Special Teams:

With the loss of OUA all-star linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza, head coach Greg Gary will rely on a key group of veterans to lead Toronto’s defensive unit in 2012.

Richard Quittenton steps into the starter’s role following the graduation of veteran pivot Andrew Gillis. Despite seeing limited action, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore did average over 10 yards per pass last season. Quittenton will be backed up by Simon Nassar and rookie Chris Jugovic.

Special teams is a critical piece of a winning puzzle and the Blues will have to find some new pieces that fit. With some significant losses in the line up, fresh faces will be expected to step in and fill some big shoes.

Broc Elliott and Chris Johnson are charged with filling DeSouza’s void this season. In 2011, the duo combined for 33 tackles and were key contributors to the OUA’s No. 1 ranked defence after Weeks 3, 4 and 5. Taylor Shergold and Spenser Stewart will also be called upon to supply solid support to U of T’s second line of defence. Fourth-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan is coming off a breakout season, posting 20 solo tackles and earning an invitation to last season’s East West Bowl. Kinahan provided solid numbers in 2011, which included two interceptions for 69 yards in Toronto’s season opener at Windsor. Third-year standout David Green, sophomore Jaiden McBride and incoming rookie Jimmy Ro are also expected to contribute significantly in 2012. The Blues return 3-of-4 starting defensive linemen, including James Bodanis, Abbey Olusoga and Zack Lukings. Everton Williams will take on a starting role after a solid showing in 2011.

10

All eyes will be on veterans Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass to lead an impressive receiving corps this season. A native of London, Ont., Pierzchalski nearly doubled his numbers in 2011, ranking 15th among OUA receivers with 443 yards. De Pass also posted impressive numbers, ranking second in the province with 21.2 yards per catch. Kevin Bradfield and Cody Rossi will also be steady targets for Quittenton in 2012. Emilijano Daci and Stephan Boroniec need to hit the ground running on Labour Day. Daci had a stellar rookie campaign, ending with an explosive 137-yard performance versus Waterloo on Oct. 22. Boroniec is a versatile full back, having recorded 87 rushing and 119 receiving yards last season.

Sophomore receiver Kevin Bradfield will take the reigns and replace graduated punt returner, Dorian Munroe, and kick returner, Michael Prempeh, who accounted for over 75% of U of T’s returns in 2011. Rookie Marcus Hobbs will take over as Toronto’s punter following the graduation of Blues captain Willie Sharpe. Coach Gary is also very big on the talent of third-year linebacker Dylan Howes, who is turning heads and solidified his spot as the team’s longsnapper. Fifth-year kicker Andrew Lomasney leads this young special teams corps. The Toronto native hit 7-of-15 field goals in 2011 – his longest was 37 yards at York on Sept. 10.

At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, Mario Tedesco shifts from left guard to centre this season. He, along with third-year linemen Aaron Wheaton, Connor Hanak, and Shawn Horrigan, will be relied on to step up big for the Blues offence and protect their quarterback. The Blues also add some talented rookies, Kyle Draga and Zach van Kerrebroeck, into the mix.

In his first year as head coach and manager of football operations, Greg Gary spearheaded the resurgance of the Blues football program. The team finished their season with a 3-5 record, beating York, Guelph, and in the last game of the season, Waterloo. Fifth-year quarterback Andrew Gillis became only the sixth Varsity Blues quarterback in history to throw for over 4,000 career passing yards. In his last game, he was 9-of-17 for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Fourth-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza and defensive back Dorian Munroe were honoured as OUA all-stars this season. DeSouza was named an OUA first team all-star after ranking second in the province with 47 tackles. He was later chosed by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2012 CFL draft. Munroe ranked second on the team with 36 tackles, while also recording one sack, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and three breakups.

September 5, 2011 Windsor Lancers 38, Toronto Varsity Blues 5 Alumni Field

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team opened their 2011 regular season with a 38-5 loss to the Windsor Lancers on Labour Day at Alumni Field. The loss marked Toronto’s eighth straight to Windsor, dating back to a 13-11 Blues victory on Oct. 13, 2001. A rocky first half would see all but three of Windsor’s points accounted for as the home team took a 35-5 lead into halftime. Toronto saw glimpses of hope in the second half, highlighted by third-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan’s first of two career interceptions – one of which he returned for 69 yards. The Whitby, Ont., native added five solo tackles to his first game as a starter. Veteran linebacker Scott Smith had a team-high six solo tackles, while sophomore lineman Zack Lukings had four tackles and one sack on the day. Fifth-year quarterback and Toronto native Andrew Gillis went 14-for-24 and 183 yards with second-year running back Aaron Milton of Whitby, Ont., accounting for 43 of Toronto’s 58 rushing yards. Third-year receiver Paul de Pass (Ajax, Ont.) led all players with 61 receiving yards in the loss. Toronto’s special teams unit struggled early as Windsor’s Shea Pierre (Mississauga, Ont.) returned the opening kick-off 104 yards for the first major of the afternoon. Third-year running back Mitch Dender then returned a punt for a 73-yard touchdown on the Lancers next change of possession to give the home team a 14-0 lead after 2:19 of action. The Blues got on the board as Windsor conceded a safety at the 5:50 minute mark of the first quarter. Austin’s Kennedy’s 1-yard touchdown run was answered by a Toronto rouge as the Lancers built a 21-3 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. Shomari Grant and Paul Lefaive scored on 3- and 43-yard runs, respectively, early in the second as Toronto dug themselves a big hole, going into halftime down 35-5. Neither team was able to muster much offensive in the final two quarters. The Lancers would add a rouge and single in the fourth quarter to make the final score 38-5. September 10, 2011 Toronto Varsity Blues 10, York Lions 8 York Stadium

Andrew Lomasney kicked a 37-yard field goal with 56 seconds remaining to secure a 10-8 Varsity Blues win in the 42nd annual Red & Blue Bowl at York Stadium. With the win, the Blues improved to 1-1, while the York Lions remained pointless with a 0-2 record. Toronto now holds a 2616-0 head-to-head record over their York counterparts. The game, which saw a total of five field goals, a safety and a rouge, broke the record for the lowest scoring Red & Blue Bowl in history, previously held by a 14-6 York victory in 2002. Lomasney hit 3-of-4 field goal attempts of 17, 24 and 37 yards in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively. Fifth-year quarterback Andrew Gillis of Toronto was 19-of-39 for 268 yards, while sophomore running back Aaron Milton (Whitby, Ont.) led all players with 114 yards on 19 carries. Fellow second-year receiver and London, Ont., native Alex Pierzchalski was Gillis’s prime target for the day, with nine receptions for a game-high 127 yards in the win. Veteran defensive lineman Adam Fehler (Toronto) led the Blues with 6.5 tackles and fourth-year transfer Dorian Munroe of Miami, Fla., had six tackles on the day. Leading 7-2 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lions came from behind and hit back-to-back field goals of 41 and 17 yards. The home team built a one-point lead (8-7) with 4:47 remaining in the game. U of T started to charge down the field with just over two minutes to go and got in field-goal range thanks in large part to Pierzchalski, who had three catches for 22 yards in the series.

September 17, 2011 Toronto Varsity Blues 21, Guelph Gryphons 12 Varsity Centre Andrew Gillis rushed for two touchdowns in leading the Varsity Blues football team to a 21-12 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in their 2011 home opener at Varsity Centre. The win marked Toronto’s (2-1) first over the Guelph (1-2) since 1995. Leading 14-12 with under a minute remaining, fifth-year veteran quarterback Andrew Gillis avenged Toronto’s 2010 season-opening loss to the Gryphons, running 25 yards into the end zone to seal the deal and Toronto’s second victory of the season. Gillis was 12-for-28 and 173 yards, while rushing seven times for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Aaron Milton of Whitby, Ont., led all players with 85 yards rushing and one touchdown. Fourth-year linebacker and Wilkerson DeSouza was named theScore’s player of the game as well as the CIS defensive player of the week. The Mississauga, Ont., native recorded a season-high 11 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in the win. The Gryphons got out to an early lead when fourth-year veteran Michael Millar of Port Colbourne, Ont., blocked Willie Sharpe’s punt in the first series of the game and recovered it in the end zone for the major. On the last drive of the opening quarter, Gillis led the home team down the field before Milton finished it off with a seven-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Toronto built on that momentum in their next series with Gillis once again steering the ship. The Toronto native connected with veteran receiver Michael Prempeh for a 49-yard gain and then ran it in himself for a one-yard rushing touchdown. U of T’s defence got in on the action when fourth-year defensive back Dorian Munroe of Miami, Fla., intercepted a Christopher Rossetti (Mississauga, Ont.) pass on Guelph’s ensuing drive. The Blues held a 14-7 lead at halftime. The Gryphons drove deep into Blues territory early in the third, after a fake field goal attempt turned into a Jedd Gardner 15-yard rush. However, U of T’s defensive corps held strong with DeSouza forcing a fumble and recovering it on his own one-yard line. Toronto would then concede a safety and maintain a 14-9 advantage heading into the final stanza. Guelph would kick a field goal early in the fourth to close the gap to two (14-12) and quickly regained possession when Sebastian Howard picked off the U of T pivot. Toronto’s defence stood tall as both teams exchanged possessions over the next 10 minutes of action. With memories of their last-second loss to the Gryphons last season, U of T dug in their heels. A 44-yard reception by third-year receiver Paul de Pass gave the Blues some breathing room and would ultimately set up Gillis’ final TD.

September 24, 2011 Ottawa Gee-Gees 41, Toronto Varsity Blues 0 Frank Clair Stadium On a day where nothing went their way, the Varsity Blues football team dropped a 41-0 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Frank Clair Stadium. With the loss, the Blues went to 2-2 and tied with the Queen’s Gaels for fifth place in the OUA standings. Ottawa now holds a 21-17 head-to-head record versus Toronto over the past 106 years. Fourth-year linebacker Wilkerson DeSouza (Mississauga, Ont.) led Toronto’s defence with eight solo tackles, while both Adam Fehler and Broc Elliott has six tackles apiece. Fifth-year Blues quarterback Andrew Gillis completed 17-of-33 passes for 190 yards and four interceptions on the day. U of T’s offence struggled with five fumbles and four sacks against in the loss. Ottawa native Mohamed Abdallah led all Blues receivers with four catches for 62 yards, while veteran Sebastian Magalas of Burlington, Ont., also had four receptions for 58 yards. The Blues came out strong on their opening drive as Gillis hit three different targets, including a 33-yard reception by Magalas, to reach Ottawa’s 18-yard line. However, Ottawa linebacker Nick Lecour intercepted the next pass to put an end to U of T’s series. The Gee-Gees opened the scoring with a 40-yard field goal by Matthew Flavo early in the first quarter. Ottawa went up 10-0 as Brendan Gillanders capped off a seven-play, 94-yard series with a one-yard run into the end zone. Flavo added another field goal, this time from 43 yards out, as the home team held a 13-0 lead after the first quarter. Ottawa carried that momentum over to the second quarter with two more majors by F. Nagundi and Gillanders. The Blues did have some chances to cut into the Gee-Gees lead. However, Toronto had a long touchdown pass called back due to a penalty, and also fumbled on a fake field-goal attempt. The Gee-Gees would add one touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to walk away with the win.

Toronto managed to move the ball considerably well, despite the weather, with Gillis was throwing for 165 yards, compared to Queen’s offence, which struggled with only 16 yards in the air. The game remained scoreless for the first 27 minutes of action until Gillis connected on a 54-yard strike to de Pass. That set up an eight-yard Andrew Lomasney field goal as the Blues walked off at halftime with a narrow 3-0 lead. Lomasney would add his second field goal, this time from 19 yards, on Toronto’s second series of the second half to give Blues a 6-0 advantage. October 6, 2011 McMaster Marauders 50, Toronto Varsity Blues 14 Ron Joyce Stadium The Varsity Blues football team fell 50-14 to the No. 5 McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ont. The Marauders scored three third-quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach and hand the Blues their fourth loss of 2011. Toronto is now 2-4, while the Marauders improve to 4-1 on the season. Fifth-year Blues quarterback and Toronto native Andrew Gillis was 18-of-32 for 207 yards, two majors and three interceptions. Marauders quarterback Kyle Quinlan, who returned to the gridiron after a three-week suspension, threw for 455 yards and five touchdowns on the night. Veteran receiver Michael Prempeh of Toronto led the Blues with 86 yards on seven catches, in addition to four kick returns for 123 yards. Sophomore and London, Ont., native Alex Pierzchalski had six receptions for 68 yards and one touchdown. U of T struggled on the ground with a combined 69 yards rushing, compared to the Marauders 204. Mississauga, Ont., native Wilkerson DeSouza once again led the Blues defensive unit. The fourth-year linebacker totalled five tackles, while four other players had four in the loss. McMaster got out to an early 10-0 lead after a 17-yard field goal by Marauders kicker Tyler Crapigna and a Chris Pezetta two-yard rushing touchdown. The home team held a 10-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of action. Toronto got on the board on their first series of the second quarter after an unconventional series of events. An Andrew Lomasney field goal attempt was blocked by the Marauders, but recovered by U of T offensive lineman Aaron Wheaton on the one-yard line. Pierzchalski then capped off the 12-play, 77-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown reception from Gillis. The Marauders responded on the ensuing drive as Quinlan connected a 30-yard pass with receiver Brad Fochesato for the major. Not to be outdone, Gillis drove the visiting squad right back down into Marauders territory and, with the help of a McMaster 15-yard penalty, found third-year receiver Paul de Pass in the end zone for a 28-yard strike to close the gap to three (14-17). Quinlan answered back, escaping coverage and connecting with Matthew Peressi on a three-yard major. That and a safety would give the Marauders a 26-14 lead at halftime. McMaster put the game out of reach in the third quarter with three touchdown receptions of 16, 38 and 72 yards and held a 47-14 lead heading into the final frame. A 38-yard fourth-quarter field goal would round out the scoring.

Tyler Varga had the only score of the first quarter, capping off a nine-play, 59-yard opening drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown, his 15th of the season. Andrew Lomasney got the Blues on the board early in the second with a 27-yard field goal. Toronto marched down the field on their next possession, thanks in large part to a 37-yard pitch and catch to Pierzchalski; however, the Mustangs defence came up with two big stops, leaving the Blues kicker with an easy 10-yard field goal to cut the lead to one (7-6). On Toronto’s last series of the second quarter, Gillis connected a 43-yard pass with de Pass to set up Lomasney’s third field goal of the first half, this time from 20-yards out, giving Toronto a narrow 9-7 advantage at halftime. The Mustangs came out ready to go in the second half and, despite an interception on their first drive, they took control of the game. Riva scored a three-yard rushing TD at the midway point of the third to give Western the lead for good. On the last drive of the third quarter, rookie defensive lineman Ricky Osei-Kusi tackled the Blues Willie Sharpe short of the first down, after a fake punt to give the Mustangs great field position deep in Toronto territory. Western kicker Lirim Hajrullahu would however miss a 19yard field goal attempt, settling for a single and a 15-9 lead heading into the final frame. Western quarterback Ben Rossong connected a 20-yard strike with second-year Mustangs receiver Andrew Thibaudeau with five minutes remaining to stretch the score to 21-9 for the visitors.

October 22, 2011 Toronto Varsity Blues 45, Waterloo Warriors 6 Varsity Centre Six different players scored as the Varsity Blues football team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 45-6 at Varsity Centre. With the win, the Blues finish the season with a 3-5 record, while the Warriors end their 2011 campaign 0-8. The win also marked Toronto’s first over Waterloo since snapping their 49-game losing streak on Sept. 1, 2008 at Varsity Centre. In his last game in the Blue and White, fifth-year quarterback Andrew Gillis was 9-of-17 for 149 yards and three touchdowns. The Toronto native also ran seven times for 47 yards and one touchdown and was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his efforts. Sophomore running back Aaron Milton of Whitby, Ont., rushed 18 times for 140 yards and one major, while rookie Emiljano Daci of Toronto had 15 carries for 137 yards and one TD. Ajax, Ont., native Paul de Pass led all players with 73 receiving yards and one touchdown. Fourth-year defensive back Dorian Munroe of Miami, Fla., led the Blues with five tackles and one interception, while fifth-year safety Willie Sharpe had three tackles and one pick in the win. The flags were flying at Varsity Centre as both teams combined for 387 yards in penalties. Toronto was whistled for 22 penalties for 216 yards, while Waterloo received 16 penalties for 171 yards, a total of 38 penalties on the day. The Blues opened the scoring on their third series of the game as Milton and Gillis led the charge down the field. Gillis would cap off the seven-play, 43-yard drive with a one-yard run into the endzone. The Blues carried that momentum over to their next drive as Gillis connected a 51-yard strike with de Pass. The duo immediately followed that up with an 18-yard touchdown reception and U of T held onto a 14-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of action. U of T extended their lead early in the second quarter, thanks in large part to a 32-yard rush by second-year fullback Stephan Boroniec. Milton then completed the series with a two-yard rushing major, his second of the season. The Blue and White struck again right before halftime. After Milton rushed the ball 38 yards deep into Waterloo territory, Gillis hit fellow fifth-year senior Sebastian Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) with a 10-yard touchdown pass. U of T held a 28-0 lead at halftime. The Blues opened the second quarter with another impressive strike. On third and six, Willie Sharpe faked the punt and ran 30 yards to Waterloo’s six-yard line. Gillis then connected a five-yard pass with fifth-year veteran Michael Prempeh to put the Blues up 35-0. Andrew Lomasney added a 33-yard field goal to give Toronto a 38-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Daci rounded out Toronto’s scoring in the last three minutes of the fourth quarter. The rookie running back ran 57 yards into Warriors territory and then scored his first career touchdown with a five-yard rush into the end zone. The Warriors finally got on the board and spoiled the shutout on their last play of the game, with a Marco Visentin one-yard rushing touchdown.

The earliest documented game of football on the University of Toronto campus occurred 151 years ago - November 9, 1861 – when the game ran under uniquely local rules that required players to bounce the ball. It was in 1877 that the rules of rugby were introduced to U of T by J.H. Mayne Campbell, giving birth to the modern Varsity Blues football team. Over the next century, the rules of rugby in Canada evolved into the modern game of Canadian football. It has been a remarkable history that includes a long list of football firsts, as well as four Grey Cups, two Vanier Cups and 25 Yates Cup championships. Most of Varsity’s early opponents were club teams such as the Hamilton Tigers and the Toronto Argonauts. U of T’s first interuniversity game was played in 1879 in Detroit against the University of Michigan, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw. Varsity’s first Canadian university contest was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the U of T front campus. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930s. Previously, nicknames were not always customary for university teams and references such as ‘The Big Blue’, ‘The Blue and White’ and ‘The Varsity Blue’ appeared interchangeably. Official interuniversity competition began in 1898, with Varsity capturing the inaugural Yates Cup, and 10 of the first 17 championships. Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 through 1911. The latter three are best known as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season.

U of T made their final Grey Cup appearance in 1926, dropping a 10-7 decision to the Ottawa Rough Riders. In the end, Varsity claimed four Grey Cup titles in all (‘09,’10,’11,’20). Through the 1920s and 30s U of T captured six Yates Cups, and would add six more before 1970. However, it was in the early 50s that U of T football attracted its largest crowds. Immediately following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21, 1950. If one team stands out at U of T, it would be the 1958 squad. The team was coached by Dalt White, and is regarded by many as the Varsity Blues strongest ever. They averaged almost 40 points a game and remain the only U of T football team to go undefeated and untied since the 1910 squad. Seven years later, White’s final season on the sidelines, the Varsity Blues claimed another first, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup championship by a 14-7 score over the University of Alberta. The 1965 team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Meanwhile, since 1965 the Varsity Blues have captured five Yates Cup titles. The Varsity Blues claimed their second Vanier Cup in 1993 under the tutelage of head coach Bob Laycoe. In a thrilling final, Glenn McCausland returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, a Vanier Cup record that still stands today, as the Varsity Blues slipped past the University of Calgary 37-34.
