fn honor of the c.Jmmunity-wide celebration of Romare Bearden's 100th birthday, the Van Every/Smith Galleries are proud to present the work of acclaimed sculptor Kendall Buster and emerging artist Chris Watts.
Ex:hibitions: '�'-- -- van E\/,>ru GnllPru Renowned artist Kendall Busler is best known for her sculptures and public works that explore the idea of "biological architecture." Inspired by microscopic organisms and cellular structures, Buster realizes these natural forms at colossal scales with high-lech fabrics and a matrix of modular armatures. The resulting installations dwarf and envelope the viewer, thereby altering lhe experience of inner and outer space. As the selected artist for the major sculpture commission in Romare Bearden Park in Charlotte's historic Third Ward, this exhibition focuses on Kendall Buster's recenl forays into permanent installations of monumental sculpture in pubUc spaces. The gallery exhibition will feature numerous site plans, diagrams, working drawings, videos, and seale models of completed commissions for Johns Hopkins University. Princeton University, and the San Francisco International Airport, among others. Outside the gallery, Buster's monumental White Highrise, 2005, will be installed in the Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center's atrium throughout the fall semester.
Edward M. Smith r.: .. A native of North Carolina, emerging artist Chris Watts grew up with his grandparents fn the racially progressive city of San Diego, California. He later returned to Charlotte. North Carolina, lo study art, where he continues to live and work. Watts remixes imagery from vintage popular culture magazines (Jet, Ebony, UFE) with paint and collage to comment on the peculiar nature of his present-day social reality in the American south-a sharp contrast to the deeply rooted cultural integration of his west coast upbringing.
