Bélanger’s head coaching resume with the Varsity Blues includes; nine OUA championships, 17 CIS championship appearances (46 games: 23 wins, 25 losses), one CIS championship (1985-86), two CIS silver medals (1995-96, 1993-94), and two CIS bronze medals (1988-89, 1984-85). Having had great success on the university stage and as a veteran of national and international competition as both a player and coach, Bélanger has been apart of many national teams at a variety of levels, including the head coach of the 1997 student national team that won five of six games at the FISU Games in Sicily.

With the loss of veterans Joanna Medri, Sherri Pierce and Megan Stoncius, a new leadership model emerges as the Blues look to battle for prominence in the OUA East division. “We’ve got a good group of student-athletes,” said Michèle Bélanger, who enters her 34th season as Blues bench boss. “I’m confident that we will mesh at the right time and be regarded as one of the top teams in the province this season.” 2012 OUA all-star Jill Stratton returns to strengthen the Blues at both ends of the court. The Etobicoke, Ont., native clocked a team-high 29.8 minutes, 14.6 points and 4.8 rebounds per game, while also leading the team in assists (62) last season. The team will look to veterans Jasmine Lewin (Brampton, Ont.), Rachel Sider (New Westminster, B.C.) and Liane Bailey (Montreal) to help steer the ship. Lewin is a fourthyear transfer from Eastern Kentucky University, while Sider is coming off a break out season. Bailey has been relied on to calm the troops with her consistent play.
Fourth-year guard Vanessa Brathwaite joins the Blues after three seasons with the Western Mustangs track and field team. The Brampton, Ont., native and 2012 CIS allCanadian sprinter adds great speed to Toronto’s squad and is sure to turn heads this season. Fourth-year forward Alicia Van Kampen (Orangeville, Ont.) returns from injury this season. The 6-foot-2 standout brings length, agility and post dominance both on offence and defence. She will be bolstered by returning veterans Amanda Lauzon and Kristy Chute. Lauzon (Niagara Falls, Ont.) will be relied upon to provide a big presence under the glass, while Chute brings an overall package and can be relied on to play in any situation. Sophomore Melissa Frederick will be called upon to step in when needed at the guard position. The Blues also add two rookie talents in Alanna Garner and Vanessa Wallace, who are certain to break into the line up and have a direct impact on Toronto’s game this season.
Returners Julie Longauer and Kristina Menton return and look to make an impact this season. A native of Whitby, Ont., Longaur will use her six-foot length at both ends of the court, while Menton (Manotick, Ont.) has improved and will be needed to win battles on the inside and outside.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s basketball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues basketball team has made 17 trips to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship, including a berth in the 2011 national tournament. With one national title, two silver medals and two bronze medals to show for their efforts, the Varsity Blues are gunning for a trip back to the CIS Championship in 2012-13.
U of T has collected the conference crown nine times, the second best in the OUA. The team has brought home the OUA title four times in the past 19 seasons. Along with team accolades, Varsity Blues basketball also regularly attracts some of the top high school studentathletes both here in Ontario and across the country. Since 1985, 57 Varsity Blues have been named OUA all-stars and 18 have been named CIS all-Canadians. A number of Blues players have spent time with the Canadian national team and Justine Ellison earned CIS Athlete of the Year honours in 1996.
L
On the sidelines, head coach Michèle Bélanger returns for her 34th season behind the Varsity Blues bench. Her record speaks for itself - nine OUA championships, 17 CIS championship appearances and five CIS top three finishes, including a national championship crown in 1986. Varsity Blues women’s basketball is all about excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
