Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and helped guide the team to berths in 2005 and 2006 CIS championship tournaments. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to their most recent OUA title. Capotosto holds a Canadian National ‘B’ coaching licence and United States Soccer Federation National ‘C’ and ‘Y’ licences. In the spring of 2008, Anthony travelled to England for a 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Ipswich Town Football Club of the English First Division. OUA Silver Medalists The No. 1 University of Toronto Varsity Blues fell to the McMaster Marauders 1-0 (5-4 sudden death penalty kicks) in the OUA championship game on Sunday, November 8 at Varsity Centre. Toronto’s seventh shooter, Darragh McGee, sent his shot high over the crossbar, ending the three-hour match and giving McMaster their first OUA title since 1992 in a 1-0 victory. Third-year midfielder Anthony Costa (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had four shots and was named the Marauders’ player of the game, while goalkeeper John Smits earned player of the game honours for the Blues with nine saves on the day. Both teams came out ready to go and eager to play. Monkgogi Moseki (Hamilton, Ont.) set the tone as he put Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) to work early, recording the first shot of the game in the 3rd minute. Similarly, Toronto midfielder Geoffrey Borgmann (Dixie, Ont.) kept Grant on his toes, as he sent a hard shot toward the bottom right corner of the net that was denied in the 7th minute. U of T looked like they were going to score as Alex Raphael (East York, Ont.) found himself all alone with Grant, however and offside call was made before the fourth-year striker could find the back of the net. McMaster also was close to opening the scoring in the 25th minute when an Aaron Boothe (Whitby, Ont.) corner kick found its way to the front of the six-yard box but Smits was there to turn away the well-placed kick and keep the game deadlocked. The Marauders continued to press but Blues defenders Yannis Gianniotis (Toronto) and McGee (Donegral, Ireland) stood tall as the game remained tied 0-0 at the half. McMaster held the play for the first 15 minutes of the second half and it wasn’t until third-year Blues midfielder Scott Nesbitt (Scarborough, Ont.) sent a booming shot just over the top of the net that got Toronto back in the game. Chinomnso Nwamadi (Brampton, Ont.) nearly got the Marauders on the board as his shot hit the cross bar.Moments later, McMaster continued to press in Toronto’s end but Smits was there every step of the way, keeping the game scoreless. For the fourth time in as many games at the OUA men’s soccer championship, the game would go into overtime and be decided by penalty kicks. After the first five penalty kicks, both teams had scored three times. McMaster’s Reilly knocked in the first sudden-death shot with Blues Borgmann countering. Kyle Grootenboer (Brantford, Ont.) would also score for the Marauders, forcing Toronto’s hand. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for McGee, who sent his shot high and wide left.

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES HISTORY The University of Toronto men’s soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was first introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the then-novel “Association game.” The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T men’s soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships nine times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. The Blues were OUA silver medalists from 2005-07 and last captured the OUA title in 2002. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 36 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES – 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS
In 1988, the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team claimed the nation’s top prize, a CIAU championship, for the first time in U of T history. The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queen’s 4-2 in the provincial semifinals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis and George Argyropoulos. And in the final, Cubellis notched the game’s only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal. The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours. The 1988-89 championship team included Terry Apostolou (Manager), George Argyropoulos, Chris Collie, David Collie, Pat Cubellis, John Diniz, Patrick Fancott, John Fitzgerald, Guido Geisler, Domenic Ientile, Alan Kennedy, Ben Kwak, Tom Lazarou, Rod MacGregor, (therapist) Dino Mastrogianis, William Murray, Robert Pacas, Bill Papaconstantinou, Nino Perrotta, Peter Sarantopoulos, Tony Tata, Tom Tsilfidis, Mark Varkul, Coz Zambazis and head coach Jim Lefkos.
