ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS (ADUS)

An ADU is a small dwelling unit that may be established in addition to single-family or multifamily dwellings in residential, mixed-use, or agricultural zones.

AD’s are known by many names like granny units, in-law units, second units, and backyard cottages. An ADU may be detached, attached to the primary dwelling or other accessory structure, or located within a main dwelling and may involve new construction or conversion of an existing structure (such as a detached garage or other accessory structure, or a portion of a dwelling. They can range in size from a few hundred square feet to over 1.000 square feet, depending on local regulations and the specific needs of the homeowner. Also renting out an ADU as a vacation rental can be a great way to generate additional income, but it’s important to research and understand the regulations and requirements in your area, as well as the tax implications, before renting out your ADU.
