REV.4/13/2022
“SOROR WHO BEST PROMOTES SISTERHOOD” Martina Travis graduated from the University of Missouri School of Nursing and began her career at the University Hospital in the Internal Medicine Unit. After moving to California, she worked at Huntington Memorial Hospital and LACUSC Medical Center Newborn and Pathological Nursery. Transferring to the new Martin Luther King Jr Hospital in the OB/GYN Clinic, she soon became the Head Nurse of the unit. While working at MLK, she obtained her MPH from UCLA and thus began her Public Health (PH) career. She began as a PH Nurse, providing education and home visitation for epidemiology assessments, becoming a PH Nursing Supervisor and then district Nursing Director. The highlight of her PH career was when she became the Area Health Officer for two Service Planning Areas (SPA) with the PH responsibility for approximately 1.5 million residents. She was responsible for staff at two busy PH centers. She developed and implemented policies under the auspices of PH Administration and the various PH Programs. In keeping with areas of focus, the SPA received two grants, California Endowment’s “Healthy Eating, Active Communities” and Kaiser’s Healthier Living grants under her leadership. During her tenure, a new role for Public Health was developing which required a focus on emergency preparedness. She and her team collaborated and participated with LACO Emergency Preparedness Unit and the City of Los Angeles to provide a county-wide emergency preparedness exercise. Ms Travis acted as the Incident Commander in one of the first exercises which was conducted at the LA Sports Arena. She retired in 2008 but continued to act as a Nurse consultant for 2 additional years, writing policy, procedures and analyzing PH nursing data. Following complete retirement in 2010, she continues providing service to the community by participation in Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority Incorporated and Soul Food for Your Baby (SFYB). She is currently the Immediate Past President of her chapter of Chi Eta Phi and has been active i in community outreach activities. As a founding board member of SFYB, Ms. Travis promotes education and proliferation of breast feeding in the Los Angeles’ African American community. Ms Travis has been married to Raphael Blount for almost 45 years. Together they have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Prior to the pandemics, Martina and Raphael provided Healthier Living Classes to their parish on a regular basis. A role model for healthy living, Ms. Travis, an exercise enthusiast, has run 30 marathons and countless shorter runs.

MICHELLE CURTIS-USSERY
started her professional
career obtaining her CNA/HHA certificate upon graduation from high school. She knew she wanted to be a nurse and inquired about the RN program at a community college where she was discouraged from becoming a nurse. She went on to obtain her LVN certificate and license at another school to see if she really wanted to or could be a nurse. She then worked as an LVN for 7 years in various hospital units and ambulatory clinics. While working full-time as an LVN in Labor and Delivery, Michelle completed the RN program at Los Angeles Valley College with an Associate of Nursing degree in 2000. In 2005, she completed her BSN at California State University, Fullerton all the while supporting a family, and working full-time. She transferred from the Clinical Staff to an Educator for the hospital. After working and perfecting her career in education, she completed her Masters of Science in Nursing Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Michelle has also worked full-time as an educator in the hospital setting, while working as a Simulation Lab Instructor for a Bachelors of Science in Nursing program. Michelle enjoys teaching and decided to obtain her Doctorate as a Nurse Practitioner to work full-time in Academia. She currently works as a Clinical Educator in Ambulatory Care, as an Adjunct faculty at East Los Angeles College in the Medical Assistant program, and as an adjunct faculty in the Bachelors of Science in Nursing

Judy became a founding/charter member of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., Los Angeles Chapter in 2009 and later chartered and chaired the San Gabriel Valley Chapter in 2016. “Humanitarian Award Honoree”
Claris Health’s story began over 45 years ago, when a small group of women were inspired to start an organization that offered life-changing services to women, men, and families. Their mission from the start has been to equip and care for individuals and their families, before, during, and after pregnancy and sexual-health choices. Over 13,000 women and their families have benefited from their services in the past 10 years. Many services are free of charge at Claris, so money or insurance don't have to get in the way of the care that is needed. Basic health assessment to check blood pressure, heart rate, weight, etc. There’s also an opportunity to discuss and evaluate sexual health, address any areas of concern, help improve general health and well-being, and provide referrals if necessary. Group-based prenatal care is offered to qualifying patients at Claris’ Lynwood clinic facility. This model of prenatal care brings patients out of the exam room and into a group setting, which also helps build a community of support. Groups are typically formed with 4-10 women of different ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds. Groups begin in their first trimester of pregnancy and include the standard 10 prenatal visits. Caseworkers are available to process and create an inventory of need, assist with various resources, and provide a direct connection to community referrals for housing, employment, childcare, public benefits, and more. Mentorship and educational workshops are offered to help new parents thrive in their roles. Incentive programs encourage class participants to earn basic baby supplies, equipment, food and more. Court-mandated classes (using the Breakthrough Parenting curriculum) are available to any parent in need of this service. Therapy services are available to address relationships, anxiety, depression, pregnancy loss, parenting concerns, and other related topics. Claris Health has been serving the greater West Los Angeles area for more than 40 years. Positioned at the heart of westside between Santa Monica and Century City, they continue to provide compassionate care every step of the way. Their newest facility is in Lynwood close to Martin Luther King, Jr., Hospital. It’s an ideal location for several medically underserved South Los Angeles communities, spanning from Compton to South Gate and all the way to El Segundo. Mu Chi Chapter is honored to name Claris Health as it’s 2022 Humanitarian Award Recipient for their years of dedicated on-going distinguished and valuable services offered to humankind.
