I’mPULSE, the Asia-Europe Music Camp, is a programme of the Asia-Europe Foundation’s (ASEF) Cultural Exchange sector. It is designed to provide a platform for young people to exchange their ideas on music. It is committed to process oriented action, encouraging fresh minds to pursue the development of their music concepts by learning from each other. I’mPULSE is an initiative to empower aspiring musicians from Asia and Europe in a continuous dialogue through music.
“We want to have a dialogue, not a monologue.” I’mPULSE, characterises multiple and diverse layers of exchange process.

Nurturing artistic creativity and facilitating encounters among young people, which are focal points for ASEF’s Cultural Exchange programmes for Young Artist Exchange, spontaneously reverberated through varying musical sound and language during the 7-day camp held at the National Arts Center in Los Banos, Laguna and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). The 18 young musicians coming from Belgium, China, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Republic of Korea, Lithuania, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Spain and Thailand provided a pulsating energy to this programme as they worked collectively in the creation of music. Involving four young composers with four original compositions and having fourteen different instrumentalists trained in the classical European and traditional Asian music necessitated openness and readiness for challenges throughout this music camp among the participants, artistic team and organisers.
PULSE at first sight
The musical expertise of Dr. Robert Casteels (Belgium) and Prof. Josefino ChinoToledo (Philippines), camp Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director, shaped the substantive and creative atmosphere in leading the young musicians from different cultures, schools of music, disciplines and practices. The knowledge shared by Dr. Rahayu Suppangah (Indonesia) on Gamelan instruments and Mrs. Aga Mayo Botocan (Philippines) on the kulintang ensemble allowed the Asian and European participants alike to gain direct cultural learning experience through traditional musical instruments. Experimentation and improvisation, which were highlighted in the commissioned musical arrangements by Bob Aves (Philippines), further enriched this process-oriented programme. CCP’s partnership with ASEF for I’mPULSE, manifests its dedication to multilateral artistic exchanges and continued development of young artists. This cooperation between ASEF and the CCP unfolds a brand new opportunity of cultural relationships evident in processing I’mPULSE.
