Ed the Invincible by Vance Reeser
Dedicated to my parents.
It was the night before his first day of school, and Ed was very nervous. “I am going to get you, Edward!” said a strange voice from outside his window. Ed looked and saw it was the monster that lives on the moon! The monster spoke again, “I will send my meanest, smelliest creatures to your school tomorrow!” and then he laughed a big toothy laugh. So that night Ed told his parents all about it and slept in their bed.
Ed’s parents worried all night for their son’s safety and came up with a plan. They created a “Suit of Invincibility” for Ed and put him inside of it. They told him it was magical and would keep him safe at school. Ed felt a little silly in the Suit but thought, “Anything has to be better than getting attacked by monsters.”
When Ed arrived at school, just as he feared there were monsters everywhere! The classroom was full of scary creatures of all dierent shapes and sizes, colors and smells!
At recess, Ed hid behind a tree and hoped the Suit would keep him safe.
Slowly Ed realized the biggest, smelliest monster of them all, RODNEY, was standing right next to him, breathing on him! “What are you wearing, you little marshmallow?!” RODNEY the monster said. Ed was so terrified he shut his eyes and froze. This made RODNEY very angry so he started slobbering and growling! RODNEY suddenly swung his tentacle to hit Ed in the face! He missed and hit Ed’s helmet, sending it flying into the air!
Now that his helmet was o, Ed saw that his classmates were regular kids just like him and not monsters at all.
That night the MOON MONSTER talked to Ed again through his window. “Tomorrow I’m going to send even bigger and smellier creatures to get you at school!” he said. Ed flew up to the moon in the Suit of Invincibility. He took off his helmet to get a good look at the MOON MONSTER and saw that he wasn’t nearly as big and scary as he thought - and on top of that - he was using a big machine to make his voice loud!
Ed said, “You’re just a big liar! Those aren’t MONSTERS, they’re just kids!” The MOON MONSTER looked pathetic and said he would stop yelling things at Ed through his window at night. So Ed flew home, took off the Suit of Invincibility and fell asleep.
The next day, Ed decided not to wear the Suit to school. He told his parents he didn’t need it anymore, and they were very relieved to hear it. At recess that day, Ed made lots of new friends and played fun games with them.
Some nights though, he puts the Suit back on and fights to keep the world safe from monsters before he goes to sleep.
