VARANASI LIBRARY & MUSEUM Ganga is the only river from India which has gathered itself in so much of meaning and reverence over three millenia in the Indian subcontinent. kashi or varanasi is the most visited piligrimage centre of india with increasing densification of the city from the country. there also exists a urgent need to provide spaces for community building and public engagement. the studio focus for the semester is to design a public building within the city of banaras which holds a strong cultural heritage and importance and site also contributes to a multiple strong context which is challenging as well as interesting to develop on aprogram hich more student oriented. To understand a site/ design brief in terms of opportunities and constraints of natural and man made components and further evolve a design strategy would be preserved and strengthened and constraints either removed if possible minimised by taking appropriate design measures so that the ultimate outcome is a healthy compromise between man and nature Studio guides: Asst Prof Pallavi dhomse Prof. Anand krishnamurthy Prof Manoj ladhad Asst Prof Santhesh kelvekar

Project : program split into library, museum and urban plaza ite location : site close to river Ganga, samne ghat, Varanasi. Site area : 65, 700 sqm Built area : 12,000 sqm Duration : 12 weeks

CONTOURS

Diverting the traffic on the main road into the road on the edge of the site, and converting the existingc main road cutting across the site into a pedestrian path

With the site divided into 3 parts 1. The first part of the site is given to the people of varansi by providing them a neighborhood park and open ground to celebrate festivals. 2. The second part adresses the brief, with urban plaza, libray and museum. 3. The third part is modulated into ghats and productive landscape

VEGETATION

With the vehicular traffic shifted across the site edge. the site is divided into 3 parts and ideation is done according to the context and in being sensitive to the needs and wants of the people of varanasi

Shows the unbuilt ideation the site, with the park, open ground, layers for urban plaza, productive landscape, kunds, storm water collection oints, modulated ghats for various activities in varanasi.

SITE APPROACH

PLAZA CHARACTER 1. Plaza facing the ghats, play a role to engage user in activities and recreational zones, to experience the lifestyle of Varanasi through food, religion, crafts, urban markets and vistas This plaza adapts to seasonal variations in climate, festivals and river activities(temporary structure, flea markets, eateries, shops & stalls) 2. Plaza between library and museum acts more of a medium to engage and connect people from streets, library and museum( waterbody seating spaces, small park, landscape (existing and new)

CONCEPT

Understanding the urban plaza through the existing ghats has they have dual nature, during monsoon and dry season, the activities happening on the ghats are showed in these sketches , while also considereing the heavy rain and floods which is experienced for 3 months

THE LIBRARY The public library revolves around the diverse population of varansi and encourages more people use the space while xperiencing different zones and scales of character.

THE TEXTILE MUSEUM Varanasi being famous for its fabrics and banarsi sarees, this textile museum holds the banras fabrics and its history, while exhibiting the lost crafts and techniques used to make these sarees which are displayed to the public, while trying to revive them with live workshops where the artisans showcase their works .The musuem is designed around the existing built vegetation, whithout disturbing their existence. as seen in the plan and section.

FASHION CAMPUS The semester intended to introduce the students to the various aspects of designing an institution. from understanding a instituitions intent and philosophy to its programmatic reqirements. The students were asked t o design a campus for fashion requiring one to design the intent program and the campus itself.

To understand fashion in its essence the field ws studied through multiple case studies the course structure was formulated splitting the learning in fashion into three facets which would further form the three undergraduate courses made available in the campus (FDT, FMM FMC) fashion design technology, fashion marketing and merchandising, fashion media and communication. the desing process would constitute of trying to understand ways of creating relationships between courses, batches. relationship between faculty and students. realationship between public and the campus. Studio guides: Asst Prof. Pallavi dhomse Prof. Prashanth Pole Prof. Vidyashankar

Site location: Kukkarahalli kere, Site opp to Kalamandir, Mysuru Site area : 7000sqm Built area : sqm Duration : 14 weeks

CONCEPT FRAMING CURRICULUM+ COURSES The types of courses and its structure was implemented through various case studies and readings. hence divide into UG(undergraduate) & PG(post- graduate) FDT - fashion design & technology FMC - fashion media & communication FMM - fashion marketing & merchandising TDT - textile design & technology FBM - fashion business & management COURSE & SPACE MAKING Understanding the relationship between courses and the space designed to accomdate them through exploring different architectural characters like volume, scale, light, areas COURSE, SPACE & STUDENT Understanding the relationship between various courses, the space designed and the student exploring the course. through understanding the types of space needed for a fashion design studio v/s media and communication studio COURSE, SPACE, STUDENT & FACULTY TEACHING - LEARNING ENVIRONMENT/EXPERIENCE Understanding the teaching and learning methodology required in a fashion school, while looking at different methodology

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE Understanding the relationship between the inside (fashion campus) & outside (the world ) through different layers existing in the fashion industry, technology as a major influence on todays fashion, sustainable and environment friendly fashion, uplifting artisans and reviving lost art forms

WEFT AND WARP, FIBRES

Weaving the raw fibres, into fragments. creating spaces while defining their character and identity.

FRAGMENTS

With fragments as pieces ready to take a form. the spaces originate into forms/blocks.

WEAVING THE FRAGMENTS

WRAPPING THE FABRIC

Fragments are woven to form a new fabric. the blocks are similary interwoven & connected to each other through walkways ,corridors & stairs.

The fabric is ready to be wrapped and drapped. the blocks are clothed, wrapped around with its roof forms.

CONCEPT

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COURSES AND INTENT

Translating the intent, programs and concepts to architectural diagramming and drawings trying to explore the character of each course and its role on students and how it influences in designing of spaces and vice versa.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTENT AND STUDENTS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PROGRAMS AND THE SITE

Exploring the idea of a void and levels in volumetric space of 12m. and how it transforms in different studios of the courses. and the influence of the volumes, scale. connect and transparency on the students.

CULTURAL CENTRE

The program arises out of observing the existing condition of the built heritage that is undergoing slow decay. Ways of rejuvinating the place need to be deliberated upon. This would include queries regarding how to keep the culture and built heritage alive. The program involves exploring ways of modulating scale to create presence at the precinct level but an appropriate one at street level considering the proximity of the heritage buildings flanking the site. It would also have room to look at the source of heritage and dwell in means of expressing it architecturally. Studio guides: Prof Srinivas S G Prof Ryan Thomas

MERCADO DE GOA The programs for the semester revolve around the notion that architectural interventions should capture the spirit of the place but be contemporary in expression. It is easy to be different and not too difficult to be a copy of the same. The challenge lies in being able to draw from the place and interpret it in a manner that is relevant now. In doing so one is enabling continuity in time creating meaningful history. The programs persued would be oriented at bringing up aspects associated with the nature of public space and the making of the public realm. A study of the historic precinct of Margao, a South Goan town, forms the basis for building upon the intent of the semester. Deliberations on how to deal with the historicity of the place and what to draw from its character form essential part of the programs presumed. The program is derived out the needs of the neighbourhood. The site is flanked by the old market, the Communidade and the civil court. The intent was to explore the possibility of deriving a built entity out of responses to the context. The nature of the building being to facilitate the neighbourhood, how to go beyond functionality and be an exercise at place making. Studio guides: Prof Srinivas S G Prof Ryan Thomas

CITY HOUSING

The task is to look at this portion of the city with a comprehnsive and with a more sympathetic small scale process of renewal/ regenaration. each site is compromised of 28 dwelling units(of various socio-ecomomic group). the aim is to give significance to the collective living through sharing spaces and infrastructure. the task also expects the design to be flexible in which each house is considered simultaneously as a unit (unique) and relation to the whole group, without losing quality rigor and standardization that the social housing requires. the stress is also in creating an identity or uniqueness for individual units, without much variation in sizes. the varying volumes also help in experiencing the unbuilt at different times of the day. emphasis is on climate to necessitate an inventiveness in the living patterns.
