Inauguration of Northwest Passage Hall of Fame Thursday September 28th, 6:00 – 9:00 pm At Vancouver Maritime Museum 1905 Ogden Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V6J 1A3

On Thursday September 28th, 2017, we are launching the Northwest Passage Hall of Fame at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. The Vancouver Maritime Museum is home of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) vessel, the St. Roch. The St. Roch was the first vessel in history to sail from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean via the Northwest Passage (NWP), the first vessel to sail the more northerly deep water Northwest Passage route and the first vessel to circumnavigate North America. It is a Canadian National Heritage Site. Part of the core mandate of the VMM is to curate, interpret and share the maritime stories of vessels and crews operating in Canada’s far north and in particular, the Northwest Passage. And so it is fitting that the Northwest Passage Hall of Fame will be located at the VMM. Join us as we celebrate this inauguration with our inductees. Present at the event will be Eugene “Dean” Hadley (RCMP), radio operator on board St. Roch 1940-42, descendants of the St. Roch crew as well as key members from the St Roch II voyage in 2000. Tickets are just $75 per person (ticket order form attached) Dress Code is semi-formal The evening includes: award ceremony, buffet dinner, live entertainment and music, and silent auction. All proceeds support our collections, and our many educational and public programs. About the Northwest Passage Hall of Fame: The Vancouver Maritime Museum is home of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) vessel, the St. Roch.

Part of the core mandate of the VMM is to curate, interpret and share the maritime stories of vessels and crews operating in Canada’s far north and in particular, the Northwest Passage (NWP). The Northwest Passage Hall of Fame will: a) Celebrate significant 3 categories - Individual, Vessel, and Expedition and their historical maritime experience in the Canadian Arctic on an annual basis; b) Become a public depository of libraries, archives etc related to NWP individuals, vessels and expeditions; and c) Position the VMM to be a centre of dialogue, discussion and education about the NWP for example dealing with Canadian Sovereignty, Right of Free Passage, Maritime Law, Geo-political concepts and international maritime trade via polar shipping routes, and environmental issues. Each year an award ceremony and fundraiser will take place. The Inaugural inductees for 2017 are: a) Category Individual – Eugene “Dean” Hadley (RCMP), radio operator on board St. Roch 1940-42; b) Category Vessel – RCMP St. Roch, first vessel to transit the NWP from west to east; c) Category Expedition – Hudson Bay Company’s ship Aklavik and the first commercial use of the NWP. In future years there will be a committee reviewing nominations for each category of inductees. Further information on this will be available on the NWP website shortly.
