Annual RepoRT

Since 1932, Variety the Children’s Charity serves children with physical and intellectual disabilities in the St. Louis region, from infancy to age 21. Variety focuses on five core areas to help kids become independent and productive: gifting medical equipment for mobility and independence; developing unique education and recreational programs, funding therapy and providing Sunshine Coach Vans to help transport partner agency kids to places like doctor appointments. Variety partners with 75+ agencies to support programs and give scholarships that directly impact the lives of Variety children. For more information, visit www.varietystl.org.

MISSION Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis is a multi-faceted organization with one simple mission: To help local children with disabilities reach their full potential by providing services every time they need assistance. Greg Boyce with Variety kids Luke and Anthony

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Dear Friends of Variety, It has been an exciting first year serving as Chairman of Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis. I learned intimately about the challenges our Variety families face, and I was inspired by the dedicated individuals who work every day to meet the needs of our families.

PROLAC hearing aid, was made available to help children gain independence.

In 2013, Variety honed their mission to five core areas referred to as TREES: Therapy, Recreation, Education, Equipment and Sunshine Coach Vans. The organization’s focus on these core initiatives was evident throughout the year.

I look forward to all the unique and ambitious opportunities that 2014 will bring for our Variety children, including the Variety Children’s Theatre presentation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Therapy – Variety children progressed toward individual goals through innovative therapy, like Kinesiotaping. Recreation – Confidence was built through rock climbing and karate at Variety Adventure Camp. Education – Thirty Variety children showcased their immense theatrical talents, bringing 6,299 audience members to five separate performances of Peter Pan. Equipment – Cutting-edge equipment, like the

Sunshine Coach Vans – Children were transported safely to doctor visits, educational events and outings.

Thank you all for contributing to Variety’s success in changing lives. It doesn’t take winning the 2013 Gold Heart to know that the St. Louis community has a special place in its heart for Variety kids and families. Here’s to another year of helping our children reach their full potential.

Jan Albus with Variety Child Josie

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear Friends of Variety, In 2013, Variety International awarded St Louis Variety with the highest award, the Gold Heart. At the 86th Annual Variety International World Conference, the 41 chapters from 11 countries met and shared their vision and plans to help children with disabilities. Since forming in 1928, Variety chapters around the world have raised more than $1.8 billion for more than 45 million kids with disabilities. The criteria for the Gold Heart Award include: programs, innovation, financial stability and growth. Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis grew 83% in funding in 2012, including growth of 35% of giving medical equipment and 59% increase in impact in our community. Our high efficiency means that 85 cents of each dollar goes to Variety kids. Our sustainability is strong with a $1.3 million endowment to support Variety Adventure Camp, and a board designated endowment of $2.4 million. The William R. Forman Heart Awards have been given out for 30 years. There are three heart awards, Bronze, Silver and Gold. St Louis Variety has won the Bronze Heart three times (1984-1988-2010) the Silver Heart three times (1987-1990-2008) but the Gold Heart had remained elusive, until 2013! To be recognized as the best Variety chapter means a great deal to us. We honor all the work that the other 41 chapters do for kids with disabilities around the globe. We will continue to strive to be even better and assist more children in our community. The Gold Heart Award also recognizes St Louis’ giving heart; to our donors, volunteers and staff, this is YOUR award. You made a difference in the life of a Variety child.

Jan Albus Chief Executive Officer

- Julie Leah’s Mom

“Mom! I stood up!” peeped two-year-old Leah from the swimming pool. Her mom, Julie, smiled as Leah’s therapist explained that the weights she placed on Leah’s feet were helping her to accomplish this feat.

She has no feeling in her feet or ankles but according to her mother, Leah’s fighting attitude along with help from her walker and therapy have allowed her to progress at an impressive rate. Recently she stood assisted for the first time!

“We fully attribute Leah’s improvements in her self-confidence and mobility to Variety’s Ther-Happy Kids program,” says Julie.

“We’ve tried standing her up before but she totally freaked out because she’s timid and wasn’t used to it,” said Julie. “Although Leah may seem nervous and shy she’s actually energetic and absolutely can’t wait to come to therapy. At night we talk about going to see her therapist in the morning and she gets so excited. She can hardly sit still when we pull into the parking lot.”

Leah’s walker and aqua therapy would not be a possibility without the help from Variety’s Ther-Happy Kids program. Ther-Happy Kids ensures that children with disabilities not only have the medical equipment they need, but the therapy to support them while they use it. Variety picks up the co-pays, or even the full cost, when insurance money runs out. For this reason, Ther-Happy is essential to the growth and development of children like Leah, born with Spina Bifida. 7

“We fully attribute Leah’s improvements in her self-confidence and mobility to Variety’s Ther-Happy program,”

Julie says that Leah is fiercely determined and she expects great things from her - anticipating that continued therapy will help Leah to stand at age four and walk by age six. We believe that if anyone can do it, Leah can and we can’t wait to see her continued progress through Ther-Happy Kids.

“I do not think Kaitlyn and many other Variety children would be as far along in this process if it was not for Variety. Her life experiences because of the programs and events Variety offers have enriched her life and made her more than most people expected. Kaitlyn is living outside the box. That is priceless.” - Dianne, Mom of Kaitlyn

“You are all amazing and helped Drew with equipment we’d never be able to purchase. We love our custom bike!” -The Davis Family Drew is pictured with former Rams player Aeneas Williams

THANK YOU everyone at Variety! You made my little man’s day today. He just received his new walker and we are soooooo VERY excited. What a counted blessing today!! We are thankful!! -Laura, mom of Jonathan

“Josh doesn’t have any older siblings in his life to look up to, so for him to experience that with Kenny means the world to me.” - Mary Ellen, Josh’s Mom

“I sent my son to Variety’s Adventure Camp two summers ago because I wanted him to have fun and be comfortable,” says Mary Ellen, the mother of Variety camper, Josh. Mary Ellen could have never imagined that Josh, age six, would not only find a place that he could fit in, but also find a best friend. And someone to look up to. “Josh is very high energy,” says Mary Ellen. “So there were days I would ask his counselor Kenny ‘are you sure you want to do this?’” But Kenny, a sophomore at Missouri State University, was up for the challenge and quickly became the mentor Josh needed. Josh is constantly laughing and always moving, ready for his next adventure. Kenny is ready to make new friends and always striving to make the most of his camp time with Josh. Clearly the two of them are a complimentary pair. “Josh and I are definitely both sociable and active people so I knew we would be a good match” says Kenny, “Our first summer together I would just reflect on how I could be a better mentor to him each day after camp.” Mary Ellen immediately noticed the benefits of their camper-counselor relationship. “One day, I picked up Josh from camp and Kenny told me he had a ‘proud dad’ moment with Josh when he went down the pool slide by himself for the first time!” says Mary Ellen. “Josh doesn’t have any older siblings in his life to look up to, so for him to experience that with Kenny means the world to me.” After two years and four camp sessions with Josh, Kenny echoed a similar sentiment, stating, “One of the most positive learning experiences that anyone could experience in their life is made possible here, at Variety Adventure Camp.”

“Anthony has such a great attitude and strong spirit but he needed the sense of normalcy that he receives riding a bike around with his sister.”

E

- Laneshia, Anthony’s mom

quipment

Four-year-old Variety child Anthony is paralyzed from the waist down due to a gunshot wound. After the family was initially referred to Variety when Anthony signed up for horseback riding, Anthony’s mother made sure to sign him up to receive a therapeutic bike at Variety’s annual Bikes for Kids in November. “Anthony has such a great attitude and strong spirit but he needed the sense of normalcy that he receives riding a bike around with his sister,” confessed Laneshia. It was clear that Anthony’ sister felt the same way at Bikes for Kids this year. As he made one of his many laps around the gym at Webster University in his brand new bike, his sister ran behind him, exclaiming “Anthony! Now we can ride our bikes together!” This touching moment was the perfect example of why equipment is so important to our Variety kids. According to Laneshia, Anthony is not only building significant muscle strength and experiencing therapeutic benefits while having fun with other kids his age, but his bike has also become a sense of pride and joy. Visitors to their home are greeted with a “Hi! Look at my brand new bike!” “Variety is our guardian angel! I try my hardest to make sure Anthony has a fulfilling childhood and not let his disability get in the way. Variety has helped to enhance it and has provided things that I would not be able to provide on my own. We are forever grateful,” says Laneshia.

It’s not often that a child told she may never walk, finds herself on a stage alongside professional actors in front of thousands of people. However, this has been the case for eight-year-old Variety child Olivia. “She’s been singing and dancing since she was a toddler,” says her father, Kelly. And Olivia chose to follow her passion for performing – eventually landing her on stage in the Variety Children’s Theatre production of ANNIE last year in the “Hard Knock Life” chorus, belting out each note and dancing to the beat. Variety Children’s Theatre, a major endeavor of Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, is a unique production unlike any other in the country that showcases the talents of theatrically gifted children and adults in an inclusive setting, with children of all abilities on stage. This program, now in its 5th season, perfectly embodies Variety’s mission to help children just like Olivia to reach their full potential. “I didn’t get to see many of her practices for the performance last year so I didn’t really know what to expect going into it opening night,” said Kelly. “So it really blew me away when I saw her on the stage. I’ve seen her in multiple performances through our church but her appearance in ANNIE brought tears to my eyes.” Olivia, shy yet undoubtedly well spoken, has improved with each performance – honing her singing abilities and building self-assurance. “I think that acting and singing has been extremely helpful with her self-confidence,” says her father. Olivia seems to agree, claiming that she has even considered continuing to sing and perform into adulthood. Given Olivia’s natural knack for the arts and contagious personality, explained by her father as “all sunshine and butterflies,” it is no surprise that Olivia earned herself her second role in Variety Children’s Theatre this year. Olivia was cast in the 2013 Variety Children’s Theatre production of Peter Pan in October and was once again a real stage stealer!
