Coaching Staff
DA R R E N Head Coach
L OW E Darren Lowe first joined the U of T coaching staff in 199293 as an assistant. That year, the Blues won the Ontario championship and were national finalists. He went on to be named head coach in the 1995-96 season. At the conclusion of the 2002-2003 season, Lowe was honoured as the OUA East Division Coach of the Year for the second time in three years (00-01). Lowe has also been involved with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization serving as a guest coach in 1998, and spent time in the summer of 2001 working with some of the Leafs prospects. In 1999-2000, Lowe was a guest coach with Canada’s national team. A graduate of U of T, Lowe has two degrees, BPHE ‘85 and B Ed ‘86. As a player, he had an impressive career at both the amateur and professional levels. Lowe was a key member of the undefeated 1981-82 OUAA championship team and captained the team upon his return to university hockey in 1985-86. During Lowe’s Varsity career, he was an OUAA all-star in each of his three seasons, an all-Canadian in 1985-86 and the MVP of the 1981-82 playoffs.

In 1986, Lowe’s final year as a Varsity Blue, he received U of T’s prestigious George M. Biggs Trophy for leadership, sportsmanship and performance as well as the Harry Jerome Award and U of T’s Silver “T” for excellence in athletics. Lowe represented Canada at the 1984 Winter Olympics. As captain, he led a Canadian squad that won a gold medal at the 1984 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland, and again captained the 1985-86 national student team. Lowe played professionally for six seasons, including stops in the NHL (Pittsburgh Penguins), the American Hockey League and in Europe (Austria, Finland). He finished his playing career in 1990-91 as a member of the IHL’s San Diego Gulls. Lowe, his wife Maari, and children Nolan and Peyton reside in Toronto.

FISHER
Assistant Coach ‘Fish’, as he is affectionately known by the players and coaching staff, has coached at various levels and does a tremendous job with the Blues goaltenders. During the 2000-01 season, he worked with the Canadian national women’s team’s goaltenders prior to their World Championship. Fisher has worked at hockey camps in both Canada and the United States and is considered one of North America’s top goaltending instructors. He was one of the Blues great goaltenders of the 1980s and helped backstop U of T to an undefeated season in 1981-82. Fisher is also involved in coaching soccer at the rep level. Fisher is a high school teacher who lives in Mississauga with his wife Veronica and their children, Jennifer, Shannon, Ellen and Tim.

HUTCHISON
Assistant Coach Hutchison spent a year as the team’s strength and conditioning coordinator in 2006-07 before joing the staff as an assistance coach in 2007-08. After a five-year playing career, this former Varsity Blue earned nominations for the George M. Biggs trophy and Randy Gregg award honouring his commitment to hockey and to his community. Away from the rink, Hutchison is the research coordinator of the U of T Varsity Athlete Concussion Program and a FPEH course instructor.

TRIFON
Assistant Coach Trifon has been a member of the Blues coaching staff since 2005-06, following a five-year playing career with the Varsity Blues. Trifon was the OUA East Rookie of the Year in 199000, the OUA’s Most Sportsmanlike Player in 2000-01 as well as a twotime Varsity Blues leading scorer. While working with the coaching staff, Trifon completed his Bachelor of Education at U of T. He is currently teaching at Agincourt Collegiate and lives with his wife Diana in Scarborough.
STEVE
DEVINE
Assistant Coach Steve Devine has been a member of the Varsity Blues coaching staff since 2009-10. Steve played five seasons with the Varsity Blues (2002-06, 2008-09), where he twice received the team’s coaches award. The Scarborough, Ont. native has also been the captain of both the Ontario and Canadian deaf ice hockey team that garnered two national titles as well as three medals in international competition. Steve was a group leader for Alliance Hockey’s High Preformance 1 level 3 certification seminar this past summer, and is currently finishing his NCCP Level 3. He is currently the head coach of the Team Ontario deaf ice hockey team and he holds a Master’s of Teaching degree from Griffith University in Australia. Steve currently works as a customer service/financial collection agent at Divine Funiture Rental in Toronto.

The Varsity Blues look to build on last year’s fourth-place finish in the OUA East division. U of T has a large group of returnees, as well as many key recruits that will hope to push the team into a top three position this season. Toronto has two solid returnees in goaltenders Garrett Sheehan and Brett Willows. Sheehan possesses great reflexes and battles on every shot, while Willows is a fierce competitor and is coming off a tremendous freshman year. Veterans Matt Walters and Tyler Turcotte return on defence in 2012-13. Walters led all U of T blue-liners in scoring and has twice been recognized as the team’s top defenceman. He will provide leadership and offence, while Turcotte is expected to play in a shut down role. Cameron Bernier is back for his third season in the Blue and White, while sophomores Tim Halloran and Marcus Yolevski both had solid rookie seasons and are expected to play significant roles this season. Recruits Dylan Heide, Mathew Oakley and Lane Werbowski add depth to the core group of returners. Centreman Rob Kay enters his final year of OUA competition. Kay has put up impressive numbers in the past, but will be required to return to form as the competition at centre is deep. Third-year centremen Blake Boddy, and Michael Markovic as well as sophomore Paul Van De Velde round out returnees in the middle, with rookie Tanner Waldvogel also looking for playing time. On the right side, senior Kyle Ventura will be expected to produce again this year after finishing second on the team in scoring in 2011-12. Sophomores Tyler Liukkonnen, Tyler Von Englebrechten and Alex Derlis are all back on the roster, while Western Mustangs transfer Jeff Brown also adds a scoring touch to the roster this season. On the left wing, OUA veteran Cassidy Preston will play in his fifth and final year. Third-year forward Charlie McDonald and sophomore Kevin Deagle will compete for regular playing time, with first-year players Andrew Doyle and Ernesto Valente expected to contribute as well.

The Varsity Blues men’s hockey season came to an end after a heartbreaking 4-3 double-overtime loss in the third and deciding game of the OUA East men’s hockey quarter-final series against the Carleton Ravens. The Blues wrapped up the regular season winning seven of their last nine games with a 16-9-3 record and in fourth place in the East. Veteran forward Byron Elliott led the Blues in scoring for the fourth consecutive season with 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points this season. Fellow assistant captain Dan Brewer had a breakout season with seven goals and a team-high 19 assists, while Kyle Ventura found his scoring touch, totaling 15 goals and nine assists. Toronto’s goaltending duo Brett Willows and Garrett Sheehan held .913 and .914 save percentages, respectively. A highlight of the season occurred January14th when the team beat the eventual Queen’s Cup and CIS champions, the McGill Redmen, 4-3. Darren Lowe was named the OUA East coach of the year for the third time in his career.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, men’s hockey is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. Tradition, success and excellence are three words that are synonymous with Varsity Blues hockey. The hockey Blues, one of the University of Toronto’s oldest and most successful teams, were formed on January 15, 1891. In 1902-03, Toronto joined Queen’s and McGill to form Canada’s first intercollegiate hockey league. The late Conn Smythe, founder of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was a Blues coach from 1923 to 1926, the first in a number of well-known personalities to stand behind the Varsity bench. Smythe was also a player and Blues captain while studying engineering in 1915. When Smythe founded the Maple Leafs, he ‘borrowed’ the familiar Varsity Blues sweater design for his new team. Other well-known Blues coaches include former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson (1926-28), Ace Bailey (1935-40 and 1945-49), Justice Joseph Kane (1962-65) and Mike Keenan (1983-84).
HOCKEY
Tom Watt, a major influence in Canadian hockey, led the Blues to nine of their 10 national titles during his coaching career at U of T, which spanned from 1965 to 1979, and again in 1984-85. Watt was a member of the Canadian Olympic team coaching staff in 1980 and 1988 and has been head coach of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Blues have played a prominent role on the international hockey scene. The Varsity Grads, a team of former Blues players, captured the gold medal at the 1928 Olympic Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In 1968, the Blues earned the bronze medal for Canada at the World University Games. In February 1972, the Blues thrilled a capacity crowd at Varsity Arena with a dramatic 5-1 victory over the USSR student national team. The Varsity presence in Olympic hockey continued during the 1980s. At Lake Placid in 1980, Tom Watt was a co-coach of Team Canada with a roster that included no fewer than six Blues players: Warren Anderson, Dan D’Alvise, Cary Farelli, Joe Grant,

Shane Pearsall and Stelio Zupancich. Anderson and current head coach Darren Lowe were Olympians in 1984 at Sarajevo. In 1992-93, after capturing the Queen’s Cup, the Blues lost to Acadia in the national final. U of T’s most recent national title was won in 198384, when coach Mike Keenan led the Blues to a 9-1 victory over the Concordia Stingers. The Blues have won 10 national, 21 Ontario league and 10 additional titles for a total of 41 championships in the team’s history. “During my years in hockey I have been fortunate to have been part of many great traditions.
