Season Preview WHO’S GONE: Receivers Mark Stinson, Jeff Laforge, and Cory Kennedy, quarterback Dave Hamilton, offensive linemen Dave Scott-McDowell, Andrew Brankley, Cameron Deans and Shaun Feasby

WHO’S BACK: Receivers Drew Meerveld and Michael Prempeh, running back Walter Cariazo, offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk, defensive backs Derek Batchelor, Matt Morris and Kyle Kennedy

WHO’S NEW: Receiver Ahad Bandealy, offensive linemen Corey Hafezi and Harold Lee, defensive back Codi Rossi, defensive lineman Giovanni Boscariol, and linebacker Andrii Feshanets

Defence 2009 East West all-star game participants Mark Evans, Scott Smith and Derek Batchelor will be counted on to lead a defensive unit that did not lose anyone to graduation. This solid core of veterans accounted to the 25% of team tackles and 10 of the 19 Blues sacks. A fourth-year engineering student, Evans totaled 14 solo tackles and led the Blues with 3.5 sacks in 2008. His defensive tenacity is key to stopping the opposition’s ground game. He’ll also need help from fellow linemen Joe Cappiello and firstyear player from Vancouver College, Giovanni Boscariol. Linebacker Scott Smith, who led all Toronto players and finished ninth in the OUA with 37 tackles, returns and resumes his leadership role. He will be joined by veterans Wilkerson DeSouza, Rolli Adenmosun and Kyle Serkies. DeSouza had 28 solo tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. A 2008 OUA all-star, Batchelor was again a force in the Blues secondary this past season. He amassed 35.5 tackles and four sacks, and is poised to repeat his all-star performance for a third consecutive year. He, along with solid veterans Kyle Kennedy, Matt D’Souza and CFL combine invitee Matt Morris will help solidify the Blues defensive backfield. Offence This season will prove to be a big test offensively for the Blues. With the loss of fifth-year veterans Stinson, Hamilton, Laforge and three quarters of the offensive line, Toronto will rely on the skill and agility of third-year quarterback Andrew Gillis to right the ship. Gillis spent most of the 2008 season sidelined with a hamstring injury but has recovered this past off-season and is eager to guide his squad in 2009. A transfer-student from Queen’s, Gaels back-up quarterback Jansen Shrubb enters U of T’s MBA program and will be counted on to provide solid minutes and valuable leadership. Third-year running back, Walter Cariazo, will be the primary ball handler this season. Second-year back Johnathan Wright will also challenge for some prime playing time. Limited to just three games last season, Wright had 23 carries for 107 yards. 6-foot-5 offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk returns to the Blues and is needed to help fill a huge void created when fifthyear seniors Deans, Scott-McDowell and Brankley graduated this spring. A crop full of new recruits, including Lee and Hafezi, will also need to step in and step up in a hurry. Basketball player turned football receiver Drew Meerveld is a solid veteran returning to the receiving corps this season. The slotback has 23 catches for 287 yards, averaging 12.48 yards per attempt. Third year history major, Michael Prempeh, will also be a key target for his quarterback and will see a lot of action at the wide receiver position. Veterans Brandon Miller and Chris Vlowianities as well as first-year wideouts Bandealy and André Brock could challenge for some starting minutes. Special Teams With the biggest kick of his life 2008, Andrew Lomasney returns and will handle place-kicking duties again this season. In his first CIS game, Lomasney booted the game-winning field goal that ended the Varsity Blues record-breaking 49-game losing streak on September 1, 2008 vs. Waterloo. Lomasney hit 5-of10 field goals – his longest was 35 yards. Defensive back Willie Sharpe will double up as the team’s primary punter, taking over from Stinson, the all-Canadian receiver/ punter/ returner/ running back. Matt Morris was the team’s leading punt returner last season. He had 27 touches for 176 yards, and also returned a kick-off for a season-high 92 yards at opening night at Varsity Centre vs. Waterloo.

2008 Year in Review September 1, 2008 Varsity Blues 18, Waterloo Warriors 17 Varsity Centre

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team ended their 49-game losing streak as they defeated the Waterloo Warriors 18-17 on Saturday night at Varsity Centre. The Warriors were up 9-1 in the third quarter when Scarborough, Ont. native, Matthew Morris, made a 92-yard kick off return that led to a Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) touchdown two plays later to pull the Blues within one. Waterloo responded minutes later when Evan Martin (Kitchener, Ont.) connected on a beautiful 19-yard pass to Joshua Svec (Blenheim, Ont.) for his second touchdown of the game that put Waterloo up 17-8. The Blues did not give up and with 2:39 remaining in the fourth quarter, Toronto receiver Drew Meerveld (Guelph, Ont.) caught a touchdown pass, through traffic, from quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) to narrow the score 17-15. Hamilton kept the fire going as he found Michael Prempeh for a big 35-yard gain, his longest toss of the night, to put the Blues in field goal range. First-year kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont.) stepped up under pressure and knocked in a 32-yard field goal, with 26.2 seconds remaining in the game, to put the Varsity Blues up by one. The final seconds of the game were not without excitement but the Blues held on for their first win in six seasons. The Blues last victory came on October 13, 2001 when they defeated the Windsor Lancers 13-11. Hamilton completed 13 passes for 189 yards and Walter Cariazo (Toronto, Ont.) rushed for 76 yards. Meerveld posted three receptions for 67 yards for the Blues. Running back Marvin McCoody (Mississauga, Ont.) rushed 13 times for 64 yards while Martin completed 21 passes for 375 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team fell to the Windsor Lancers 38-14 at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers got on track early in the first quarter as quarterback Sam Malian (LaSalle, Ont.) connected with Ricky Postma (Blenheim, Ont.) on a 21-yard catch and run to give Windsor a 7-0 lead. After another Lancer touchdown, Blues quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) hit Cory Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) in the back of the end zone to cut the Lancers lead to ten, 17-7 at the half. Malian hit CIS all-Canadian receiver Glenn MacKay (Burlington, Ont.) with a 29-yard for the Lancers, making it 27-7 going into the fourth quarter. The Blues continued to press and scored their second major of the game on a 12-yard touchdown run from Hamilton. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team defeated the York Lions 58-7, claiming their first Argo Cup in 12 years in the 37th annual Red and Blue Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Centre. Varsity Blues quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) connected with teammate Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) for two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game, including a 79-yard toss-and-catch. Fifth-year receiver Cory Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) added another major on a 50-yard reception before York could get on the scoreboard. Starting quarterback Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) ran six yards for what would be the Lions only score of the game. Blues kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont.) continued to shine in his rookie season, kicking three field goals in the second quarter, including a 35-yarder to put the Blues up 30-7 at the half. Michael Prempeh (Toronto, Ont.) was on the receiving end of a Hamilton 19-yard pass for his first touchdown of the season, while Earl Johnson (Baltimore, MD) connected with second-year quarterback George Gretes (Toronto, Ont.) on an eight-yard pass for another Blues score. Stinson added his third touchdown of the afternoon with a three-yard run halfway through the third quarter. Kennedy rounded out the scoring with a fumble recovery for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, increasing the Blues lead to 58-7. The Blues have not recorded a win of this magnitude since they defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 63-0 on September 18, 1971. Co-players of the game recipients, Hamilton and Stinson continued to impress throughout the second half. Hamilton threw for 465 yards, going 22-of-32 with four touchdowns, while Stinson tallied a total of 208 yards receiving. 2008 Year in Review September 20, 2008 Queen’s Gaels 58, Varsity Blues 14 Varsity Centre

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fell to the Queen’s University Gaels 58-14 in front of a crowd of 1851 at Varsity Centre on Saturday, September 20. The Blues came out hungry for a touchdown, looking to score early. On the first play of the opening drive, Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) took a hand-off from quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) and threw to a wide open Jeff LaForge (Ottawa, Ont.) for a touchdown. However, it was called back on a holding penalty. On the ensuing drive, Gaels runningback Mike Giffen (Kingston, Ont.) took full advantage of his opportunities, breaking tackles for a 74-yard dash down the field that would eventually result in a Queen’s touchdown. Gaels doubled their lead five minutes later when Giffen added his second major of the day on another crafty 35-yard run. The Blues responded quickly when fifth-year co-captain Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) capped off a 66-yard drive with a four-yard run to cut the lead in half at the end of the first quarter. The Brannagan-Giffen duo each added another touchdown for the Gaels in the second quarter. Fifth-year receiver Scott Valberg (Kingston, Ont.) was on the receiving end of a 53-yard pass from Brannagan, putting the Gaels up 37-7 at halftime. Giffen and Valberg would each add another before Hamilton connected with Earl Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) on a 33-yard pass for the Blues second score of the game. 2008 Year in Review September 27, 2008 Guelph Gryphons 30, Varsity Blues 0

Alumni Stadium, Guelph

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team was blanked 30-0 by the University of Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Alumni Stadium in Guelph. The loss drops the Blues regular season record to 2-3 and marks the first time that Toronto has been shut out this season. The crushing blow for the Blues again came in the first minutes of the game. After the Blues opening drive in which they were unable to convert deep in Gryphons territory, Guelph’s quarterback Justin Dunk completed a 91-yard touchdown pass to wideout Jedd Gardner on their first play from scrimmage to put the home side up 7-0. The game remained close throughout the first half, however it was the Gryphons who managed two Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) field goals in the second quarter to extend Guelph’s lead to 13-0 at the end of the first half. Converting possessions into points was a key facture to the Blues inability to put points on the board. Although Toronto held possession of the ball for over 60% of the game, the team was unable of make good of scoring opportunities throughout the game. Although the Blues out-rushed the Gryphons on this day, they continued to have difficulties getting the ball into the end zone once inside the red zone. Jonathan Wright (Belleville, Ont.) racked up 71 yards on 14 carries to lead the Blues, while veteran Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) carried the ball 12 times, tallying 51 yards on the ground. Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) led the Gryphons running game, carrying the ball 14 times for 71 yards and one touchdown in the third quarter, capitalizing on Blues turnover in their own end and stretching the Guelph lead to 20-0. The Marauders would counter later in the third quarter on an Ugonna Ihekwoaba (Burlington, ON) two-yard touchdown, the first career rushing touchdown for the fifth-year full back. Stinson added his second touchdown of the game with a 13-yard reception from Blues quarterback David Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) with 1:12 remaining on the clock. However, it would't be enough on this night as the Blues fell 27-19. McMaster runningback, Joey Nemet (Burlington, ON) rushed for over one-hundred yards for the second-consecutive game, carrying the ball 14 times for 106 yards. Hamilton aired it out all evening for the Blues, throwing for 342 yards, going 28-of-45 with one touchdown. Toronto receiver Cory Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) had six catches for 117 yards while Earl Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) added eight receptions for 97 yards. 2008 Year in Review October 9, 2008 Western Mustangs 56, Varsity Blues 15 Varsity Centre

An interception on the opening drive and a fumble on the first possession of the second quarter would set the tone for the game as the University of Toronto Varsity Blue fell to the No. 5 Western Mustangs, 56-15, at Varsity Centre in front of a Thanksgiving Thursday crowd of 1749. Western rookie running back Nathan Riva (LaSalle, Ont.) led the way for the Mustangs for the second week in a row with 163 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns. The LaSalle, Ont. native rushed for 124 yards, finding the end zone on four different occasions, including a 53-yard scamper to help the Mustangs build a 35-0 lead at the end of the first half. Toronto would finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and erase the Western shutout when Willie Sharpe (Renfrew, Ont.) blocked a Derek Wheeler (Hamilton, Ont.) punt to set up the offence on the visiting 33-yard line. On the ensuing play, fifth-year pivot Dave Hamilton (Mississauga, Ont.) hit fellow graduating teammate Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta.) with a touchdown pass with 6:25 remaining in the game. Toronto would put together another solid offensive series on the following possession, capped by a Hamilton five-yard run for the major. Metcalfe, Ont. native Cory Kennedy caught his fourth pass of the drive on the two-point conversion. In the final home game of his career, Hamilton completed 20-of-38 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed eight times for 52 yards and one touchdown. Western quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) continued his consistent play. 2008 Year in Review October 18, 2008 Ottawa Gee-Gees 39, Varsity Blues 30 Frank Clair Stadium, Ottawa

With a playoff spot still on the line, the Varsity Blues football team put forth a valiant effort but fell just short in a 39-30 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Frank Clair Stadium on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 18). Blues quarterback David Hamilton (2139) became only the second Toronto pivot to pass for 2,000 yards in a season, finishing the day 23-of-37 for 250 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception. The only other person to have accomplished this feat for the Blue and White is 1981 Hec Crighton-winner Dan Feraday (2656 in 1981; 2227 in 1980). In their final game for the Blue and White, fifth-year receivers Mark Stinson (Calgary, Alta), Jeff LaForge (Ottawa, Ont.) and Cory Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) put on a show and helped their fellow graduate Hamilton build a 23-10 lead through two quarters in an attempt to upset the heavily-favoured Gee-Gees. Co-captain Stinson led the Blues receiving corps with eight catches for 98 yards, scoring the Blues second touchdown on a 20-yard reception to put the visitors up 14-10 five minutes into the second quarter. Kennedy, the Blues all-time pass receiver, added to his total with six receptions (153) for 92 yards and one touchdown. The Ottawa-area native (Metcalfe) hauled in the Blues third major of the day and helped increase the Blues lead to 23-10 heading into halftime. The third quarter was all Ottawa. The Gee-Gees score 14-unanswered points, stifling the Blues aerial attack to take a slight 24-23 lead at the end of three quarters. With Ottawa up 32-23, LaForge capped off a never-say-die drive with a 10-yard reception for the major to pull Toronto to within two points. Battling a hamstring injury, LaForge caught five passes for 32 yards in his final collegiate performance. However, the excitement was short lived as Ottawa quarterback Josh Sacobie (Fredricton, NB) and the Gee-Gees running game drove the home team back down the field for the final score of the game, officially ending the Blues season. Varsity Blues Record Manual A Brief History of Varsity Blues Football 2009 marks the 132nd year of football at the University of Toronto. It has been a remarkable history that includes a long list of football firsts, as well as four Grey Cup, two Vanier Cup and 25 Yates Cup championships. The earliest documented game of "football" on the U of T campus occurred 145 years ago, on November 9, 1861, though in the early years the game ran under uniquely local rules that required players to bounce the ball. It was in 1877 that the rules of rugby were introduced to U of T by J.H. Mayne Campbell, giving birth to the modern Varsity Blues football team. Over the next century, the rules of rugby in Canada gradually evolved into the modern game of Canadian football. Most of Varsity’s early opponents were club teams such as the Hamilton Tigers and the Toronto Argonauts. U of T’s first interuniversity game was played in 1879 in Detroit against the University of Michigan, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw. Varsity’s first Canadian university contest was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the U of T front campus. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930s. Previously, nicknames were not always customary for university teams and references such as ‘The Big Blue’, ‘The Blue and White’ and ‘The Varsity Blue’ appeared interchangeably. Official interuniversity competition began in 1898, with Varsity capturing the inaugural Yates Cup, and 10 of the first 17 championships. Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 through 1911; with the latter three being best known as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season. U of T made their final Grey Cup appearance in 1926, dropping a 10-7 decision to the Ottawa Rough Riders. In the end, Varsity claimed four Grey Cup titles in all ('09,'10,'11,'20). Through the 1920s and 30s U of T captured six Yates Cups, and would add six more before 1970. However, it was in the early 50s that U of T football attracted its largest crowds. Immediately following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21, 1950. If one team stands out at U of T, it would be the 1958 squad. The team was coached by Dalt White, and is regarded by many as the Varsity Blues’ strongest ever. They averaged almost 40 points a game and remain the only U of T football team to go undefeated and untied since the 1910 squad. Seven years later, White’s final season on the sidelines, the Varsity Blues claimed another first, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup championship by a 14-7 score over the University of Alberta. The 1965 team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Meanwhile, since 1965 the Varsity Blues have captured five Yates Cup titles. The Varsity Blues claimed their second Vanier Cup in 1993 under the tutelage of head coach Bob Laycoe. In a thrilling final, Glenn McCausland returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, a Vanier Cup record that still stands today, as the Varsity Blues slipped past the University of Calgary 3734.

Vanier Cup I - 20 November 1965 Varsity Blues 14, Alberta Golden Bears 7 Varsity Stadium, Toronto

In 1965, the Canadian Save the Children Fund inaugurated the Vanier Cup as an invitational post-season bowl game. As the 1965 Yates Cup champions the Blues were invited to play against the Western Conference champion Alberta Golden Bears. Game day arrived, and there was a steady downpour in near-freezing temperature, not the most conducive conditions to entice a crowd. Passing was virtually a write-off in such conditions, both teams having to rely heavily on the running game. Toronto scored a rouge 12:50 into the game on a missed 32-yard field goal, breaking the initial deadlock. Alberta's first points came 3:55 into the second quarter with the defence intercepting Taylor's pass, and running it 58 yards for the touchdown. The Blues blocked the convert, but Alberta made the score 7-1 with a single on and 18-yard missed field goal at 10:11 in the same quarter. Much of the third quarter entailed both teams punting back and forth, with little being accomplished. On the final play of the quarter, Taylor pulled off what is still one of the strangest successful plays in Vanier history. He handed off to Gerry Sternberg, who gave the ball to Jim Ware, who in turn lateraled back to Taylor. While the whole of the Golden Bears defence scurried in bewilderment, Taylor fired a 23-yard strike to Mike Eben, alone in the end zone. The convert gave Varsity an 8-7 lead, which Taylor increased to 14-7 on a 7-yard run on the final play of the game, clinching the first Vanier Cup title for the Varsity Blues. Sternberg was given the Teddy Morris Memorial Trophy as outstanding player of the game, rushing for 85 yards. In a ceremony in the spring of 1966, Governor General Georges Vanier presented the trophy bearing his name to the Blues at the annual Athletic Banquet, putting the final glory on one of the finest Varsity Blues football teams. The entire 1965 football team was later inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Varsity Blues Record Manual Vanier Cup XXIX 20 November 1993 Varsity Blues 37, Calgary Dinosaurs 34 SkyDome, Toronto The Varsity Blues captured the 29th Vanier Cup championship in a game to be remembered. Diminutive Glen McCausland scored on an 81-yard punt return, a Vanier Cup record, to pace Toronto to an exciting 37-34 victory over the Calgary Dinosaurs. Calgary kicker Bruce Parsons could have sent the game into overtime with 10 seconds remaining, but his 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Blues' John Raposo. The Blues took a 23-7 lead in the third quarter, but Calgary rallied to make it 23-21. It was then that McCausland, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, took matters into his own hands. The five-foot-six, 165-pound star made a scintillating punt return 28 seconds into the fourth frame for a touchdown. Toronto linebacker Barry McCamus then put the Blues ahead 37-21 at 3:29 when he scored on a 22-yard interception return. Calgary again rallied, thanks to Chris Lewis' one-yard touchdown run at 7:30 and John Kalin's 13-yard scoring strike to James Buchanan at 12:09. These scores cut Toronto's lead to 37-34. Calgary got the ball at its 45-yard line with less than a minute remaining after a surprising third-down Toronto gamble failed. Kalin guided Calgary to the Toronto 15 prior to Raposo's block. The win was Toronto’s first Vanier Cup title since 1965. SCORING Calgary Toronto
