Touhill Performing Arts Center Samuel French, Inc. | A musical based on the play by James M. Barrie Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Be y Comden and Adolph Green | Music by Mark Charlap and Jule Styne

WELCOME TO NEVERLAND! Each year Variety Children’s Theatre presents the top children’s musical theater classics for you here at the Touhill; Tom Sawyer (2009), OLIVER! (2010), Wizard of Oz (2011), and Annie (2012). Each embodies a message of hope, bravery, and perseverance with great attention to acceptance, diversity and compassion. This year’s production reaches the height of what we hope will resonate with everyone onstage and in the audience with a powerful message. In 1902, author James Barrie wrote a book called The Little White Bird which introduced the character of Peter as a baby who later became Peter Pan in a play premiering in 1904 called The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. Little did he know that his story once told to a young family of boys would one day become a silent movie in the 1920’s, a Broadway hit, a Disney animated film, and the basis for the Steven Spielberg movie Hook. Even the recent Broadway smash hit Peter and the Star Catcher is a story author Ridley Pearson once told to his daughter after she asked the question, “Why does Peter Pan fly”?
VARIETY CHILDREN’S THEATRE PRESENTS
Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden and Adolph Green Music by Mark Charlap and Jule Styne A musical based on the play by James M. Barrie
Starring
Jan Albus with Variety interns Danielle and Mallory
The children in our show are a magical composition of St. Louis’ young starlet actors and St. Louis’ most talented Variety kids. Together along with the greatest of professional actors from our community they reveal the elements of childhood that are universal to all. Who hasn’t experienced bullies like Captain Hook, compassionate, but unlikely friends like the heroic Indians, and siblings like the Darling children? Director Lara Teeter has created yet another avenue for enjoying a classic story that has proven its worth and aged very well. His incorporation of The Big Muddy Dance Company performers and the children with disabilities is the newest and possibly the greatest addition to this special show. Variety kids can easily relate to the Lost Boys in the story who find a place of acceptance in Neverland regardless of their challenges. Lost Boys have a hero in Peter Pan. Variety kids have a hero in each and every one of you who have attended tonight for their show. Thank You! All the best!

STARLIGHT SPONSOR (FOUNDING) Ken & Nancy Kranzberg Ken and Nancy Kranzberg have worked tirelessly on behalf of arts education and to provide accessibility to the arts for everyone in St. Louis – including Variety’s children with disabilities. In 2009, when Variety Children’s Theatre was just an idea proposed by Variety CEO Jan Albus, Ken and Nancy rallied behind it with a generous donation that funded the first show – The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
STARLIGHT SPONSOR David & Thelma Steward David and Thelma Steward are among our community’s most devoted ambassadors for special children, always recognizing and responding immediately to their needs, big or small. Inspired by what they have seen each year on the stage of Variety Children’s Theatre, the Stewards did not hesitate to support this program, understanding its crucial role in helping Variety children realize their dreams, while also educating the entire audience to see well beyond a person’s disabilities.
According to Nancy, “As the original funders of Variety Children’s Theatre, we naturally have a special place in our hearts for the first production, but it has been the biggest thrill to see the quality in each production reach new heights each year – constantly remaining above par.”
“We’ve been inspired each year as we’ve watched the children perform onstage. Thelma and I are blessed to join in and support this vital program that makes such a difference in so many lives.”
Now in it’s fifth year VCT is annually funded by the Kranzberg’s. Nancy says, “We have continued to support Variety Children’s Theatre because we think it is important not only for children with disabilities to have a way to express themselves, but for children without disabilities to learn acceptance and gain the ability to work with a diverse cast of people.”
David, a former Variety Man of the Year, served four years as president of the Variety Board of Directors before being named Chairman Emeritus. Thelma is serving her third term on the board and is gearing up for her sixth year as Honorary Chairman of the Runway Lights Fashion Show. She was previously chairman of the Variety Children’s Chorus and last year was honored at the Dinner With the Stars as Variety’s Woman of the Year.
Given their knowledge of the local arts community, Ken and Nancy recognize the unique collaborative effort required to make Variety Children’s Theatre a success, incorporating resources from nearly every musical theatre entity in St. Louis.
Together, David and Thelma have provided the leadership and support to lift Variety to new heights, as the organization has raised more than $33 million to help local children with disabilities since their first year of involvement in 2000. Photos by ProPhoto STL

STARLIGHT SPONSOR Greg & Lisa Boyce Greg and Lisa Boyce embrace every opportunity to help local children, as well as the St. Louis arts community, making Variety Children’s Theatre a perfect fit for their generous philanthropic endeavors. The Boyces are especially drawn to activities that are inclusive, joining people with and without disabilities to accomplish a common goal. "Variety Children’s Theatre builds community spirit for all involved - the Variety kids on stage and behind the scenes, the production staff, the Equity actors, parents, audiences and countless volunteers. The program is receiving national and international attention and accolades," says Lisa. Greg and Lisa have a personal investment, as well, in VCT as their child Steph, who has a passion for musical theatre, was a cast member in The Wizard of Oz as well as Annie. And although they have enjoyed each production, the Boyces have a continued fondness of Wizard of Oz. According to Lisa, “It was a very special moment when Variety Child Gracie ‘flew’ in the finale of Wizard of Oz. It surely exhibited the best of the I CAN attitude Variety kids exhibit everyday.”
STARLIGHT SPONSOR Terry & Sally Schnuck Terry and Sally Schnuck are first time supporters of Variety Children’s Theatre and have graciously come to us as Starlight Sponsors. According to Terry, in addition to seeing a prior Variety Children’s Theatre production with Sally, he has had a connection with Variety for more than twenty years. “ I have been familiar with Variety for many years stretching back to my days when I was general counsel at Schnuck Markets and oversaw some of the charitable giving. I was quite familiar with the Variety Cash for Kids program.” As an accomplished Broadway producer, Terry is sincerely vested in helping to give children of all abilities the opportunity to shine on stage. “We choose to support Variety Children’s Theatre because it gives children with disabilities the same opportunity as any other kid to be involved in a theatrical production, to learn skills and to be a member of a team working toward a common goal. And not many kids get to be involved in a professional production such as these. You can see the joy on their faces as they participate,” says Terry.
Beyond theatre, Greg and Lisa are year-round supporters of Variety events and the “Kids on the Go” mobility program. In 2008 they served as Patron Chairs for Variety’s Dinner with the Stars gala and Greg is currently the Chairman of the Variety Board of Directors. Photos by ProPhoto STL

STARLIGHT SPONSOR Michael & Noémi Neidorff
Noémi and Michael Neidorff are great philanthropists and contributors to the arts in the St. Louis area. Both have been awarded with Variety’s Man and Woman of the year awards, making Variety history as the only couple to win back-to-back years. Noémi is currently a member to Variety’s Board of Directors and the couple has a named endowment for Variety Adventure Camp. Although the Neidorffs support Variety’s many programs, this is the first year that they have participated as a Starlight Sponsor for Variety Children’s Theatre. “We enjoy helping organizations that deal with youth,” Michael said. “We think it is important to find organizations that pull us all together versus isolate us.” Michael knows Variety is such an organization and has personally and professionally become invested in the effort to help Variety children reach their full potential. One of the first volunteer efforts he and Noémi joined after moving to town in the mid-1980s was to answer phones at the Variety telethon. He has also helped establish Centene as a top corporate partner. We couldn’t be more grateful for the Neidorff’s support of Variety Children’s Theatre’s production of Peter Pan and we are so happy to welcome them as Starlight Sponsors.

THE STORY OF PETER PAN The Darling household is a place of joy, consisting of the three children, Wendy, John, and Michael; the practical and sometimes stern father, Mr. Darling; the loving mother, Mrs. Darling; and the children’s nurse, a dog named Nana and Liza, The Maid. Peter Pan sneaks into the children’s bedroom at night to listen to Mrs. Darling’s bedtime stories. One night, Nana and Mrs. Darling see him and try to stop him, but are only able to catch his shadow as he flies out the window. Peter, of course, wants his shadow, and returns with his not-very-polite fairy, Tinker Bell. However, when he finds his shadow, he can’t make it stick to him and wakes Wendy to sew it on. Artwork from Peter Pan Walt Disney - 1953
Peter tells her that he had run away the day he was born because he heard his parents talking about all the things he would do when he was a man, and he went to live with the fairies so that he would never have to grow up.
Wendy sews Peter’s shadow back onto him, and then Peter convinces Wendy and her brothers, by teaching them how to fly, to return to Neverland with him and Tinker Bell. So off they fly, over the rooftops of London to Neverland, where the lost boys share the island with the mean pirates, led by Captain Hook, and with the Picadilly Tribe, led by their chief and princess, Tiger Lily. Joining forces with the Indians to defeat Captain Hook and his pirates, the Darlings experience the adventure of a lifetime and what it means to stay young forever!

WHO'S WHO MEET NICK
Nick, age eight, is a first time Variety Children’s Theatre cast member! According to his mother, Dottie, he has been waiting to tryout for our theatre program since he became a Variety child – counting down the days until he met the age requirement of eight years old. Nick attended VCT auditions for this year’s production, Peter Pan, in May and his natural knack for entertaining earned him a very important role – principal lost boy! To Nick, this is very exciting because he has every intention of becoming a famous actor some day. Since earning this role and according to Nick, crossing his acting debut off of his bucket list, Nick has been telling anyone and everyone about this year’s performance. His mother says that Nick’s teachers, friends and family have all been informed that they MUST attend Peter Pan because it is for a good cause. We are very appreciative of Nick’s enthusiasm and we can’t wait to see his first appearance on the VCT stage when the curtain rises! 20
Larry Mabrey* (Pirate) is honored to be working with Variety this year. Throughout his career, Larry has worked from coast-to-coast on stage, in radio, film, TV and commercials. He directed Boston Marriage, An O. Henry Christmas, Little Bosnia and appeared in The Good Doctor, Love Letters, and Closer Than Ever. Other acting companies: NYC – All Souls Players, MTW, LaMaMa ETC; CHICAGO - Royal George, Lincolnshire; ST. LOUIS - MUNY, Historyonics, STAGES, HotCity, Theatre Factory. Thanks to Erin and Jackson for continued love and support. Rich Pisarkiewicz* (Cecco) has enjoyed working with Variety Children’s Theatre and is very happy to be back. He has also worked with the Black Rep of St. Louis, the Fox Theatre, Shakespeare Festival St..Louis, The Rep, and many productions at Stages, Westport Playhouse, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Summerstage and Theatre Project Company. Doug Landholt (Jukes) an aarrrdent supporter of VCT since its inception, is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing group. He is also a fixture at the Archangel Players, having performed some of his favorite roles -- King Arthur (Camelot), the Beast (Beauty...), the King (The King and I), and Horace Vandergelder (Hello, Dolly), sometimes opposite his lovely wife, Joan. Thanks to Jan, Lara, Marty and everyone for tolerating him.
Shawn Leonard (Pirate) is thrilled to make his debut with Variety and is especially excited to do so along side his daughter, Bella. His last performance goes all the way back to 1990 as John the Baptist/Judas in Godspell. He has also been active behind the scenes with set and lighting support for several local children’s theater programs. Many thanks to Variety for this wonderful opportunity! Gerry Love (Noodler) is enjoying his second Variety production. Aye, ‘tis a long way to fall, from President of the US (Franklin D Roosevelt in Annie) to the third buccaneer from the left. But there is no cause more worthy than supporting the Variety outreach and a 44-gun frigate under full sail couldn’t drag him away. So beware all ye Lost Boys, Dancing Indians, mermaids, sirens, sea beasties, and Pittsburgh Pirates (not real pirates at all). Capt Hook’s men are coming to take your booty, and give it to Variety! Greg Matzker (Pirate) is thrilled to be on stage after spending time directing shows like Plaza Suite and The Secret Garden. Over the years he has been seen with many local and regional groups playing roles in Little Shop of Horrors, Bye Bye Birdie and You’re a Goodman Charlie Brown and Snoopy! EMMA’S DEDICATION
THE PAUL MARLER & GRAHAM VOGLER
A Tribute to Past & Future
Performing Arts Fund
Variety Children’s Theatre is so dynamic and beautiful; it is hard to say that any one person can embody the true meaning behind this inclusive theatre program. Unless, of course, you are talking about Variety child Emma. Emma’s enthusiasm and dedication to Variety’s theatre productions are undoubtedly reminiscent of two Variety Children that hold a special place in our hearts. Both Paul Marler and Graham Vogler contained an unparalleled love for performing arts and an impressive involvement in Variety Children’s Theatre and Variety Children’s Chorus. Although they are no longer with us, the Paul Marler and Grant Vogler fund was created in their memory. The fund provides valuable financial support to be used to enrich the lives of Variety children who participate in the Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theater. Variety Children just like Emma. Emma’s enduring attitude is what has made Emma such an integral part of each and every Variety Children’s Theatre production. "I tried out for Variety Children’s Theatre because I thought that everyone would be understanding of my disabilities but not treat me any differently because of them,” says Emma. And why would they? Emma’s Cerebral Palsy has in no way defined her musical or theatrical talent and has certainly not deterred her from working each and every day to improve and be her best. “I’ve always been interested in theatre and performing arts. I think it’s fun and interesting to play someone else – to tell their story. I’ve been in Variety Children’s Chorus since I was 12 and I have a scholarship from Variety to take voice lessons. I also attend regular dance classes. The other girls in my class have been dancing for years and although I’m still slightly new to it I like to learn from them.”
Emma’s enthusiasm and dedication to Variety’s theatre productions are undoubtedly reminiscent of two Variety Children that hold a special place in our hearts – Paul and Graham.
With a resume as extensive as Emma’s it would be ridiculous to think of anything about her as a disability. In fact, she plans to use her experience growing up with differing abilities as a way to touch people emotionally and raise awareness. According to Emma, “I hope to write and record music about my personal experiences. I hope my story and my music inspires others and raises awareness." We are certainly rooting for Emma with no doubt that she will accomplish her dreams. 28
More About Paul & Graham Growing up Paul honed his vocal talent by joining the Variety Children’s Chorus. Audiences were delighted with his beautiful voice and constant smile. Soon he found a greater challenge and landed a part in the big musical, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer with the newly formed Variety Children’s Theatre. Graham found his own niche on the Production Team in 2009. He served as Assistant to Production Director Lara Teeter for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and in the next year assistant to the Musical Director Greg Schweizer for OLIVER! Both boys constantly donned bigger-than-life smiles, discovering their talents and finding their voices through Variety programs during their time with us.
Graham helps Lara direct a VCT rehearsal
Their memories will live on in the hearts of all who knew them and loved them. Purpose of the Fund The Paul Marler and Graham Vogler Fund will provide valuable financial support to be used to enrich the lives of Variety children who participate in the Variety Children’s Chorus and Variety Children’s Theatre. Both of these programs help children with disabilities achieve their full potential on and off the stage emphasizing what they can do and offering them the opportunity achieve it. How can you help? Contributions to this fund will be used to support the Variety performing arts programs that enrich the lives of children like Paul and Graham. You can be a part of this important endeavor to raise money and to continue this fund. Gifts of any size will be appreciated.
