SOLUTION: PREPARATION AND PLANNING If you are playing on a team and wish to be successful, there must be pre-game preparation involving all four players. At a bare minimum, this pre-game planning should establish positional commitments, throw-in commitments, knock-in commitments, and both offensive and defensive free shot commitments. Pre-game preparation must also entail planning lineups of horses for each player. For example, do not have your two better free shot hitters riding horses in the same chukker that have problems going up to the free shot. And don’t have horses that don’t go into the lineups going in the same chukker or ride all your slowest horses in the same chukker. The objective is to create a lineup that helps mitigate limiting aspects of your teammates' horses and enhance the creation of team unity in livestock. These are the basics that MUST be covered.

Interview

THE POLO WAY OF LIFE The Sheldon family experience all the joys of polo together. There are the year-round tournaments, exciting wins and best playing pony prizes. There’s junior polo and the tight-knit community of friends that come together each season. And then there’s the opportunity to work and travel across the country. Behind the scenes, the Sheldons also face some of polo’s unseen challenges, like trying to secure long-term professional playing jobs in a competitive market and constantly moving and adapting to new polo clubs, team dynamics and temporary homes. Imagine packing and moving four people, two dogs and a dozen polo ponies from California to Texas to New York twice a year! But there are no complaints from this young polo professional and his household—they wouldn’t trade their family-style polo life for the world.

62

Q How did the Sheldon family come to be? A Dani: We met at Nationals for Intercollegiate polo when we were 19 years old. Jared likes to say he called “dibs” on me—he even uses words like “love at first sight” [she laughs]. We started dating about a year after we met and have been together for 11 years and married for five years. Our son Charles is turning four years old this winter and our daughter Catalina is two. Q When did you “go pro,” and who are some of your mentors? A Jared: I played professionally for the first time when I was 17 years old and I was a B-rated player. My dad was instrumental in getting me started. Along the way, I have been lucky to receive guidance from many amazing players and coaches like Santi Trotz, Corky Linfoot and Steve Crowder.

Q What is the most memorable game or win of your career so far? A Jared: My most memorable game unfortunately ended badly. I was playing on the Grants Farm team in the Pacific Coast Open finals in 2012, and we were winning by 6 goals after the 4th chukker. Then we lost in overtime! It was a hard defeat. One of my most memorable wins was on the International Field at Eldorado in the Skins tournament semi-final. I was playing with Ron Mathison, Marcelo Abbiati and Santi Trotz, and I scored my first-ever overtime goal on my first and favorite horse as a professional—Cheeky. Q How has the polo community impacted your lives? A Dani: So many people in the polo community are like family to us. Corky and Kathy Linfoot have been incredibly supportive over the years, as has the Cobb family. A day doesn’t go by that Jared, Remy Muller, Patrick Uretz and Jesse Bray don’t talk or text each other, and Peter Blake is a great friend and the Godfather to our children. Our extended polo family is ever growing and changing. Moving so many different places has made us open-minded and accepting of others, and each year we meet and grow close to new people. That’s the beauty of polo, because we all travel and live the same lifestyle; for the most part, we all support and open our arms to everyone. Q What are some of the challenges of being a full-time traveling polo mom and wife? A Dani: So much packing! Moving our kids and dogs and horses involves packing up a ton of stuff and trying to fit it into only the tack room of the horse trailer and the cars we drive. It can also be challenging to establish a routine in each place that fulfills everyone’s needs. Each polo club Jared plays at has its own rhythm and culture.

Q What are some polo “life lessons” you have learned along the way? A Dani: The biggest life skill polo teaches us again and again is how to adapt. Our lives are constantly changing and there is beauty and hardship in that. Polo has also taught us to become better communicators and partners. And that you don’t need as many physical things as you think you do! Q What keeps the Sheldons excited about polo? A Dani: Jared’s passion really drives our family. We love to be there with him, and his love for the game is infectious. The kids both ride and play Pee Wee. They look up to him and share his passion. Polo is our life. It’s the place we work, the people we love, and the life we share. We get to experience so much together as a family. Our kids visited 20 states before their fourth birthdays. We have taken them to more zoos, aquariums, county fairs, and museums than most adults have been to. We all get to spend more time outside than most people do, and even when Jared is at work, we can be with him. It’s a wonderful way to raise a family. Q What do you want to be when you grow up? A Charles (4 years old): A polo player. Q What do you love most about playing polo? A Charles: To lope and go fast Q Who is your favorite pony and why? A Charles: Bullseye. He’s special because I’ve never had a pony before. Catalina (2 years old): Sasha. Because. Dani: I think Catalina likes Sasha because she gets to ride with daddy and go fast!

THE MAN BEHIND THE MICROPHONE

that spectators come out and have a good time. I use a “tell it like it is” approach and I try to keep the commentary upbeat and educational. And I love it when people come up to me and tell me how much fun they had because they understood what was going on. Q What keeps you passionate about Sunday polo? A What keeps me passionate about Sunday Polo at Eldorado is exactly that—it’s Sunday Polo at Eldorado! This is what it’s all about—to play on the number 1 field. Most players remember their very first game on Field 1 on Sunday at 2 p.m. It’s no different with me and I love to be a part of it. Often, when a player is on Field 1 for the first time, I’ll refer to it as their first time in the show – a baseball term that I think relevant. Q Do you have one special game that stands out in your memory? A My most memorable game occurred some time ago, around 2005. It was in April after the main season was over; it might have been the Donegal Cup. The teams were Craig Steinke’s Storm Cat, with Rob Yackley, Miguel Torres and a young Doug Blumenthal, playing against Lauren Beal-Sherry, Shelly Geiler, Diego Cossio and Mariano Gutierrez—I think it was the BTA team. It was an extremely wide-open game—hit and run and no fooling around with the ball—with the final score of 14–12 to favor BTA. What was neat about this contest is that the first and last goals were scored on 30-yard open goal penalties and the rest—all 24—were from the field. In the final minute, with Storm Cat down by one goal, Yackley took a chance inside his own 40-yard line and crossed the right-of-way. His shot went at least 50 yards downfield and if he hadn’t been called, there is no doubt in my mind that he would have scored to tie the game. To this day I remember that 8-Goal game. It was a great example of how polo should be played, and every player contributed.

Tony Gregg is the man behind the microphone at Eldorado Polo Club. He is an important part of the Eldorado family, making the game accessible to huge crowds of spectators throughout the polo season. Tony educates and entertains his listeners and guides them through exciting polo matches taking place in front of the Clubhouse on Sundays, and the Cantina on Saturdays. Q How did your career as a polo announcer begin? A I first started announcing games at the Calgary Polo Club in the late 80s. My father played polo in Calgary from the time I can remember, and as youngsters my brother and I would hotwalk horses. Eventually we started to play, and I made my first trip down to Eldorado in December of 1984. I started announcing games at Eldorado in 1987, including some of the U.S. Open games that fall. Due to circumstance, I was asked to announce the final game of that Open and that’s when I think my career started to take shape. Q How do you make polo accessible to newcomers? A There is a lot to learn about the sport. At the start of every game, I try to inform people that if they don’t know anything about polo, it doesn’t matter and that by the time we are finished, they will understand the basics. I explain the game as it is taking place, so that the public come to know what they are seeing throughout the course of the game. Viewers enjoy the game much more when they understand what they are watching, and its important

64

Q What aspect of the sport have you seen change over the years? A A lot has changed in polo over the years, but the one thing that I think has affected the game as much as anything is the decreased use of the backhand. Today it has become common to stop and turn with the ball instead of backing it. In my opinion, nothing can turn the game around as quickly as a well-placed backhand pass. As well as opening up play, backing the ball is less strenuous on horses. Q What should spectators pay attention to on their next visit to Eldorado? A I think one of the most important things for people to remember is that many of the players they are watching are professionals and are paid to play by the patrons or sponsors—not unlike athletes in other pro sports. The patrons or sponsors are playing on the teams with the pros, and this is unlike most other sports. It’s also important to pay attention to the horses. The horse is 75 to 85 percent of a player’s game—if you can’t get to the ball, you can’t hit it. Like the players, some horses are better than others. Watch the ponies and you’ll understand. And lastly, listen to the announcer! He’s there to help you enjoy the game and the Sunday polo experience. If you have a question, don’t be afraid to approach him and ask. He’ll be glad to help—at least this one will.

A role model for many emerging young polo pros, Santi generously shares his vast polo knowledge with his contemporaries. Jesse Bray describes Trotz as one of his mentors, who helped him take his game to the next level: “Santi taught me to think through the play, to anticipate how it would go.” Team USPA member Jim Wright has benefitted from Santi’s advice both on and off the polo field: “His guidance during the game and his pre- and post-game analysis are unbelievable. He also shares great advice about how to navigate the polo industry with integrity.” When polo people describe Santi, they often refer to his integrity. He treats fellow players and opponents with equal respect, whether it’s his long-time sponsor and friend, Geoff Palmer, or the Duke of Cambridge Prince William, whom he played alongside in 2011. Look for polo master Santi on Field 1 on the Antelope polo team in 2019. When he’s not winning games or coaching teams, Santi can be found on the sidelines or exercise track, alongside his wife, Josefina, and his four daughters, Valentina, Marina, Celina and Jazmin.

Santiago Trotz was born in Buenos Aires to an established polo family: his grandfather, father and two brothers are all polo players. Over the past 25 years, Santi’s professional career has taken him from his home in Argentina to England, France, India and the United States. Trotz’s list of wins and accomplishments is extensive: the Skins tournament at Eldorado; the Pacific Coast Open in Santa Barbara; and numerous other trophies as part of the Antelope, Mansour, Duende and Barossa polo teams, to name a few. Santi has received countless MVP and Best Playing Pony awards, and he reached the Tortugas Final, the first leg of the Argentine Triple Crown, with La Espadana. Santi is widely respected by players as the ultimate teammate, captain and game strategist. This reputation has made him an institution at both Santa Barbara Polo Club and Hurlingham Polo Club in Argentina, where he manages a competitive high-goal circuit each Fall.

MARCELO ABBIATI Marcelo’s success has endured for decades due to his amazing horsemanship and natural talent for the game, mixed with an unassuming and poised demeanor. If you ask Marcelo which worldrenowned players he would select for this dream team, he would graciously decline and instead chose to play on a team that includes his two daughters, Sofia and Delfina. You will be equally hard pressed to get him to deliberate on his long run of success in the sport; he declares his greatest achievement to be “life-long polo friendships” made along the way. One such friend, Ron Mathison, describes his appreciation for Marcelo on many levels: “Marcelo is first and foremost a great friend. On the polo field he’s a consummate professional and a true general. He’s a gifted horseman whose drive and competitive spirit are legendary, but when the game is over, win or lose, he is a gracious gentleman who knows how to make people smile.”

Captain of the Highwood Polo Team, Marcelo Rodriguez Abbiati has over 30 years of experience in polo and achieved a handicap rating of 7 goals. Marcelo is originally from Bella Vista, Argentina, where he learned polo from his father Horacio. He now resides in Calgary, Canada, with his wife Susan and makes Eldorado his winter home. Marcelo has played polo all over the world, including the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, China and Spain. He spent seven polo seasons playing at the most prestigious clubs in France, located in Bordeaux, St. Tropez and Paris. Marcelo also represented Canada in a series of international tournaments: he captained the Canadian team to win the Federation of International Polo (FIP) Zone Qualifier in 2007; he led the team to contend against seven other nations in the FIP World Cup Championship in 2008; and he was captain of the 22-Goal Canadian team in international test matches in South Africa. Marcelo has captained teams for many respected long-time polo sponsors like Ron Greene, Bob Fell, Dave Dollinger, and Ron Mathison, in both Calgary and California. One of Marcelo’s favorite places to play has always been Eldorado: “I like the fields, the history, the pros, the players and the ambience of the club.” One career highlight was beating out 32 teams to win the Governor’s Cup at Eldorado in 1993, alongside teammates Trudy Gutierrez, Bob Hadstrong and Scott Walker.

Polo Style Best friends Rene Dell’Acqua, Valerie Powers Smith and Louise Neyer share a passion for horses, adventure, fashion and fun. Their shared enthusiasm landed them at Eldorado Polo Club in January of 2018, where they started weekly lessons, and wouldn’t you know it—they fell in love with the sport! After a dozen lessons and a few sore thigh muscles, these three ladies were off to the races… or more aptly, the polo games. Their shared goal for the 2019 season is to participate in the Eldorado Polo Academy Coaching League—a fun and competitive way to learn the game at a slower speed. The polo divas (as they are fondly referred to around the polo club!) are all esteemed professionals in the Coachella Valley: Rene is a respected General and Cosmetic Dentist; Valerie is a Partner with SBEMP, LLP, Attorneys-at-Law; and Louise is President of Louise M. Neyer Interiors, Inc., a world-renowned, full service interior design and building firm. The chic, fun and energetic style that these ladies bring to polo is infectious! From field to fashion to festivals, they define Polo Style in the desert.

Good luck to all teams at

ELDORADO POLO CLUB in 2019

From the Antelope Polo Team and the Palmer Family

THE WINNER’S CIRCLE TOURNAMENTS & LEAGUES The Eldorado polo season is packed full of exciting polo tournaments and events, at a variety of different levels. To appreciate tournament levels, you need a basic understanding of the player handicap system. All players receive a handicap between C (beginner player) and 10 (the best in the world!). Unlike golf, in polo the better you play, the higher your handicap. In a 4-Goal tournament, the sum of all players’ handicaps equals 4. And in 8- and 12-Goal tournaments, the sum of the players’ handicaps equals 8 and 12, respectively. The USPA Pacific Coast Circuit Governor’s Cup is played at the 6-Goal level and the always exciting Skins tournament, where prize money is earned in each chukker of the final game, is played at the 12-Goal level. Eldorado also hosts a Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) Qualifier, whereby the winners of the A and B flights earn qualifying points towards competing in a national event. Similarly, the National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) offers youth players the opportunity to qualify for national finals. The Pro Pool is a casual weekend league whereby players sign up for teams that include one professional player (who acts as the team captain). Players are often grouped into a pool, and names may be drawn to make teams.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER & BEST PLAYING PONY AWARDS The MVP award is presented to the player who makes a significant contribution to their team and demonstrates excellent skill in the final game (relative to their handicap rating). Similarly, the Best Playing Pony award is presented to a pony who has an outstanding performance in the tournament final.

MEMORIAL TOURNAMENTS The Jason Memorial Tournament honors Mack and Madelyn (Gilmore) Jason, who were part of the founding group of member-owners at Eldorado Polo Club. Their daughter Lyn Jason Cobb and her husband Herschel Cobb, along with their daughter Madelyn Jason Cobb, remain active supporters of Eldorado and are joined by family and friends in celebrating and presenting the tournament prizes each season. The Carlton & Keleen Beal Memorial Tournament is presented by Karlene Beal Garber in honor of the significant contributions made by her late father and mother to Eldorado and the sport of polo across the country. The Fish Creek Cup is presented by Fred and Li-Anne Mannix as a tribute to Fred’s Fish Creek polo operation and its decades of success and contribution to polo in California, Florida, Canada and abroad. The Fish Creek tournament is also played as part of the Junior polo tournament series, in addition to the Joe Barry and Artie Cameron Memorials, to commemorate the years of support offered by these generous members to junior players.

ANNUAL AWARDS The Robert Skene Award celebrates the contributions made by this legendary 10-Goal player to the sport of polo in California, and is presented to the player who shows the most improvement over the course of the season. The Alonzo ‘Chango’ Galindo Award recognizes a person who makes a special contribution to the club, and who has a positive influence on club staff, members or supporters. The Ronai White trophy, generously donated by the patrona of the Casa Blanca Polo team, recognizes a sponsor who exhibits outstanding leadership, commitment and sportsmanship. And the Sunny Hale Award is presented to a female player who contributes to the sport and exemplifies the positive and encouraging spirit of Sunny Hale both on and off the field.

SPONSORS & AFFILIATES The World Gym Tournament is sponsored by the Uretz Family and honors Mike Uretz’s career as CEO of World Gym International. Long-time members and presenting sponsors Mike and Claudia Uretz have enjoyed watching each of their 4 boys participate in the sport from Pee Wee polo all the way up to the 12-Goal league over the course of the past 20 years. Presenting sponsor Ketel One was on-hand to award prizes to the much-anticipated 2018 Opening Day game winners in early January, and throughout the season, the USPA acted as an affiliate naming sponsor to several tournaments, providing leadership and prizes for players across a variety of leagues. For more information about tournament naming and presenting sponsorship opportunities at Eldorado Polo Club, contact James a’Court at 760.831.9696 or james@eldoradopoloclub.com.

Stretching over 220 hectares, La Patrona Polo & Equestrian Club is set against the backdrop of mountain vistas, palm trees and a rich jungle landscape. The club was designed by awardwinning architect Rodrigo Peyret and the architectural, landscape and water features make a visit to this destination unforgettable. POLO ON THE PRAIRIE

P

olo on the Prairie is no ordinary polo match and music concert. It’s a West Texas tradition. Hosted at the Musselman Brothers’ Lazy 3 Ranch on a historic hay pasture transitioned into a regulation-size grass polo field, Polo on the Prairie dates back more than 30 years. The event has raised more than 7 million dollars for the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas—a point of pride for polo players, music lovers and spectators alike. Featuring country headliners like Ryan Bingham, Jerry Jeff Walker and Kevin Fowler, the afternoon and evening event showcases polo, a chuckwagon-style barbeque dinner, and fireworks to cap off the night. Players travel to Texas from all over the United States and abroad, donating their time and bringing equipment, horses and staff to play and support the annual fundraiser. mdanderson.org

JUNIOR POLO

J

unior Polo has a long history at the Eldorado Polo Club. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, high-goal polo ruled the club, and many sponsors, players and their families made Eldorado home for the winter season. What grew from the dedication of this polo-minded group is a legacy of Junior Polo that continues to this day. The 2018 season at Eldorado saw over 50 junior players compete in a series of exciting tournaments: the Fish Creek Memorial Tournament, the Joe Barry Memorial Tournament, the Artie Cameron Memorial Tournament, the Polo Training Foundation Tournament, and two National Youth Tournament Series Qualifiers.

MEMORIAL

JOHN BERNARD LEARY SR.

J

ohn Leary Sr. was born November 23, 1936 and was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. His parents, George and Evelyn Leary, were second-generation immigrants, and John was proud of his humble beginnings living in the Mount Erie Projects, a low-income Irish neighborhood. John attended a catholic primary school and graduated from a military high school. He was an excellent student, active football player and boxer, and was awarded the NROTC Scholarship to study Engineering at Marquette University. But John greatly admired a family friend who was a physician and decided to switch majors, and his medical studies took him to University of Minnesota. John met the love of his life, Dorothy Margaret Bame, while she was a nurse and he was an orderly. They were married in Dorothy’s hometown of Jamestown, North Dakota and were married fifty-eight loving and adventure-filled years. Together they raised six children: John Jr., Shelley, Stacey, Craig, Krissy and Heather. John joined the Army after medical school. He was a Green Beret, a Lieutenant Colonel, and was awarded several medals including the Legion of Merit and two Bronze Stars. John’s military career took the family to Kentucky, Hawaii, Texas, North Carolina, Vietnam, and Denver. In the late 1960s he retired from the military and started

his 25-year radiology practice in Eugene, OR at Sacred Heart Hospital. In Eugene, John bought land and horses and eventually took up a serious interest in polo. All the family were keen to ride and learned to play, except for Dorothy who was fearful of horses. They began to move a string of horses down to Indio, CA, where the family put down roots at JBL (now G & L) Ranch near Thermal. Meeting professional player Carlos Galindo in California in the early 1980s had a great influence on John’s polo and his family—they became long-time partners in a horse training operation and Carlos married Stacey in 1985. One of John’s fondest Eldorado moments was winning the Governor’s Cup in 1985, alongside his daughter Stacey, son Craig and Jimmy Gilstrap. John joined the radiology group at Eisenhower Hospital in the latter part of his career and worked until he was 79. He loved his work and would spend leisure time golfing. But John’s greatest pleasure in life was his 18 grandchildren. He loved to travel and watch his grandkids play their sport of choice, whether it was basketball, baseball, soccer or polo. When surrounded by family, one of John’s favorite sayings was “Life doesn’t get much better than this!” He will be greatly missed by his family and his many fond friends at Eldorado.

MEMORIAL SETH HERNDON

S

eth Woodruff Herndon, Jr. passed away on July 15, 2017. Seth was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Tulsa University with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He had a very successful career in the oil and gas industry and a polo career that extended over 40 years. Seth was a member of Eldorado Polo Club, and the patron of the Southern Hills polo team. At his peak, he achieved a rating of 4 Goals, and in 1980, he won the U.S. Open with the Southern Hills team of Jake Sieber, Tommy Wayman, and Ruben Gracida. Seth also won the North American Cup in 1981, the C.V. Whitney Cup in 1982 and the America Cup in 1988. Seth served as the USPA Pacific Coast Chairman for 8 years. He had a true passion for polo and was known for his spirit, sportsmanship, and passion for ponies. Fred Mannix remembers Seth as “a tough competitor and a great contributor to polo. He was on the Rating Committee on the West Coast for many years and did a sterling job.” Corky

Linfoot recalls playing both with and against Seth: “Seth Herndon was a solid 4-Goal player who played for the love of the game. He was an honorable man both on and off the field, and always came well mounted.” One of Seth’s favorite ponies, Electric Charge, was the winner of the Hartman Trophy in 1981 and was inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 2005. Seth played Electric Charge, an Oklahoma-bred mare, in numerous high-goal tournaments, including two chukkers in both the final and semi-finals of the U.S. Open. Seth was married to the love of his life, Margaret (Muggy) for over three decades. They lived in the Indian Wells, CA, area for their entire marriage and were almost inseparable. Muggy was Seth’s biggest fan and supporter, in polo and throughout life. As his polo career slowed down, Seth enjoyed golf and fishing. Muggy now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma and shares these recent thoughts: “It’s been well over a year, but I still miss Seth terribly. He was such a wonderful man, and a wonderful husband.”
