â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;It is a challenge to follow a race lasting for hours and stretching across dozens or even hundreds of kilometresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

Covering endurance sport events, such as cycling or running, is one of the most challenging, yet most amazing parts of being a sports photographer. Those races often take place in the most beautiful places of the world, from raw and inhospitable mountains all the way down to urban city centers – so every event is different, offering new opportunities, motives and landscapes. Still it is a challenge to follow a race lasting for hours and stretching across dozens or even hundreds of kilometres with a lot of camera gear, finding the best photo spots and capturing the emotions and fights at the right moment. Preparation is everything: What kind of pictures will I be looking for and what gear do they require? How does the course look like, where are the most iconic spots and how will I get around? What is the timetable, who are the favourites and when will the winners arrive at the finish? How about the weather? With so many things to consider, there is no routine.

Still, there are some things I never forget to bring along: Two camera bodies so I don’t have to change lenses all the time, and for a spare body just in case something unpredictable happens. A super-wide-angle lens for spectacular views of the surroundings and a telephoto lens for catching the athletes close-up. A flash to conquer the sun and rain gear to deal with bad weather. Enough memory cards and full batteries are mandatory. With such an array of necessary kit, the requirements for my bags are clear: they must carry a lot of equipment and still allow me to be highly flexible in various situations. I often travel with two pieces: a trolley, that I can leave in the car or at a safe place in the media center of an event with gear I don’t urgently need all the time. It often contains a laptop, spare parts, mounts or additional batteries. These things altogether can be quite heavy, so a trolley allows me to carry it around safe and easy. For the actual race a messenger bag allows me to transport all the important cameras

and equipment even in alpine regions or on a motorbike. This kind of bag is comfortable, flexible and give me fast access to the gear I need – which is extremely important, as special moments in sports often take just a few seconds and no athlete will wait for me to get ready. The bags should not only make me fast and mobile, but they must also be flexible themselves. Gear changes from event to event, so they have to allow me to put varying loads and sizes in it. And most of all, they must be strong and protect my gear from hits, water and dust. Most of my camera gear is weather sealed, but for an hour-long event, I prefer carrying it in a bag with additional rain cover. When the equipment is packed, it’s time to go. With the messenger bag on the one shoulder and my main camera on the other, I start looking for the pictures that represent an event in the best way. As a marathon is 42.2 kilometres and typical bicycle races are at least three times as long, the logistics are essential. 9.

Start and finish are often â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not always â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in the same area, but if I just focus on those, I will miss the best parts of the race. While city marathons usually pass the most iconic landmarks, races out of the city often lead through beautiful landscapes. I try to take advantage of that, so I need to be there before the athletes are. A bike race can only be covered with motorised support, while for most running events a bicycle is my first choice. The possibilities for pictures are often endless: scenic pictures showing the

athletes surrounded by amazing and typical land/cityscapes; small details, such as thrown away water cups on the ground or tensed muscles, closeups of gritted teeth and of course the obligatory finish line photo of the winner. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to focus on the favourites, have eyes on the amateur athletes as well - many of them meet one of the biggest challenges of their life, so emotions are sometimes overwhelming. The most important things to look for are emotions, action and fighting spirit!

There are thousands of events taking place all over the world all year long, from small races organized by local sport clubs to huge city marathons and bike races with several thousands of participants. So if you are interested in sport and action photography, just go for it. As the athletes need to train, so does the photographer. You will never be as close to the action as at such events. With every picture you will get better, find new motives, have new ideas and get closer to the perfect action photo.

Netherlands

France is a stronghold for trail running. The Eco-Trail de Paris offers three long courses that lead runners from the outskirts into the city center, with a backdrop of beautiful nature and city subjects. Even more extreme is the Restonica Trail Run in Corse, where spectacular pictures are guaranteed.

Running in Spain nearly guarantees perfect weather. The Marathon Palma de Mallorca is great to get scenic pictures, as the course passes beaches, the port and most of the sightseeing hotspots. The Madrid Marathon is, right after the Barcelona Marathon, the second biggest in Spain and even held an amateur photo competition in 2013.

The biggest running events are the Amsterdam and Rotterdam Marathon. The athletes pass some of the most scenic parts of the cities, like the Erasmusbrug in Rotterdam or the canals of Amsterdam.

For cycling, of course, La Tour de France! Following the race for a stage is complicated, but if you find your perfect spot before the first gruppettos arrive, it is easier than anywhere else for non-professionals to get iconic photos of a world-class sporting event. The two Haute Route amateur races in the Maritime Alps and the Pyrenees feature some of the greatest French mountain passes within just a week. 12. 12.

La Vuelta is one of pro cycling’s most prestigious Grand Tours. Stages pass the most beautiful parts of Spain, as the Pyrenees, and allow photographers to play with the landscape.

Due to the lack of mountains, bike races in the Netherlands are always special. At the beach bike race Hoek van Holland to Den Helder you can take advantage of this topography and get unique cycling photos. The Amstel Gold Race in Maastricht is a classic bicycle race for pros and amateurs – even with a lot of steep “heuvels”, which are great photo opportunities.

UK The London Marathon is one of the World Marathon Majors, attracting top-class athletes. With the Tower Bridge and Big Ben it also features the most remarkable attractions. Small, but no less spectacular is the High Peak Marathon near Sheffield: Starting in the night, teams cross foggy, snow covered hills and plateaus. The most famous pro cycling race is the multi-stage Tour of Britain. Cycling clubs are very popular throughout the whole UK, so chances are good to find some amateur races close-by.

Like most different types of photography, shooting surfing is, amongst other things, all about timing. Timing a decent swell, tide and wind conditions in order to supply the right waves, timing the light whether it be dawn, dusk or in some cases even the hardest light around noon, and of course timing your shots. Positioning is another important aspect of your shot. This often evolves from not just experience, but using common sense in knowing what you want to see in advance. This also involves being in tune with your subject. A surf photo is often the result of the interaction and cooperation between the surfer and the photographer. It helps to know each other, or to at least have a chat before entering the water in order to level with each other and to brief the surfer on, for instance, what lens and f-stop you are using and in what

way you would like to use the light. During action, the surfer should take these factors into account in relation to the camera, in order to achieve the maximum result in creating an image together. A different type of approach to have, is to just go with the flow and let it all happen as it comes along. Maybe only think of a specific lens you would like to use and in what way. Consider what kind of a feeling you want to ‘share’ and just go to the beach, see what the situation is at that spot at the moment you are there and deal with it in an almost documentary sort of way. To me, both of the two different approaches mentioned above never leave out room for ‘error’ and the unexpected. In the way that it can be good to try to see things out of the ordinary, out of the box, and often even also out of focus. Never be ‘afraid’ to just go for it when you

see something which you think could perhaps become an image the way you saw it at that moment and to try unconventional things. Do not restrict yourself in any way. To give you an example, most surf photographers use wide to extremely wide-angle lenses. Of course, having to shoot at decent speed and often in hollow waves, that is perfectly normal and I quite often do it myself. But my absolute preference lens-wise is to go longer and as open as possible. Not ‘often,’ but always, every session, this leads to a success rate for accurate focusing of about 10 to 20 %. This is because using an 85 mm f 1.2 lens at, say, f 1.8 while shooting moving subjects in a moving environment whilst moving yourself is not an ideal situation for sharp and well focused photographs. Shooting full frame under Dutch skies in the murky waters of the Dutch North Sea, and trying to

create the ‘Aloha feeling in a raincoat,’ as I like to tend to describe it, does not help much either. Then again, when you score a shot, it’s often a ‘proper’ photograph. One can call this work ‘surf photography’ of course. I would like to refer to it as ‘photography of surfing,’ it’s as simple as that. To me, photography is a way of registering a moment in time in order to make people feel what is was like to actually have been present at the moment and place where the picture was taken. To ‘feel what it’s like to be out there.’ ‘To ‘take’ a picture,’ often of a person or something connected to a person. It is nice to not just take the picture, but to then ‘give’ a picture in return. To the person in question and to then also share those images with other people in order for them to see and enjoy as many quality images as possible and become a ‘richer’ person.

A quality image is one that tells a story, is technically well executed, has nice lighting, actually shows you something and, most of all, brings across that feeling of actually being present. Its about feeling… the excitement of going out on location, not knowing (exactly) what to expect, the thrill of good circumstances, the healthy tension when concentrating on getting the shot, the anxiety in hardly being able to wait till you get back in and see what results you have booked, the exhilaration of success, sitting behind your desk and discovering an image that worked out the way you planned it, the beauty in the unexpected ‘unconventional’ shots, and the continual learning process. At the end we are all alike, photographers, bakers, farmers, carpenters and so on, we do what we do and we try to do it at our best. The luxury lies within being able to

do the things where your passion lies and most of all, in feeling good and even having fun in doing so. For this we photographers need both photographic tools and our own way of seeing. The performance of camera equipment is enhanced using a stable, functional, and easy (and fast) to work with tripod. Like the UK, France is known for its vast variety of different surf spots. Most of them are situated along the west coast’s Atlantic ocean, as opposed to the South’s Mediterranean Sea. World famous spots can be found around the town of Biaritz and Hossegor. The latter one hosts the annual stop of the ASP World Tour Surfing.

Except for a few kilometres of coastline in the north, Germany has no real surfable coastline. There is a secret wave there though, created by the incoming and leaving ferry. The wake of the ships creates an ultraclean, sometimes shoulder high wave!

The Dutch North Sea is not known for its surf spots, but sometimes fun surf can be found along the whole coast line. The NK Surftour 2014 stops at Domburg in April, Scheveningen in May and a ‘Mystery location’ in June.

Key events include the ASP World Championships tour, which stops at Hossegor and the Quicksilver Pro, taking place between the last week of August and first week of October. One can expect mind blowing performances by top athletes, including the 11-time world champion Kelly Slater. 66.

In general, German surfers go abroad to surf. For instance, to France, Portugal, Denmark, UK, The Netherlands and more. In Munich there is a standing wave in a river that is being surfed frequently. It is crowded and the locals rule.

Surffrenzy 2014 Wijk aan zee ‘is not a’ contest you cannot miss and takes place one weekend in April. Be there and enjoy the true ambiance of what the joy of surfing is all about! *(Dates depend on swell/surf and can still vary)

Spain

From the Eastern Basque corner on the French border to the most Western tip of Galicia, the whole north coast of Spain is a true Mecca of surf spots. Including the world class break; Mundaka â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a serious, long, powerful, fast left hand wave.

The whole of the UK coastline offers something, from the few reasonably crowded subtropical beach breaks down in the south, to the deserted almost untouched cold reef breaks up in the far North and everything in between that picks up a swell. The UK is a place with an abundance of surf spots to be searched for and found.

Travelling west along the coastline, one will encounter various spots from long board lines to big waves. Then there is the southwest coast of Andalucia, also facing the Atlantic ocean, so it has its fair share of surf spots. Last but not least, the whole Mediterranean coast from the southwest to the northeast has the occasional wave.

Whenever at the spots, please respect the locals!
