One of the most beautiful seasons to visit Japan is undoubtedly the period of spring, when ‘Sakura’ cherry blossoms flourish. It’s a fleeting moment that is very beautiful to photograph. The cherry trees are widely spread throughout Japan, so one must carefully select the best places to go - you cannot visit the whole of Japan in 15 days. ‘Hanami’ (flower viewing), is a social occasion, where one can picnic and have the opportunity to take beautiful pictures. Try parks surrounding castles, which are often illuminated at night. In Kyoto you can see Geishas dressed in their best outfits but also enjoy dance shows such as ‘Miyako Odori’. Japan is a very interesting country for photographers whose interest lies in urban, architecture and street photography, but also those that like to get out to the country side. This is an opportunity to photograph landscapes and mountains covered with cherry blossoms.

Taking photos while travelling Photography is the perfect complement to a trip, and with a digital camera one can pack lightly and see the images instantly. There’s less limitations than with a film camera, where the number of film roles and development costs can prove prohibitive. Freed from these restrictions, it is increasingly easy for an amateur photographer to consider a photo trip and improve their art. Before leaving, it is worthwhile being prepared, taking into consideration what one would like to photograph. For this a “photography road book�, containing the spots to visit and most interesting activities is a good companion. Obviously, one should plan where to stay, how to get around and prepare all the photo gear needed for the photos one wants to capture. Consider accessories such as lenses, a spare battery and a lightweight tripod.

Scouting locations If one knows that a visit to, say, the Chrysler Building is one the cards, then an internet search of the location is worthwhile. An image search, or looking on photography sites indicates how this building can be taken from different angles on the ground, but also from above like from the Empire State Building, the MetLife Building or even from a helicopter. It’s usually better to scout locations out in advance, to save travel time and avoid arriving late at the spot and not having enough time to shoot due to lack of light.
Going to New York is an entirely different experience to Kyoto, but with similar subjects to capture. Again, spring in New York is one of the best seasons to visit - the summer is sultry and the winter icy. A walk through Central Park brings opportunity to indulge in cherry blossoms again, with cityscapes as a backdrop. Manhattan shines exceptional lights on the facades of buildings as the sun begins to rise. A visit the top of the Empire or the Rockefeller Building should top the list, to photograph the sunset over Manhattan at the blue hour. However, tripods are not allowed. In the city, remember to take a wide angle or ultra wide angle with you to photograph the narrow streets of Wall Street. Beyond Manhattan, New Yorkers favour Coney Island, near the sea. Of the many festivals there, the ‘Mermaid Parade’ is great for photography, with tattooed bodybuilders and women dressed in period costumes making for great portraits.

Chosing the right moment Daylight is different in each season - the low sun of winter may never make it above tall skyscrapers in a city. Take note of the time of sunrise and sunset. These ‘magic hours’ are considered the right time for the most beautiful lighting. The blue hour - just before sunrise and after sunset - is one of the most interesting moments in photography. But this period might be very short - in some countries it’s no longer than 30 minutes, regardless of the season. It’s important to know what to expect during a season, or even if there is a ‘best’ season at all. In South India during the monsoon season, it will be difficult at certain times to take photos because of the heavy rain towards the end of the day. But the rain can be advantageous for taking pictures of “real life scenes” in the soaked streets.

Venice, the Italian city of lovers and carnivals, has some very interesting photographic locations if you manage to find your way out of the main pedestrian streets. Small channels are less travelled by tourists yet are packed with charm. The bridges will give you enough height to play with long exposures on the canals. Venice is a very touristy town, however if you wake up early enough the city is yours. You can enjoy the sunrise over St. Mark’s Square, with gondolas and the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in the background. Take this opportunity to stroll and discover the city as it wakes up, have coffee and cake in the small shops where only locals go. Travelling the city by boat will give another view. You can visit the beautiful islands lined with colorful fishermen’s houses.

Luberon France is full of beautiful places, where a photographer can indulge in his art. In the south of France, Provence displays its lavender fields in the heart of the Luberon. The Sénanque Abbey, with its lavender fields in the foreground, makes a particularly great composition. One can get a perfect view of the town of Gordes, while the earthy yellow, orange and white colors of Colorado Rustrel and Roussillon are in their full splendour late in the afternoon.
AROUND FRANCE Sète A little further west, the port city of Sète in Languedoc is a very interesting place to photograph. Great subjects include fishermen at the Thau lagoon, where long exposure photography is an effective technique. At De Meze, photograph the sunrise and sunset on the Mont Saint-Clair. Sète is a city that’s hidden corners beg to be discovered on foot. Those that explore will find the alleys where women talk leisurely whilst extending cloth lines, the stairs in the old Haussmann buildings and the fishermen in the harbour mending their nets and preparing for their next departure to sea. Complete the day with a panoramic view from the Mont Saint-Clair with a sunset at the Étang de Thau. 14.
Brittany Brittany finishes our selection of locations for spring time photography. Its a quiet, magical region, less crowded and perhaps more beautiful than in summer. Heathers are in bloom. For lovers of beautiful spaces, the coast of Brittany features beautiful scenery. A must see is Finistere and all the islands, each more exciting than the next. To name but a few, the island of Ouessant, the peninsula of the Crozon-island, the “La Vielle” lighthouse, the Huelgoat forests or the Arrée mountains. With each click of the shutter, the urge to travel continues to grow.
Preparations before leaving Paper work It’s practical to scan all important papers: passport, visas, insurance, prescriptions, bank cards, plane tickets, and then to send them to oneself as an attached e-mail. In thew case of loss or theft, it’s easier to recover these papers by logging onto a computer in an internet café and the administrative procedures will be quicker. Saving photos It’s important to decide before leaving how to save your photos. There are a few options: different memory cards, saving onto an external hard drive, on a computer, or saving in the virtual cloud. A handy tip is to number memory cards before leaving, it’s easier to remember the order the cards have been used in during the trip and to avoid erasing one by mistake. Photo gear It’s important to sort gear before leaving. This will improve weight and size of your backpack. Some airline companies are very strict about the size and weight of hand luggage. If the weight and size does not correspond to their guidelines, the photo bag will be put with the rest of the luggage. And then the arrival of the gear undamaged is not always guaranteed.

After finishing my sports studies and just before raiding my deep piggy bank to gather enough money to buy my first DSLR, I started working as a trainee at the only German-speaking Freeski magazine, “Skiing – The next level”. I thought working for the magazine would enable me to live out my passion for skiing in untouched mountain areas, while earning the money I needed to get by. The decision was both ideological and pragmatic, because after a decade I am still working at the same magazine – today as chief editoand freelance photographer. As writer and photographer, I get chances to capture unforgetable impressions of exotic countries during ski trips. Such examples include the legendary deep powder of Hokkaido and also taking in the impressive contrast of the white mountain ranges that climb up steeply from the deep blue Norwegian Sea in
Iceland. I could never have dreamed how changing from a skier in front of a lens to a photographer behind the lens would give me the opportunity to travel around half the globe. We do however have the most beautiful and accessible mountains in the world right in front of us, in form of the Alps. By ski lifts alone, it is possible to cross mountains from Slovenia to France, or from Germany to Italy. Despite this vast network and easy ways of getting around, there are still enough quiet resorts for us freeriders to rage ourselves out, with long and broad deep snow skis on snowy hillsides. Of course I also have my own powder secrets where I can host professional skiers peacefully. When I move with my camera, I need to stay agile just like the subjects in front of the lens, skiing far from the
grounded pistes. For this I need a backpack that is light and solid and one that I can fasten my skis onto without them shifting on my way up. If a crash were to happen, the backpack needs to save the sensitive equipment from being damaged. It is important that the waistbelt absorbs most of the weight, because the pelvis can more comfortably carry weight than the shoulders. A bottom heavy bag is also better with regards to weight distribution. Whoever has ever tried to ride with 20 kg on the shoulders into a 45° steep ditch knows what I am talking about. In the end the backpack should rest closely to the body, with more weight in the lower part. Being top heavy causes unwanted supine positions during the downhill skiing.

Freeskiing has embarked on some interesting directions. In the recent past, our sport has conquered a new playground for itself – the cities. We don’t require lifts, fresh snow or even mountains to have fun with skis. Urban skiing is comparable to skateboarding - skiers are always on the lookout for photogenic architecture of the metropolis as a stage for performing diverse tricks. This works best at night. Its at night when one can largely avoid the unwanted contact with pedestrians and onlookers, or being caught by street wardens that send you on your way. Furthermore, from the photographer’s point of view the artificially lit concrete and steel constructions take on a dramatic appearance. Urban skiing is expensive. Riders
must gather speed without a hill, which requires additional technical tools. Either one stretches a bungeelike rope as a catapult, or one uses a rope winch that pulls the skier with a gasoline engine. I usually appear at the scene with four backpacks. One carries my photo gear, while another carries my flashes that I positon in a strategic manner on the set, and that are triggered using a remote on my camera. I position my camera on a tripod for two reasons. Firstly, the riders are hard to spot in the dark through the viewfinder, which reduces the chances of freezing the action at the perfect moment. So instead I stand by my camera and use the remote trigger. Secondly, with a tripod it is possible to acheive some funky effects, by combining a long
exposure to capture the ambient light with the flash for freezing the skiing trick. As already mentioned regarding a backpack, strength and lightness are key factors in what I need, because the locations can often only be accessed by foot. This is why I want to save every singles gram. In addition to this, attaching the camera to sturdy and secure tripod ball head ensures it doesn’t drift out of position once locked off, when using a heavy telephoto lens. Of course there is much more to take into consideration when it comes to the topic photography in the mountains or in the cities. I am always open for questions and I am happy to pass on my experience to everybody that is interested in ski photography.

Tips • Ski photography happens at winter time, which means the outdoor temperature is mostly colder than 0° celsius. Cold fingers are slower and less agile, so you should definitely get gloves. Gloves that have removable claps at the forefinger and thumb are best, and should be available at most specialised retail stores.
• After a cold, snowy shooting day, lenses should be taken out of the backpack over night, avoiding a dramatic change in temperature, because the inside of the lens will fog over. There is nothing more annoying than lenses with a fogged interior caused by moisture and heat.
• Photographers are standing a lot and often need to reposition on the terrain to find the best shooting angles. Therefore, comfortable, soft-soled walking snow shoes are needed.

In contrast to the Netherlands, France cannot complain about the lack of mountains. The majority of winter sports tourism is concentrated in Chamonix, or the big ski resorts such as Val Thorens, Tignes and Les Deux Alpes. A true pearl is the less known La Grave, which has kept its historic charm far away from mass tourism. For an adventure in almost pristine mountains, you can’t go wrong in this mountain village.
Compared to Italy, Switzerland and Austria, Germany has the smallest piece of the Alps-cake. Nevertheless, you can find great terrain for Freeski Action. Obersdorf and Garmisch-Patenkircehn - where the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany is enthroned with its glaciers - are two of the best spots. More snow can commonly by found in the Allgäu. Due to its geographically favorable location, the Nebelhorn catches more of the white gold then its competitor in Upper Bavaria.
The Netherlands are almost left out in the cold concerning the European distribution of the mountains. This disadvantage is compensated for by the travel-mad flatlanders. A popular destination to spend the winter is in Tyrol. It is common knowledge that a view over the edge never harms, and a trip to Sweden could be a worthwhile alternative. The epicenter of the Swedish freeskiers is located in Ă…re about 150 kilometers east of Trondheim in Norway.

Sun, beaches and bullfighting. This is the Spain most people know. Contrary to this stereotype, the country offers some great skiing. It goes rather high up, for example, in the Sierra Nevada ski resort. The lift carries skiers up to nearly 3,300 meters, where one can rejoice over some great quality snow.
Brits essentially took part in the evolution of the winter sports tourism. St. Anton is a particularly popular spot for Brits, and the area is now one of the largest ski resorts in the Alps. This mecca for all freeriders is unrecognisable from its small mountain village days. However, it is still an attractive place to visit, with incredible possibilities in the terrain.
