SUSTAINABLE ASSISTANCE TO MILITARY, VETERANS, AND THIER FAMILIES

10

Year number two at VETCares has brought us to the edge of reality in a new non-profit startup. The truth is that every new company, every new start-up, includes honest moments of when to cut losses, shift with the market and economic times, pick up the pieces, focus on the gains, and forge new plans of success for the next year.

VETCares stands behind our beliefs, that we need to “lead by example”, and “sustainability is the best long-term business plan”. With that line of thinking we launched the first VETCares Thrift Store which officially opened in August 2022, in Las Vegas, NV. As with many new retail ventures, it takes time to get the word out of a new store in town. We hired all the right people, met all the right community leaders, held all the thrift discounts people anticipate from a thrift store, and began to gain public support for the store and, especially the mission. The Las Vegas people were getting behind the mission and wanting to do all they could to support the store. As times moved forward and the economy grew tougher, we realized that despite our best efforts, the one thing that we lacked was the right location for a successful thrift store to thrive in Las Vegas. Location, location, location. With all

the information that we had learned for successful set up, operating procedures, and our donation fundraising expertise, we steadily moved forward to a successful Thrift Store. To build a flourishing operation, one of the most important details is a high foot-traffic site, which we soon realized we were missing. So, we had to accept the reality of the situation, and made the decision at the end of August to cut our losses and close the store doors. Although the decision was bittersweet given everything we put into the endeavor, we are confident in the future years to come, that we will once again open a successful VETCares Thrift store at the right time and thriving location. There is no doubt the next store will be one of many that will help support our grants and veterans in the years to come. We thank everyone that put in long days, many hours lifting and moving furniture, decorating the store on a daily basis, and the Las Vegas community for their time, dedication, donations, and support to veterans through VETCares. Your continued assistance is greatly appreciated!

Moving forward to ensure VETCares’ sustainability plan and mission assisting veterans, VETCares has officially launched an upgrade to the Vehicle Donation Program and is now the Vehicle Property Donation Program. VETCares is setup to accept real estate property donations in support of veterans!

Donating real estate to a nonprofit can feel like a major burden has been lifted from your shoulders, especially when a piece of property has been sitting idle for some time. Considering the yearly property tax bill or the capital gains taxes owed if you choose to sell, it may be a smarter option to donate. If you inherited real estate or have vacant land that you just don’t know what to do with, give us a call. Donating 11

property to VETCares is a solution that helps veterans and simultaneously takes the dayto-day contemplation about the property off your hands. A bonus is the large tax deduction.

WHY DO PEOPLE DONATE CARS?

We accept all types of real estate donations: estates, land, houses, vacation cottages, farms, rental property buildings, commercial real estate, and more. 12

Maybe you have heard of people donating vehicles to non-profit organizations, and maybe you even know someone who has, but you haven’t really thought about all the reasons donating a vehicle may be a good idea for you.

Once you consider the different reasons why people donate instead of selling their vehicles, you might be interested in donating a vehicle to VETCares yourself. Surprisingly enough, it is sometimes better to donate a car to charity than to sell it or trade it in for a newer model. When you donate your car, you not only benefit from tax breaks, but enjoy the satisfaction of giving to support veterans in multiple ways. Here are some factors to consider when choosing to sell or donate your vehicle: Tax Breaks: Financial incentives are an important reason people give their old possessions to charity rather than discard them. The value of a tax break helps when you donate clothes, toys, books, bicycles, boats, automobiles, and more… Tax deductions for car donations are determined in part by the value of the car, and in part by how the car is used by the car donation charity that receives it. Avoiding Hassle: Selling a used car is difficult. Generally, the seller needs to have the car fully serviced, cleaned, and possibly touched up or even completely repainted. There can be a lot of expense into making a car look good enough to sell, even before settling on an asking price or deciding whether to sell to a dealer or direct to a buyer. People often donate cars to avoid

this hassle. Moreover, it is possible to attract criminals to your home when you have a valuable object for sale. Rather than take the risk, you can simply call the charity of your choice and have the car towed free of expense. Getting Rid of a Car As-Is: For some people, the expense of fixing their car only to sell it is too much, so they donate the car as-is. This may reduce their tax break, but the car donation company often accepts cars with mild damage. Saving Time: In addition to being expensive and stressful, selling a used car can take a lot of valuable time. Some people sit on their used cars for months before agreeing to sell them to the highest bidder, and even then, they don’t get their asking price they wanted. People donate cars to save time, getting rid of the car as soon as possible and moving on to other tasks that need to be completed.

2. TOW – They will schedule a vehicle pick-up, at no cost to you.

3. SOLD - Receive a donation receipt for tax benefit at the time of the pick-up.

If you have a vehicle that you have been struggling with what to do with, donating it to VETCares to support veterans could be just the solution you were looking for!

VETCARES GRANT PROGRAMS 2023 Given the current economic climate with increased pricing on material goods, food, gas, and services, veterans are challenged more and more with making ends meet. Accordingly, VETCares’ grant requests doubled this year with veterans seeking multiple areas for financial assistance. 2023 brought the ability to increase the number of grants VETCares provided to veterans and their families in each of the current grant program categories: Calloway Closing Cost Grant, 13

Stop Drop Push Grant, Military Veteran Emergency Grant, and a successful 2023 Camp Cares Event. VETCares depleted each of their grant budgets for the current year and are now focused on replenishing these funds in preparation to accept grants in Spring 2024. VETCares’ goal is to help more veterans with each year we grow.

purchase scheduled to close the following Monday. Thanks to an amazing team working together, we finalized the many details required to meet the program guidelines, got the family enough funds, and the purchase closed on time. It is rare that we can handle items so quickly, but when we can, it is exciting to see the relief for the veteran and their family.

What we have learned this year through our application process is that many veterans believe they can make it on their own and do not think they need help. When speaking with many of them, most believed they would find a way to make it work, and it’s apparent that pride would stop them from asking for help early when truly needed. Often, the requests we receive are literally at the last minute: being evicted in 2 days, repossessing car tomorrow, closing on a home in 4 days, foreclosing in a week, etc. These are difficult requests to work through and most times, we are not able to make them happen on such short notice.

Through various donations and VETCares fundraising efforts the past two years, we were able to help several veterans through our grant programs.

However, sometimes we get lucky and can move quickly. This was the case with a recent request for closing costs through the Calloway Closing Cost Grant. VETCares’ received an application on a Thursday for a closing cost grant for a

14

1. MVEG: Assist veteran families with paying their rent, mortgage, car repairs, and utility bills. These costs range between $300 and $3,000 per family, depending on their specific situation and needs.

2. SDP: This year we were partnered with Krystalore Crews & Beyond to send a female Veteran through

their program, to restore women with other women and leaders in business, to provide support needed to move forward. Costs for SDP programs range between $250 and $4,000 per program, again depending on the individual's specific healing needs.

3. CCCG: We were able to assist veteran families with the closing costs on their first-time home purchases. The CCCG is a designated $2,000 gift for families that meet the HUD LMI guidelines. Once approved, funds are delivered to the Title Company on behalf of the recipient, just before closing.

4. CampCares: VETcares flew Veterans to Montana to attend the VETCares’ 2023 Camp Cares program in September. Costs to send a veteran through the camp have increased since last year by approximately onethird, averaging $2,500 per

veteran. This covers flights, nightly accommodations, cleaning, food, travel to and from the airport and events, fly fishing guide fees, PEER counseling program, and gear. Veterans who attend the camp have their needs completely taken care of during the program and share their perception transformation, along with their gratitude, at the end of each program. When you see or hear of a veteran struggling, please encourage them to reach out to a local VA case worker for help as soon as possible. Most of the veterans that find us have been informed about our grants through VA resources. Please also share our information with other veteran organizations so they may share the programs that VETCares offers.

IN SUMMARY We have barely touched our veterans’ needs this year and it is time to get back to fundraising, sponsorships, corporate matching donations, and all other ways necessary to replenish our grant budgets, so we may help more veterans in 2024. To continue

assisting our veterans we need your help. We rely on private foundation grants, public support donations, corporate fundraising, and many other ways of giving – but your help is the most important. As always, for us to be able to reach our goals, we are calling on you to help us in the following ways: 1. Donate to any of our grant programs and share the fundraising campaigns. Please also share our social media posts informing others of our fundraising efforts to assist the military and veteran communities. 2. If you have a car sitting idle in the garage, donate it to the VETCares Vehicle Donation Program. Please share our program with everyone you know and share our social media posts. 3. Donate property – Maybe you or someone you know has inherited a property or is overseeing an estate with unwanted real estate - share with them that they can help veterans and themselves by donating it to VETCares.

4. Watch for and spread the word about our 4th quarter specific fundraising efforts: CARTOBER – focused on car donations to non-profits; Giving Tuesday - created in 2012 as a simple idea, a day that encourages people to do good. This year it is set for November 28; and let’s not forget the Season of Giving to round out the year. 5. Donate today to VETCares and support veterans on multiple levels! We would not be able to help veterans without your generous donations, sharing information and supporting VETCares! At VETCares, our motto is “ABF” – Always Be Fundraising, so that we may support our military and veteran communities . . . one donation at a time . . . one veteran at a time! Thank you . . . you make the difference for our service members and veterans!

G N I R E MAST Reels m a r g a t s n I

In today's digital age, social media has become an indispensable tool for businesses and organizations looking to connect with their audience in creative and engaging ways. Among the various platforms available, Instagram Reels 16

has emerged as a dynamic tool for capturing attention and fostering brand engagement. As the Social Media Director at VAREP I've had the privilege of exploring the potential of Instagram Reels, and I'm excited to share some tips on how you can make the

most of this feature for your organization. Start with a Strategy Before diving into Instagram Reels, it's crucial to have a clear strategy in mind. Determine your goals, target audience, and the type of content that

aligns with your brand. Are you aiming to educate, entertain, or inspire your audience? Your strategy should guide your content creation process. Craft Attention-Grabbing Thumbnails A compelling thumbnail can make all the difference in whether viewers decide to watch your Reel or scroll past it. Take the time to design eye-catching thumbnails that encapsulate the essence of your video and pique curiosity. Keep It Short and Sweet Instagram Reels are designed to be short, snappy videos lasting up to 60 seconds. Embrace brevity and focus on delivering your message succinctly. A concise, wellstructured Reel is more likely to hold the viewer's attention. Show Your Personality Reels are a great opportunity to showcase your brand's personality and culture. Don't be afraid to infuse humor, authenticity, or behind-thescenes glimpses into your content. People connect with people, so let your brand's human side shine. Leverage Trending Sounds and Challenges Instagram Reels often feature trending sounds and challenges. Participating

in these trends can help increase the discoverability of your content and engage with a broader audience. Be sure to add your unique twist to stand out.

"Craft attentiongrabbing thumbnails that encapsulate the essence of your video and pique curiosity." Use Text and Captions Incorporate text overlays and captions to convey your message effectively, especially when audio isn't a primary element of your Reel. Clear and concise text can enhance viewer comprehension and engagement. Consistency Matters Consistency is key in building an audience on Instagram. Try to post Reels regularly, ideally on a schedule that aligns with your target audience's active times. Consistency helps keep your brand top of mind and encourages followers to return for more. Engage with Your Audience Don't forget that social media is a two-way street. Engage with comments, respond to messages, and build a community around

your content. The more you interact with your audience, the more loyal and invested they'll become. Monitor Analytics Instagram provides valuable insights into your Reel's performance. Pay attention to metrics like views, likes, comments, and shares to gauge which content resonates best with your audience. Use this data to refine your strategy over time. Experiment and Innovate Lastly, don't be afraid to experiment with different formats, styles, and content ideas. The social media landscape is ever-evolving, and what works today may not work tomorrow. Keep an eye on emerging trends and be willing to adapt your approach accordingly. In conclusion, Instagram Reels can be a powerful tool for organizations looking to boost their online presence and engage with their audience. By implementing these tips and staying attuned to your audience's preferences, you can leverage Instagram Reels to build a stronger online brand presence for your organization. Happy Reeling!

HOUSING COUNSELING CORNER 3 Benefits of Buying a Home in Today’s Market While rising interest rates affect overall affordability, there are a few surprising advantages for home buyers in a cooling market. Now is a good time to educate yourself about the homebuying process, and to take advantage of down payment assistance programs and first-time buyer loans. Mortgage rates are ticking up. Since late 2020, rates have increased from a 2.5% average to as high as 7%. Unfortunately for homebuyers, a higher rate translates into higher monthly payments. This has produced unaffordable mortgage payments for the common family. For a median-priced home, recent interest rate hikes have added $300 to 18

$400 more to the average mortgage per month. Just because the general cost of buying a home has been affected by the rising rates, there are still a few surprising advantages to a cooling market. There is no better time than now, to get educated on the process of purchasing a home, by attending one of our Homebuyer Education workshops. You may even receive one-onone counseling with the HUD Counselors at USA Homeownership Foundation. That way you are prepared and can calculate how much you can afford to buy with your budget, income, and expenses. The overarching benefit is that there is less

competition for homes. And less competing for the same asset brings a host of buyer benefits. Here are three of them: BUYING A HOME Benefit #1: Lower Housing Prices Benefit #2: More Home Choices Available Benefit #3: Less Buyer Risk Benefit #1: Lower Housing Prices During the past two years’ low interest environment, there were many buyers competing for a historically low inventory of homes for sale. You have probably heard about multiple offers over asking price being the norm. Supply and demand

were out of control in this crazy market, but rising interest rates are helping to rectify that issue. Higher interest rates reduce the number of buyers who qualify for a mortgage loan, thereby reducing the competition for homes.

inventory of homes available – mean there are more choices available for qualified homebuyers. While homes are still selling relatively quickly compared to before the pandemic, the housing market is seeing homes stay on the market longer. With additional listings coming on market Higher Interest Rates Have and longer “days on Two Effects on The Housing market” for current listings, Market That Can Help Drive inventory is increasing. And Down Prices: that is a good thing for buyers. 1. They price some buyers out of the market (which MORE: So You Want to is good for the buyers Buy a House? A Guide for who remain). First-Time Homebuyers 2. They typically have the effect of putting downward pressure on housing prices which is good for buyers. Benefit #2: More Home Choices Available While rising interest rates continue to take out buyers who can no longer afford the higher monthly payments, something else is happening. More inventory is coming on the market. In June 2022, inventory was up 19% over the year prior. These two trends – rising interest rates and more

Benefit #3: Less Buyer Risk Over the past two years of buyer competition chasing limited supply of homes, many buyers were waiving offer contingencies. Why? Because offers with fewer contingencies present a better chance of being chosen by the seller. However, among the contingencies that were being waived included two important ones: The inspection and the appraisal.

With the market evening out, inspection and appraisal contingencies are re-emerging. Here is why that is a good thing for buyers: The Inspection Purchasing a home involves considerable unknowns, which can carry risks. You are buying a tangible asset that is subject to wear and tear. As Murphy’s Law would have it, the moment you move in, a major (and expensive) system like the HVAC will fail. In a normal market, the buyer requires an opportunity to inspect the home. If they do not like what the home inspection shows, they can cancel the contract. HUD requires housing counselors to educate buyers on the importance of an inspection to know the true condition of the house. This is a critical step to understanding what you are buying. A licensed inspector will provide you with information regarding the age and condition of vital structural and mechanical details that a homebuyer needs to know. How many

19

years of life are left on the roof? Is the HVAC system functioning properly? Does the foundation have a crack that threatens the home’s stability? Consumers and agents are not trained to see these things, but an inspector is. While the results of an inspection are not normally an opportunity for renegotiation of the offer price, it can serve that purpose if conditions require substantial repairs. The Appraisal The market over the past two years favored cash buyers and buyers with a substantial down payment saved. That is because bidding wars were pushing prices above the seller’s asking price. This often meant the home would not be appraised for the offer price. For borrowers, that created a problem. When securing a mortgage, the lender often requires a well-researched value assessment by an independent licensed appraiser. After all, they want to ensure the home is worth the amount of money 20

they agree to finance. As a result, only buyers with additional cash to pay the difference between offer price and appraised price were able to compete, as sellers would only accept an over-listing price offer if the buyer could sign an appraisal gap addendum.

day they hit the market, with multiple offers pushing prices well over listing price. The market needed a correction to quell the buying frenzy. Thankfully, with rising interest rates and increasing inventory, the housing market is returning to normal.

Should You Buy Now? While there are sensationalized headlines about a housing market crash circulating on the internet, most agents who have their boots on the ground are not seeing an imminent crash, but rather a much-needed market correction. In a survey of 1,000 agents by Homelight about the current housing conditions, the consensus was generally optimistic. There are fewer bidding wars, fewer offers, and more price reductions.

There is a healthier balance between buyers (demand) and sellers (supply). Higher interest rates are also pushing home sales prices down, as buyers can afford less.

If you are looking to buy a home within the next 12 months, it may be wise to buy now and lock in today’s interest rate. If you can wait at least 12 to 24 months to purchase your home, that might not be a bad decision and it can give you time to get educated, save more for a down payment, These are signs of merely a and get HUD housing shift, not a housing market counseling to prepare you crash. Let’s face it, the 2-3% for homeownership. interest rate was not going to last forever. And in most In addition, if inflation has markets, highly desirable subsided by then, the Fed homes in low inventory is likely to begin reducing markets are selling the first interest rates again.

So, at that point, home prices may be slightly lower than they are today while interest rates may be very similar. The Bottom Line It is natural to think of rising interest rates as all bad news for homebuyers. After all, higher rates mean higher monthly payments when taking on the same amount of mortgage debt. But that does not mean there is no silver lining to buying when rates are high. There is likely to be less buyer competition for the home you want, plus there is the potential that the higher rates will provide downward pressure on sales prices. And remember, you can always refinance when rates come down again, provided that your income and credit score remain strong. The bottom line? If it is time to move, do not let higher interest rates put your home buying plans on hold. Let’s dive into a riveting journey across the tempestuous seas as we unravel the tale of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), a saga embroidered with valor and an unwavering call to duty. It all began with a spark of vision by Alexander Hamilton on August 4, 1790, birthing the Revenue Cutter Service, the precursor to today’s Coast Guard. And what a voyage it has been since then! The 20th century ushered in a blend of heroism and adaptability as the Revenue Cutter Service united with the Life-Saving Service in 1915. This was no ordinary marriage; it was the fusion of a daring lifesaver and a stern law enforcer, creating the modern-day Coast Guard we revere. The roaring twenties brought along the era of Prohibition, setting the stage for a high-seas drama where our brave Coast Guardsmen chased down rum-runners, showcasing a blend of courage and maritime mastery. Now, fast forward to World War II. The spotlight was on the USCG as they bravely navigated the war-torn waters. The heart-thumping duel between the USCG Cutter Spencer and a German U-boat in 1943 was not just a battle; it was a testament to the indomitable spirit of the

Coast Guard. The Normandy landings further spotlighted the USCG’s pivotal role amidst the chaos of war.

The voyage didn’t stop there. The post-war era saw the Coast Guard expanding its horizons, merging with the Lighthouse Service and later

The USCG’s tale is more than a history; it’s a legacy that sails Beyond the Horizon. With each breaking wave, each daring rescue, and each enforcement of maritime laws, the Coast Guard etches a narrative of valor, echoing through the annals of time.

"THE COAST GUARD STANDS AS A BEACON OF HONOR." the Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat Inspection, crafting a maritime guardian with a broader gaze and a sharper edge. When the Cuban Missile Crisis sent shivers down the spine of the free world, the USCG stood tall, enforcing a naval blockade that was as unyielding as their resolve.

As we sailed into the new millennium, the dark shadows of 9/11 beckoned a new era of port security, embedding the USCG within the Department of Homeland Security. And who could forget their valiant response during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill? It was the Coast Guard leading the helm, facing the murky abyss with a heart full of courage.

As we stand on the cusp of new global challenges, the legacy of the USCG serves as a robust compass for a new cadre of guardians. They sail forward, the illustrious history of the Coast Guard their guiding star, ready to honor the noble tradition of safeguarding America’s waters and citizens. Through calm and storm, the USCG stands as a beacon of honor, respect, and devotion to duty, engraving a legacy that’s as boundless as the seas they traverse.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING CELLPHONES: A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR A DIGITAL WORLD

24

In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, cellphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. They connect us with the world, serve as indispensable tools for work and play, and facilitate countless aspects of modern living. However, as new models flood the market and older devices become obsolete, the question of what to do with our old cellphones arises. This is where recycling steps in as a crucial component of sustainable living.

Resource Conservation

The Growing E-Waste Crisis

Producing a new cellphone requires a significant amount of energy, from mining and refining raw materials to manufacturing and transportation. Recycling, on the other hand, consumes considerably less energy. Reusing materials from old devices reduces the need for energy-intensive extraction and production processes.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is one of the fastest-growing waste streams worldwide. The United Nations estimates that around 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste was generated globally in 2019, a figure expected to reach 74.7 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends continue. Cellphones contribute significantly to this mounting problem, with millions of them being discarded every year. Environmental Impact When cellphones end up in landfills, they pose serious environmental risks. Many electronic devices contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can contaminate soil and water, posing a threat to both the environment and human health. In addition, the energy-intensive manufacturing process of cellphones contributes to carbon emissions and resource depletion.

The Benefits of Cellphone Recycling Recycling cellphones offers a host of benefits, both for the environment and society as a whole.

Cellphones are rich in valuable resources, including gold, silver, copper, and rare earth metals. By recycling these devices, we can recover and reuse these materials, reducing the demand for raw resources and minimizing the environmental impact of mining. Energy Savings

1. Erase Personal Data: Before recycling, ensure that all personal data is completely wiped from your device. 2. Remove the SIM Card and Memory Card: These can be used in future devices or recycled separately. 3. Find a Certified E-Waste Recycler: Look for certified recycling facilities in your area. Many manufacturers and retailers have take-back programs to make the process easy. 4. Consider Donating or Selling: If your phone is still functional, consider donating it to a charitable organization or selling it to a refurbisher. 5. Support E-Waste Legislation: Advocate for policies that promote responsible recycling practices and discourage illegal e-waste dumping.

Reduction of Emissions Conclusion By diverting cellphones from landfills, we decrease the release of harmful substances and greenhouse gases associated with e-waste decomposition. This contributes to the mitigation of climate change and reduces air and water pollution. Job Creation and Economic Opportunities The recycling industry creates jobs and economic opportunities, both in the collection and processing of e-waste and in the production of recycled materials. This contributes to local economies and fosters sustainable development.

Recycling cellphones is a small yet impactful step towards a more sustainable future. By reducing e-waste, conserving resources, and minimizing environmental harm, we can contribute to a healthier planet for current and future generations. Embracing responsible e-waste management is not just an environmental duty, but a collective responsibility we all share in this digital age.

How to Recycle Your Cellphone Recycling your cellphone is a straightforward process that can have a significant positive impact. Here are some steps you can take:

WE’RE ON A ROLL IN 2023 IN THE 118TH CONGRESS. VAREP AS A CONGRESSIONALLY CHARTERED VSO BEING PASSED INTO LAW IS WITHIN REACH. THE VALID ACT 2023 BEING PASSED INTO LAW IS WITHIN OUR REACH.

The National Legislative Committee (NLC) put together the most impressive Policy Conference in VAREP history. On June 26th and 27th, a team of 42 Government Affairs Directors (GADs) completed over 358 appointments with members of both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Our mission was to make personal contact with key members of Congress whom VAREP believes would be advocates of our legislative agenda for the 118th Congress. That mission was a resounding success. VAREP AS A CONGRESSIONALLY CHARTERED VSO

The VAREP VSO Bill (HR 3240) – Progress Report The actual Bill title is: H.R.3240 - To amend title 36, United States Code, to grant a Federal charter to the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals.

Michelle Steel’s office to agree to sign on to the bill as a co-introducing member of the House.

It is important that I give enormous recognition to Glenn Perez, Orange County Chapter, who ushered in the cooperation The National Legislative Committee Team of POC’s with Rep. Steel. When Lynn and I met with Rep. successfully worked with Rep. Susie Lee (D-NV) and Steel during our February trip, Rep. Steel told us Rep Michelle Steel (R-CA) that she listens to the to introduce the VAREP guidance she receives from VSO Bill HR 3240 to the Glenn during her veteran House of Representatives on May 11th, 2023. We also council meetings. In fact, Rep. Steel said, “If Glenn have a third introducing tells me a bill is a good bill representative, Rep. for veterans, I’m going to David Trone (D-MD). endorse and/or co-sponsor Lynn Jabs was very engaged that piece of legislation. I with Rep. Susie Lee’s office trust Glenn that much.” fellow, Sara Harper, as The bill has been sent to the they worked through the House Judiciary Committee. maze of politics to gain In the House, the NLC the cooperation of Rep. 31

mission is to get the bill moved to mark-up and then through to a vote in the Judiciary Committee. Once we have that accomplished, we’ll press the same agenda in the Senate. During our DC Policy Conference we successfully gained cooperation from Senator Ben Cardin to lead and write the Senate Companion to the VSO Bill. Senator Cardin’s office expects to have the Senate Companion Bill introduced with a bipartisan contingent of Senators within the month of August 2023. VA Loan Informed Disclosure act of 2023 also referred to as the VALID Act of 2023. INFORMED CONSUMER CONSENT DISCLOSURE. H.R.4335 - TO AMEND THE NATIONAL HOUSING ACT TO INCLUDE INFORMATION REGARDING VA HOME LOANS IN THE INFORMED CONSUMER CHOICE DISCLOSURE REQUIRED TO BE PROVIDED TO PROSPECTIVE FHA BORROWERS.

32

On June 23rd, 2023, the VALID Act 2023 was re-introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Derik Kilmer, Bergman, Hageman and Pettersen. This was a bipartisan introduction with two Ds and two Rs. This means that VAREP now has two bills on the floor of the House of Representatives. The VALID Act 2023, of course, adds a third column of disclosure for loan applicants who are eligible for a VA Home Loan. Current law only provides two columns of disclosure differences, one for an FHA loan and the other for a conventional loan. And… again, while we were in DC for the Policy Conference, when we met with Senator Ben Cardin’s staff, they also committed to being the lead Senator to introduce the VALID Act 2023 in the Senate. The Senate Companion bill will also have a contingent of bipartisan co-leads. GETTING LEGISLATION PASSED TAKES A VILLAGE

Over the past many weeks, the NLC GAD teams and Presidents of Chapters have held ZOOM training meetings to inspire and educate the NLC team about the two primary pieces of legislation we’re advocating for in the 118th Congress. The NLC GAD team did a tremendous job while on Capitol Hill. With just under 90 boots on the ground the NLC GAD team connected with nearly 400 of the 535 members of Congress, in efforts to promote and garner co-sponsors to our two pieces of legislation. By the beginning of August 2023, VAREP will have four bills in Congress, two in the House of Representatives and two in the U.S. Senate. STAY TUNED AND WE’LL BE BACK WITH MORE THE NEXT TIME Stay Safe! Stay Healthy! And… #IAmVAREP G-II Varrato II VAREP National Legislative Committee Chair
