N O S SEA

Entering her 23rd season as the Varsity Blues bench boss, women’s volleyball head coach Kristine Drakich is excited for the upcoming season and will look for her 22nd OUA Final Four appearance in 2011-12. “We are new team and we are really taking advantage of every minute we have training and competing together and we get better every day,” commented Drakich. “I am confident we will create many opportunities to be very competitive this season.” The Blues boast four student-athletes that were members of the 2009-10 OUA championship team as well a crop of new highly experienced players that will look to better Toronto’s fifth-place finish last season. With the loss of OUA all-star Karlee Diesing, fourth-year twin sisters Shannon and Katrina Rossall and third-year setter Malena Rapaport will be the most experienced when it comes to training and competition at the CIS level. Shannon continues to be strong at the net in the middle, while Katrina will play both middle and libero this season and creates a strong defensive presence on the court. Rapaport will be relied on to generate offensive opportunities this season. Second-year player Sarah Chapin brings a quiet determination to the court once again and provides solid net play and tough serving. After a one-year hiatus from indoor volleyball, Rebecca Crosier returns to the floor and will bring a great defensive presence, while adding depth to the outside hitting position. Crosier took the 2010-11 season off to pursue beach volleyball training full time. Third-year player Alexandra Hudson and sophomore Charlotte Sider are coming off a successful summer beach season, having won both provincial and Canadian under-21 championship titles. The duo is certain to carry their beach success over to the gym this season. The Blues welcome five fresh faces to their roster this season. Leftside hitter Denise Wooding is sure to make an impact this season. The North Vancouver native won a silver medal at the Western Canada Games and the under-18 Canadian national beach championships. Fellow Western Canadian Jennifer Neilson is a second-year transfer student who will join the Blues later in the season. She is a true competitor and brings power to the right side of the court. Windsor, Ont., native Bojana Radan has an incredible pursuit of the ball and will be valuable in the middle position, while Emily Kawaguchi will add strength defensively to the Blues line-up. Kawaguchi also competed at the under-19 world beach championships this past summer. Devan O’Connor is a second-year transfer from the Laurier Golden Hawks. She is a versatile player who can contribute in different a variety of different positions.

With the loss of four OUA all-stars who led them to an OUA banner in 2009-10, Toronto came into the 201011 season with more than half its roster filled with rookies, along with OUA all-star Karlee Diesing. As a result the women struggled out of the gate, losing their first seven games of the regular season. However, the Blues managed to turn things around before the holiday break, sweeping Lakehead on the road in Thunder Bay, Ont., which started a four-game win streak that put them back in playoff contention come the New Year. Unfortunately, the women could only manage one win in the second half of the campaign and came up just short of making the post-season. Coquitlam, B.C. native Diesing was named an OUA second team all-star for the second consecutive season after leading the Blues with 125 kills in 12 matches played.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s volleyball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto’s women’s volleyball program has achieved enviable success. It is a nationally competitive program that has captured seven Ontario championship titles. Blues volleyball has also been the most consistently successful program as the Blues have advanced to the OUA final four every year for the past 22 years. U of T is one of the only universities to integrate beach volleyball and volleyball training. Varsity Blues volleyball players have been very successful at the provincial, national and international beach volleyball levels - currently three former players, Sarah Pothaar, Rebecca Moskowitz and Asta Baltakys, are representing Canada on the World Tour. Since 1994, at least 13 Varsity Blues players have competed for Canada on the FIVB World Tour, at World Beach Championships, at the World University Beach Championships and at the Pan American Games.

The Varsity Blues volleyball program attracts talented athletes who are interested in learning and advancing their game. Many Varsity Blues players have been named to all-Ontario and all-Canadian teams and have represented Canada at international competitions in both indoor and beach volleyball. The 1968-69 women’s volleyball team dominated university competition in eastern Canada. Undefeated in regular season play, the 1968-69 Blues continued their winning streak into the playoffs, earning the league championship and the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union (WIAU) title. Coached by Marjory Shedd, the team was a dynamic group of outstanding talent, including Lois Kennedy - who was also a member of Canada’s national team. Six of the Blues players competed on the provincial team that won gold at the first Canada Games in 1967. Team members include: Jenny (Karstoff) Stoanka Allen, 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, Julia (Kucharachuk) Andruchiw, Jennifer (English) Fallis, Lida (Syrotynsky) Hoffmann, Lois Kennedy, Ruth (Unger) Morgan, Birgitte Nielsen-Worrall, Lynette (Bibby) Pasma, Luba (Olesnycky) Rabbel (captain), Lydia (Eliashevsky) Replansky, Mari Sagi, Jane (Guenther) Williams and Marjory Shedd (head coach).

The Varsity Blues coaching and support staff has a range of expertise that makes them among the best in the country. Head coach Kristine Drakich leads the women’s Varsity Blues volleyball program and ensures the quality of the staff. Kristine is a NCCP high performance coach who has been recognized for her coaching (indoor and beach volleyball) both provincially and nationally. She has over 10 years of international volleyball playing experience (five years indoor and five years beach volleyball). A member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame since 1970, Marjory Shedd, a recent inductee to the Varsity Blues Hall of Fame, coached at U of T for 28 years (1964-91) and guided the Blues to seven league gold medals in volleyball, plus five Ontario gold medals and seven silver medals in badminton. Known as “Canada’s Lady of Badminton,” Marjory won 44 provincial and 24 national titles, including six consecutive triple crowns. She represented Canada in six Uber Cup competitions, including the first International Women’s Uber Cup in 1956-57. She also played on national championships teams in both basketball and volleyball, and represented Canada in volleyball at the 1967 Pan-American Games.
