ANTHONY Head Coach

CA P OTO S TO A four-time Blues team captain and two-time all-Canadian, Anthony Capotosto joined the Blues men’s soccer program as head coach in 2007 after two years as an assistant to Carmine Isacco. Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in two of the past three CIS championship tournaments. An OUA all-star defender in all five of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a first team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to their most recent OUA title.

The OUA defending champion Varsity Blues return to the field retooled and ready in 2011. With 15 players returning and head coach Anthony Capotosto hired on a full-time basis, Toronto is once again on pace to be one of the top teams in the country. U of T ended their 2010 campaign in first place in the East division with a 10-1-3 record and went on to earn their first OUA title in eight years. The Blues then registered a fourth-place finish as they hosted the national championship at Varsity Centre. John Smits returns for his fourth season to lead the Blues between the pipes. The Mississauga, Ont., native was named the OUA gold-medal match player of the game after a spectacular game-winning save in penalty kicks. The OUA all-star recorded nine shut outs and allowed only five goals against over 14 regular season games. Sophomore goalkeeper Russell Moore will serve as Smits’ back up this season. 2010 OUA East most valuable player Darragh McGee enters his final season in Blue and White. The CIS all-Canadian defender and team captain will be relied upon for his versatility as he starts the year in Toronto’s midfield to replace 2010 OUA East rookie of the year Ezequiel Lubocki, who is sidelined with a pre-season injury. McGee turns to veteran defenders Michael Braithwaite and Scott Nesbitt to control the backfield in his absence. Rookie Nikola Paunic and forth-year engineering major Lawrence Buchan will be contributing members, while Nicolar Girard, Jean Giroux, Neil D’Silva and Killian Elkinson round out U of T’s defensive corps. Assistant captain Geoffrey Borgmann and two-time OUA all-star Dylan Bams are expected to step in and control the midfield in 2011, while Jesse Assing, Vlejko Lukovic and Ryan Sciacchitano will also see playing time this season. With the loss of veteran strikers Nordo Gooden and Alexander Raphael, Capotosto turns to sophomore Mario Kovacevic and rookies Jermaine Burrell and Justin Liendo to generate offensive this season. The Varsity Blues open their 2011 regular season campaign as they host the Carleton Ravens on Sunday, September 4 at Varsity Centre. The game is scheduled to begin 3 p.m.

The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team finished their 2010-11 regular season with a 14-8 record, giving them their highest ranking in the competitive OUA East division since 2007-08. The men finished second behind the undefeated Carleton Ravens and had a hot start to the season, winning seven of their first 10 contests. The Blues then strung together five consecutive victories from January 26 to February 5 to earn themselves a bye through the first round of the OUA playoffs. Toronto was also ranked among the top 10 teams in the CIS from November 16 to January 18, peaking as the No. 9 seed in the country. The Blues ended the season on a four-game losing streak and were upset by the third-place Ottawa GeeGees in the OUA quarter-finals. Fourth-year veterans Andrew Wasik and Drazen Glisic were named first and second team OUA allstars, respectively. Wasik recorded seven doubledoubles for the Blues, while Glisic ranked third in the conference with a 55.7 field goal percentage.

The University of Toronto men’s soccer program continues to be one of the best in the nation and upholds a tradition of success and accomplishment that stretches back 130 years. Organized soccer was first introduced to the U of T campus in 1876, when the University of Toronto Football Club abandoned a traditional local set of football rules in favour of the thennovel “Association game.” The current team was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest in North America. The Blues dominated the Ontario-Quebec interuniversity league for much of the 20th century, capturing 43 league titles between 1904 and 1968, including 17 championships in the 1950s and 60s. This tradition of excellence continues to the present day. For the past two decades, the U of T men’s soccer team has been consistently ranked in the top 10 in the country and has reached the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships nine times since 1986, bringing home the national title in 1988 and a silver medal in 2005. The Blues were OUA silver medalists from 2004-06 and 2009 and last captured the OUA title in 2002. Varsity Blues soccer also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes from Ontario and across the country. In 1989 the entire Varsity Blues squad represented Canada at the World University Championship and captured the silver medal. Since 1979, 37 Varsity Blues have been named CIS all-Canadians, including Mark Purdy, Peter Sarantopoulos, Joe Demiglio and Mike Bialy.

VARSITY BLUES – 1988 CIAU CHAMPIONS

In 1988, the Varsity Blues men’s soccer team claimed the nation’s top prize, a CIAU championship, for the first time in U of T history. The Blues wrapped up the regular season schedule with a near perfect 15-1-1 record, scoring 42 goals and allowing just 12. In the post-season, U of T opened their title run with a 1-0 penalty kick victory over Carleton before slipping past Queen’s 4-2 in the provincial semifinals and shutting out Western 2-0 to claim the OUAA crown. At the national championship, the Blues defeated number-one ranked Alberta (2-1) with goals from Pat Cubellis

and George Argyropoulos. And in the final, Cubellis notched the game’s only marker in a 1-0 victory over McGill. The team then capped off their storybook season at the World University Soccer Championship in Arizona, where they represented Canada and earned a silver medal. The success of this squad, which was led by 1988 OUAA coach of the year Jim Lefkos, can be attributed to their tremendous depth, determination and incredible team chemistry. Seven Varsity Blues were named OUAA all-stars, with Cubellis and Coz Zambazis also garnering all-Canadian honours.
