N O S SEA

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team ended the 2012-13 season with a 13-9-6 record in fifth place in the OUA East division. U of T dropped an OUA East quarter-final best-of-three series with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, falling 3-2 in double overtime in Game 3. Toronto makes the move into the OUA West division in 2013-14. Back to lead the Blues is goaltending duo Garrett Sheehan and Brett Willows. Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) played in 13 games, holding a .898 save percentage, while Willows (Rivers, Man.) saw action in 16 games and ranked third in the CIS with a .930 save percentage last season. Also looking for playing time between the pipes is first-year netminder Michael Nishi. The Toronto native played 17 games with the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s in 2011-12, going 9-6-1 with a .902 save percentage. Nishi played the last two seasons with the Guelph Storm. Third-year forward Jeff Brown returns to lead Toronto’s offensive attack. The Toronto native recorded a team-high 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points in 2012-13. He will look to fourth-year forwards Blake Boddy (Scarborough, Ont.) and Michael Markovic (Toronto) to once again be scoring threats this year. They, along with third-year standout Tyler Liukkonen (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), each notched 24 points in 28 games last season. Fellow third-year forwards Paul Van De Velde, Tyler von Engelbrechten and Kevin Deagle add great depth to Toronto’s forwards, while third-year Ryerson transfer David Harris as well as sophomores Andrew Doyle and Ernesto Valente look for playing minutes this season as well. Joining the Blues are first-year forwards Connor Cleverley, Russell Turner, Dean Klomp and Casey Knight. A native of Winnipeg, Cleverley has already proven his ability to score, posting three goals in the pre-season, while Turner, standing at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, adds great size as a power forward. Klomp is a solid twoway player and Knight provides great energy whenever he hits the ice. Second-year NCAA transfer from Clarkson University Christian Finich will join the Blues in January. The Claremont, Ont., native was named the RBC national junior player of the year in 2011-12 and was the OJHL’s most valuable player, leading the league with 104 points as a member of the Stouffville Spirit. U of T’s defensive corps will be led by the fifth-year leadership of Tyler Turcotte. The St. Catharines, Ont., native will rely on sophomore standouts Lane Werbowski, who was named to both the OUA and CIS allrookie teams in 2012-13, and Dylan Heide to continue their solid play this season. Returning defencemen Cameron Bernier, Marcus Yolevski, Matthew Oakley and Tim Halloran will be challenge by newcomers Corey Jackson and Charlie Connell for playing time in 2013-14.

The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team finished the regular season in fifth place in the OUA East division with a 13-9-6 record. The Blues headed into the December exam break just one point out of second place, but ran into a seven game losing streak that set them up for an OUA playoff series with the fourthseeded Ottawa GeeGees. After dropping Game 1, 3-2 in overtime, the Blues rebounded with a 4-0 shutout victory to force the third and deciding game. Tied 2-2 after regulation, the two teams headed into overtime, with the GeeGees notching the game-winner just 1:07 into the second extra frame. Second-year forward Jeff Brown led the team with 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 point and was named an OUA East first team all-star. Lane Werbowski had a stellar first season with the Blues, ranking 10th among OUA blueliners with 18 points and was recognized as a member of the OUA and CIS all-rookie teams.

As part of the Varsity Blues family, men’s hockey is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. Tradition, success and excellence are three words that are synonymous with Varsity Blues hockey. The hockey Blues, one of the University of Toronto’s oldest and most successful teams, were formed on January 15, 1891. In 1902-03, Toronto joined Queen’s and McGill to form Canada’s first intercollegiate hockey league. The late Conn Smythe, founder of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was a Blues coach from 1923 to 1926, the first in a number of well-known personalities to stand behind the Varsity bench. Smythe was also a player and Blues captain while studying engineering in 1915. When Smythe founded the Maple Leafs, he ‘borrowed’ the familiar Varsity Blues sweater design for his new team. Other well-known Blues coaches include former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson (1926-28), Ace Bailey (1935-40 and 1945-49), Justice Joseph Kane (1962-65) and Mike Keenan (1983-84).

Tom Watt, a major influence in Canadian hockey, led the Blues to nine of their 10 national titles during his coaching career at U of T, which spanned from 1965 to 1979, and again in 1984-85. Watt was a member of the Canadian Olympic team coaching staff in 1980 and 1988 and has been head coach of the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Blues have played a prominent role on the international hockey scene. The Varsity Grads, a team of former Blues players, captured the gold medal at the 1928 Olympic Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In 1968, the Blues earned the bronze medal for Canada at the World University Games. In February 1972, the Blues thrilled a capacity crowd at Varsity Arena with a dramatic 5-1 victory over the USSR student national team. The Varsity presence in Olympic hockey continued during the 1980s. At Lake Placid in 1980, Tom Watt was a co-coach of Team Canada with a roster that included no fewer than six Blues players: Warren Anderson, Dan D’Alvise, Cary Farelli, Joe Grant,

L

Shane Pearsall and Stelio Zupancich. Anderson and current head coach Darren Lowe were Olympians in 1984 at Sarajevo. In 1992-93, after capturing the Queen’s Cup, the Blues lost to Acadia in the national final. U of T’s most recent national title was won in 198384, when coach Mike Keenan led the Blues to a 9-1 victory over the Concordia Stingers. The Blues have won 10 national, 21 Ontario league and 10 additional titles for a total of 41 championships in the team’s history. “During my years in hockey I have been fortunate to have been part of many great traditions. However, the tradition of excellence at the University of Toronto is unsurpassed by any I have seen. It’s great people who have created this great program. Being a part of Blues Hockey is something I hold very close to my heart.” - Mike Keenan, former GM of NHL’s Florida Panthers
