MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear Friends of Variety, Jesus said in the Bible, “What you have done for the least of them, you have done for me.” The verse resonates greatly with me, because I know our extraordinary community is filled with that type of generosity. Through my work with Variety, I have learned what the power of giving really means. I have seen proof of another Bible verse, which notes that if you sow your seeds in good soil, there is always return on those efforts. I am so thankful for all of the community members and corporate sponsors who have joined me in supporting Variety, lending time, effort, money and resources to this great cause. It has changed people’s lives, including mine. Eighty years ago, Variety founders had a mission: To help children who needed a little extra care. What started with an abandoned baby in a Pittsburgh theater has turned into a worldwide effort to assist children everywhere. Photo courtesy of Peter Wochniak Continuing that effort is a blessing to all of us, and it has David Steward with Variety Child Monae been a privilege to watch Variety grow in a number of ways over the past three years. Additional corporate partners have come on board, some at the highest level of sponsorship. New major donors have sent gifts and attended events, which themselves have become bigger and better each year. The staff has grown, and even gained a new perspective – literally – as they expanded into a larger office space on the third floor of the Westport Bank of America building. I’m thankful that my family has joined me in rallying around this cause, as my wife, Thelma, serves on the Variety Board of Directors and as honorary chairman of the Runway Lights Fashion Show. My son David II, his wife Mary and my daughter Kimberly are now active servants. How time flies! My tenure as Variety president is nearly up, but the faces of these children and their parents will live with me forever. I have seen first hand the results of Variety’s work, and it has been such a pleasure to play some small part. It has been an honor to serve as president of this great organization, and I look forward to maintaining a seat on the board after I step down at the end of this year. I can honestly say it has been the most gratifying experience of my career. In His Service, David Steward 6
MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO Dear Friends of Variety, What a wonderful tribute to 80 years of Variety in St. Louis! We’re all experiencing history right now, and I am so humbled to be a part of it. Through depression, recession, good times and bad, all of you, and so many before you, have stepped up to the charge to help Variety care for children with disabilities right here in St. Louis. One key to Variety’s longevity is the acknowledgement that in order to grow, we must embrace change. It’s not an easy thing to do, as it comes with a great deal of risk, but we at Variety have been able take those risks and become even stronger for our kids. For instance, it was hard to say goodbye to the trusty Telethon, but we’ve said hello to Variety Week, putting together an entire week of fundraising events and promotions, including a Call-A-Thon. Photo courtesy of Peter Wochniak I’ve seen many programs come and go during my time Jan Albus with Variety Children at Variety, and I am incredibly honored to be playing Grant, Monae, Mia and J.J. a part in that growth. Bikes for Kids, the Dennis and Judith Jones Variety Wonderland Playground in Forest Park, the Emerson Resource Center, Variety Adventure Camp, Variety Children’s Theatre, and the new Ther-Happy Kids therapy program have all helped expand the ways we reach our kids, ensuring that Variety is the go-to charity for local kids with disabilities.
Thank you for taking this journey with us, as we witness lives change right before our eyes because of contributions from people like you. This truly is a historic night. Let’s make it the beginning of the next eight decades of helping children reach their full potential. Sincerely, Jan Albus

DINNER CHAIRMAN Marilyn Fox
Celebrating 15 YEARS Marilyn Fox is truly a champion for Variety children. A long-time St. Louis philanthropist with a strong sense of community, Marilyn was named Variety’s Woman of the Year in 1996. In the past 16 years, she has worn many hats for Variety, as she quickly became one of the organization’s most passionate spokespersons, even from across the ocean for two years when her husband, Sam, was serving as the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. Fifteen years ago, Marilyn became the chairman of the annual Dinner With the Stars gala, Variety’s largest fundraiser. In the same year, she created the Patron Committee for the gala, comprised of Variety friends enlisted to invite new friends to the event. Each year it has grown, raising more than $7 million for Variety’s kids. As a member of the Variety Board of Directors, Marilyn has served on both the Nominating Committee and Executive Committee. Along with those governance duties, it is widely known that Marilyn put the “adventure” in what is today’s Variety Adventure Camp. In 1998, she Photo courtesy of Peter Wochniak was introduced to what was then a one-week sports camp Marilyn Fox with Variety Child Grant with limited activities. Today, Variety Adventure Camp is a four-week camp, with a staff numbering 85 and activities including art and music, as well as a full range of sports. Marilyn was instrumental in developing the new model for the camp, and single-handedly found generous supporters to fund it. Marilyn firmly believes that children wtih disabilities deserve to have an adventure each year at camp. “Marilyn is one of Variety’s greatest leaders,” said CEO Jan Albus. “We’re so blessed to have her as an integral part of Variety, heavily involved in both our fundraising and programming efforts. Her support is visible each day in the lives of thousands of Variety kids.”

HONOREE Thelma Steward ~ Woman of the Year “If Dave and I are going to sit on a board, we’re going to do something to improve that board and to impact the organization in some way,” Thelma Steward said. She has proved that in her involvement with Variety, as well as in her many endeavors throughout the community. As a registered nurse by profession and a homemaker for nearly 30 years, Thelma’s commitment to caring has been complemented with a focus on numerous activities that enhance our community. Her past activities have included: Co-chairperson for the Charmaine Chapman Society of the United Way, co-chairperson for Grace Hill’s Annual fundraiser, board member for Girls, Inc. and Saint Louis Art Museum Friends, chairperson for Family Ministries and co-chairperson for Stewardship Enrichment at her church, and Sunday school teacher for “Doing Business by the Good Book” class. Thelma is currently serving her second term on the Variety Board of Directors. In addition to her work on the board, she has served as honorary chairperson for Variety’s Runway Lights Fashion Show for three consecutive years, helping take the event to a new level each year. Her husband, David Steward, is Variety’s president, and her Photo courtesy of Peter Wochniak children have all been involved with Variety events. “I don’t Thelma Steward with Variety Child Mia have to receive anything to make me want to do this,” Thelma said. “The joy I see on the faces of the children and parents is just such a great reward right there. Variety families show such courage and such love. All we’re doing is trying to make a better life for where they are, and I’m so happy to do that!” Thelma is also a Lifetime United Way Alexis De Tocqueville member, and she currently serves on the board of the Sheldon Concert Hall, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Symphony, and Care and Counseling. She and Dave co-chaired the Heart Ball, and are co-chairing the Saint Louis Symphony Gala in October. She has received numerous awards, including the Humanitarian Award from the Dr. Martin Luther King Awards Celebration, the Pillar of Strength Award from Epworth, Washington University’s Jane and Whitney Harris St. Louis Community Service Award, the St. Louis Community Empowerment Foundation’s Salute to Women in Leadership Award, and the Cancer Support Community’s Marsha Wolff and Tina Borchert Inspiration Award. She and Dave have been married for 35 years, and she continues to make it a priority to support him and his numerous board commitments in the St. Louis community and beyond. 12
HONOREE Michael Neidorff ~ Man of the Year “We enjoy helping organizations that deal with youth and health-related issues,” Michael Neidorff said. “We think it is important to find organizations that pull us together versus isolate us.” Michael knows Variety is such an organization, and has personally and professionally become invested in the effort to help Variety children reach their full potential. One of the first volunteer efforts he and his wife Noémi joined after moving to town in the mid-1980s was to answer phones on the Variety Telethon. He has also helped establish Centene as a top corporate partner, as well as an underwriting partner for tonight’s event, ensuring that every dollar will go directly to Variety. Besides his commitment to Variety, Michael serves on the boards of several arts and civic organizations, including the National Urban League, The Kennedy Center, the Saint Louis Symphony, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the United Way and the Greater St. Louis Boy Scouts of America. Dedicated to education, Michael served on the board of trustees for Webster University. His contribution to several civic organizations, such as the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, Grand Center and Civic Progress, is notable. In March 2006, he joined to the board of directors of Brown Shoe Company, Inc.

Professionally, Michael is an experienced executive with a record of accomplishments in both starting and managing healthcare enterprises. He accepted the positions of president and chief executive officer of Centene Corporation in 1996. He was named the chairman and chief executive officer in May 2004. From the time that Michael joined Centene, he has led its transformation from a closely held, $40 million corporation to a publicly traded, Fortune 500, multi-line enterprise with annual revenues approaching $5 billion. “Michael is a natural fit for this award, which honors local philanthropists who really make a difference,” said Variety President David Steward. “His warm heart and compassionate soul are a true blessing for this community, as he strengthens every cause he touches.”

JOHN HARRIS SOCIETY The John Harris Society consists of hundreds of caring individuals, foundations and organizations dedicated to annually supporting the children in our community who live with physical or mental disabilities like spina bifida, cerebral palsy or autism. By joining the John Harris Society, you personally help children who have endured countless hardships realize their true potential and reach goals many never thought possible. With an annual gift of $1,000 or more to Variety, YOU CAN make an immediate difference in the life of a child with a disability. In the late 1920s, John Harris resided as president of a social group of entertainers who called themselves “The Variety Club.” One cold December evening, the men found a baby girl abandoned on the steps of Harris’ theater in Pittsburgh. The men decided to take the baby in and care for her, and Harris, along with his fellow entertainers, launched Variety chapters throughout the United States to help children in need. Questions? You can do something today to ensure that St. Louis children with disabilities can always turn to Variety for help. Please consider joining Variety’s Encore Society, created to honor and recognize those who want to provide for local children by denoting a gift to Variety in their will, trust or estate plan. The process is simple, beginning with a conversation with your attorney regarding your wish. All Encore Society members receive a certificate of appreciation and are recognized in our Annual Report (unless you prefer to remain anonymous). If you have already arranged for a bequest or other planned gift, we ask that you notify us so we can honor your support. VARIETY CLUB PARTNER
Centene Corporation has a propensity for things that involve youth and health related issues. Variety deals with both. When one sees the parents and foster parents and the children they are helping and supporting, it is impossible to not think about helping in a material way. We hope in some small way some of the things we have done might serve as a role model for others to help Variety. Centene has supported Variety for several years, but the company reached the major partner level in 2010 and the “Variety Club” level this year. Prior to that, Centene was the presenting sponsor of Variety’s Champions for Children Summit in 2007 and 2008. That event includes an educational forum and allocations luncheon, providing education, allocation and celebration for Variety’s partner agency programs. Centene also contributed to the Variety Children’s Chorus’ trip to Washington, D.C., in 2008, to perform at the White House for then First Lady Laura Bush’s Holiday Open House.

He has been an active supporter of Variety chapters both in St. Louis, where he has appeared in 20 Telethon specials, and in Vancouver, B.C., where he currently resides. Faced with his own challenges after the loss of his legs in a highway accident, Jim encompasses the “I CAN!” spirit of Variety. Shruthi ~ Variety Child When Cathy and Bob adopted Shruthi from India a couple of years ago, she was 4 years old, weighed 17 pounds and because of dislocation, her legs bent backward. One orthopedic surgeon said he had never seen such profound limb deformities. But this young girl is not letting Larsen Syndrome get her down. The congenital disorder has caused deformities in her feet, ankles, legs and hands, as well as dislocated hips and elbows, and curvature of her spine, but Shruthi’s attitude is always positive. Nine surgeries later, and with Variety’s help, Shruthi has moved from a wheelchair to a gait trainer and now to forearm crutches. She is full of energy and happily enjoying her newfound freedom. Her surgeries have helped the deformities, but it’s the equipment provided by Variety that is giving Shruthi the opportunity to be as mobile as medically possible. The equipment allows her to enjoy being a kid, supplying the additional mobility that her body doesn’t provide. 37
