Humber College (1983-2004): Overall 455-156 Prior to joining the Varsity Blues in 2004, Katz led the Humber College men's basketball team for 19 seasons (455-156 overall record). During that time, he led the Hawks to the Final Four every year, winning seven provincial championships and five national titles while also producing seven all-Canadian players. Katz is also a four-time OCAA Coach of the Year and a three-time CCAA Coach of the Year award winner and was inducted into the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame in 2004. Katz is also the assistant coach of the Canadian national basketball squad, and took part in the 2000 Olympic Games and World Championships in 1993 and 2002. In 1997, he guided Canada's team at the World University Games in Sicily to a silver medal. Katz was also the head coach of the Ontario provincial team from 1986 to 1989, capturing one gold and one silver medal. Katz was named both OUA and CIS coach of the year in the 2007-08 season.

Coaching Staff

Rick Delina - Assistant Coach Rick Dilena returns to the Blues’ staff for his sixth season as an assistant coach. Prior to coaching the Blues, Dilena spent seven years as the men’s basketball head coach at Seneca College. Known as a tireless recruiter and exceptional motivator, Dilena is teaming up with Blues’ head coach Mike Katz for the second time, having worked with him from 1988 to 1995 at Humber College where their combined efforts resulted in four national championships. Dilena is a graduate of York University and teaches physical education at Dante Alighieri Academy.

Mike De Giorgio - Assistant Coach Former Blues captain and most valuable player, Michael De Giorgio joined the Blues bench following up his graduation. De Giorgio, a 2007-08 OUA first team all-star, was instrumental in helping the team achieve their unprecedented No. 5 national ranking in his final season. An academic all-Canadian, he averaged 30.7 minutes per game and was ranked third in the OUA and CIS in assists-per-game (7.23) in 200708.

Chris Aim - Assistant Coach Chris Aim joins the Varsity Blues men’s basketball coaching staff after a year with the women’s team. After playing at Humber College, Chris started coaching minor league basketball teams around Toronto. He has been the head coach of the basketball teams at Northern Secondary School and North Toronto Collegiate, as well as the head coach of the juvenile and junior girls team of the North Toronto Basketball Association (NTBA).

Rob Paris - Assistant Coach A three-time OUA all-star during his five-year career, Rob Paris joins the Varsity Blues coaching staff fresh after graduation in 2010-11. In his final year, he led the Blues with 15.63 points per game and recorded his 1000th career point on January 23, 2010 against the York Lions. In that same game, Paris established a new Blues regular season single-game scoring record, with 46 points.

Josh Sutier - Assistant Coach Josh Suiter makes the transition from team manager to assistant coach in 2010-11. After completing his undergraduate degree at Queen’s University, Suiter completed his master’s of teaching at U of T and currently works and coaches at the University of Toronto Schools (UTS).

2009-10 Men’s Basketball Media Guide

2010-11 Season Preview WHO’S GONE Three-time OUA all-stars Nick Magalas and Rob Paris; veteran guard Patrick Sewell and forward Nick Snow.

WHO’S BACK Power forward Drazen Glisic; fourthyear shooting guard Justin Holmes; veteran point guard Anthony DeGiorgio; fourth-year centre Andrew Wasik.

WHO’S NEW Cornell transfer Alex Hill; St. FX transfer Sean Nickel; first-year point guard Matt Savel.

After losing four-of-five starters, the 2010-11 Varsity Blues men’s basketball team has re-tooled this year with a mixture of key returning players, veteran transfers and talented newcomers as they look to maintain their position as one of the top teams in the OUA. Veteran Drazen Glisic will need to provide consistency and the necessary leadership to push this young squad past both Carleton and Ottawa in the tough OUA East division. The 6-foot-6 power forward led the team in rebounds (176) and field goal percentage (58.2%) in 2009-10 and will need to improve those numbers to help solidify and stabilize Toronto’s offensive flow this season. Fourth-year centre Andrew Wasik is a great low post player whose imposing size and strength in the key will provide the Blues with solid scoring opportunities and a defensive presence around the basket. NCAA division 1 transfer Alex Hill returns to his hometown after a one-year stint with the Cornell Big Red. Hill is a deadly three-point shooter who attacks the rim well and is no stranger to Varsity Blues athletics; his father played basketball at U of T in the 1980s, while his mother was a U of T and Canadian triple jump champion. Fourth-year St. FX transfer Sean Nickel is at 6-foot-5 forward who brings solid shooting skills and the ability to stretch the defence. Third-year forward Ben Garvin, another sharp shooter, looks to play his way into some significant time on the court after a promising year in 2009-10. Veterans Anthony De Giorgio and Justin Holmes are primed to step into starting roles after the graduation of OUA all-star guards Rob Paris and Nick Magalas. De Giorgio is a scrappy fifth-year point guard who has great vision on the court, shares the ball well and grinds it out during every possession. Holmes, a fourth-year shooting guard, is an athletic threepoint shooter who can also attack the rim. The 5-foot-11 Toronto native is another gritty player who is not afraid to challenge for loose balls. They will be joined by point guard Matt Savel, whose ability to find lanes and pass the ball is sure to solidify some playing time for the rookie this season. Sophomore guard Dakota Laurin handles the ball well, penetrates aggressively and has a very accurate pull-up jumper.

2009-10 Year in Review

The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team finished the season 12-10 and in third place in the OUA East division. The Blues season came to a sudden halt with an 86-79 loss to the York Lions in the East quarter-final round. The Blues went 9-1 in preseason action and won the Ottawa Gee-Gees Jack Donahue tournament, Oct. 23-25, where third-year centre Andrew Wasik was named the most valuable player. Toronto was 5-3 in the first half of the season before becoming plagued by injury in early January. U of T finished 2009-10 strong with two big wins over the Ryerson Rams to gain home court advantage going into the playoffs, however, they ran into a hot Lions squad and their season came to an abrupt end. Fifth-year guard Rob Paris led the Blues and finished the season ranked 13th in the OUA with 15.63 points per game, while fellow veteran Nick Magalas was not far behind with 15.09 points per game. Both reached their 1000th career point in the latter half of the season, while Paris established a new Blues regular season singlegame scoring record against the Lions, scoring 46 points in their game at York on Jan. 23. Third-year forward Drazen Glisic finished the season ranked second in the province with a 58.2 FG% and sixth with eight boards per game. Paris and Magalas were named OUA first team all-stars.

VARSITY BLUES HISTORY

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball team captured the inaugural Ontario men’s intercollegiate championship in 1908-09. Nearly a century later, the Varsity Blues continue to chase the province’s top men’s basketball prize. U of T has collected the conference crown 14 times, second-best in the OUA, and last brought home the Wilson Cup in 1995. In 1996, the Varsity Blues were the OUA East champions and Wilson Cup finalists. Along with team accolades, Varsity Blues basketball also regularly attracts some of the top high school studentathletes both from Ontario and nationwide. Since 1985, 48 Varsity Blues have been named OUA all-stars, including former standouts Eddy Meguerian, Rob Wilson and Fred Murrell who also earned all-Canadian honours. In the past 15 years, a number of Varsity Blues have spent time with the Canadian National team including Meguerian, Wilson, Mark Harvey and Jason Dressler. The Varsity Blues have also been to the post-season 13 times in the past 18 years, including three straight trips to the ‘Final Eight’, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championship, from 1995 to 1997. As part of the Varsity Blues family, men’s basketball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. In 2004-05 the Varsity Blues welcomed new head coach Mike Katz, who brings a wealth of experience and past success from his time at Humber College and with the Canadian National Team. Since then, under Katz's and his staff's leadership, the Blues have finished in the top three the past five seasons in the OUA East conference, with a combined league record of 84-48 and three playoff victories. In addition, Katz earned 2007-08 OUA and CIS coach of the year honours.
