2010 OUA Champions

TORONTO - The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s soccer team defeated the host York Lions 1-0 in a shootout on Sunday evening (Nov. 7) to win their first OUA title since 2002 at York Stadium. Toronto and York, who finished first in the OUA East and West divisions, respectively, were evenly matched throughout the game and a shootout was a fitting end. Kicking the winning shot for the Varsity Blues was Darragh McGee of Donegal, Ireland in the sixth round. Blues goalkeeper and player of the match John Smits of Mississauga, Ont. then stepped up and made a huge save on a shot by Carlos Noguiera (Brampton, Ont.) for the win. Possession was even in the first half as both the Lions and Varsity Blues had multiple scoring chances, but for the most part were shut down by each other before either team could get close to the net. The two teams had four corners apiece in the first half but none proved to be very dangerous. The Lions had the best chance in the 37th minute. Selvin Lammie of Toronto went into the box alone but was hauled down by McGee, who received a yellow card on

2010 Men’s Soccer Media Guide

the play, and the Lions were awarded a penalty kick. Striker Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) took the shot and fired it to the right of Smits, who dove to his side to come up with a huge save at the goal line. The game played out in similar fashion in the second half and into overtime. Toronto and York traded opportunities but could not find the back of the net, and it wasn’t until the shootout when action really picked up. Toronto’s Yannis Gianniotis (Toronto) made good on the first shot, but York’s Branko Majstorovic (Mississauga, Ont.) bounced his shot off the post to give the Varsity Blues the early lead. However, the Lions got back into it right away when Sotiri Varlokostas (Toronto) made a great save on Geoffrey Borgmann (Mississauga, Ont.). Alon Badat (Thornhill, Ont.), Dominic Antonini (Winnipeg) and Daniel Fabrizi (Brampton, Ont.) all made good on their attempts for the Lions, while Ezequiel Lubocki (Winnipeg) and Alex Raphael (East York, Ont.) responded for the Varsity Blues. However, Nordo Gooden of Kingston, Jamaica fired his shot over the net, which gave Pena the opportunity to win it in the fifth round. He stepped up to the spot and tapped a shot into the corner but Smits was there to make yet another game-saving stop.

2010 OUA Awards & All-Stars Darragh McGee, Ezequiel Lubocki and Lawrence Buchan won three of the four major awards, while four other Varsity Blues earn all-star status when Ontario University Athletics (OUA) announced men’s soccer East division award winners on Thursday, November 4. McGee of Donegal, Ireland was named the OUA East division’s most valuable player in only his second year with the Blues. The sophomore defender and co-captain scored five goals this season which earned him the MVP honours and a spot on the OUA first team all-star list. A native of Winnipeg, Lubocki is the recipient of the T. Litizen rookie of the year award. The first-year midfielder was a regular starter for the strong Blues squad and helped lead them to a first-place finish in the East. Lubocki scored four goals this season and also earns first team all-star status. Buchan of Port Moody, B.C., earns the OUA East community service award, given to a player who has been involved within his school as well as his community. This mechanical engineering major has served as a staff coach for Camp U of T that requires him to work with young players in the Toronto community. The third-year midfielder also organized and ran the annual high school tournament each year since he’s been a part ofU of T’s men’s soccer program. Joining McGee and Lubocki on the first team all-star list are fifth-year strikers Nordo Gooden and Alexander Raphael. Now a two-time OUA all-star, Gooden of Kingston, Jamica, scored six goals this season for the Blues, while Raphael, of East York, Ont., earns his second consecutive first team nod for his team-high eight goal performance in 2010. Blues goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) and midfielder Dylan Bams also earn their second consecutive all-star nod, this time as members of the second team. Smits led the Blues between the pipes this season, allowing only five goals against and earning nine shutouts in 14 games. Bams tallied three goals in 2010 and rounds out the six members of the Varsity Blues who received all-star recognition. Record Manual VARSITY BLUES HISTORY The University of Toronto men’s soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was first introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the then-novel “Association game.” The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T men’s soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships nine times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. The Blues were OUA silver medalists from 2004-06 and 2009 and last captured the OUA title in 2002. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 37 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES – 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS

In 1988, the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team claimed the nation’s top prize, a CIAU championship, for the first time in U of T history. The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queen’s 4-2 in the provincial semifinals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis and George Argyropoulos. And in the final, Cubellis notched the game’s only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal. The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours. The 1988-89 championship team included Terry Apostolou (Manager), George Argyropoulos, Chris Collie, David Collie, Pat Cubellis, John Diniz, Patrick Fancott, John Fitzgerald, Guido Geisler, Domenic Ientile, Alan Kennedy, Ben Kwak, Tom Lazarou, Rod MacGregor, (therapist) Dino Mastrogianis, William Murray, Robert Pacas, Bill Papaconstantinou, Nino Perrotta, Peter Sarantopoulos, Tony Tata, Tom Tsilfidis, Mark Varkul, Coz Zambazis and head coach Jim Lefkos.
