Coaching Staff

Jim Henderson - Assistant Coach Jim Henderson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Blues’ bench again this year. He has 33 years of experience as a high school basketball coach, winning 15 high school championships. As head coach of the Humber College Hawks women’s basketball team for nine years, Jim received four OCAA Coach of the Year awards, two CCAA Coaching Excellence awards, as well as three gold, three silver and three bronze OCAA medals. As head coach of the Weston Spartans OBA Premier Club Team, he has won four OBA gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Christine Cho - Assistant Coach Christine Cho, a former U of T standout, enters her first year as an assistant coach with the Varsity Blues. A three-time OUA all-star, Cho was the captain of the women’s basketball team for three of her five years (2003-08) in the Blue and White. She led her team to a first-place finish in the OUA East and a trip to the CIS championship in her final year of eligibility. Cho also received the OUA East Joy Belinger award in 2007-08, presented to a student-athlete in recognition of outstanding service to the sport and the advancement of university athletics.

Cho played pro for the Esperance Sportive Pully in the Switzerland league ‘A’ for one year. She has been an instructor at Camp U of T and has taught at the Toronto Raptors Basketball Academy. She also coached the Toronto French School’s under-13 boys basketball team in 2007-08.

Season Preview WHO’S BACK Two-time OUA all-star and 2009-10 CIS all-Canadian Nicki Schutz; veteran guards Erin McNeely, Joanna Medri and Sherri Pierce.

WHO’S NEW Guard Jill Stratton; forwards Rachael Sider and Liane Bailey.

With their full veteran corps returning and a handful of promising rookies, the Varsity Blues women’s basketball team looks to improve on their 10-10 record and get back to the top of the OUA standings this season. The Blues turn to 2009-10 CIS all-Canadian Nicki Schutz to again set the pace this season. Schutz led the country with 11 rebounds per game and was third in the OUA with 17.95 points per game. She recorded 14 double-doubles last year, including 11 in the last 12 games. At 6-foot-2, second-year forward Alicia Van Kampen will use her long limbs to impose her presence under the basket, while veteran Megan Stoncius contributes an aggressive style of play at both ends of the floor. Rachael Sider joins the Blues from New Westminster S.S. in Vancouver where she led her team to a provincial championship and was named a first team all-star. Liane Bailey led the Vanier College AAA team to their second consecutive third-place finish at the Quebec provincial championship, scoring 20 points and earning player of the game status in the semi-final. Fellow rookies Julie Longauer, Kristina Menton and Jaine Taylor as well as second-year Brock Badgers transfer Amanda Lauzon all stand above 5-foot-10 and are expected to make an impact this season. Veteran guards Erin McNeely, Joanna Medri and Sherri Pierce solidify the Blues back court. They are all veteran ball handlers and effectively shoot from the perimeter. Now in her fifth year, McNeely is a strong outside threat and will be called on to post similar numbers that saw her ranked second on the team last year. Both entering their fourth year, Medri and Pierce will contribute solid minutes for the team this season. Medri was third on the team with 7.8 points per game last season, while Pierce returns to the roster after a year’s hiatus and looks to return to the form that saw her average 8.1 points per game in 2008-09. Sophomore Katelyn McConnell is a quick guard with a great scoring touch, while Etobicoke, Ont., native Jill Stratton looks to step in and see significant playing time in her first year with the Blues. Stratton was team captain of the Etobicoke Storm, a team that she led to the division 1 provincial championship title in the Ontario Basketball Association. The Blues head into the 2010-11 season with great expectations. With a mature and experienced core group of players and a crop of enthusiastic new recruits, they are ready to challenge the province’s best for another OUA title and a berth in the CIS championship tournament in March.

2009-10 Year in Review Nicki Schutz led a young Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to an 11-11 record and a sixth-place finish in the OUA East division. The Blues capped off the regular season with four straight wins after going 4-6 in the first half of the year. Toronto went on to upset the third-place Queen’s Gaels 62-54 in an OUA East quarter-final match-up in Kingston, Ont. to advance to the semifinals. Unfortunately, the Blues then faced the first-place Carleton Ravens in Ottawa and dropped a 68-46 decision as their season came to a close. Schutz led the Blues with an incredible 14 double-doubles, including 11 in their last 12 games. The fourth-year forward led the team and finished the season ranked first in the country with 11 boards per game. She was also ranked third in the OUA, ninth in the CIS, with 17.95 points per game. Erin McNeely also had a standout season, finishing with 10.2 points per game. Schutz was named an OUA first team all-star and CIS second team all-Canadian.

VARSITY BLUES HISTORY

As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s basketball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues basketball team has made 15 trips to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship, including a berth in the 2002 national tournament. With one national title, two silver medals and two bronze medals to show for their efforts, the Varsity Blues are gunning for a trip back to the CIS Championship in 2010-11. U of T has collected the conference crown nine times, the second best in the OUA. The team has brought home the OUA title four times in the past 15 seasons. Along with team accolades, Varsity Blues basketball also regularly attracts some of the top high school studentathletes both here in Ontario and across the country. Since 1985, 53 Varsity Blues have been named OUA allstars and 17 have been named CIS all-Canadians. A number of Blues players have spent time with the Canadian national team and Justine Ellison earned CIS Athlete of the Year honours in 1996. On the sidelines, head coach Michèle Bélanger returns for her 30th season behind the Varsity Blues bench. Her record speaks for itself - nine OUA championships, 15 CIS Championship appearances and five CIS top three finishes, including a national championship crown in 1986. Varsity Blues Women’s basketball is all about excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
