About Us

Gabriel Ash is part of the Juliana Group. We are a renowned British brand situated in the Cotswolds who specialise in handcrafted cedar wood Greenhouses using traditional methods, designed with the utmost precision. Vansta has been agent for our greenhouses in Sweden for almost 20 years and is a trusted partner with grate knowledge of our product.

We are known for our exquisite designs, meticulous craftsmanship and the use of premium sustainable materials, all of which are carefully selected to ensure long-lasting performance and durability.

These materials not only provide a stunning visual appeal but also offer natural resistance to decay, corrosion, and weathering, ensuring your Greenhouse will remain a cherished sanctuary for generations.

Using traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints to give all of our Greenhouses strength and integrity, our dedicated team of skilled carpenters and joiners bring to your garden, the Greenhouse you’ve always dreamed of.

Our commitment to quality and attention to detail has earned us a loyal customer base. A Gabriel Ash Greenhouse is not only practical and functional but will also serve as an elegant garden focal point, enhancing the beauty of any outdoor space.

As a symbol of excellence in Greenhouse craftsmanship, we continue to inspire and delight gardeners worldwide, offering a collection of premium Greenhouses, from timeless Victorian structures to contemporary modern designs that embody the perfect blend of artistry and functionality.

If you love your garden, you’ll know it takes time and care to create something truly wonderful, which is why we take pride in everything we do, and the reason we are the only timber Greenhouse company endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Why Gabriel Ash?

Every one of our Greenhouses is precisely designed using CAD 3D design software, then each structure is meticulously hand built by craftsman and joiners. Each of our structures is made to order using the highest quality premium materials, accurate base plans are created for you, ensuring your investment has a sound foundation on which to sit.

Skilled Joiners

Our skilled joiners use the time-honoured technique of mortise and tenon jointing, which combined with the values of traditional craftmanship and joinery methods, ensure that every wooden component of the Greenhouse fits seamlessly and securely together, providing unmatched structural integrity. Each mortise, carefully carved into the wood, interlocks flawlessly with its corresponding tenon, creating a bond that withstands the test of time and nature’s elements. This artisanal approach not only enhances the Greenhouse’s elegance but also guarantees its longevity.

Ventilation

Ventilation is of the upmost importance for the Greenhouse. The main purpose of ventilation is to regulate the temperature and humidity to the optimal level, and to ensure movement of the air. If there is not adequate ventilation, Greenhouses and plants can become prone to problems.

Our Greenhouses are designed and supplied as standard with full length ridge automatic ventilation systems and a sufficient number of sash windows to provide ample ventilation. Additional ventilation accessories may be added to further improve ventilation if required.

Western Red Cedar

We only use the finest PEFC certified Western Red Cedar, which we source from British Columbia, Canada.

A beautiful and naturally durable wood, that ensures not only an attractive appearance but also a long-lasting Greenhouse that can withstand the test of time and varying weather conditions.

What makes Cedar unique, unlike other types of wood, is its ability to absorb moisture to attain equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere. What this means is as a result, the moisture can track to the inside of the structure particularly in the areas that are subject to the greatest weathering, the first stage is the darkening of the wood as water soluble extractives are drawn to the surface which will dry and often leaves a mark where the extractives have been released.

These extractives are the oils naturally present in the Cedar that make it resistant to rot.

As the wood weathers, it gradually changes colour turning a beautiful shade of grey, becoming impermeable in the process. This greying may not occur at the same rate on the internal faces of the structure.

In simple terms, this means when Cedar is first exposed to the elements, it absorbs and releases water. This process gradually reduces over time until reaching a static point of no reaction. At this point, the material is said to have reached equilibrium with the humidity and temperature of the surrounding environment.

Should you wish to minimise the initial stage of darkening and extractive staining, a Cedar specific UV protection oil can be applied which will slow down the colour changing process.

However, most people do prefer the natural weathered appearance and choose not to treat the structure. Given the long life of Cedar, which consistently outlasts other wood species, structures are expected to last between 15 and 30 years.

Depending on how well cared for, your Cedar Greenhouse may last for many years beyond this.

Powder Coated Aluminium Profiles

All the metal profiles used on our Greenhouses are aluminium due to its extreme versatility, strength, lifespan and the fact that aluminium is a 100% recyclable making it extremely enviromentally friendly.

Aluminium is a corrosion resistant metal that naturally generates a protective coating that is generated when aluminium comes into contact with an oxidising environment.

Additionally, we powder coat our profiles to further improve the overall corrosion resistance of the metal to give it a durable finish and decorative appearance. Powder coating is a three-step process that includes preparation, appliance and treatment, the coating leaves a really hard finish that is much tougher than normal paint making it both extremely durable and long lasting.

Aluminium Substructure

We use an aluminium substructure to improve the strength and durability of our handcrafted Greenhouses.

Engineered to perfection, this aluminium foundation ensures unparalleled stability and support for your Greenhouse, providing the utmost protection for your precious plants and cherished possessions. This ensures ease of installation and flexibility in design, allowing for larger expanses of glass and wider openings, maximising natural light and ventilation for your plants’ optimal growth.

Aluminium Substructure

Stainless Steel Fixings

The structural fixings on your new Greenhouse are all made from stainless steel which is particularly resistant to corrosion.

Brass Fixtures & Fittings

We use only solid brass fittings on our Greenhouses. The fixtures are given a thin coating of lacquer to stop them from tarnishing.

The brass screws are unlacquered but if these dull down over time, you can always polish them to restore their lovely shine.

Galvanised Steel Fixtures

The fixtures we use on our Combis and Grow & Stores are made from galvanised steel which has a protective zinc coating to prevent rusting.

Toughened Safety Glass

Embracing the highest standards of safety and durability, all our luxury handcrafted Gabriel Ash Greenhouses feature toughened glass which has been certified to EN-12150 standards. Engineered through a meticulous process of heating and rapid cooling, toughened glass becomes up to five times stronger than regular glass, ensuring unparalleled resilience against impact and weather conditions.

Autovents

All Gabriel Ash Greenhouses come with Autovents as standard. The Autovents metal piston contains a mineral wax which under increasing temperatures pushes the piston rod up opening the vent. The vent is set to start opening between 12°C and 17°C. They function in the warmer months of the year when the temperatures are high both inside and outside the Greenhouse. This aids natural convection which occurs when cool air heats up and starts to rise due to the air becoming less dense as it is heated, this process will repeat pulling cooler denser air in to fill the space, air will be continually cycled providing the plants with fresh cool air. Gabriel Ash Greenhouses provide ventilation as standard but additional ventilation accessories may be added to further improve ventilation if required.

Allows your Greenhouse to be optimally vented all year

OurCollections

Both our Classic and RHS collections are handcrafted in our Cotswold workshop to the same high standards using the same premium materials. However on closer inspection they are very different, with the RHS structures using around 50% more timber and materials compared with an equal sized structure from the Classic collection.

The Classic collection takes its cues from a mix of traditional wooden Greenhouse design combined with modern minimalism. The RHS collection on the other hand is reminiscent of ornate Victorian architecture, using a more decorative aesthetic, being taller, with higher eaves, a steeper roof pitch and using turned finials on the gable ends.

The Classic collection, apart from the Classic Planthouses and Grow & Stores, all have smooth running sliding doors, whereas the RHS collection uses hinged doors hung with heavy duty solid brass or polished stainless steel butt hinges.

Another difference between the two collections is the size of the glass panels. Whereas the Classic collection uses panels which are approximately 2 foot wide, the panels used in the RHS collection are much narrower at only 1 foot 2 inches.

As standard the Classic collection is glass to ground, although the glass panes can be replaced with Cedar panels if required, whereas the Classic Planthouses and the RHS collection have Cedar Base Boards as standard with the option of being erected onto a Dwarf Wall instead.

The Classic Collection

Whatever the size of your garden there’s a Gabriel Ash Classic Greenhouse that will suit your needs. Available in a variety of options including traditional Greenhouses, Lean-To’s, Grow & Stores, Planthouses and the Vision. The Lean-To’s are designed to be built up against an existing wall within the garden. The popular Grow & Stores combine both a Greenhouse and Shed together whereas the Planthouses and Vision models have higher eaves compared to traditional Greenhouses.

The Classic collection has long been a popular choice for both amateur and professional gardeners alike.

Made using only the finest Western Red Cedar and supplemented with aluminium in all the key areas, our Classic structures are designed to be just that – classic.

RHS 'Portico' with Cedar Base Boards

The RHS Collection

Our RHS models, over 100 years on from the Victorian Era that inspired so many beautiful garden buildings, feature narrow glass panes and use time honoured joinery techniques to create grand structures with elegant proportions, typical of Victorian Glasshouses. This is cleverly combined with modern construction methods to give the perfect combination of strength, durability and classic beauty, enhancing your garden and providing a perfect architectural focal point.

The popular RHS Portico features a central porch entrance to the Greenhouse. The RHS Planthouses feature a higher eaves height compared with traditional Greenhouses. The RHS Combi structures combine both a Greenhouse and shed. Whereas our RHS Glasshouses feature a bespoke ventilation system and unique design providing a structure with multiple uses.

Many of our RHS Greenhouses have the option to replace the Western Red Cedar Base Boards with a Dwarf Wall constructed from brick or stone to marry in with your garden environment or surrounding buildings.

Coldframes

Amateur or professional, a Gabriel Ash Coldframe is a vital addition to your garden. Manufactured using the same high precision mortise and tenon joints as our Greenhouses, each Coldframe is constructed with toughened safety glass, discreet aluminium plinths and capping. Gabriel Ash Coldframes come with powder coated plinths to protect against damp, and have integral stays allowing the Coldframes to be propped open at varying heights to ensure sufficient air circulation. Alternatively for those with little outside space, as a substitute for a Greenhouse, our Upright Coldframes are ideal for balconies or small gardens and as standard, come with cedar panelled backs.

All of our Coldframes are perfect for overwintering small, delicate plants when the temperatures start to fall. Like our other structures, our Coldframes also come with a 12 year manufacturing guarantee and are delivered, neatly packaged, for easy self assembly.

Accessories

Deluxe Folding Cedar Shelving

Gardening in a Greenhouse can be much more productive with Greenhouse Shelving. The shelf can be positioned high up on the Greenhouse sides where the air is warmer making Shelving a popular Greenhouse accessory for those who grow from seed. The Shelving, like our Greenhouses, is made from solid Western Red Cedar and can be positioned on either side of the Greenhouse, or both if you'd prefer more storage as well as having the option to be easily folded away when not required.

Deluxe Folding Cedar Staging

Our Folding Staging is positioned at kitchen counter height creating a wide easily accessible area for your plants to grow. It increases plants access to sunlight, giving you the ability to monitor progress and attend their needs. The Staging, like our Greenhouses, is made from solid Western Red Cedar and can be positioned on either side of the Greenhouse, or both sides if you'd prefer. Like the Shelving, the Staging can be easily folded away when not required, maximising the internal area.

Roller Blinds

Easy to operate, our Greenhouse Roller Blinds are made from a grey hard wearing synthetic material that is well suited to a Greenhouse environment. Designed specifically for our Greenhouses, the Roller Blind is mounted and secured to the generous Cedar framework of our structures and offer 60 percent shade, helping to prevent the Greenhouse, plants and user from getting too hot in the warmer Summer months. These Blinds are fitted internally and operate on a Spring loaded roller allowing greater control of the temperature in your Greenhouse.

Cedar Panels

Our beautiful Cedar cladding panels allow you to change the look and feel of our Greenhouses adding yet more distinct reddish-brown hues and intricate grain patterns of Western Red Cedar, by simply replacing a rectangular pane of glass. The possibilities are extensive you may choose to encompass the whole bottom half of the Greenhouse to mimic a Dwarf Wall effect or the whole of one side to help shade your plants from prolonged direct sunlight or for privacy if desired. You can even pair with grey aluminium sheeting for the roof to create an enclosed shed section when using our configuration services.

Cedar Water Butt

The Water Butt which effortlessly complements the Greenhouse's beauty while providing a sustainable and eco-friendly solution for watering your beloved plants. Harvesting rainwater from the Greenhouse's roof, it conserves precious resources and reduces your ecological footprint.

Louvre Vent

Our Louvre Vents have been designed to easily replace any rectangular glass pane of our Classic or RHS Greenhouses.

Our customers usually choose to place their louvre at the plain end of the Greenhouse opposite the door, creating a good through draft. The advantage of our system of replacing a glass pane allows the Louvre Vent to be easily repositioned with minimal effort.

Gardening safety is a priority at Gabriel Ash, so the Louvre Vent has four blades of toughened safety glass, the edges of which are polished for safe handling.

Cedar Potting Tray

Measuring 560mm wide by 680mm in length, the Cedar Potting Tray sits snugly on most staging and adds a practical finishing touch to your new Gabriel Ash.

Positioning Your Greenhouse

The best location to site a Greenhouse depends on several factors that can vary based on your specific climate, the type of Greenhouse and the types of plants you plan to grow. Keep in mind that each location has unique considerations, so it’s essential to assess your property and consider the specific needs of the plants you plan to grow. Here are some general guidelines to consider when choosing the location for your Greenhouse.

Orientation

For the typical English climate, we recommend lining up the ridge line of the Greenhouse in an east to west orientation to maximise light transmission all year round, even during the winter. This will allow it to heat up as early as possible after cold nights.

Sunlight

Select a location that receives maximum sunlight exposure throughout the day. South-facing positions tend to receive the most sunlight in the northern hemisphere, while north-facing positions are ideal in the southern hemisphere. Avoid areas with excessive shade from trees, buildings or other structures.

Wind Exposure

Place the Greenhouse in a location that offers some protection from abnormally strong winds especially during extreme weather conditions. Consider natural windbreaks like trees, shrubs or buildings to shield the Greenhouse from strong gusts.

Drainage

Ensure the site has good natural drainage to prevent water accumulation around the Greenhouse. Avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding or areas where water might pool.

Accessibility

Consider easy access to the Greenhouse from your home or garden, especially if you’ll be spending a lot of time caring for your plants or tending to seedlings.

Proximity to Objects and Boundaries

We advise that the Greenhouse is not positioned too close to a boundary and that a minimum space of 2ft is maintained for installation purposes and to allow the timber to breathe.

Local Regulations

If you are not sure regarding planning or regulations, be sure to check with your local council for local building codes and regulations that might affect Greenhouse placement, size or setback requirements.

Proximity to Water and Electricity

Choose a location that is close to a water source for easy irrigation and a power supply for heaters, fans and other electrical equipment.

Damage Prevention

You should avoid siting your Greenhouse under any object like trees etc... as falling debris can cause damage if large enough and smaller debris will cause excess algae to build up.

Microclimates

Consider any microclimates on your property that might influence temperature variations or frost pockets. Look for areas that are naturally warmer during colder months or cooler during hot summers.

Foundation

The base onto which the structure sits and is fixed must be flat and secure. We recommend a raised brick plinth to raise the structure above ground level. A comprehensive base plan is provided with every structure.

Considerations When Purchasing

The age-old argument of whether an aluminium or timber type of structure is better, really comes down to personal preference. Here’s a list of considerations to help you decide.

Tradition

Cedar is the traditional material used in Britain for a Greenhouse rather than metal or plastic.

Aesthetics

Cedar frames tend to blend with the natural surroundings of your garden especially as they age.

Structural Integrity

A Greenhouse frame made from Cedar is usually much thicker and heavier than a metal one. The structure has been joined in a traditional way and is therefore naturally strong and able to withstand much harsher weather conditions.

Thermal Insulation

Cedar Greenhouse frames provide great natural insulation. This keeps the Greenhouse warmer during the Winter and cooler during the Summer, making it easier to create a more stable growing environment for your plants.

Maintenance

Although no yearly preservative, painting or staining is required to protect from rot. Debris buildup needs to be removed to allow the timber to dry out.

Personal Touch

Cedar Greenhouse frames can be easily modified to suit your needs.

Made To Order

It takes time and care to craft a Cedar Greenhouse exactly as you want it. Whereas aluminum Greenhouses are mass manufactured and ready to be delivered off the shelf.

Cost

Cedar Greenhouses are generally more expensive than aluminium Greenhouses, due to the use of premium materials and the skilled craftsmen needed to construct them.

Caring For Your Greenhouse

Your Greenhouse is designed, manufactured and installed to the highest possible standards and is virtually maintenance free. Many customers are still happy with their purchase after 30+ years, which is a testament that if the Greenhouse is well cared for, you will enjoy your purchase for many years to come. However, to increase its longevity a small amount of care and attention is necessary. Please take a few moments to read this guide to ensure you receive many years of trouble-free enjoyment.

Western Red Cedar Maintenance

As with any structure made from timber, good airflow and allowing the timber to dry out periodically is key, so routinely clearing any debris that has built up on the outside of the Greenhouse must be carried out in order to allow water to drain away fully and the wooden profiles to dry out.

Typically, with all timber buildings in general, some minor adjustment may be required to windows and doors to ensure their correct function due to settling over time.

General cleaning should be carried out regularly. We recommend twice a year, beginning and the end of the growing season, using warm water with a mild detergent (pH neutral solution) with a non-abrasive cloth to remove any dirt, soil and debris, whilst frequently changing the water.

Under no circumstances should aggressive, alkaline or acidic cleaners be used. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water, avoid using a hosepipe and completely saturating the timber.

Powder Coated Aluminium Profiles Maintenance

The powder coated aluminium profiles should require very little maintenance, using warm water with a mild detergent (pH neutral solution) with a non-abrasive cloth to remove any dirt, soil and debris, whilst frequently changing the water. Under no circumstances should aggressive, alkaline or acidic cleaners be used. Do not use steel wool or scouring pads on powder coated surfaces. As with all gutters, the gutter profiles will need clearing of any leaves or other debris periodically to prevent blockages.

Toughened Safety Glass Maintenance

The toughened glass requires no maintenance apart from cleaning when the glass is looking grimy to improve the appearance, using warm water with a mild detergent (pH neutral solution) with a nonabrasive cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or sand. Once you have finished cleaning the glass, use a soft microfibre cloth to buff the glass until it is dry to prevent smearing. A regular non-abrasive cloth will also work.

Stainless Steel Fixings Maintenance

Stainless steel is easy to maintain as it is resistant to scratches and corrosion, and it is easy to clean by simply wiping using a non-abrasive cloth with warm water and mild detergent (pH neutral solution) to remove any grime that has built up over time restoring it to its original appearance.

Brass Maintenance

Unlacquered Brass – Screws & Washers

The natural bright and polished finish will deteriorate once the product is exposed to the elements and regular cleaning with a soft cloth and quality brass polish is required if you wish to keep the natural appearance as it will naturally dull over time. The intervals between cleanings will vary according to location and usage but a wipe with olive oil on a cloth after polishing will help to increase the length of time before the next cleaning.

Lacquered Brass – Hardware

Regularly dust and periodically using warm water with a mild detergent (pH neutral solution) with a nonabrasive cloth to remove any dirt, dust, or sand. Lacquers are not a permanent finish and will wear off at a rate equivalent to usage and location, there can be no guarantee of its permanency or longevity.

Once the lacquer has broken down if you wish to restore, remove the hardware from the Greenhouse, use acetone thinners to remove any remaining lacquer, it can then be polished and re-lacquered.

Altentively, leave the lacquer to naturally break down and maintain as explained in 'Unlacquered BrassScrews & Washers' above.

Autovent Maintenance

The Autovent has two strong stainless-steel springs which assist in closing the vent when the wax cools. The springs also act as a safety mechanism. Should the vent be subject to a strong gust of wind on a day when the vent is open then the piston will disengage, causing the vent to shut. Once the winds have passed it is necessary to reset the Autovent manually.

This can be done by lifting the flap by hand (working against the force of the springs) and realigning the piston rod with the hole in the bracket that is attached to the aluminium flap.

Alternatively, the nut that is attached to the bracket that secures the piston to the wood can be loosened allowing the piston to drop down. Once the piston is aligned with the hole in the upper bracket it can be repositioned as before and the nut tightened.

The Autovent cylinders are regarded as a consumable part and are covered by warranty to be effective for at least two years after which time they can be easily replaced. These can be purchased directly over the phone from Gabriel Ash or online by visiting www.gabrielash.com.

Please note that the nut on the bottom of the piston should not be tampered with as it will result in the release of the mineral wax and affect the performance of the Autovent.
