Smith Galleries play a fundamental role in the life of Davidson College. The Galleries support the academic mission of the College through the presentation, interpretation, and discussion of primarily contemporary artworks in all media. Gallery exhibitions and programs nurture individual thinking, develop visual literacy, and inspire a lifelong commitment to the arts.

The Davidson College Department of Art, the Van Every/Smith Galleries and the Davidson College Art Collection Advisory Committee are pleased to present Collected: Works in Alumni Art Collections. The exhibition, organized and arranged in conjunction with 2015 Davidson College reunion events, features approximately 50 works of art, spanning several centuries and encompassing a diverse range of media including photography, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Lia Newman, Director/Curator, linewman@davidson.edu

The exhibition afforded us an opportunity to spend many enjoyable hours talking with or visiting a number of Davidson College alumni. We were able to view some art collections firsthand and learn the specifics of the kinds of work individuals were drawn to and why they initially began collecting art. This exhibition represents only a small portion of the potential lenders and works available, but our sincere hope is that we will host another exhibition of similar concept in the near future.

From North Carolina-based artists Herb Jackson, Laura Grosch and Ce Scott, to African art objects and works by internationally renowned artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Elaine de Kooning, Nancy Rubins and Eugène Boudin, the exhibition mimics — and embraces — the diversity of collecting interests of Davidson College alumni. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the nearly 20 Davidson families who have generously loaned extraordinary works from their personal art collections to make this exhibition possible.
