Coaching Staff

ANTHONY Head Coach

CA P OTO S TO A four-time Blues team captain and two-time all-Canadian, Anthony Capotosto joined the Blues men’s soccer program as head coach in 2007 after two years as an assistant to Carmine Isacco. He was hired on a full-time basis as both the men’s and women’s head coach in April, 2011. Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in two of the past three CIS championship tournaments. An OUA all-star defender in all five of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a first team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to their most recent OUA title. Capotosto holds a Canadian National ‘B’ coaching licence and United States Soccer Federation National ‘C’ and ‘Y’ licences. In the spring of 2008, Anthony travelled to England for a 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Ipswich Town Football Club of the English First Division. Following that, he served as an assistant coach with the Italia Shooters of the Canadian Soccer League for the duration of the summer. In 2010, Capotosto travelled back to England for another 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Plymouth Argyle FC where he worked closely with former Toronto FC head coach John Carver and Paul Mariner, TFC’s new director of player development. Anthony continues to serve as the Toronto FC Academy and currently is an assistant coach to Jason Bent (head coach) for their senior academy team that competes in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL). A graduate of U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science (2002), Capotosto earned his B.Ed at OISE in 2003. He has taught physical education at Scarborough’s Agincourt Collegiate Institute since 2003.

Goalkeeper Coach Luciano joined the men’s soccer coaching staff in 2009 after a five-year goalkeeping career with the Blues. As a player, Luciano helped the Blues win three OUA silver medals (2004-06) and competed in three CIS national championship tournaments, where he helped the team to a silver medal in 2005. As a team cocaptain in 2008, he was nominated for U of T’s George M. Biggs award, given annually to the graduating male studentathlete who has contributed most to university athletics from the standpoint of leadership, sportsmanship and performance, in 2008. Luciano is an Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) senior level 3 certified coach and is a candidate for the provincial “B” license (national “B” license part 1). He also holds the OSA goalkeeping coaching diploma and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) goalkeeping level 1 coaching diploma.

Graduate Assistant Jenessa joins the Varsity Blues women’s soccer coaching staff in 2011 after five years with the team. During her time at U of T, she was selected as the recipient of the coaches award in 2009 for her outstanding achievements in the classroom and her leadership and dedication on the women’s varsity soccer team. Banwell was also the recipient of the Helen Gurney award in 2010 for her leadership, academic achievement and excellence in athletics. A two-time OUA allstar, Banwell received the Juri V. Daniel in-course scholarship for academic excellence and leadership in 2010. She has led numerous clinics and camps as a part of the women’s soccer team’s outreach programs, and was also the program director at Christie Kicks Soccer, a local development organization for kids aged 5-13.

With full-time head coach Anthony Capotosto at the helm, the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team is looking for a fresh start in 2011. The Blues have a solid core of veterans as well as a talented group of first and second-year players and look to improve upon their third-place finish last season. Fifth-year veteran and team captain Jackie Miklovich, as well as third-year standout Diana Esteireiro, will be called upon to lead Toronto’s defensive corps. They will rely on Fatima Braimoh and Nicole Zikovitz, who both return from injury in 2011, as well as sophomores Elise Kohno and Zovel Hyre to provide support to a unit that allowed only 11 goals against in 16 games last season. Veterans Nav Deol and Laura Machado look to lead a young group of midfielders this season, while second-year architecture major Caroline Murphy has solidified her spot with an impressive showing at training camp. Rookie Olivia Gonsalves will see significant playing time and Lisa English is also expected to contribute in 2011. Fifth-year transfer Eilish McConville is sure to add a spark to U of T’s front line in 2011. A three-time CIS all-Canadian as a member of the Queen’s Gaels, McConville will also rely on third-year commerce major Jessica Fantozzi, as well as sophomore striker Aisha Lewis, to generate some offence in 2011. Defender-turned-striker Mel Bowen and rookie Hattie Daumann round out Toronto’s offensive unit this season. Capotosto will rely upon two capable keepers in rookie Sara Petrucci and second-year Monica Maher to lead Toronto between the pipes in 2011. The Varsity Blues open their 2011 regular season campaign at home this weekend (Sept. 3-4) as they host the Ottawa GeeGees and Carleton Ravens. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team went 8-4-4 and finished in third place in the OUA East division. Fifth-year transfer student Kate Crowley had a solid season in the midfield and led Toronto with five goals throughout the year. Jenessa Banwell was recognized as a first-team OUA East all-star as she anchored a strong Blues defence that included second-team all-stars Alicia Lashley and goalkeeper Katarina Vulic. Crowley also picked up second-team honours, making her a five-time all-star over a stellar university career that included four seasons with the Western Mustangs. The Blues faced off against the sixth-seeded Nipissing Lakers in the first round of the OUA playoffs. A late marker ended the women’s year in heartbreaking fashion, as they fell 1-0 to the Lakers and were eliminated from the postseason.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s soccer is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered at U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. Several hundred Varsity Blues athletes have qualified for Olympic Games and FISU (international university) Games, as well as Commonwealth and Pan Am Games. Varsity Blues teams are coached by one of the most talented, acclaimed and successful coaching staffs in North America, including national team and Olympic coaches. The recognizable blue and white uniform represents an intercollegiate program that is one of the largest and most successful university sport programs in North America. Women’s soccer at U of T provides student-athletes with the unique opportunity to pursue a favourite sport and a challenging academic program at one of the world’s leading public research universities.
