2018

MUSEUM CENTRE VAPRIIKKI Elected the Musem of the Century in 2017, Vapriikki is a museum centre that offers things to see and do for the whole family beside the Tammerkoski rapids. We host about a dozen exhibitions each year, with varied themes, including history, technology, and natural sciences. Vapriikki is also home to the Natural History Museum of Tampere, the Mineral Museum, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, the Rupriikki Media Museum, the Doll Museum, the Postal Museum and the Finnish Museum of Games. Our visitors are also served by museum restaurant Valssi and the Vapriikki museum shop, which offers a wide selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs. Vapriikki is housed in the old Tampella factory hall, whose oldest sections date back to the 1880s. The large exhibition hall, a hundred metres long and 16 metres high, was built in the 1910s–1920s. Vapriikki opened to the public in 1996, and the building was fully ready as a museum in 2000. The total floor area of the museum centre is approximately 14,000 m², half of which is devoted to exhibition facilities and premises open to the public.

Until 2 December 2018 The exhibition allows visitors to get close to the sensitive and intelligent woman behind the legend of Marilyn Monroe. Witty, creative and determined, Marilyn was very deliberate about building her career and image. The camera loved Marilyn. The sensual movie star soon became the embodiment of beauty adored by all and a fashion icon whose style is still admired today. T he Vapriikki exhibition dives into Marilyn’s world: its outward beauty, success and glamour, but also its other side – the star’s lonely internal world, full of misfortune. The exhibition has over 300 of Marilyn’s personal items on display – including famous garments, shoes, makeup, jewellery, photos and film scripts. Enlarged photos and film material complement the image of a strong yet vulnerable film star. Presented are more than 300 selected pieces from the private collection Ted Stampfer, the world's largest collection of Marilyn Monroe originals of its kind.

Birckala 1017

Until 17 March 2019

The Birckala 1017 exhibition allows visitors to travel through time and visit a village in Northern Häme a millennium ago. You will get to know smithing skills, about cooking outdoors, and the fighting equipment of swordsmen. An audio guide takes you to the village of Tursiannotko, where a Viking era family talks about their life. This exhibition offers plenty to see, do and learn for the whole family. Birckala 1017 makes bold interpretations to reveal plenty of researched information about the Iron Age in the Northern Häme area. The exhibition objects and narratives are based on archeological excavations carried out by the Pirkanmaa Provincial Museum and University of Helsinki in Tursiannotko in 2012–2017.

THE FINNISH MUSEUM OF GAMES The exhibition at the Finnish Museum of Games chronicles the evolution of the Finnish gaming industry from small projects to state-of the-art international game production. It focuses on about a dozen eras of gaming, extending from the 19th century to the present day. Visitors can enjoy the gaming atmosphere in various theme-based rooms decorated in period style. The museum also has an arcade where you can play classic coin-operated games. Land of Roleplay 7 Sep 2018–6 Jan 2019 Land of Roleplay is an exhibition on Finnish roleplaying games and the people, events and players associated with the scene. It tells the story of how roleplaying began in Finland and how it has evolved over the years. TAMMERKOSKI RAPIDS AND STORY OF TAMPERE The Tammerkoski Rapids exhibition tells the story of how a small village grew into an industrial city now known for technological innovation, high-standard cultural offerings, and its residents’ modest and down-to-earth attitude as expressed in a popular local saying: 'Let's not make a fuss now.' The exhibition presents lives of Tampere residents from different eras via a much-loved miniature model of Tampere as it stood in 1890.

MUSEUM SHOP Vapriikki’s spacious entrance lobby houses the museum shop, providing a quality selection of high quality gifts, jewellery, ornaments and utility articles, books, postcards and sweets.

If you have a dear doll or teddybear of your own, bring it along to the exhibition and take a portrait of it at a dolls’ studio.

The revamped Tampere 1918 exhibition depicts the events that took place in Tampere in the spring of 1918. Perspectives are offered by the fighters on both sides, but civilians and onlookers are not overlooked either. The exhibition presents a large cross-section of society at war, from children and old people to workers and factory managers. A powerful collection of items gathered from the battlefields and streets of Tampere in spring 1918, now part of Tampere museums’ collections, tell their haunting story. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Department of History at the University of Tampere.

RUPRIIKKI MEDIA MUSEUM The Rupriikki exhibition showcases the past and the present of information networks. The networked world of today has followed from inventions made in the 19th century, but is also driven by the very human need to be in contact with other people. Displayed are also examples of Tampere-based communication companies. Many long-forgotten means of communication are brought back to life through interactive applications. Rupriikki plays with our habits of media consumption and focuses on the role of social media in our daily lives.

TAMPERE MINERAL MUSEUM The Tampere Mineral Museum displays the interesting world of stones and minerals. The displays give priority to impressive, colourful stones, and the museum showcases both cut and raw precious stones and gemstones, ornamental stones, stones used in construction, and synthetic stones. Samples of minerals, ores, and metals are also on display, as are meteorites and fossils, such as dinosaur eggs.

The Postal Museum offers a wonderful experience for the entire family and invites everyone to explore. The Messengers exhibition takes visitors on a tour of the long history of postal and communications services from the 1600´s up to today. See the quaint living quarters of a peasant farmer whose job it was to deliver mail, the stormy Sea of Ă…land, workrooms of famous Finnish artists and hear touching stories from the war years. Wake up the sleeping postmaster, peek into a telescope to find stamps on the world map, ride a talking mail horse, study postal routes or become engrossed in nostalgic films.

17 November 2017 – 4 November 2018 It will be 40 years since punk came to Finland. The Fanzines and Punk Mail exhibition will feature phenomena that arrived with punk. 1977 saw a surge of alternative magazines and this also marked the start of a culture of DIY ethic, which is still strong today. A number of interesting and influential magazine-makers and punk rockers from the past and present will be included. Exchanging punk letters and punk records with fans in the USA and the UK were part of the internationalisation process for many young people. The letters also spread the word about Finnish punk bands abroad. The exhibits will include photos, punk letters and other punk-related material, and visitors can read alternative magazines and listen to singles and tapes.

Marilyn Monroe’s film career in postcards

19 June – 26 August 2018

Philatelist Risto Pitkänen’s collection of postcards covers Marilyn Monroe’s film career. In Marilyn’s heyday, the printed media were important publicity tools; stories in magazines and newspapers, postcards, posters and various trading cards were the means of marketing both films and their stars. It was often postcards that film studios sent to fans in response to their letters. The collection features photographs originally taken for various marketing purposes, which were then later printed as postcards. Some cards in the collection are originals, others are reprints.

Marilyn & Co. 28 August–14 October 2018

Philatelist Risto Pitkänen’s FDC collection contains first day covers of stamps featuring Marilyn, with different first day of issue postmarks. There are also first day covers featuring Marilyn’s co-stars and people who were important to her career. The collection also has a significant number of her co-stars’ autographs on first day covers.
