Coaching Staff Wenli Pan - Assistant Coach

Wenli Pan is in her sixth year with the Blues and joins the program after playing international volleyball for the past 20 years. Since 1996, Pan has made playing volleyball a professional career in Japan and Italy. Prior to playing professionally, Pan was a member of the Chinese national volleyball team from 1986 to 1996 and helped China win the silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and the bronze medal at the 1995 World Cup. Pan has also been honoured with many individual awards including the “Best Blocker” award at the 1993 Grand Prix. Pan’s extensive experience, strong understanding of the game and love of volleyball make her a tremendous asset to the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball program.

Tine Lee - Assistant Coach

Tine Lee is in his fourth year working with the Blues and has coached for over 25 years with various age groups and skill levels. Tine is also one of the head coaches of our junior development program. Tine started coaching girls and boys from his high school alma mater, Harbord Collegiate Institute in Toronto, where he guided his 1981 junior girls’ team to a city championship. The core of this team endeavoured to participate in the female version of “nine-man volleyball” starting in the summer of 1987 with Tine as their coach. Since then, every summer you can find Tine and former U of T assistant coach Ho Juen Chan literally pounding the pavement developing the skills of the girls and women of the Connex Volleyball Club which participates in the North American Chinese invitational volleyball tournament (NACIVT). The past two-and-a-half years, Tine has also coached at the Durham Attack volleyball club with the 17U and 18U girls. During this time, Tine has been fortunate to have coached seven provincial team members and have been triumphant in winning three provincial championships: the inaugural 17U provincial championship in 2005, the 18U provincial championship in 2006 and the 20U provincial championship in 2006. In addition, the 2006 team placed a solid fourth (Tier 1) at the 18U national championships.

Elodie Li Yuk Lo - Assistant Coach

Elodie enters her second year on the Varsity Blues bench. During her five years at the University of Toronto, she was the OUA East division rookie of the year in 2001-02, a two-time OUA second team all-star and won the OUA East division award of merit in 2005-06. 2009-10 OUA CHAMPIONS In the 2007-2008 OUA championship final it was the McMaster Marauders defeating theVarsity Blues at the University of Toronto. The Blues returned the favour Saturday night at McMaster’s Burridge Gym, sweeping the OUA final 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19). Karlee Diesing of Coquitlam, B.C. scored four of Toronto’s first eight points to give them the slight 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Waterdown native Heather Bansley helped Toronto build a 12-9 advantage and a her kill sent the teams to the second technical timeout with Toronto ahead by their biggest margin of the set, 16-11. McMaster’s Shannon McRobert (Whitby, Ont.) responded providing back-to-back blocks to cut the Toronto lead to 18-14. The teams traded points until a McRobert kill made it a three-point margin in favour of Toronto, 20-17. That was as close as the Marauders would get in the set with Bansley and Kristina Valjas (Toronto) closing it out with kills. The second set would prove to be the closest of the match despite Toronto building an early lead. Blues setter Kathleen Mahannah from North Vancouver, B.C. served Toronto to their first five points and a Valjas kill made it 6-0 soon there after. Oshawa, Ont. native Kaila Janssen got the Marauders on the board with a kill that seemed to spark the offence. Coming out of the first technical timeout down 8-5, some key blocking and a kill from Larissa Puhach (Burlington, Ont.) tied the set at 8-8. Bansley responded with back-to-back kills to re-establish the Toronto lead and the visiting Blues would head to the second technical timeout up two, 16-14. Out of the timeout, the Marauders kept edging closer to tying the contest until finally knotting things at 19. A McRobert kill gave the Marauders their first lead of the set, 20-19, as the McMaster faithful went crazy. To their credit, the Blues did not buckle. Rebecca Crosier’s (Ottawa) kill tied things at 21 and a Mahannah block gave the Blues a 23-21 lead. The Marauders would tie it again at 23-23, but Crosier won a free ball to give the Blues set point. On the next serve, a Marauder attack went long, giving Toronto game two. Down 2-0 in the match, McMaster scored first and a huge block on a free ball at the net by McRobert gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead. McMaster started to gain some momentum with an early lead but it was Toronto that was ahead 8-6 by the first technical timeout. As was the case in the first two sets, the teams exchanged points for much of the set until a Valjas attack found the line to give Toronto a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. Out of the timeout a Sarah Kieran (Hamilton, Ont.) kill made it 16-15 and she would team up with Holt on a block to tie things at 17-17. That would be as close as the Marauders would get as Diesing would score four of Toronto’s remaining eight points, including match point, to secure the set and the match. OUA East division libero of the year Michelle Wood was selected as the Mikasa player of the match and championship MVP. The fifth-year setter for the Blues had 18 digs and contributed three assists in the win. Diesing was an offensive force for Toronto, contributing 16 points. Bansley also scored in double figures with 12 points on ten kills and two aces. She also dug 19 balls on defence. Valjas rounded out the top scorers for Toronto with ten points on nine kills and two blocks assists, while adding 11 digs.

2009 Women’s Volleyball Media Guide

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES HISTORY As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s volleyball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto’s women’s volleyball program has achieved enviable success. It is a nationally competitive program that has captured seven Ontario championship titles. Blues volleyball has also been the most consistently successful program as the Blues have advanced to the OUA final four every year for the past 22 years. U of T is one of the only universities to integrate beach volleyball and volleyball training. Varsity Blues volleyball players have been very successful at the provincial, national and international beach volleyball levels currently three former players, Sarah Pothaar, Rebecca Moskowitz and Asta Baltakys, are representing Canada on the World Tour. Since 1994, at least 13 Varsity Blues players have competed for Canada on the FIVB World Tour, at World Beach Championships, at the World University Beach Championships and at the Pan American Games. The Varsity Blues volleyball program attracts talented athletes who are interested in learning and advancing their game. Many Varsity Blues players have been named to all-Ontario and all-Canadian teams and have represented Canada at international competitions in both indoor and beach volleyball. The 1968-69 women’s volleyball team dominated university competition in eastern Canada. Undefeated in regular season play, the 1968-69 Blues continued their winning streak into the playoffs, earning the league championship and the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union (WIAU) title. Coached by Marjory Shedd, the team was a dynamic group of outstanding talent, including Lois Kennedy - who was also a member of Canada’s national team. Six of the Blues players competed on the provincial team that won gold at the first Canada Games in 1967. Team members include: Jenny (Karstoff) Stoanka Allen, 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, Julia (Kucharachuk) Andruchiw, Jennifer (English) Fallis, Lida (Syrotynsky) Hoffmann, Lois Kennedy, Ruth (Unger) Morgan, Birgitte Nielsen-Worrall, Lynette (Bibby) Pasma, Luba (Olesnycky) Rabbel (captain), Lydia (Eliashevsky) Replansky, Mari Sagi, Jane (Guenther) Williams and Marjory Shedd (head coach). The Varsity Blues coaching and support staff has a range of expertise that makes them among the best in the country. Head coach Kristine Drakich leads the women’s Varsity Blues volleyball program and ensures the quality of the staff. Kristine is a NCCP high performance coach who has been recognized for her coaching (indoor and beach volleyball) both provincially and nationally. She has over 10 years of international volleyball playing experience (five years indoor and five years beach volleyball). A member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame since 1970, Marjory Shedd, a recent inductee to the Varsity Blues Hall of Fame, coached at U of T for 28 years (1964-91) and guided the Blues to seven league gold medals in volleyball, plus five Ontario gold medals and seven silver medals in badminton. Known as “Canada’s Lady of Badminton,” Marjory won 44 provincial and 24 national titles, including six consecutive triple crowns. She represented Canada in six Uber Cup competitions, including the first International Women’s Uber Cup in 1956-57. She also played on national championships teams in both basketball and volleyball, and represented Canada in volleyball at the 1967 Pan-American Games.
