MARC
ARSENEAU
Assistant Coach Marc Arseneau was the Varsity Blues 2004 team captain and led the Blues to an unprecedented 13th OUA championship title. That year, he led both the OUA and CIS in points per set and was among the top two in every other statistical category. Individually, Marc was a starter for Team Canada at the 2003 World University Games in South Korea. He was a four-time OUA all-star, a two-time CIS all-Canadian and was named the 2004 Male T-Holder’s athlete of the year. He was invited to the national A team tryouts and participated in an Olympic qualifying event in Japan in 2003.

The Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team looks to improve upon their 10th place finish as six fresh faces join nine returning players under the guidance of interim head coach John Barrett. “We look to be an exciting, competitive team with our main goal being the playoffs,” said Barrett. “Our everyday goal is slow, steady improvement. A returning core of contributing players will ensure a tenacious attitude and an ability to play a high-paced brand of volleyball.” With the loss of key veterans Adam Palmer and Deagan McDonald, who both join Barrett as assistant coaches this season, the Blues will look to rightside hitter Mitchell Woodside to provide leadership to this young squad. The Clyde River P.E.I., native is the only fourth-year player on the roster. Sophomore leftside hitters Jake Dysselhof and Matthew Vares are coming off stellar rookie campaigns and will be significant contributors to Toronto’s success this season. Dysselhof led the team with an average of 2.95 kills, while also recording 1.73 digs per set last season. The 2010-11 U of T male rookie of the year nominee led the OUA and ranked second in the CIS with 726 total attacks in 2010-11. A native of Scarborough, Ont., Matthew Vares was second on the team with 2.19 kills per set and will look to improve those numbers this year. Michael Denton returns and assumes the role of starting libero in 2011-12. The second-year kinesiology major led the team with 2.34 digs per set last season. First-year players Nathaniel Virgo and Trevor Grant bring some fresh talent to the team. Standing at 6-foot-5, Virgo is a versatile player who will see action in the middle or rightside. Grant, another 6-foot-5 middle, joins the Blues fresh off a successful season at Port Perry H.S., where he was named the team’s most valuable player.

After losing former OUA most valuable player and multiple all-star Steven Kung, the Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team concluded their 2010-11 campaign with a 10th place finish in the conference. The Blues began the season with a 2-2 record but would go on a seven-game losing slide that crippled their chances of making the playoffs. However, a thrilling five-set win against the rival York Lions on Jan. 16 gave Toronto some life and they would come back a week later to triumph over the Laurier Golden Hawks at home, pulling them within reach of another trip to the OUA postseason. Unfortunately, another four straight losses against some tough competition at the end of the season dropped the Blues out of contention. Jake Dysselhof led Toronto with 3.14 points per game, putting together a solid rookie campaign while veteran Adam Palmer also had a strong season to round out his three-year stint with the Blues, finishing with 19 aces and a team-high 0.439 kill percentage.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, men’s volleyball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team has achieved an unparalleled level of success and has become the standard for achievement in OUA men’s volleyball. The Varsity Blues have won eight of the past 17 OUA championships and a total of 13 OUA banners in the last 27 years. The men’s volleyball program at the University of Toronto has a rich history that includes capturing the first two OUA men’s volleyball championships in 1966 and 1967. In fact, today the OUA men’s volleyball championship team receives the Forsyth Memorial Trophy, which was first awarded in 1968 and is named after U of T alumnus, the late Jim Forsyth was killed in an automobile accident in February of 1968. The Varsity Blues volleyball program routinely attracts some of the best high school student-athletes. 31 Blues players have been selected as OUA all-stars a total of 76 times since 1979. 11 of those athletes have been named to the CIS all-Canadian team on 23 occasions since 1983. Former Varsity Blues players have also represented Canada internationally both indoors and on the beach. 1992 CIS Player of the Year
Marc Dunn was a member of Canada’s national indoor team. Marc teamed up with former Blues all-Canadian, national team member and current Varsity Blues head coach Ed Drakich to represent Canada at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in beach volleyball. Former Varsity Blues all-Canadian Jeff Chung represented Canada from 1994 to 1998. Dustin Reid — the former U of T player who is presently the technical director for Ontario Volleyball — competed with Canada’s national team in 1994. Varsity Blues players are exceptional students and outstanding leaders in their community. In fact, Varsity Blues players have earned numerous academic all-Canadian awards and graduates of the program have gone on to become physicians, teachers, engineers, accountants, pharmacists, researchers, and other professionals. The Varsity Blues coaching and support staff has a range of expertise that makes them among the best in the country. In his first two seasons at the helm, former all-Canadian and Olympian Ed Drakich, has surrounded himself with a great support staff including former all-Canadian and Olympian John Barrett and accomplished OCAA volleyball player Derek Walker. Barrett has since then taken over as the Blues interim bench boss.
