THE EDITOR'S NOTE June really is the month for sculpture and local artists. The annual Surrey Artists’ Open Studios is on from the 1st-16th June and features no less than 297 artists and 180 studios in and around the county. Plenty to see, purchase and do, including workshops for all those wannabe artists out there. It really is a fabulous idea and a great way to get inspiration and to support our local craftsmen and women. One I have been to a number of times is Art & Soul at The Artful Gallery near Haslemere. Run by the sculptor David Paynter, it is in the fabulous grounds of his also fabulous Huf house and features over 20 very varied artists. A couple of years ago, I succumbed to a great sculpture featuring the windswept head of a dog wearing driving goggles, which sits proudly in my sitting room, keeping a eye on me and Humphrey. I absolutely love it! For more information and directions, please visit www.theartfulgallery.co.uk. You should also have time to visit the Surrey Hills Sculpture Garden in the lovely grounds of Birtley House near Bramley. Organised by Surrey Hills Enterprises, this features some lovely items and is on until Sunday 2nd June. Over past years, I have bought a couple of inexpensive pieces for my garden and these really do enhance the planting and offer some visual delight when the garden looks at its most forlorn over the winter months.

To the

Our grumpy old git (GOG) has his say...
I
don’t know about you, but I get agitated just thinking about all of the times I’ve had to experience a full-on assault on my senses by people who seem totally oblivious, not just to the real world around them, but also to the invasion of the personal space of others - both physical and sensory. Whilst waiting for a train just the other day I had to listen to a very long and very loud conversation being held by a guy who was holding his mobile phone at arm’s length (hence the shouting I assume) and up at eye level, presumably so he could out-stare whoever the poor soul was on the other end. Thankfully it wasn’t possible to hear both sides of the diatribe as he had an earpiece attached. I’m sorry, but that is not just totally out of order, it is downright self-centred with an indifference that quite simply says ‘I’m way too important to care’. I have a good feeling that you’re going to be onside on this, unless you just happen to be one of those half-witted don’t-cares – in which case put down that mobile right now and get back into the real world.
And what of those zombie-like souls that have become totally enveloped by the online world they have chosen to live in? I used to try and dodge the approaching automatons transfixed by their mobiles, who also seem to have lost the skill of employing the lateral vision they were presumably born with. But I now steadfastly hold my path as I walk towards them along the pavement. The resultant close-calls and the one full-on collision (not my fault) are all-revealing - especially as inevitably I get all of the expletives. Have they learned a lesson? I doubt it. You see them everywhere. And even when they’re supposedly socialising together in a public place they’ll be tapping away in unison at the screens of their phones – and probably responding to posts and likes from the very people they are physically sharing the space with. I’ve even witnessed this in restaurants with all the diners sharing a table on their phones, and at music gigs too! Err, why? I’m a very sociable chap and when I’m out and about I’ll often wish fellow pedestrians an enthusiastic good day greeting when passing, and the majority acknowledge the greeting just as enthusiastically. But yes, you’ve guessed it, I’m lucky if I get a grunt from most of our mobile obsessives. Try it sometime – it’s great to be proactively part of the real world. It’s a rewarding experience. Do you agree with GOG? What irritates you these days? Please let us know and we will publish the best comments and responses online. Please let us know by emailing us at gog@vantagepublishing.co.uk.

Electric cars are here!
Andy Goundry takes a look at how the world of electric cars is changing
U
p to now, electric cars have been of limited interest to most family motorists, being either too small a range to be useful, or just too expensive. However, recent months have seen the launch of several more reasonably-priced cars capable of over 200 miles on one charge. For example, many models of the Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia e-Niro have over a 200mile range, with prices of under £30,000 inclusive of the £3,500 grant currently offered by the Government. It’s an indication of just how eagerly these more family-friendly models have been received that there is already a waiting list of up to a year for many. This will change quickly, for almost every car manufacturer, including Peugeot, Volkswagen, Seat and Kia will be launching new electric models over the next few months. And, yes, they may still be a bit more expensive than petrol-powered transport but remember that operating costs are a fraction of that of a conventional car. An average 40mpg family car costs around 14p per mile in petrol against about 4p a mile to ‘fill up’ an electric vehicle at home. Servicing costs too should be much cheaper, for electric cars have far fewer moving parts. Savings like these soon add up and go a long way to offsetting that slightly higher initial price. The need to replace expensive batteries is a concern raised by some; however, experience has shown that while the range of electric car batteries does indeed reduce over time, the reduction is both small and gradual, so the battery could easily outlast the car. The lack of charging stations is another overexaggerated fear. The media delight in printing dramatic headlines on this, but what they don’t tell you is that the number of charging points is snowballing, with an increase of 25% in the last 12 months alone. Many of these are ‘fast chargers’, able to give your electric car a typical range boost of over 100 miles in 30 minutes or less.
10

Grants to help with the cost of home chargers are available too; indeed some electricity suppliers even offer discounted off-peak electricity for charging. Finally, what are electric cars like to drive? Most folk who try them never want to go back to a regular car, as they are so smooth and responsive, particularly in traffic. In short, electric cars are now a real option. Try one and be prepared to be impressed!

The School of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Surrey
Phil Kemp visits this outstanding new education centre for aspiring young vets.
T
he school took in its first undergraduates five years ago which means that their very first graduation ceremony will be held in July – a very exciting milestone for the University. As only the second British vet school to open since 1965, which saw The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attend their grand opening, they have taken the opportunity to develop state-of-the-art clinical skills facilities. This investment is ensuring that the school is also well-placed to explore and implement ground-breaking new veterinary science research. I was invited by the University to meet with the Head of School, Professor Chris Proudman (left), and as I walked towards the striking new building just up the road from the University’s Surrey Sports Park in Guildford I couldn’t help being transfixed by the three-storey high glass fascia towering over the entrance hall, with its bright reflection in an adjacent ornamental pond. “Our Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Science has proven to be very popular and we have attracted some of the highest achieving students here,” said Chris. “The students are doing really well and the feedback we are getting from our partner organisations when the students are with them is fantastic, showing how practical they are by putting what they have learned into action.” The school is a pioneer in its approach to workplacebased clinical education, where students are actively
engaged in typical working environments they will end up in when they graduate. This sees the students undertaking clinical training placements throughout their last year within a network of veterinary practices. “We have been commended for the fantastic engagement that our students get from our partner practices,” Chris enthused. “Vets in these practices really want to be part of educating the next generation of vets. Part of it is genuinely altruistic – they received a good education and they want to make sure that the next generation does.” “The majority of our students will end up in private practice and most will go and work with small animals where 75% of the jobs are and a much

A Will ensures that your estate will be used according to your wishes. The remarkable legacy left behind by Sir Ken Dodd Sir Ken Dodd OBE passed away on the 11th of March 2018. He died two days after the marriage to his partner of 40 years. Inheritance Tax (IHT) is charged on any estate value above £ 325,000. However, if everything is left to a spouse or registered civil partner (or for their benefit through a life interest trust) there is normally no Inheritance Tax to pay. Sir Ken Dodd’s legacy is estimated to be worth £7.2 million. Assuming that his wife benefits either directly or through a life interest trust there will be no inheritance tax to pay. If the couple had not married the estate could have paid close to £2.75 million in Inheritance Tax bills. If you do not leave a Will: • A long term partner has no automatic inheritance rights. • Family disputes are likely. • High levels of tax are likely. If you have children of a previous marriage: - A Will can provide for otherwise competing claims and prevent a lot of bitterness. - It is possible to ‘channel’ assets through a trust for the benefit of the surviving spouse. If your Will is more than two years old: You need to check that it will enable your family to claim the new Inheritance Tax allowance ‘The Residence Nil Rate Band.’
Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) Are not only for the elderly. We are all at risk from illness or accident particularly those who travel or do risky sports. An LPA for financial matters permits your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs. An LPA for health matters permits your attorneys to speak for you if you are too ill to make decisions or speak for yourself. Thus matters such as medical treatment and even ‘Care’ are decided by those who are close to you. If we are unable to act for ourselves and there is no LPA even a joint bank account is frozen and all our financial matters grind to a halt. A policy of ‘wait and see’ can be disastrous. You can only sign when you have full capacity. ✓ We quote our fixed fees up front ✓ We meet with you in informal surroundings and spend a lot of time making sure we get everything right and you are happy ✓ We believe in plain English ✓ We advise on the most tax effective solutions ✓ Our clients tell us that the experience has been a pleasant one and they are extremely glad that they have the necessary documents in place. ✓ We will check your Will for you.

smaller percentage will go into farm animal or equine work,” explained Chris. “However, after working in that environment for a few years some will gravitate into other areas. So for example the pharmaceutical industry, or working for the government perhaps at APHA (The Animal and Plant Health Agency). Working in the food sector they help secure the safety of our food. Some also want to become conservation vets or work in zoos, but the most unusual career option I’ve heard is from one of our final year students who wants to get involved in government policy making which of course is a really important and influential area.” The vet school has been attracting a lot of attention because of the high-profile research it has been conducting in various sectors, and I was keen to find out more. “I could give a lot of examples from across a broad range,” said Chris, his smile hinting at the fact that he was as proud of this as his surname may already be suggesting. “Let’s start with an international one. Intestinal parasites in animals can also infect humans – the so-called zoonotic diseases which transfer between species. One of my colleagues is working on a project in the Philippines where these intestinal parasites are a real problem in some of the poorer communities. So, using some of the advanced molecular techniques in her laboratory, and working with fieldworkers in the Philippines, they are able to work out how these parasites are moving between animal populations and human populations. This is enabling them to work out better control strategies that benefit both the animals and humans. “More locally another of my colleagues, Professor Clare Rusbridge, works with one of our partner practices Fitzpatrick Referrals in Godalming as a consultant veterinary neurologist. She has conducted work with brachycephalic animals – these are dogs that have the very pushed-in faces, so for example Cavalier King Charles and the French bulldog breeds. They have particular problems

at the back of their skull where it meets the cervical spine causing compression of the spinal cord at that point – which of course is very, very painful. Clare is researching to understand the reasons for this and then to work closely with the breed societies to try to be able to recognise animals that are most at risk.”

SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
Above and right: The school of veterinary medicine's pathology centre
The school also has a team of veterinary pathologists, one of whom specialises in veterinary forensic pathology and who works closely with the RSPCA and the police when they need a forensic investigation of dead animals. One very high-profile case they worked on was the investigation in 2015 into reports of mutilated cats in Croydon and the surrounding area. Following multiple post-mortem investigations, the Metropolitan Police determined that there was no evidence of human involvement. Surrey University is an internationally-acclaimed centre of education and research, and is not only a major local employer but also brings a lot of other benefits to the local community. “Most of our staff live in the local area and they work with the University in local schools to engage with students who may be interested in careers in veterinary medicine,” explained Chris. “We also hold a summer school here where they can see what its like to study veterinary medicine by undertaking activities that hopefully will spur their enthusiasm and their curiosity for pursuing that particular degree. “Our students in their first and second years go to Merrist Wood College over in Worplesdon for some of their animal handling in animal management classes and where they can make use of their excellent facilities and staff. And of course with our students working in local veterinary practices in their final year this has a positive impact locally for many local residents.” I was sitting with Chris in the very airy and naturally lit atrium of the main academic building with its lecture theatres, teaching rooms and collaboration spaces. At the rear of the building is the school’s Clinical Skills Centre with what the school brags as an ‘innovative flying saucer design’. Here they have teaching rooms alongside a ring of stables and livestock pens. “There is no doubt that the School of Veterinary Medicine is a great fit for this university and for Surrey

overall. There is so much animal-related activity here with so many activities that we bring together into this space – and our growth has been really successful,” explained Chris. “One of our very early entrants to the school, who had worked as a parliamentary intern before they joined the veterinary course, made an interesting comment. He said in Westminster we would call this a democratic space because everybody gets an opportunity to have their opinion heard. Which I’m proud to say that it is.” Phil Kemp is a Godalming-based writer and photographer. www.weyriver.co.uk

The Petworth Festival
T
TUESDAY 16TH JULY TO SATURDAY 3RD AUGUST
o many people the word ‘festival’ paints a particular picture: a vast, sprawling open air site - potentially a muddy one - over-priced cider, countless ‘street’ food outlets, and concerts viewed hundreds of meters from the stage, artists more easily being seen on screen than for real. But there is another type of festival… Festivals like the Petworth Festival operate in a completely different way, and in many cases they have been around much longer, albeit perhaps punching with a lighter weight in the media because of their more modest scale. Petworth Festival has indeed been around for 40 years, but it has by no means stayed in the past. Indeed the founders of the event way back in the 1970s would attest to the extent to which the event has prospered, matured and grown. No longer does the Petworth audience have to cram its cultural needs into one weekend, and no longer do the festival’s events singularly happen in the town’s lovely St Mary’s Church. That’s not to say the founding fathers wouldn’t approve of what they see but they would be amazed by the extent to which the Petworth Festival is now far more than simply a festival for and in Petworth.
community could enjoy, then we are really missing a trick. That’s not to say we try to be a jack of all trades and master of none, but within the context of laying on a range of superb music and entertainment, we really try to ensure there aren’t too many gaps.” Collins points to the scope of the music on offer between the middle of July and beginning of August. “The festival has always doffed its cap to the finest classical artists, and by inviting the likes of ‘the hottest classical guitarist in the world’, MILOŠ, top international opera singers such as the mighty Sir John Tomlinson, and world class pianists such as Imogen Cooper and Barry Douglas, that tradition is proudly upheld; but to me, the growth of the event in recent years can be put down to the fact that we have opened our doors to top performers from right across the board.” This mission is borne out by a trio of headline shows that take place over the middle weekend of this year’s festival (Thursday 25th to Saturday 27 July) in one of Petworth’s little known jewels, Petworth House’s Stable Yard. Here over three nights audiences will be treated to a blues night with the great Georgie Fame, a very much saucy-in-prospect night of comedy with Julian Clary, and the annual sell out Jazz at The Stables which this year features three bands headlined by Ray Gelato and the Giants.
Petworth Festival’s aim is quite simple according to the event’s main man, Stewart Collins, who this year celebrates a personal landmark, his tenth year at the helm. “If we don’t provide something during the course of a festival that absolutely every member of the

Rock and pop is something of a newcomer to this year’s event in the shape of iconic keyboard player, Rick Wakeman. It has to be said that this is likely to be as much of a comedy as a music event, so adept is Wakeman as a teller of tales, but as Collins says, “there is greatness in any genre you look at, and without any doubt, Rick Wakeman is a great!”. Family and community events are absolutely at the heart of each annual Petworth programme, a new collaboration with the National Trust and Petworth House paying dividends with a free day in the Pleasure Grounds which features an afternoon performance of Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows. “And don’t forget the Come and Sing event!”, stresses Collins. “We’ve had a hoot in the last couple of years with the incomparable Ben Parry leading us through singalong events featuring the music of ABBA and The Sound of Music, and this year it’s ‘The Music of Disney’. Sporting whacky costumes has become something of the norm for some of our regulars, so do get out your Mickey Mouse, Toy Story or Jungle Book costumes if you have them; you won’t be made to feel embarrassed. No really!”. The festival runs over nearly three weeks with evening, lunchtime and daytime events on most days, but when asked to pick a couple of genuine highlights of his own, Stewart concedes that “I personally will not be missing a minute of two particular events: firstly our very own ‘Game of Thrones-alike’ concert: a brilliantly entertaining setting of the ancient story of dragons and derring-do, Beowulf, which stars Harry Potter’s Oliver Phelps as the narrator, brilliant professional forces plus a class of children from Petworth Primary School. And then ‘The Dad’s Army Radio Show’: two phenomenal actors who voice and act every character in two classic episodes from the evergreen BBC sitcom. Absolutely fabulous!”. Sarah Chatterton Textile Artist
Phil Kemp visits the Farnham studio of an eco textile artist
I
had encountered some of Sarah’s textile art before visiting her studio near Farnham, and had immediately been drawn in not just by her very artistic eye-catching embroidered creations but also by her personal engagement with nature and commitment to eco-conscious sustainability. “A few years ago it dawned on me that I should create art by upcycling,” Sarah explained. “So instead of creating new things just for decoration, I wanted to make something that has a greater and good sense to it. I would take something I’d bought from a charity shop and give it a new lease of life. Adorn the fabric with a vegetable, for example, or make something by repairing a hole and cover that up with decorative stitching.” I glanced up at the shelf behind Sarah where she was sitting at her sewing machine by the window. On display were a variety of different and vibrant designs sewn into fabric, all with a common nature theme. “I originally started sewing birds as I was drawn to nature. I’ve always been an outdoorsy sort of person so that was my main inspiration. Anything organic-looking, and natural,” said Sarah. “Then about two years ago I joined my local community farm and felt so inspired by the richness of the colours of vegetables there, and everything about the farm life with the amazing creations we grew from the ground.

So I started sewing vegetables and edible plants like nasturtiums. And now I’m doing all sorts of beautiful herbs too.” Being able to look at and hold Sarah’s fabric designs gave me the chance to see just how detailed and realistic they are. But what really struck me was the amazing vibrancy and range of the colours, especially given that all have been created by skilfully sewing thread into fabric. “I do a thing called double threading,” explained Sarah, touching the two yarn spools on top of her sewing machine. “I put on two tones of one colour, so the two threads go through the machine exactly the same way as one thread would. It means that you can pick out and change one colour and switch it for the next. So it’s the equivalent of what a painter would call shading - you are subtly changing the colour. But with thread it is a lot harder to do that so I do it by using the two threads together.” So how does Sarah transfer the design

that she has created in her mind onto the fabric just using thread? Although I’m no artist I’ve seen and appreciate how painters work up their pictures as they start layering and mixing the paint they’re applying, to build up the artwork until it looks exactly the way they intended. “I used to sew straight onto the fabric,” said Sarah. “But now I draw a pencil outline and then sew over the top of it. And I’ve got this thing for metallic thread as it lifts the colours so well.” Sarah pointed up at an incredibly vibrantlycoloured radish on the shelf behind her. “Awkwardly that
22
V.

has a bit of glitter on the thread, which is not brilliant environmentally, but it was bought second-hand so as it’s already existing then why not use it?” The large tray of different coloured yarns on the workbench next to her are mostly second-hand, either donated from people she knows or meets, or are bought from charity shops. Sarah is a regular visitor to the Phyllis Tuckwell charity shop in Farnham where they have a haberdashery section. And she also buys yarn from an old-fashioned haberdashery shop in Petersfield. She rarely buys online as she likes to support independent shops in the area. I was now being distracted by a framed kestrel on display, which so cleverly captured the bird’s movement in a full hover as it observed some hidden prey below. You’d almost believe it was real. “Ah yes, my grandad’s a professional birdwatcher and whenever we used to stay with him in Cornwall we would go and look for rare birds. He was so passionate about birds and I just think they are absolutely beautiful creatures.” Sarah used to teach in the Surrey Adult Learning Centre in Guildford and enjoyed seeing how people in her sewing classes became totally absorbed in what they were creating. In fact, it was at the centre that another teacher had recommended to Sarah that she should join the community farm which has proven to be a huge motivator for her creativity. And the last word undoubtedly goes to Sarah. “Just do what you love doing every day and it will really pay off. You will learn from each thing you do - as what you have done before will guide your next steps. So if you think you’ve lost your way creatively, keep going and you’ll find you’re still on track.” Sarah is based at the Little Acre Studios in Rowledge and will be taking part in the Surrey Open Studios in June. Scrumptious strawberries
Strawberry & Rhubarb Crumble Roughly-chopped fruit with a dash of ginger wine and a crunchy bar crumble topping! This pudding is a great way to have something warming that still tastes like summer. Ingredients: 500g rhubarb; 100ml water; 100 grams golden caster sugar; 1 tbsp Stones ginger wine; 250g strawberries; 75g butter; 175g self-raising flour; 1/2 tsp ground ginger; 60g Demerera sugar; 1 Crunchie bar, crushed. Serves 6. Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 180˚c. 2. Trim and cut the rhubarb and place half of it in a saucepan with the golden caster sugar, the water and the ginger wine and simmer gently until syrupy. 3. Halve the strawberries then place all the fruit and rhubarb syrup into a baking dish. 4. To make the crumble, put the butter and flour into a bowl and rub with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, ginger and the crushed Crunchie bar and sprinkle generously over the fruit. 5. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.
Strawberry & Chocolate Fondue This strawberry chocolate fondue is a fun and easy chocolate dessert experience, where everyone gets to dip their strawberry in the lovely chocolate. Ingredients: 400g strawberries; 200g dark chocolate (or a mix of dark & milk if you prefer); 150g double cream; 100ml milk; a splash of liqueur (amaretto or cointreau is delicious), to taste (optional). Serves 6. Method: 1. Thread 2 or 3 of the berries onto skewers or

cocktail sticks and arrange on a plate. 2. Add all the fondue ingredients to a heatproof glass bowl and set over a pan of barely simmering water, making sure the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Allow the chocolate to melt very gently into the cream and milk, stirring frequently until you have a smooth creamy sauce. 3. Transfer the warm sauce to a fondue pot set over a low flame and serve immediately with the strawberries to dip in. If you don’t have a fondue pot, then leaving the bowl over a pan of warm water will help keep it liquid and dippable for longer.
Easy Strawberry Ice cream Making delicious homemade ice-cream doesn't have to be difficult thanks to this easy strawberry icecream that takes just 20 minutes to prepare and involves no whisking mid-freeze. Ingredients: 500ml good quality custard; 400ml double cream, lightly whipped; 1 vanilla pod, split; 500g strawberries; 4tsp caster sugar; mint leaves to garnish. Serves 8. Method: 1. In a bowl, fold together the custard, the whipped cream and the vanilla seeds scrapped from the pod. 2. Take 400g of strawberries, and blitz together with the sugar. Stir into the custard mix. Chop the rest of the strawberries, and add to the mix, folding through. 3. Line a 1 litre loaf tin with cling film and pour the mixture in. Freeze for a minimum of four hours. When ready to serve, take out of the freezer 10 minutes before you want to eat, and serve with some more fresh strawberries and a sprig of mint.

Charles Christianson Orangeries An orangery can add a real ‘wow’ factor to your home. It’s a fabulous way to add more family space to your house and open up the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. Many people choose to knock through connecting walls increasing the open-plan family space too. Interested in a Bespoke Orangery?
W
ith the uncertainty of the current housing market and homeowners increasingly adding space to their existing properties in favour of moving, The Orangery has never been so popular. An Orangery is such an attractive proposition because like a traditional brick built extension the temperature is easy to control in Summer and Winter because of the ‘warm roof’ technology surrounding the Roof Lantern and yet increases the light coming into the house through the lantern roof, bringing the outdoors in. It’s a great compromise between a Conservatory and a traditional extension. Thought to have originated in Italy, traditional Orangeries were constructed by British Aristocrats in the UK in the 17th century to grow orange and lemon trees in the Winter months.
The key to creating a successful orangery with beautiful proportions and fine detailing is to find a designer who both understands and appreciates traditional period detailing and the requirements of modern construction. Here at Charles Christianson we believe that we can provide exactly the right combination of understanding, experience and research to meet your design needs and guide you using tried and tested solutions. Contact us today to have a preliminary chat about your prospective project and make an appointment to discuss it in detail. We have a number of completed projects for you to view too if you’re looking for inspiration, or simply want to see our work and talk to our customers. What is the difference between an Orangery & a Conservatory? An Orangery is normally constructed from bricks and mortar and sometimes featuring full height brick pillars, a dwarf wall, glazed from the top of the wall to the ceiling and featuring a glazed Roof Lantern. In contrast a conservatory is made almost entirely of glass and is seen as more of a garden room making it separate to the rest of the house. ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

GARDENING Beth Otway
Sweetly scented summer shrubs
I
relish plants that produce fragrant flowers. Philadelphus aren’t the most memorable group of plants for ten or eleven months of the year, but while they’re in flower, these shrubs perfume the garden with their intoxicating and deliciously sweet scent. Philadelphus aren’t fussy plants, they’re fully hardy and flower reliably every year. Plant in full sun or partial shade, in any well-drained soil. The flowers produced by these cultivars are wonderfully fragrant: ‘Sybille’ reaches an eventual maximum height of 1.5m (5ft), spreading up to 2.5m (8ft) wide. This cultivar produces a bounty of open-centred, white flowers which are highlighted with mauve at their centre. The larger cultivar, ‘Beauclerk’ grows to a maximum of 2.5m (8ft) in height and width. Its flowers’ centres are blushed with mauve
As soon as your Philadelphus flowers start to fade, it’s time to prune your shrub. If your plant is displaying any dead or damaged stems, remove these first, cutting right back to ground level or the plant’s main stem. Next remove any thin, spindly growth. Then, cut back your plant’s faded flowering stems beyond their spent flowers, to encourage stronger growth. Finally, prune out and remove 25% of your shrub’s oldest stems. This will encourage your Philadelphus to produce strong new shoots. Philadelphus plants flower on their previous year’s growth. So, pruning immediately after flowering will give your plants the maximum amount of time to develop strong, new growth, to produce next year’s flowers. After pruning, water your plant well and mulch with peat-free compost. Philadelphus are deciduous shrubs, most cultivars produce simple, green leaves. If you’d like something a bit different, look out for Philadelphus coronarius ‘Variegatus’, which produces green leaves, outlined with pretty cream margins, or Philadelphus ‘Innocence’, whose green leaves are marked with irregular splashes of yellow. Both these plants’ eventual height and width will vary, depending on your soil, from 1.5 to 2.5 metres (5-8ft). Naturally, both of these plants produce the sweetly scented flowers that this genus of deciduous shrubs are famous for. Bees appreciate these open centred flowers, too.
If you have a small garden, don’t despair. Philadelphus 'Manteau d'Hermine' grows to an eventual maximum width of 1.5m (5ft) wide and a height of just 1m (3.3ft). The only drawback with this plant is that its pure white, double flowers aren’t accessible to bees. I’ve found Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ (height 1.5m (5ft) width 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft)) to be a great container plant. Once ‘Belle Etoile’ comes into bloom, the plant is welcomed onto my patio, where its flowers and their delectable fragrance are cherished, both by me and the local bees. Once the flowers fade, my plant is swiftly pruned, before it’s swapped out onto my growing area and replaced by another plant. Top: Philadelphus Belle Etoile. Right: Philadelphus flowers. WEEKEND WALK
Ranmore West and The Wotton Hatch
Denbies Hillside and neighbouring Ranmore Common are some of the richest chalk grasslands in south east England. The downs tumble towards to the pretty village of Westcott with beautiful views in all directions. Taken from www.nationaltrust.org.uk where a bigger map can be downloaded. 1. Leave the car park (marked 1 on the map) by the track just to the right of the noticeboard and swing further right once it gets into open space. You'll soon enter the woods and head due south. Here the path swings slightly left and rises as it goes south through dense woodland of mainly silver birch. Walk straight on at the first cross path where the path begins to slope downwards. 2. Follow the track onwards and soon you'll reach a cross path again (marked 2 on the map). You'll see a sign post (remember this for your return journey) where you need to turn right (west) onto the North Downs Way. Continue in a westerly direction along the North Downs Way; in some places trees have fallen down across the track. 3. Just after the North Downs Way begins to head downhill, you reach a pillbox dating to the Second World War - this is marked 3 on the map. Close to the pillbox is a gate - go through this and take the left fork down the hill. You'll leave the North Downs Way at this point. The track that you're walking along here leaves the woods and slopes further downhill - on the left there is a magnificent view over Dorking and Box Hill and if you look hard left one can see the spire of St Barnabas church on
Ranmore Common. About 100 metres down the slope there is a seat on the right - this is known as 'God's seat'. There are two versions of why it is called that. The first is that this is where God viewed his county of Surrey and the second is that if you are climbing the hill towards it, you may think "thank God I've made it". At the bottom of the hill swing right on the track which then falls quite steeply and then swings left where you'll come to a gate. Go through the gate and walk along the left hand side of the field and over the railway bridge. This is the Reading to Dorking line and is occasionally used by steam trains. Keep to the left hand side of the fields and to your left on the horizon you'll see the spire of St Barnabas church on Ranmore Common again. 4. At the end of the fields you reach a crossroads (marked 4 on the map) by a large house - here you leave the track and go half left (45 degrees) on a footpath going uphill across the field, signed by a disc. At the far side of the field keep on the path through the gate onto the fenced path going uphill until you reach St John the Evangelist church. Stay on the path round the right of the church and you will come to a gate onto a hard surfaced road where you turn right then walk up the towards the A25 and the Wotton Hatch pub. 5. On leaving the pub (marked 5 on the map), cross the main road and walk back down the small road that you came up. Follow this for about 100 metres then turn off right into the field at the public footpath sign. Follow the fence down the right hand side of the field and go past the two ponds where the path is quite narrow. 6. Continue downhill, ignoring the path that goes off to the right, and at the bottom of the hill there is a house on the right hand side and a cottage straight in front of you (marked 6 on the map). At this point turn right onto the surfaced road (this is marked as a public footpath) and continue straight on for 400 metres. At the start of this section there is an open field to your right and woods to your left - at the end of the first open field on your left, turn left onto an unmade road. 7. Walk along this unmade road almost due north towards the downs until you pass Coombe Farm and a pond on your right where you reach 'The Empty Box Company'. At this point swing right then left followed by, in about 100 metres, another right turn and then left turn under the railway bridge

Southern view from Denbies Vineyard (Colin Miller/NT)
(marked 7 on the map). As you emerge look right and you will see the spire of St Barnabas church again. On the far side of the railway, walk along the track at the left hand side of the field until you reach a gate - go through the gate (where you will see the National Trust sign) and then turn right and you are now on a stretch called the 'Carriage Way'. This was built in the mid 1800s by the Cubbitt family who at that time owned the Denbies estate. They used this stretch to show their guests what the surrounding countryside looked like. Walk along the Carriage Way at the bottom of the scarp slope - the hill you can see in front of you is Colley Hill. You are in buzzard country here so keep an eye in the sky to glimpse these magnificent birds. Recently there have also been sightings of red kites in the area. 8. Go through the first gate and the first set of woods, ignoring the bridle path. When you reach a 'five ways' (marked 8 on the map) take the second left track which goes up the hill. The hollow on your left is a disused lime kiln. Shortly after turning off the main track the path you are on splits - take the right fork (which is marked 'The Denbies Nature Trail') where it climbs quite steeply through some woods then passes through a gate into open hillside. The path cuts diagonally across the open downland. The buildings below you are Landbarn Farm, owned and managed by the National Trust. Due south from here if you look closely, you can see Leith Hill Tower on the horizon through a gap in the trees. At the fence line at the top of the downs turn
left along the grassy path close by the fence - from this section the view to the left must be one of the finest of this part of Surrey (and some of Sussex). 9. Continue on this path, which rises gradually, until you reach the top left corner of the field where you will need to climb over a stile (marked 9 on the map) and turn left (ignoring the path that goes down the slope). You are now back on the North Downs Way, heading west. After about 700 metres you will reach the signpost that you saw at the start of your walk. Turn right here, head up the hill and the car park (marked 1 on the map) is about 500 metres along this track.

We do love a crime drama series on TV, but is it us or are they getting more and more complicated to follow? We have just watched the last episode of Line of Duty and we seem to have more questions than answers! However, we both sat riveted to every episode and can’t wait for the next series to begin. On the Jottings front, it’s been another busy month with lots of different events taking place throughout June. Have a great month and let’s hope it’s a warm and sunny one. Surrey Artists’ Open Studios Wednesday 1st to Thursday 16th June For sixteen days in June Surrey artists will be welcoming the public into their studios for the annual Surrey Artists’ Open Studios (SAOS) event taking place in artist’s studios right across the county. There will be 297 artists taking part in 180 studios, the largest event to date. As well as a chance to meet and talk to artists in their place of work, the summer open studios event offers visitors the opportunity to view demonstrations, buy artwork, enter a free prize draw and even get involved in creative workshops. Studio locations are throughout Surrey and its borders. Full details at www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk. There is a special Golden Valley Art Trail this year, more information is at www. facebook.com/goldenvalleyarttrail/. The Supercar Event Saturday 1st June If you’re looking to keep the kids entertained this May halfterm, then look no further; The Supercar Event returns to Goodwood Motor Circuit, Chichester. It will offer once-in-alifetime passenger rides in some of the world’s most iconic and luxurious supercars from just £20. The money raised will go to The Children’s Trust charity, helping children with brain injury. There will also be a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Family ticket (2 adult, 2 children aged 4-16) £30, adult ticket £12, child and concession tickets £8. VIP tickets £160. Supercar rides must be purchased separately. Be ‘speedy’ and book now, visit www.thesupercarevent.com. Grayshott Folk Club Saturday 1st June 7.30pm They present Texan guitarist/singer/song-writer Jarrod
Dickenson. He’s touring all over the UK and Europe before performing at Cambridge Folk Festival on Sunday 4th August, on the same bill as Richard Thompson, Fisherman's Friends and The Unthanks. Jarrod has supported legendary artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Don McLean and The Waterboys and he has acquired a formidable and loyal bunch of fans across the globe. Listen to Jarrod Dickenson at www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uCqWky8DgM. Support is provided by Ben & Steve Somer, a father and son combination who play across the genres of Jazz, Folk and Roots music. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr3lxwakFek. Tickets: adults £15/under 16s £8; call Des O'Byrne on 01428 607096. Takes place at Grayshott Village Hall, Headley Road, Grayshott, Nr. Hindhead GU26 6TZ. Brush Stroke Saturday 1st June to Friday 21st June A stroke survivor from Grayshott has discovered a hidden talent for painting and hopes his exhibition at Haslemere Museum will inspire other stroke survivors to discover a new purpose for their life. Andrew Bailey, who suffered a devastating stroke ten years ago, has been left with reduced sight and debilitating speech, cognitive and language problems. The months following his stroke were an incredibly difficult time for Andrew and his family, however, art has given Andrew something to focus on, a distraction from all the things he could no longer do. Do call into the museum and see for yourselves this inspirational exhibition of his work. Entry is free. More information at www. haslemeremuseum.co.uk. National Garden Scheme From 1st June Lots of gardens open in June as this is the busiest month! Too many sadly to list here but they include Lordington House near Chichester with over 100 roses since 2008, and Lowder Mill in Fernhurst with much of interest (both 1st and 2nd June). Further afield, there is Dale Park House near Arundel with its parkland and magnificent sea views (Sunday 9th June), Durford Abbey Barn, Petersfield with its cottage garden (15th and 16th June) and Sedgwick Park House, Horsham with formal gardens by Harold Peto featuring interlinking ponds and water garden with fine views of the South Downs and Chanconbury Ring. T: 01428 620110 / 07967 778232 info@smart-pro.co.uk Have you ever returned to your car and found it to be damaged? Maybe a small, but annoying dent, caused by a door being opened against it? A scrape from another driver’s parking error? A vandal scratch on the paint work? Or maybe you have misjudged a gateway, brushed a kerb with an alloy wheel, or scuffed a bumper corner? Smart Pro offers a mobile dent removal and paint repair service, specialising in small to medium area repairs, to body shop standard, at your home or place of work. Most repairs take only a few hours to complete and cost less than your insurance excess! The customer of this Honda Jazz was facing an insurance claim, which would have resulted in the bumper being replaced and the loss of their £250 excess. Smart Pro was able to repair the damage for much less than the excess and with no insurance claim on their record!
