ANTHONY

CA P OTO S TO

Manager of Soccer Operations

A four-time Blues team captain and two-time all-Canadian, Anthony Capotosto joined the Blues men’s soccer program as head coach in 2007 after two years as an assistant to Carmine Isacco. He was hired on a full-time basis as both the men’s and women’s head coach and manager of operations in April, 2011. Capotosto was an assistant coach to the 1998 men’s soccer Blues and after graduation also served on the Blues women’s soccer staff in 2003. He rejoined the men’s staff in 2005, and has helped guide the team to berths in two of the past three CIS championship tournaments. An OUA all-star defender in all five of his seasons with the Blues (1997, 1999-2002), Capotosto was named a first team all-Canadian in 2000 and 2001. He also claimed OUA East MVP honours in 2000 and 2001, and in his final playing season captained the Blues to their most recent OUA title. Capotosto holds a Canadian National ‘B’ coaching licence and United States Soccer Federation National ‘C’ and ‘Y’ licences. In the spring of 2008, Anthony travelled to England for a 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Ipswich Town Football Club of the English First Division. Following that, he served as an assistant coach with the Italia Shooters of the Canadian Soccer League for the duration of the summer. In 2010, Capotosto travelled back to England for another 10-day coaching apprenticeship with Plymouth Argyle FC where he worked closely with former Toronto FC head coach John Carver and Paul Mariner, TFC’s new director of player development. Anthony continues to serve as the Toronto FC Academy and currently is an assistant coach to Jason Bent (head coach) for their senior academy team that competes in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL). A graduate of U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science (2002), Capotosto earned his B.Ed at OISE in 2003. He has taught physical education at Scarborough’s Agincourt Collegiate Institute since 2003.

A solid core of veterans return to lead an exciting group of fresh talent as the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team begins their 2012 regular season this weekend (Sept. 1-2) in Ottawa. Cyprian McFarlane makes the jump from first assistant to head coach of the women’s team this season, with Anthony Capotosto continuing as manager of soccer operations, overseeing both the men’s and women’s programs. With the loss of 2011 leading goal scorer Eilish McConville, team co-captain Aisha Lewis, fourthyear veteran Jessica Fantozzi and Mel Bowen will be relied upon to lead a large crop of rookie strikers this season. Together the trio combined for 12 goals in 2011, while rookie strikers Sarah Diamond, LaShaunna Harper, Mitra Mokhtari and Christine Zwimpfer will push the veterans to compete for playing time. Third-year midfielders Caroline Murphy and Hattie Daumann, as well as sophomore Olivia Gonsalves, control Toronto’s transition game and supplement the Blues offence, with first-year players Sarah Watling and Kristian Kletke expected to see significant playing time in 2012. The Blues return an impressive back line in 2012. Team co-captain Lisa English and 2011 OUA all-star Diana Esteireiro will lead the unit that allowed only 11 goals in 16 games last season. Third-year players Zovel Hyre and Kendra Benedict, as well as sophomore standout Fatima Braimoh bolster Toronto’s defenders, with rookie Shaylea Badovinac looking to crack the roster this season. Sara Petrucci is back to lead the Blues between the pipes this year. In only her first season, the standout goalkeeper recorded seven shut outs and was named an OUA first team all-star.

The Varsity Blues women’s soccer team finished the season in third place in the OUA East, with an impressive 11-2-3 record - the team eventually dropped a 2-1 decision to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA quarter-finals. Varsity Blues head coach Anthony Capotosto as well as second-year defender Zovel Hyre earned top OUA honours this year.

In his first season with the team, Capotosto earned his first coach of the year award and Hyre was named as the 2011 East community service award winner. Four other Blues earned first team all-star status in 2011: three-time OUA MVP Eilish McConville led the Blues and ranked second in OUA scoring with 10 goals in only 12 games played this season and third-year defender Diana Esteireiro, veteran midfielder Laura Machado and rookie goalkeeper Sara Petrucci all earned their first all-star nods. Together, the trio helped to lead the Blues to a mere 11 goals against in 16 games.
