Head Coach & Manager of Football Operations After a stint as U of T’s linebackers coach in 2008, Gary returns to the Blues sidelines with over 20 years of coaching experience under his belt. The native of Claremont, California, got his start as the head coach of the Junior Varsity football team at his alma mater, Claremont H.S. Gary has been a guiding influence in the Mississauga Football League since 1995 and most recently became the head coach of the Warriors rep football team in 2005, leading them to an Ontario Varsity Football League (OVFL) Junior Varsity championship in 2008. As an athlete, Gary received a scholarship to California State University, Fullerton, where he was the captain of the football team and won an Iron Man award in 1981. He signed as a free agent with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams in 1982 and then headed north a year later, playing four years with the Hamilton Tiger Cats and winning the Grey Cup in 1986.

Defensive Coordinator

An Etobicoke, Ont. native, John Engel joined the Blues as the full-time assistant coach in 2009, having spent three years prior to that as offensive coordinator.

A native of Brampton, Ontario, Carter was the fourth overall pick of the Toronto Argonauts in the 2000 CFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at the University of Northern Illinois. He was named one of the captains in his senior year with the Huskies and voted the team’s defensive MVP that season.

John began his coaching career close to home with the Ontario Varsity Football League’s Etobicoke Eagles. He took on several roles during his stint with the Eagles, including offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator, head coach and director of football. In 2005, Engel was the offensive coordinator for Team Central Ontario, helping guide them to a second-place finish at the Canada Cup tournament.

Known as one of the hardest hitters in the league during his eight-year professional career, Carter played both outside linebacker and safety and made four different stops (Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa and Winnipeg) before officially retiring in 2008.

As a player, Engel was team captain of the 2002 York University Yeomen who won their first playoff game in school history. He returned to his alma mater after graduation as an assistant receivers coach.

After a year as Toronto’s defensive backs coach, Carter went on to guest coach with the Hamilton Tiger Cats and became the defensive coordinator of the OVFL’s Etobicoke Eagles in 2010. He helped the squad through the playoff run that ended with a loss in the Wettges regional championship game.

Special Teams

Wilkerson DeSouza, Willie Sharpe and Adam Fehler are three big pieces to Toronto’s defensive unti in 2011. With the addition of defensive coordinator Donnavan Carter, they will need to lead the on-field charge and execute the new scheme.

Fifth-year quarterback Andrew Gillis will once again steer the ship in 2011. A threeyear starter as the team’s pivot, Gillis has continued to improve each year under the guidance of offensive coordinator John Engel. He nearly tripled his 2009 numbers last season, throwing for 1304 yards and earned OUA and CIS offensive player of the week honours after recording a career-high 343 passing yards in Toronto’s victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Oct. 2.

The Blues special teams unit led the CIS

Fourth-year veteran Michael Prempeh leads a versatile receiving corps this season. The Toronto native returned from injury in 2010 and picked up where he left off, leading the team with 332 receiving yards and three touchdowns. The East-West all-star will be joined by fifth-year veterans Rolli Adenmosun and Sebastian Magalas as well as sophomores Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass.

goals in 2010 – his longest was 30 yards vs.

The OUA’s leading tackler in 2010, DeSouza is coming off a breakout season, where he totalled 62 solo tackles, two sacks and one interception. Fellow fourth-year linebacker Kevin Asare returned to fine form last year after a season-ending injury in 2009, while Elbron Barzegar, Broc Elliott and rookie Darnell Girard round out Toronto’s second line of defence. Willie Sharpe moves from defensive back to safety this season. He recorded 27 solo tackles and two pass breakups in 2010. With the loss of four-time OUA all-star Derek Batchelor, first-year head coach Greg Gary looks to a young, talented core of defensive backs to handle Toronto’s pass coverage and run support. Trevor Harvey and Marco Rodrigues lead the Blues secondary, with transfer Dorian Munroe and rookie Jaiden McBride expected to contribute significantly to this unit. Fehler is also coming off a stellar year and is projected to lead the defensive line this season. He was named the OUA’s defensive player of the week after recording seven tackles, two sacks, one interception and one pass breakup versus York in 2010. Fehler will be joined by a long list of big bodies, including James Bodanis and Everton Williams, which comprises the deepest defensive corps that U of T has seen in recent years.

with six punt blocks in 2010. In only his first season, Chris Johnson became a solid contributor on the special teams coverage, leading the CIS with two blocked punts. Milton chipped in with an impressive 39.7 yard punting average, while Prempeh ranked fourth in the OUA with an average of nine yards per punt return. Fourth-year place kicker Andrew Lomasney hit 7-of-9 field Ottawa on Oct. 2.

Coming off a stellar rookie campaign, Aaron Milton is sure to hit the ground running on Sept. 5. The Whitby, Ont., native led the team in rushing yards last season and tied the Varsity Blues record for longest rush with a 105-yard touchdown versus Ottawa. At 6-foot-5, 296 pounds, Josh Gibbs is the backbone of a much improved offensive line. He, along with veterans Patrick Yan and Mario Tedesco, will look to Aaron Wheaton and Jesse Raycroft to step in and come up big for a surging Blues offence.

The Varsity Blues football program continued its rebuilding process with its most successful season in a decade. The Blues went 3-5 in 2010 and were one win away from clinching their first post-season berth since 1995. In their opening contest of the fall, the Blues were narrowly beaten 15-13 on a late field goal by the Guelph Gryphons. A 24-19 win over the York Lions on September 18 was followed up by their best performance of the season against the then No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Blues defeated Ottawa 40-35, marking their first win against the Gee-Gees since 1974 and the team’s first victory against a nationally-ranked squad since 1997. Andrew Gillis, who was named CIS offensive player of the week, was incredible, going 28-for-45 and throwing for a career-high 343 yards and two touchdowns. Halfback Derek Batchelor was named an OUA second team all-star after leading the Blues with three interceptions and 41.5 tackles in 2010. Linebacker Wilkerson DeSouze led the OUA with 62 solo tackles in eight games.

September 1, 2010 Guelph Gryphons 15, Toronto Varsity Blues 13 Alumni Stadium

Mike Fortino’s 16-yard field goal with six seconds remaining would prove to be U of T’s demise as the Varsity Blues football team fell 15-13 to the host Guelph Gryphons in their 2010 season opener on Wednesday, September 1 at Alumni Stadium. Despite two punt blocks in the second quarter to take the lead into halftime, the Blues could not hold on for the win on this day. U of T struggled to penetrate the defence, amassing only 50 rushing yards to Guelph’s 192 and going 0-for-3 on red zone scoring chances. Toronto came out slow and the home squad quickly took advantage when quarterback Chris Rossetti scooped up a Nick Fitzgibbon flick pass and ran it to the end zone for the 30-yard touchdown reception. Down 9-0 after conceding a safety in the second quarter, U of T’s special teams unit began to rally the troops. Third-year linebacker Taylor Shergold (Toronto) blocked and recovered Evan Short’s punt to set up a 19-yard field goal by Andrew Lomasney (Toronto, Ont., North Toronto C.I.) and get the Blues on the board. On the ensuing drive, rookie linebacker Chris Johnson followed in Shergold’s footsteps when he blocked another of Short’s punts, sending the ball into Walter Cariazo’s hands for a Toronto touchdown. The Blues held a 10-9 lead at halftime. Guelph would regain the lead in the third when Short knocked a 20-yard field goal through to put the Gryphons up 12-10. Nearing the end of the fourth, Toronto came up big when quarterback Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont. found sophomore receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) along the sideline for a game-high 49-yard reception that put the Blues one yard shy of the end zone. Despite their best efforts, Toronto could not find a way through and would have to settle for a field goal, leaving less than two minutes left on the clock. Fortino’s 16-yard field goal capped off an eight-play, 70-yard drive to secure the win. Gillis went 12-for-25 picking up 158 yards through the air, while also leading the team in rushing with 24 yards. Sebastian Magalas of Burlington, Ont. was the Blues top receiver, pulling in two passes for 37 yards. Wilkerson DeSouza, Adam Fehler, Kyle Kennedy and Derek Batchelor each recorded a team-high five solo tackles in the loss. September 6, 2010 Windsor Lancers 26, Toronto Varsity Blues 17 Varsity Centre

Despite an action-packed fourth quarter, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team came up short, falling 26-17 to the Windsor Lancers in front of a near-capacity crowd at Varsity Centre. In what turned out to be an exciting affair down the stretch, a record-setting 4,111 fans packed the stadium for U of T’s annual Frosh Night where first-year students from all faculties and colleges came together to catch this year’s home opener. Windsor kicker Robert Eeuwes proved to be the main event, accounting for all but 10 Lancer points. The Burlington, Ont., native kicked five field goals of 20, 28, 30, 42 and 44 yards and tacked on 410 punting yards in the win. Down 23-0 heading into the final frame, fourth-year quarterback Jordan Scheltgen of Surrey, B.C., turned it up a notch with 159 passing yards and two touchdowns to keep the game within reach. Scheltgen found first-year standout Alex Pierzchalski (London, Ont.) in the end zone for a beautiful 28-yard touchdown, his first as a Varsity Blue, just one minute into the quarter. Defensive end Todd Inkila came through with a huge blocked punt midway through the frame, however the Blues were unsuccessful in converting again until Scheltgen connected a 55-yard pass with fourth-year linebacker-turned-receiver Rolli Adenmosun with just over two minutes remaining. Fourth-year receiver Cory Fernandes opened the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Sam Malian on the Lancers first drive of the game. Malian was 24-of-34 for 254 yards and one touchdown, while Jordan Brescacin ended the night with 13 catches for 118 yards. September 11, 2010 Toronto Varsity Blues 1, Laurier 0 University Stadium

Wilfrid Laurier University’s department of Athletics and Recreation lost its appeal involving football student-athlete David Montoya and Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s 5-in-7 eligibility regulation. The appeal was heard by the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) and a discussion rendered late Friday (Oct. 15). The decision concludes that Wilfrid Laurier University played with an ineligible player in the 37-6 win against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sept. 11, 2010. Under Ontario University Athletics (OUA) rules, Laurier must forfeit the game and Toronto is credited with a 1-0 win. All statistics from this game remain valid, except for those of the ineligible player. The 5-in-7 rule states football student-athletes must use their five years of eligibility within seven years from the date of graduation from high school (eight in Quebec). It was implemented at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) annual general meeting in June of 2010 and applied immediately to anyone not on the 2009-10 eligibility certificate.

September 18, 2010 Toronto Varsity Blues 24, York Lions 19 Varsity Centre

The Varsity Blues football team defeated the York Lions 24-19 to claim their third consecutive Argo Cup in the 41st annual Red & Blue Bowl on Saturday, September 18 at Varsity Centre. U of T’s defensive corps led the way with five sacks, four interceptions and two pass breakups. Veteran lineman Adam Fehler (Toronto) had six tackles, two sacks and one interception, while defensive back Derek Batchelor of Mississauga, Ont., had a game-high 10 solo tackles and one interception. Fourth-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza also chipped in with 8.5 tackles and one sack in the win. Rookie running back Aaron Milton of Whitby, Ont., led Toronto offensively with 146 all-purpose yards (82 rushing, 64 receiving) and one touchdown, while quarterback Andrew Gillis had 83 rushing yards and two touchdowns, also going 15for-24 and 143 passing yards. Fourth-year Waterloo transfer Hugo Lopez of Newmarket, Ont., had eight solo tackles and one interception and was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his efforts. After a slow start for both teams and a scoreless first frame, Blues defensive back Xhejsi Hasko recovered a Michael Boyd fumble that led to a two-play, 15-yard drive. Gillis of Markham, Ont., capped that off with a three-yard rushing touchdown to get Toronto on the board. York kicker Ramsey Aburaneh (Cambridge, Ont.) put one through the uprights midway through the second; however, Milton answered back for Toronto, scoring his first career OUA touchdown on a 49-yard run to give the Blues a 14-3 lead at halftime. Gillis added his second major of the game and extended the lead early in the third quarter on a six-yard run into the end zone. The Lions roared back in the fourth as Dallas Smith (Welland, Ont.) scored on a two-yard run to end a 14-play, 105-yard run. Both teams then exchanged safeties and Toronto would add a single before third-year slot back Alex Bugdahn of Toronto made good on a 41-yard reception from York quarterback Nick Coutu to cut the lead to five with less than two minutes remaining.

October 2, 2010 Toronto Varsity Blues 40, Ottawa Gee-Gees 35 Varsity Centre

The Varsity Blues football team (2-3) handed the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-1) their first loss of the season in a thrilling 40-35 victory on Saturday, October 2 at Varsity Centre. The win marks Toronto’s first over Ottawa since a 24-21 Yates Cup victory in 1974 and U of T’s first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating Waterloo 21-15 on Sept. 19, 1997. Despite a late push by Ottawa in the final two minutes, Toronto played a solid 60 minutes on both sides of the ball. Varsity Blues player of the game Andrew Gillis of Markham, Ont. had a monster game. The fourth-year pivot was 28-for-45 and threw for career-high 343 yards and two TDs. Rookie running back Aaron Milton (Whitby, Ont.) rushed nine times for 147 yards, including a 105-yard touchdown run that ties the U of T record and ranks fourth in the CIS for longest rush. Linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza had a game-high 10 tackles and fellow Mississauga, Ont., native Derek Batchelor recorded seven tackles and two interceptions in the win. Gee-Gees Brad Sinopoli of Peterborough, Ont., threw for a game-high 451 yards and four touchdowns and rushed eight times for 89 yards, while Cyril Adjeitey (Ghana) caught nine of those passes for 153 yards and one major. Veteran receiver Matthew Bolduc of Ottawa opened the scoring for the visitors on the opening series of the game, capping off a three-play, 76-yard drive with a 44-yard touchdown reception from Sinopoli. Five minutes later, Milton found a hole in Ottawa’s defensive line and bolted down the field untouched for a 105-yard touchdown. The Blues continued to press and took the lead on the next drive when Gillis connected on a 24-yard pass with sophomore receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) for his first touchdown of the season. Ottawa responded on the first drive of the second quarter when Cyril Adjeitey of Ghana made good on a 57-yard pass from Sinopoli. Kicker Matthew Falvo converted his second extra point of the game to give the Gee-Gees a narrow 14-13 lead. Toronto hung tough with the previously unbeaten Ottawa squad and answered the call on the next two series. Gillis led his team down on the field on two solid drives of 74- and 100- yards respectively, to set up two Jordan Scheltgen (Surrey, B.C.) touchdowns. Scheltgen came off the bench in both instances and scored on one- and two-yard rushing TDs. Ottawa added a single before time expired and the Blues held a 27-15 lead at the half. The Gee-Gees opened the second half with a seven-play, 73-yard drive that Franck Ngandui ended with a one-yard run to bring the game within five. On the ensuing drive, the Blues faked a punt and veteran quarterback-turned-receiver George Gretes of Toronto connected with Ben Sharpe for a 30-yard gain and a Blues first down. It paid off when Milton ran the ball further into Ottawa territory and fourth-year receiver Michael Prempeh of Toronto capped it off with a five-yard touchdown reception from Gillis. Toronto led 34-22 heading into the final frame. Blues veteran defensive back Derek Batchelor of Mississauga, Ont., had two key interceptions in the second half and kicker Andrew Lomasney added two field goals before the Gee-Gees mounted any sort of a comeback. Ottawa’s Bogdan Raic and Steve Hughes both scored in the last minute of the game on eight- and three-yard receptions to pull the game to within five.

October 16, 2010 McMaster Marauders 40, Toronto Varsity Blues 21 Varsity Centre

A strong second half performance by the No. 9 Marauders football team would be the demise of the hometown Varsity Blues as McMaster came back to win, 40-21, Saturday afternoon at Varsity Centre. Trailing 21-17 at halftime, the Marauders scored 20 third-quarter points and held the Blues scoreless throughout the final two frames to put the game away. Toronto jumped out of the gates early and scored on their first series of the game, capping a four-play, 52-yard drive with Prempeh’s first touchdown reception. On the ensuing drive, McMaster marched down the field but was force to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Andrew Waugh (Perth, Ont.). Waugh would go on to kick three more of 17, 18 and 22 yards through the uprights. The Marauders took the lead when Joshua Kreidl of Hamilton, Ont., made a 20-yard catch on the last play of the first quarter to put the visiting squad up 10-7. Toronto responded in a big way on McMaster’s first drive of the second quarter. Veteran lineman and Toronto native Joe Cappiello sacked Quinlan and forced a fumble, which was recovered by second-year linebacker Kevin Asare who pick up the loose ball and scampered 75 yards down the field for the Blues second major of the day. The Blues struck again with two minutes remaining in the first half. Gillis connected with second-year receiver Paul de Pass of Ajax, Ont., for a 38-yard gain to set up Prempeh’s second TD of the game. The third-year receiver scored on a 12-yard pass to put U of T up by 11. The Marauders would narrow the gap just before the first half expired when D’Hollander, caught a 30-yard pass in the end zone. McMaster carried that momentum into the third. After two Waugh field goals, D’Hollander added his second TD of the game on a 62-yard pass from Quinlan. An interception on Toronto’s next drive would lead to a three-yard rushing touchdown by Nemet as the Marauders built a 37-21 lead heading into the final frame. October 23, 2010 Western Mustangs 35, Toronto Varsity Blues 23 TD Waterhouse Stadium

Despite another outstanding first-half performance, the Varsity Blues 2010 season came to a close as the No. 2 Western Mustangs came back from a 17-point deficit to take the game 35-23 on Saturday afternoon. The Blues end the season with a record of 3-5 and tied for sixth place with the Queen’s Gaels. In lieu of their head-to-head match-up, they finished one spot shy of the final playoff berth. Jonathan Wright of Belleville, Ont., recorded a game-high 99 receiving yards for U of T, while Paul de Pass amassed 95 of his own in the loss. Third-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza of Mississauga also had a game-high 12.5 tackles and finishes the regular season atop the OUA leader board with 62 solo tackles over eight games. Blues quarterback Andrew Gillis (Markham, Ont.) was 25-of-43 for 282 passing yards and one touchdown. There was a stunned silence early at the TD Waterhouse Stadium as over 6,000 fans witnessed Toronto build a 17-0 lead through the first 20 minutes of action. With a few tricks up their sleeve, the Blues pulled off their first treat of the day 10 minutes in to the first quarter - a 58-yard touchdown strike from receiver Michael Prempeh to fellow wide out Paul de Pass on a reverse-option passing play. It was Prempeh’s first collegiate touchdown toss and it gave the Blues a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, Toronto native Andrew Lomasney lined up for a long drive but instead chipped the ball, hitting defensive back Hugo Lopez (Newmarket, Ont.) in stride on a perfectly executed on-side kick to give the Blues another possession with great field position. Rookie Alex Pierzchalski of London, Ont., finished the short drive with an eight-yard reception from Gillis to extend the lead to 14-0. In the second, Toronto added a Lomasney field goal to go up 17-0. The home team then began their rally and showed why they are the second-ranked team in the country, scoring 35 unanswered points. Western cut the Blues lead to 17-9 before halftime and then made some critical adjustments to start the second half, which would ultimately seal the deal for the Mustangs. RECORD MANUAL The earliest documented game of football on the University of Toronto campus occurred 150 years ago - November 9, 1861 – when the game ran under uniquely local rules that required players to bounce the ball. It was in 1877 that the rules of rugby were introduced to U of T by J.H. Mayne Campbell, giving birth to the modern Varsity Blues football team. Over the next century, the rules of rugby in Canada evolved into the modern game of Canadian football. It has been a remarkable history that includes a long list of football firsts, as well as four Grey Cup, two Vanier Cup and 25 Yates Cup championships. Most of Varsity’s early opponents were club teams such as the Hamilton Tigers and the Toronto Argonauts. U of T’s first interuniversity game was played in 1879 in Detroit against the University of Michigan, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw. Varsity’s first Canadian university contest was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the U of T front campus. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930s. Previously, nicknames were not always customary for university teams and references such as ‘The Big Blue’, ‘The Blue and White’ and ‘The Varsity Blue’ appeared interchangeably. Official interuniversity competition began in 1898, with Varsity capturing the inaugural Yates Cup, and 10 of the first 17 championships. Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 through 1911; with the latter three being best known as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season.

FOOTBALL

U of T made their final Grey Cup appearance in 1926, dropping a 10-7 decision to the Ottawa Rough Riders. In the end, Varsity claimed four Grey Cup titles in all (‘09,’10,’11,’20). Through the 1920s and 30s U of T captured six Yates Cups, and would add six more before 1970. However, it was in the early 50s that U of T football attracted its largest crowds. Immediately following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21, 1950. If one team stands out at U of T, it would be the 1958 squad. The team was coached by Dalt White, and is regarded by many as the Varsity Blues’ strongest ever. They averaged almost 40 points a game and remain the only U of T football team to go undefeated and untied since the 1910 squad. Seven years later, White’s final season on the sidelines, the Varsity Blues claimed another first, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup championship by a 14-7 score over the University of Alberta. The 1965 team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Meanwhile, since 1965 the Varsity Blues have captured five Yates Cup titles. The Varsity Blues claimed their second Vanier Cup in 1993 under the tutelage of head coach Bob Laycoe. In a thrilling final, Glenn McCausland returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, a Vanier Cup record that still stands today, as the Varsity Blues slipped past the University of Calgary 37-34.
