Western Australia’s Art Journal — Artist’s Chronicle
Makers: The Artists, their work, their lives, Episode 1: Hans A…
Makers: The Artists, their work, their lives Episode 1 Features artists with works in the St John of God Murdoch Hospital Art Collection. In this Episode: From his cluttered studio at the University of Western Australia, to the unusual home he built in the Perth Hills, Hans Arkeveld talks about his work in the collection, emigrating from Holland as a child, and his father being forced to work for the Gestapo. Created by the Artist’s Chronicle, commissioned by St John of God Murdoch Hospital.
Editorial This edition, we feature Perth Institute of Contemporary Art’s annual Salon, a feast of contemporary art, by artists either currently based in WA or with strong connections here. The selected artists embraced the theme of the exhibition this year Epic Narratives with gusto. The show opened to the public after the Vernissage, a glamorous opening night exclusively for sponsors and ART1000 or ART5000 donors, who all donated either $1000 or $5000 in exchange for two tickets to attend. Now in its sixth year, the Vernissage is a major fundraising event for PICA. For those wary of parting with the total donation outright, PICA now offers instalment plans. The Salon, based on Paris’ Académie des BeauxArts tradition of exhibiting preeminent painters of the day, also offers works for sale an unusual move for a public institution, but no doubt welcome by artists and collectors. July 29 marks the 125th anniversary of the death of Vincent van Gogh. Though the troubled artist http://www.artistschronicle.com/

struggled with mental health issues and ended his own life, he continues to inspire artists and viewers alike. We cover just some of the exhibitions and events in Europe marking the anniversary, and talk with Ron Dirven, Director of Vincent Van Gogh House in Zundert. The museum is located on the site of Van Gogh’s birthplace (the original home was considered beyond repair and was demolished in 1903, just 13 years after the artist’s death). Our Book Review of Made Up Love Song by Bettina von Zwehl reveals an inconspicuous book which, from its simple cover, could be too easily overlooked. Made Up Love Song is a record of von Zwehl’s output during her residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, her photographic portraits inspired by the miniature portraits and silhouettes within the Museum collection. The Artist’s Chronicle is pleased to announce a partnership with St John of God Murdoch Hospital bringing art directly to patients’ rooms though the first television channel for patients within a hospital in Western Australia. A cornerstone of the project is Makers: the artists, their work, their lives, a series of 30 minute programs created by the Artist’s Chronicle bringing to life artworks within the SJGMH art collection. The score for the series has been created by Audio Chemistry in Melbourne. The project has been approved by the Documentary Australia Foundation, and builds on scientific studies around the world finding art heals by changing a person’s physiology from stress to deep http://www.artistschronicle.com/

relaxation, changing brain wave patterns, affecting the nervous system, hormonal balance and brain neurotransmitters. The Artist’s Chronicle has worked closely with SJGMH Arts Manager Connie Petrillo to bring the project to fruition. By conducting research into the effects of the Makers series on patients we hope to put forward strong evidence for changes in the manner patients currently receive visual care to key organisations such as the Australia Council on Healthcare Standards. Artists such as Hans Arkeveld, Tony Jones, Janis Nedela, Jillian Green and photographer Frances Andrijich will feature in the series.
