Greg also coordinated numerous fundraising activities for the X-Men, successfully raising more than $60,000 over two years for the football program. As full-time assistant on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues staff for the next three seasons (200305), Greg was in charge of building the team's national recruiting program while guiding the special teams and receiving corps. Greg then served as the Calgary Dinos special teams coordinator and offensive assistant from 2006-07. average in every category but one. Greg coordinated recruiting in Central and Eastern Canada for the Dinos. As a player, Greg was successful at an early age. He played for the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in 1990 and again from 1994 to 1997. He was the starting wide receiver in the 1996 Vanier Cup, catching one pass for 11 yards while the X-Men fell 31-12 to the Saskatchewan Huskies. Season Preview WHO’S GONE:

WHO’S BACK:

WHO’S NEW:

Offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk, receiver Drew Meerveld and defensive backs Matthew Morris and Matt D’Souza.

Quarterback Andrew Gillis, receivers Jonathan Wright and Michael Prempeh, offensive lineman Josh Gibbs, defensive backs Derek Batchelor, Kyle Kennedy and Willie Sharpe, linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza and defensive lineman Mark Evans.

Receiver Alex Pierzchalski, running backs Aaron Milton and Chris Weiland, defensive backs Trevor Harvey and Hugo Lopez, linebacker Christopher Johnson and defensive linemen James Bodanis and Zack Lukings.

Defence:

Derek Batchelor, Wilkerson DeSouza and Mark Evans will be called upon to lead Toronto’s defensive unit that has shown vast improvement during Greg DeLaval’s tenure as head coach. The trio combined for over 100 tackles and accounted for seven of Toronto’s 18 sacks in 2009. As a defensive back, Batchelor is a two-time OUA allstar. He led the team and was ranked seventh in the OUA with 50 solo tackles in 2009. He, along with the team’s interception leader Kyle Kennedy, veteran Willie Sharpe and University of Waterloo transfer Hugo Lopez, solidify the Blues defensive backfield. DeSouza, who had a breakout year in 2009 ranking second on the team with 36 solo tackles, returns and is eager to lead Toronto’s linebackers. He will be joined by veterans Andrii Feshanets and Adam Fehler as well as newcomers Chris Johnson and Nicholas Witczak. Standing at 6-foot-7, 300 pounds, Evans had a teamhigh four sacks last season and will be key to stopping the opposition’s ground game. He’ll also look to fellow defensive linemen Joe Cappiello, Abbey Olusoga and rookies James Bodanis and Zack Lukings for support up front.

Offence With new leadership emerging and a strong recruiting class, DeLaval will turn to quarterback Andrew Gillis to steer the ship in 2010. The fourth-year veteran is a versatile pivot who led the team with 228 rushing yards, while recording 491 passing yards in 2009. The Blues lose a solid receiver in Drew Meerveld, who finished seventh in the province with 541 receiving yards last year but look to fill the void with third-year receivers Jonathan Wright and Michael Prempeh. In 2009, Wright led the team with five touchdowns and 30 points and also

12

had a team-high 560 all-purpose yards. Prempeh returns this year after an injury-riddled 2009. He had an impressive showing at the 2010 East West Bowl and has continued to impress at training camp. U of T coaches hope that second-year receiver Sebastian Magalas and rookie Alex Pierzchalski will also be prime targets for Gillis in 2010. Fourth-year running back Walter Cariazo and first-year standout Aaron Milton will lead one of the largest groups of running backs that the Blues have had at camp in recent years. Cariazo was ranked second on the team with 227 rushing yards last season. University of Toledo transfer Chris Weiland will also be counted on to showcase his skills on the field. With the loss of 6-foot-5 offensive lineman Chris Kowalczuk to the CFL, Josh Gibbs and centre Mario Tedesco will be called upon to lead a much improved, but young offensive line. They will look to Ross Asaro, Corey Hafezi and first-year offensive tackles Aaron Wheaton and Connor Hanak to come up big for the Blues offence.

Special Teams Toronto has added much-needed depth to its punting and kicking units. Former X-Men, Kyle Chisholm, joins thirdyear place kicker Andrew Lomasney. While at St. FX, Chisholm led the AUS with a 39-yard punting average and recorded a season-high 74-yard punt at Saint Mary’s on Oct 24, 2008. In his first CIS game, Lomasney booted the gamewinning field goal that ended the Varsity Blues recordbreaking 49-game losing streak on September 1, 2008 vs. Waterloo. He hit 5-of-9 field goals in 2009 – his longest was 40 yards at McMaster on Oct. 8.

2009 Year in Review September 7, 2009 Laurier Golden Hawks 36, Varsity Blues 0 Varsity Centre

Third-year running back Michael Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) rushed for three touchdowns and 160 yards while teammate Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) had five receptions for 134 yards to lead the visiting Hawks to a Labour Day victory. When asked about battling Montoya with three and sometimes four tacklers, Blues head coach Greg DeLaval could only comment; “Yeah, he steamrolled us. We definitely lost the physical battle today.” After the Blues conceded a safety in the first quarter, Montoya (Burlington, Ont.) would find the end zone three times, scoring on runs of 11, nine, and six yards. Add his scores to a Chris Mamo’s (London, Ont.) 24-yard field goal and the Golden Hawks had a 26-0 lead going into halftime. Laurier quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) completed a 37-yard pass to Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) at 11:15 in the third quarter for the fourth touchdown of the night. Thompson was 8-of-15 for 184 yards and one touchdown. Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the Golden Hawk’s defence with five tackles and one sack. Despite the lack of scoring, the home team showed good promise, threw in a variety of looks and showed some defensive prowess - Varsity Blues player of the game, Willie Sharpe (Renfrew, Ont.) had five tackles, blocked a field goal and averaged 30 yards per punt. “Every game is about adjustments,” said DeLaval. “We weren’t able to run the ball early in the game so we went to the pass but we’d like to establish the run. Running the football is going to control the clock and keep the other team’s offence on the sidelines so we’re going to find a way to run the football whether it’s our running back, quarterback or receiver.” Wilkerson DeSouza (Mississauga, Ont.) and Kyle Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) totalled eight tackles apiece to lead Toronto. Fourth-year quarterback Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.) completed seven passes for 102 yards and fifth-year transfer Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) went 6-for-9 for 46 yards. 2009 Year in Review September 12, 2009 Windsor Lancers 30, Varsity Blues 3 University of Windsor Stadium

Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) got the Blues on the board, notching a 36-yard field goal in the final minute of the game to break up the Windsor shutout. For the Lancers, the running tandem of Paul Lefaive (Markham, Ont.) and Kamar Anglin (Newmarket, Ont.) would be the Blues nemesis on this evening. Lefaive finished with an impressive 148 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown, while Anglin added 53 yards on the ground with a pair of touchdowns. The ‘big play’ would also prove costly for Toronto as Windsor quarterback Dan Carloni (Kleinburg, Ont.) connected on a 79-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Brescacin (Tecumseh, Ont.) on his second throw of the game to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter didn’t see any scoring until the 2:55 mark when Anglin punched in his first TD from six yards out to put the Lancers up 14-0 at the end of the first half. Toronto conceded a touchback halfway through the third, giving the hosts a 16-0 lead and the only score in the quarter. Lefaive continued his dominating rushing performance in the fourth with a 44-yard dash to the end zone to put the game out of reach, 23-0, for the Varsity Blues. The Lancers would add the final dagger as Carloni led the Windsor offence on a 40-yard charge, capped off by a two-yard run by Anglin for his second touchdown of the night. Blues starting quarterback Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.) was 3-of-9 for 21 yards, while back-up quarterback Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) faired a little better, completing 14 of 26 passes for 174 yards. Rookie receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) caught nine passes for 96 yards to lead the Blues. Lancer quarterback Dan Carloni finished 7-of-13 passing for 163 yards and one touchdown. 2009 Year in Review September 18, 2009 Guelph Gryphons 53, Varsity Blues 25 Varsity Centre

Nick Fitzgibbon’s 150 yards rushing and four second-half touchdowns would ultimately be the demise of the Blues. Zachary Hord (Barry, Ont.) recovered a George Gretes’ (Toronto) fumble in the end zone for the Blues first touchdown of the 2009 season. This, following a Rob Maver (Brampton, Ont.) 24-yard field goal and a Gryphons safety, left Toronto with a 7-5 lead after the first 15 min. Maver’s second field goal of the game came with 2:36 remaining in the half to give Guelph a slim 9-7 lead. The second half would prove to be a much different story and both teams went on an offensive surge. Fitzgibbon capped off Guelph’s opening drive of the third quarter with a 32-yard run down the left sideline. Toronto responded with a solid seven play, 83-yard drive of their own that finished when Gretes took a direct snap and scored on a 1-yard carry. “We have to play four quarters that’s something that we have to work on and that the coach mentioned in the locker room just now,” said Blues player of the game Andrew Gillis. “We have to stay in the game for 60 minutes and we can’t take any time off.” Dave Honig (Sarnia) rounded out the Gryphons scoring in the third quarter with a 21-yard reception with 1:38 left to put Guelph up 25-14. With three more runs of 12, three and four yards respectively, Fitzgibbon, the fourth-year running back from Puslinch, Ont., would put the game out of reach despite the Blues valiant effort to keep up with high-scoring pace. Blues kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) nailed a 32-yard field goal and back-up quarterback Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) hit Jonathan Wright (Belleville, Ont.) with a beautiful 64-yard pass for Toronto’s third touchdown of the night. 2009 Year in Review September 25, 2009 Ottawa Gee-Gees 35, Varsity Blues 15 Varsity Centre

Ottawa’s Cyril Adjeitey’s 162 receiving yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns would spoil the Blues minor football night celebrations. Adjeitey (Ghana) scored two touchdowns on 71- and 66-yard receptions, respectively, in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the hometown squad. For the second time in as many weeks the Blues came out strong, stopping the Gee-Gees on every occasion in the first quarter. They then took an early lead when second-year kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) knocked in a 15-yard field goal to put the home team up 3-0 with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter. Ottawa replied with two Matt Falvo field goals to take the lead midway through the second quarter, and with two minutes remaining in the half, fourth-year Ottawa running back Matt Todd (Ottawa) scored the first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard carry into the end zone. Toronto answered back in the dying seconds of the first half as quarterback Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.) connected with first-year slotback Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) for his first touchdown pass of the season, a 30-yard strike, to get the Blues to within six (15-9) going into halftime. Falvo (Welland, Ont.) would add his third and fourth field goals in the third quarter to help his team build a 21-9 lead heading into the final frame. With the Gee-Gees up 35-9, Toronto scored its second touchdown of the game when Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) tossed a beautiful 83-yard touchdown pass to rookie Ben Sharpe (Renfrew, Ont.), who tippy-toed down the sideline for six with 2:20 remaining in the game. Things got interesting when Toronto’s Andrii Feshanets (Mississauga, Ont.) recovered Lomansney’s on-side kick to put the Blues within striking distance. However, the drive would stall at Ottawa’s 27-yard line and the Blues would turn the ball over on downs with under a minute left in the contest. 2009 Year in Review October 3, 2009 Varsity Blues 45, York Lions 27 York Stadium, Toronto In his first start of the season, Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) hit 20-of-31 for 322 yards, completing passes of 12, 32 and 80 yards to Wright (Belleville, Ont.). The fifth-year pivot also ran four times for 11 yards and a touchdown. Jonathan Wright, a second-year physical education and health major, had a career-high 10 catches, 187 yards, to lead all players, as well as a the longest reception of his career (80 yards). In similar fashion to their last two contests, the Varsity Blues jumped out of the gates in a hurry, scoring three TDs on their first three possessions of the first quarter. Shrubb drove his squad 46 yards on the first drive, culminating with Wright’s first touchdown reception. Toronto successfully completed an on-side kick to give themselves great starting position and again, Shrubb led his troops four-play, 42-yard drive, finishing with a 32-yard pass and catch to Wright. The Blues defence would make another stand, giving the offence another shot at the end zone from York’s side of half. This ended with Shrubb keeping the ball on a one-yard quarterback sneak to put Toronto up 21-0. Kicker Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) added a field goal at the end of the first 15 minutes of play to give Toronto a 24-0 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Blues kick-returner Matt Morris (Scarborough, Ont.) received a punt and ran it back 67 yards for the fourth Toronto touchdown of the half. York managed to put a dent in the Blues armour and get on the board late in the second quarter as the Blues took a 31-7 lead into halftime. Both teams exchanged majors in the third quarter. The Lions Jason Marshall (Innisfil, Ont.) returned a punt 70 yards, before first-year quarterback Jordan Scheltgen (Surrey, B.C.) scored his first touchdown of his university career on a one-yard run to give his team a 38-14 lead. York’s QB Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) and wide receiver Johnny Peyton (Dade City, Fla.) hooked up just minutes into the fourth to give the Lions a glimpse of hope, however 27 seconds later, Shrubb and Wright put the nail in the coffin with a beautiful 80-yard major to put the game out of reach. York added one more Coutu-Peyton touchdown but it wouldn’t be enough on this afternoon as the Blues win their second consecutive Argo Cup by a score of 45-27. 2009 Year in Review October 8, 2009 McMaster Marauders 21, Varsity Blues 3 Ron Joyce Stadium, Hamilton

It was the tale of two halves and a case of missed opportunities as Toronto held the explosive McMaster offence to 80 yards rushing and only 105 yards receiving through 11 minutes of action in the first half, however, they were unable to contain last week’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) offensive player of the week, quarterback Kyle Quinlan (South Woodsley, Ont.), and company in the final two quarters. The Blues struck first when Andrew Lomasney (Toronto) hit a career-long 40-yard field goal at the 7:32 mark of the opening quarter to give the visitors an early 3-0 advantage. The Varsity defence did its part and kept Quinlan off balance throughout most of the first quarter, leading to several two-and-out situations and a Matt Morris (Scarborough, Ont.) interception. His 19-yard return gave the Blues great field position with under two minutes left in the opening frame. The end result was not as favourable as Lomasney missed his second field goal attempt from 33 yards out. The Marauders’ offence moved the ball more effectively in the second quarter. A nine play, three minute drive stalled inside the red zone, setting up an Andrew Waugh (Perth, Ont.) 26-yard chip shot to pull the home team even at 3-3. The game’s turning point occurred late in the first half as the Blues defensive pressure had the Marauders punting from their end zone. Despite a valiant attempt by Blues all-star defensive back Derek Batchelor to block a Mac punt; he ultimately was penalized for roughing the kicker, giving the Marauders an automatic first down and new life. A 13-play McMaster drive ensued in the final 2:20 and led to Andrew Waugh’s second field goal of the half, giving Mac a 6-3 at halftime. The momentum swung one last time early in the third when Quinlan connected on a 51-yard passing play to runningback Jordan Kozina (Brantford, Ont) at the nine minute mark. The reception, set up a 10-yard rushing touchdown from McMaster runningback, Joey Netmet (Burlington, Ont) to put the Marauders up 13-3 and in control of the game. University of Toronto quarterback, Jansen, Shrubb (Toronto) passed for 250 yards on 20 completions for Blues. His favourite target on the night was veteran receiver Drew Meerveld (Guelph, Ont) who had 11 receptions for a new career-high 153 yards to lead all players. Meerveld led the OUA in receptions with 28 on the season coming into the game. Team Statistics First Downs Rushing Passing Losses Net offence Passes made-tried-int. 2009 Year in Review October 17, 2000 Waterloo Warriors 30, Varsity Blues 7 Varsity Centre

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football fell 30-7 to the visiting Waterloo Warriors in their final home game of the season on Saturday, October 17 at Varsity Centre. Fourth-year quarterback Evan Martin threw three touchdowns in each of the first three quarters to lead the Warriors. The Kitchener Ont. native was 21-of-29 for 348 yards in the air and also ran seven times for 24 yards. The opening drive of the game looked promising for the Warriors until veteran Blues defensive back Kyle Kennedy (Metcalfe, Ont.) intercepted a Martin passing attempt in the end zone. The rest of the first quarter remained scoreless until a Martin 25-yard shuffle pass to first-year running back Mike Socholotiuk (Waterford, Ont.) with 1:50 left broke the deadlock. Toronto quickly answered in the opening minutes of the second quarter when starting quarterback Jansen Shrubb (Toronto) found a wide open Jonathan Wright (Belleville, Ont.) in the end zone to knot the game at seven. With Waterloo up 8-7, Toronto drove the length of the field but was stopped inches short on a third down attempt inside the Warriors six-yard line. The turnover proved costly as the visitors turned the tides on the Blues and took the ball back down the field, scoring their second major on a 35 yard pass-and-catch from Martin to Socholotiuk. “I would have to say that the missed first down [deep in their end] was probably the turning point in the game,” said Toronto head coach Greg DeLaval. “Waterloo takes the ball back down the field and scores and I don’t think that we ever recovered emotionally.” Dennis McPhee’s team would tack on a 25-yard field and take an 18-7 into halftime. Toronto didn’t have an answer in the second half as the Warriors added another Martin touchdown, this time to Sean Cowie (Dundas, Ont.), a David Sevigny (Peterborough, Ont.) 23-yard field goal as well as a Blues conceded safety to end the game 30-7. 2009 Year in Review October 24, 2009 Western Mustangs 47, Varsity Blues 0 TD Waterhouse Stadium, London

Western quarterback Michael Faulds (Eden Mills, Ont.) became the all-time CIS career passing leader, finishing his five-year career with 10,811 career yards. He also set the record for CIS single-season passing at 3,033 yards and moves to fifth place in the CIS record book for passing yards in a game with a 550-yard outing. The fifth-year Master’s of kinesiology student completed 39 of 52 passes with two touchdowns. He was 11 yards shy of the OUA single-game mark held by Queen’s Tommy Dennison (561 yards). The Blues started the game with an impressive opening drive. Using two quarterbacks, first-year pivot Jordan Scheltgen and third-year veteran Andrew Gillis, the Blues marched 49 yards, stalling at the Western thirty and forcing a Willie Sharpe (Ottawa) punt. Western opened the scoring on a seven-yard Ben Roberts (London, Ont.) run. A clutch 31-yard catch from Zach Bull got the ball inside the 10-yard line to set up the score. Bull finished with nine catches for 129 yards. Toronto conceded a safety to give Western a 9-0 lead and on Mustang possession, Faulds drove his squad 75 yards in three plays to give the home team a 16-0 lead after the opening quarter and they didn’t look back. In the third quarter, Faulds ran in the ball 21-yards to make it 30-0, and Wheeler booted a 26-yard field goal to make it 33-0. Roberts scored his second major of the day, running in from 12-yards out to make it 40-0, late in the third quarter, and Kenny Eansor (London, Ont.) scored on a 19-yard run with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth to make it 47-0. Third-year engineering student, Willie Sharpe (Renfrew, Ont.) led the Blues defensively with eight solo tackles, two assisted tackles, a forced fumble and a sack. First-year linebacker Elbron Barzegar (Mississauga, Ont.) amassed seven tackles, two assisted tackles and had another of the Blues four sacks on the day.

Varsity Blues Record Manual A Brief History of Varsity Blues Football 2010 marks the 133rd year of football at the University of Toronto. It has been a remarkable history that includes a long list of football firsts, as well as four Grey Cup, two Vanier Cup and 25 Yates Cup championships. The earliest documented game of "football" on the U of T campus occurred 145 years ago, on November 9, 1861, though in the early years the game ran under uniquely local rules that required players to bounce the ball. It was in 1877 that the rules of rugby were introduced to U of T by J.H. Mayne Campbell, giving birth to the modern Varsity Blues football team. Over the next century, the rules of rugby in Canada gradually evolved into the modern game of Canadian football. Most of Varsity’s early opponents were club teams such as the Hamilton Tigers and the Toronto Argonauts. U of T’s first interuniversity game was played in 1879 in Detroit against the University of Michigan, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw. Varsity’s first Canadian university contest was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the U of T front campus. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930s. Previously, nicknames were not always customary for university teams and references such as ‘The Big Blue’, ‘The Blue and White’ and ‘The Varsity Blue’ appeared interchangeably. Official interuniversity competition began in 1898, with Varsity capturing the inaugural Yates Cup, and 10 of the first 17 championships. Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 through 1911; with the latter three being best known as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season. U of T made their final Grey Cup appearance in 1926, dropping a 10-7 decision to the Ottawa Rough Riders. In the end, Varsity claimed four Grey Cup titles in all ('09,'10,'11,'20). Through the 1920s and 30s U of T captured six Yates Cups, and would add six more before 1970. However, it was in the early 50s that U of T football attracted its largest crowds. Immediately following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21, 1950. If one team stands out at U of T, it would be the 1958 squad. The team was coached by Dalt White, and is regarded by many as the Varsity Blues’ strongest ever. They averaged almost 40 points a game and remain the only U of T football team to go undefeated and untied since the 1910 squad. Seven years later, White’s final season on the sidelines, the Varsity Blues claimed another first, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup championship by a 14-7 score over the University of Alberta. The 1965 team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Meanwhile, since 1965 the Varsity Blues have captured five Yates Cup titles. The Varsity Blues claimed their second Vanier Cup in 1993 under the tutelage of head coach Bob Laycoe. In a thrilling final, Glenn McCausland returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, a Vanier Cup record that still stands today, as the Varsity Blues slipped past the University of Calgary 3734.

Vanier Cup I - 20 November 1965 Varsity Blues 14, Alberta Golden Bears 7 Varsity Stadium, Toronto

In 1965, the Canadian Save the Children Fund inaugurated the Vanier Cup as an invitational post-season bowl game. As the 1965 Yates Cup champions the Blues were invited to play against the Western Conference champion Alberta Golden Bears. Game day arrived, and there was a steady downpour in near-freezing temperature, not the most conducive conditions to entice a crowd. Passing was virtually a write-off in such conditions, both teams having to rely heavily on the running game. Toronto scored a rouge 12:50 into the game on a missed 32-yard field goal, breaking the initial deadlock. Alberta's first points came 3:55 into the second quarter with the defence intercepting Taylor's pass, and running it 58 yards for the touchdown. The Blues blocked the convert, but Alberta made the score 7-1 with a single on and 18-yard missed field goal at 10:11 in the same quarter. Much of the third quarter entailed both teams punting back and forth, with little being accomplished. On the final play of the quarter, Taylor pulled off what is still one of the strangest successful plays in Vanier history. He handed off to Gerry Sternberg, who gave the ball to Jim Ware, who in turn lateraled back to Taylor. While the whole of the Golden Bears defence scurried in bewilderment, Taylor fired a 23-yard strike to Mike Eben, alone in the end zone. The convert gave Varsity an 8-7 lead, which Taylor increased to 14-7 on a 7-yard run on the final play of the game, clinching the first Vanier Cup title for the Varsity Blues. Sternberg was given the Teddy Morris Memorial Trophy as outstanding player of the game, rushing for 85 yards. In a ceremony in the spring of 1966, Governor General Georges Vanier presented the trophy bearing his name to the Blues at the annual Athletic Banquet, putting the final glory on one of the finest Varsity Blues football teams. The entire 1965 football team was later inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Varsity Blues Record Manual Vanier Cup XXIX 20 November 1993 Varsity Blues 37, Calgary Dinosaurs 34 SkyDome, Toronto The Varsity Blues captured the 29th Vanier Cup championship in a game to be remembered. Diminutive Glenn McCausland scored on an 81-yard punt return, a Vanier Cup record, to pace Toronto to an exciting 37-34 victory over the Calgary Dinosaurs. Calgary kicker Bruce Parsons could have sent the game into overtime with 10 seconds remaining, but his 22-yard field goal attempt was blocked by the Blues' John Raposo. The Blues took a 23-7 lead in the third quarter, but Calgary rallied to make it 23-21. It was then that McCausland, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, took matters into his own hands. The five-foot-six, 165-pound star made a scintillating punt return 28 seconds into the fourth frame for a touchdown. Toronto linebacker Barry McCamus then put the Blues ahead 37-21 at 3:29 when he scored on a 22-yard interception return. Calgary again rallied, thanks to Chris Lewis' one-yard touchdown run at 7:30 and John Kalin's 13-yard scoring strike to James Buchanan at 12:09. These scores cut Toronto's lead to 37-34. Calgary got the ball at its 45-yard line with less than a minute remaining after a surprising third-down Toronto gamble failed. Kalin guided Calgary to the Toronto 15 prior to Raposo's block. The win was Toronto’s first Vanier Cup title since 1965. SCORING Calgary Toronto
