Assistant Professor of Art Advanced Graphic Design Fall 2013 MAPPING FOR A NARRATIVE ATLAS During the Fall Semester 2013 at the University of NebraskaLincoln, students of “Advanced Graphic Design and Design Studio 421 / 426” authored a collection of maps, charts and diagrams that centered around the concept of “Water and System.” Each designed artifact addressed aspects of individual design research and illustrates various methods of investigation. Projects engaged students in the invention of unique graphic systems that visualize information about water. The designs represent quantitative and qualitative narratives and illustrate individual perspectives and interests. These visual displays of water and system were compiled into an atlas — a book of maps, charts, illustrations or diagrams united by the subject of water and system. The atlas represents a coordinated body of methods, a scheme or plan of procedure that was used to organize data from design research. Various production methods were considered and students were encouraged to explore a wide variety of media and design strategies. These methods were evaluated on their effectiveness as generators of visual information with respect to their project goals and intended meanings.

THE PROCESS In order to create our atlas, we had to think of a way of how we would describe water and categorize them in specific elements. Like water can be seen as mobility, nourishment, health, wellness, problem,habitat, wealth, and etc. For my project I see water as health, nourishment, wellness, entertainment, and a system. By categorizing these elements, I was able to find images that would relate to the words I picked.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT I’m very interested in sports so my focus was comparing the use of gatorade and water. We all know that gatorade is one of the top selling sport beverage in the United States and also in other countries. We see athletes drink it during games, pratices, and even during their spare time. Now, we pretty much see it in our everyday life, little kids are starting to consume them now instead of juice or milk. it’s amazing how people believe that a drink can help them perform better. I feel like it’s all hype and you don’t need it. I think water can give you the ability to perform to your limit and also give the benefits that gatorade does. Water contains nothing but minerals, but gatorade contains, sugar, citric acid, flavor enhacer, and a list of ingredients that i feel is not important for your body. Therefore, my goal is to compare and contrast the difference between them too and persuade younger adults and teens to stop consuming sports beverages and drink water instead.

DO THEY NEED IT?

PROJECT 1 The purpose of this project is to inform young kids to drink water instead of gatorade or any kind of sports drink. Describing the benefits of water and how it plays a huge role in your body and daily life and the difference between them two. Such as showing nutrition facts, ingredients in the beverages, how much is produce and how much is also sold throughout the United States.

IT’S THE SAME
I believe that water does the same thing that gatorade does. It replenish your body, keep you hydrated, gives you energy and help you maintain mobility and function. The only thing that gatorde do diffferently is that they fill your body with elektrolytes and give you a burst of energy in the moment of the game. Water tend to last longer too than gatorade and in the long run, water is just better for you.
IMAGE LIBRARY In the process of our design, we would need to collect at least 200 images or more that would represent our purpose of our project. Creating an image library helped us able to incoporate what we thought about water and brianstorm from there, which would lead to our design process.

PROJECT 1
For our first project, we would have to create a design that would display our information but in a visual way. We would need to create graphs, charts and diagrams that would describe what we are talking about. How I started was, looking up inspirations online, and different variations of graphs and charts that were not simple but visually interesting to look at.

FINAL DESIGN
This project is explaining the annunal sales between the two drink. I want to inform my audience that although water is still beating gatorade in sales, I still think gatorade still have a large sum in the United States. It’s bad, how much gatorade is selling throughout the year. It shows that people still need it in order to play well in sports or just prefer it over water.

The second project focus on the difference between gatorade and water. I’m going to breakdown the ingredients and compare how both of them plays a huge role in your body and which one should be needed and the other not.

INSPIRATION For my design, I wanted to create something that wasn’t hard to comprehend but something that is visually interesting. I wanted to stay true to the concept of my first design and keep the color qualities. Some inspirations that I found online, help me develop my design concept. The mojority of my inspirations were infographics and exploring different ways of creating graphs and charts to display my information.

FINAL DESIGN
This concept is explaining the difference between water and gatorade. My goal is to persuade young teens to not drink gatorade daily but only have it during vigorous activities or doing something physical. When you’re not, it’s better to have water instead because water plays a huge role in your body and you will understand by looking at the infographic.

CONCLUSION
The purpose of this atlas is to help persuade parents, coaches, and kids that there is no need to have sports drink in a daily basis. It’s not good for you and it can affect your health. Water is the best solution for you and that there is so many benefits in it. Also comparing the nutrition facts and ingredients should also give you a idea of whats better for you and what is not. In my opinion, I feel like it’s ok to have gatorade but only when you’re active and doing something physical. I think that you shouldn’t have it on a daily basis such as lunch, dinner or as a snack. Ity’s not good for you.
