2009-10 Women’s Hockey Media Guide

2009-10 Season Preview Last season the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team finished third in the OUA with a 16-10-0-1 regular season record and ranked ninth in Canada. The 2009-10 Varsity Blues are a hard working team, balanced by fresh rookie talent and 15 returning players from last year’s squad, and will look build a cohesive unit with each game throughout the year. Up front, U of T will be led by a group of veteran forwards including 2008-09 OUA first team all-star Annie DelGuidice. DelGuidice finished the 2008-09 season ranked eighth in OUA scoring due to her tremendous work ethic, puck-handling ability and brilliant sense of the game. Blues captain Karolina Urban had a breakout season in 2008-09 and led the OUA with seven powerplay goals last season, while Lindsay Hill and Emily Milito are always a threat to score and will look to continue their success around the net this season. Third-year players Brenley Jorgensen and Amanda Fawns round out the strong group of veteran forwards. Jorgensen finished second on the team in scoring with 19 points last season, while Fawns’ tremendous speed and footwork leads a strong attack whenever she hits the ice. Returning forwards Callie Bazak, Darby Smith, and Stacey Oue will provide depth to the Blues roster and will be relied on to step in wherever needed throughout the year. An impressive list of newcomers feature twin sisters Courtney and Alie Brind’Amour McClure, Madoc, Ont. native Ragan Danford, and first-year commerce student Kelly O’Hanlan. Toronto’s blue line will be anchored by returning defencemen Amy Cornell and Kelly Setter, as well as converted forward Allie White. A fifth-year veteran, Cornell provides strength to the Blues defensive corps and will use her tremendous point shot to generate some offensive opportunities. A member of the 2007-08 OUA all-rookie team, Setter makes a considerable impact with her tenacity and strong voice on the ice. White provides the Blues defence with the ability to add a fourth attacker in the offensive zone, while returning defencemen Bianca Mirabelli and Sarah Stephen will battle for increased playing time on the Blues back end. A third-year transfer student from the York Lions, Natalie Hughes will also provide some leadership this unit, while first-year defencemen Kaitlyn Bannon and Marlie McLaughlin are sure to step in and play a vital role. A member of the 2008-09 CIS all-rookie team, Kendyl Valenta returns as the Blues top goaltender this season. Valenta was the top rookie goaltender in the OUA (6th overall) last season with a 2.17 GAA, and was ranked second in both minutes played and wins. Winnipeg, Man. native Melissa Muir will be called upon to back up Valenta throughout the season.

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES HISTORY The University of Toronto women’s hockey program is rich in history and tradition. The Varsity Blues first iced a team in 1921 when a student-athlete named Marion Hilliard put together a team to play against McGill University. The women’s team won the first ever intercollegiate championship and would go on to win 11 more before the league was disbanded in 1933 due to the Depression. Hilliard’s activism left a lasting effect on women’s hockey in general and specifically at the University of Toronto, where the program has thrived. In the late 1960s league play was re-established among Ontario universities and the Varsity Blues have been a dominant force in the province and the country ever since. Starting in 1971-72 the Varsity Blues have captured 17 conference championships, more than any other team in the Ontario, and U of T was the team of the 1990s, winning six OUA championships and placing first in the OUA every season. In 1997, women’s hockey became a CIS sport and the Varsity Blues are one of only three teams to capture the coveted national title. They finished an unbeaten 35-0 season in 2000-01 winning the national title with a 4-3 victory over the Regina Cougars. Since the first International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sanctioned Women’s World Championship was held in Ottawa in 1990. U of T has enjoyed a strong relationship with Canada’s national team ever since. Eight Varsity Blues players have gone on to play for the national team: Lori Dupuis, Heather Ginzel, Jayna Hefford, Andrea Hunter, Leslie Reddon, Nathalie Rivard, Laura Schuler, and Vickey Sunohara. Dupuis, Hefford, Reddon, Schuler, and Sunohara also joined the Canadian Olympic team. In addition to the senior national team, the Varsity Blues have had five players on the Under 22 National Team. Susie Laska, Kim Malcher, Safiya Muharuma, Lisa Robertson, and Jill Savin have all worn the red and white for Canada while also wearing the blue and white of the Varsity Blues. U of T’s coaching staff has also been well represented nationally as both current head coach Karen Hughes and former head coach Dave McMaster have been with Canada’s national team. Hughes, the Varsity Blues head coach since 1993-94, has been involved with Canada’s national women’s team since 1996. From 1998 to 2001 Karen was an assistant coach with Canada’s gold medal winning national women’s team at the World Championships. She represented Canada as an assistant coach in 2002 at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In addition, Hughes was head coach of the U-22 National Team in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and was head coach of the Senior National Team when they captured gold at the 2004 World Championships.
