CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Jan Albus with Variety Child Josie Friends of Variety, 2012 has been the year of yes for Variety. YES, we can reach new goals for fundraising. YES, we had 128 kids at Variety Adventure Camp. YES, we sold out all the performances of Annie. YES, we can make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Variety is the go-to charity for families and children with disabilities. Variety also has restructured its focus into four categories: education, recreation, therapy and equipment. These areas define our services and our mission. Services provided by the Emerson Resource Center as well as Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theater and the annual Champions for Children Summit are major parts of the Education focus. Recreation encompasses Adventure Camp and our summer Outings. Therapy covers physical, occupational, speech, aqua and equine programs. Variety’s Equipment category covers practical (and expensive) needs of kids and their families such as walkers, wheelchairs, standers and braces. We are thankful for our many volunteers—from camp volunteers to those who assist with bicycle building and distribution—who give countless hours and generous support to fulfill Variety’s mission. Many thanks for saying YES when we ask. If you have any doubt about the intensity and commitment
of this organization, just read through the enclosed annual report. Behind these pages stand the lives of Variety’s caring, professional staff. Each of our staff and board members bears the responsibility of saying YES. Variety raised over $4.6 million this year to help 14,500 children and their families. We purchased 383 pieces of equipment, we helped 37 kids get needed therapy, our camp was extended to four weeks and much, much more. These accomplishments are possible because YOU say YES when we ask for help. Your YES is a gift to all these children and their families.
Jan Albus Chief Executive Officer
MISSION Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis is a multi-faceted organization with one simple mission: To help local children with disabilities reach their full potential by providing services every time they need assistance. Variety annually impacts more than 14,500 children across 30 counties, spanning 547 zip codes. 1
From our
BOARD PRESIDENT
David Steward with Variety Child Kaci Dear Variety Friends, Variety broke records this year, thanks to all of you. You gave a child a voice, to sing or to shout; you gave a child a bike to ride like the wind; you gave a parent the joy of watching their child perform; and you gave the hope of a future to many children and their families. Having a child with disabilities changes everything, from how your family can travel, to how your day is scheduled. Mobility is a gift for these families, not something taken for granted. Being independent is a source of freedom for the entire family. A simple trip to the grocery store with a wheelchair bound child for a loaf of bread can be a herculean task. Variety has been here for more than 80 years – every single time that a family needs help. When the wheelchair is out grown, or worn out. When the newest invention could help your child stand, but your insurance won’t consider it, Variety is there. When your child wants to experience camp and play in the water, Variety is there. When your child wants to sing with a voice loud and clear, Variety is there. I have served as President for four of the best years of my life; I remain as Chairman Emeritus because the kids are still my passion and I know the work is not complete. Thank you all for your gifts of time, talents and money; you are a gift not only to the Variety kids‌you are a gift to me, as well. God Bless,
David Steward Variety President 2

andrew says yes to a future As children with disabilities move closer to adulthood, the future may seem uncertain and next steps may be unclear. Variety provides educational opportunities to ensure their success as they move on – showing them that yes their future is bright. Such is the case for Andrew, an 18 year old with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Not only has Andrew’s family received a power wheelchair and van lift through Variety, but he has also participated in the Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theatre. As Andrew’s high school graduation approaches, his parents knew that it was time to explore his options. So Andrew and his mother, Jane, attended the Variety Champions for Children Summit in November– taking part in the “Transitioning into Adulthood” session. According to Andrew’s father, Phillip, “The summit was very helpful. It gave my wife and son plenty of information about what Andrew needs to be doing to prepare for his future.” Variety has provided Andrew with the education his family needs to plan his next steps. This plan currently includes attending St. Louis Community College through the A+ program in the fall where he will pursue his dreams of becoming an architect – a passion he has developed by helping to design sets for Variety Children’s Theatre. Yes he can follow his dreams and attain accomplishment. Andrew’s late brother Paul also participated in Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theatre – delighting audiences with his beautiful voice and boisterous personality. Paul,

diagnosed with Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, lost his battle with the progressive disease at the age of 19, but his memory will live on through the Paul Marler and Graham Vogler Fund. The fund provides valuable financial support to be used to enrich the lives of Variety children who participate in the Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theatre. “I really don’t know what we’d do without Variety,” said Phillip. “The plays and chorus have provided both of my sons with involvement and social interaction that we think has been so helpful.” To this family, Variety is not only a resource for information and an outlet for creativity but also a guide to a bright future of yes.

TORI’S SMILE SAYS YES From the very beginning of her life – Tori has been a fighter. At fifteen months old she experienced multiple seizures, resulting in a stroke on her left side and the inability to use her left arm or leg. But don’t expect this to stop Tori from living life to the fullest. As a ten year old with Autism and developmental delays, Tori works to improve and participate in the activities that she loves daily. Through Variety, Tori has received a therapeutic bike which allows her to achieve a greater level of independence and she enjoys attending Variety Adventure Camp. Tori understands the power of yes in her life and this fortitude is most accurately represented by her experience with occupational therapy, through which she has gained the ability to completely “After we noticed slight open and close her left hand. “After we noticed slight movement in Tori’s left hand we started her on occupational therapy through Variety’s Ther-Happy program,” said Peggy, Tori’s mother. “She has impressed both our family and the staff with her progress.” Variety’s Ther-Happy program has ensured that Tori not only has the medical equipment she needs, but the therapy to support her.

~Peggy, mother of Tori
“Because of Variety’s Ther-Happy program, we are able to continue her therapy without the added financial stress and burden of paying those weekly bills,” said Peggy. Tori has fought to gain each of her skills – a feat only possible through her strength coupled with Variety’s helping hand. For Tori, Variety is an outlet for her relentless drive, allowing her to say yes to life and exceed all expectations.

Filling in the Gap Ther-Happy Kids is Variety’s newest program. Ther-Happy, created with the help of founding partner, Express Scripts, has been made to fill a gap in the needs of children with disabilities, as they require comprehensive care to optimize their independence and achieve maximum potential. Ther-Happy ensures that children with physical disabilities not only have essential medical equipment, but also the therapy to fit their needs. While physicians provide medication and treatment plans, Variety has previously chosen to provide medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, standers, gait trainers, braces, etc. The missing link has been therapy! Therapy is critical to a child’s care. Therapy provides children with strength and endurance exercises to utilize their medical equipment as well as the ability to perform everyday tasks that you or I might take for granted—like tying your shoe. There are many reasons why a child with a physical disability

may not receive therapy, including: • The limited number of therapy visits allowed by some insurance plans per year • Insurance may not cover consecutive days of therapy or intensive therapy programs • Insurance plans may be limited by employers due to financial strain • Children that show slow progress may get denied • The child may be uninsured • Co-pays and deductibles can add up quickly for families especially for a child with a complicated medical history However, Ther-Happy is here to help families overcome these barriers! Variety will pay the co-pay or the entire bill if insurance money runs out or doesn’t exist. Ther-Happy will cover physical, occupational, speech, aqua and equine therapy. We require a doctor’s prescription for therapy, as well as a letter of medical necessity from the therapist. For more information, contact Diane Gruszka at (314) 720-7708. 7
Communication is key. But what if you couldn’t communicate with those around you? What if you couldn’t answer a question with a simple “yes” or “no”? The frustration would be unimaginable, but Autumn hasn’t let that keep her from reaching her full breadth of capabilities. As a lively five-year-old with Myotonic Dystrophy, Autumn is almost entirely non-verbal. However, after her adoption by foster parents, Mike and Lori, Autumn has been introduced to Variety Adventure Camp. Autumn loves camp so much that her mother says she can often be found singing into a microphone at home or moving her arms in the swimming motion – eager to join her fellow campers in the pool! However, Autumn’s greatest opportunity came when she was selected as one of 18 Adventure Camp attendees to participate in a research program through the University of Missouri-St. Louis during which she utilized the iPad application known as Proloquo2go. As a result of the research project Autumn received her very own Proloquo2go application – allowing her to make visual selections to tell her parents what she needs or wants. Now, yes she can communicate and yes, she is understood. “Autumn’s Proloquo2go application from Variety has allowed her to finally convey her needs to us,” said Lori. “Ultimately, she is understood and this has put both her and our family at ease.” To Autumn, her Variety equipment means confidence, comfort and of course, understanding. For Autumn, understanding is key – allowing her to say yes to the activities that she loves. “Without Variety and the equipment they provide, I could never support Autumn and her needs,” said Lori. “They have given us both financial and emotional support.”

SKYE GOT A YES FOR CAMP
Like many Variety children, Skye loves the company of others and thrives off of group activities and the opportunity to socialize. The amiable 15-year-old has attended his fair share of camps in order to find his place among his peers. However, due to the seemingly narrow focus and inflexible schedules of other camps, his need for care for both his Autism and hearing impairment has gone unmet in the past. It seemed as if group activities would never be possible for him as he lost interest after hours of swimming or became confused during complicated games. However, Variety Adventure Camp has shown him that yes he can join in the fun, yes, he is an individual and yes, he will be treated uniquely. “Variety camp counselors’ willingness to wait for Skye to figure things out truly motivates him to try,” said his mother, Lauren. “I appreciate their understanding of the limits and needs of each individual child and we believe that is why he is always so excited for camp.”
“Variety camp counselors’ willingness to wait for Skye to figure things out truly motivates him to try,” said his mother, Lauren. “I appreciate their understanding of the limits and needs of each individual child and we believe that is why he is always so excited for camp.”
Skye improves physically, socially and cognitively at camp and becomes more confident each year. He often strives to impress the camp counselors and as he becomes more independent he even tries to help the other children who are in wheelchairs or need help getting around. “Variety addresses the child as a whole,” said Lauren. “Skye is not defined by his Autism or his hearing impairment at Variety camp – he is accepted and this motivates him.” For Skye, Variety’s adaptive and unique approach to recreation means acceptance. Instead of being categorized he is individualized – ultimately showing him that yes, camp is a possibility for him.

DID YOU KNOW? The John Harris Society is named in honor of John Harris, the first president of what was then known as “The Variety Club.” It was the 1920s when a baby named Catherine was left on the doorstep of the Harris’ Sheridan Theater with a note from her mother begging the generous club to take her in. Without hesitation, The Variety Club adopted Catherine and began to organize chapters throughout the United States, expanding the new mission of welcoming children to the “Variety Family” each year.

Named Endowments Marilyn Fox goes to camp each summer, specifically Variety’s Adventure Camp. Every kid deserves to experience camp and Marilyn has made it her personal legacy to ensure that Adventure Camp is here for the next generation. To recognize Marilyn’s passion, the Fox Family Foundation established Variety’s first named endowment to fund Adventure Camp. Their gift of one million dollars will ensure her belief that every child regardless of ability can go to camp.
