TO M

FLAXMAN

Offensive Coordinator Tom Flaxman joined the Blues in 2012 as offensive coordinator. Tom began his CIS coaching career as the Acadia Axemen running backs coach in 2008 and later assumed the role of special teams coordinator. He became co-offensive coordinator in 2011 and helped guide Acadia to the Atlantic conference title. Tom has been involved with the Ontario Varsity Football League’s (OVFL) Mississauga Warriors since 2004 as an offensive assistant, co-coordinator and coordinator. During that time, he has been a member of four division and three OVFL championship teams. As a player, the standout running back won the Yates Cup as a member of the McMaster Marauders in 2003 before transferring to Acadia, where he enjoyed similar success with back-to-back Atlantic conference championship titles in 2005 and 2006.

GREG

K N OX

Defensive Coordinator Greg Knox joins the Varsity Blues coaching staff in 2013 after seven years as a defensive coordinator with the McMaster Marauders. A two-time Grey Cup champion as a member of the Calgary Stampeders, Knox helped guide McMaster to the university’s first Vanier Cup title in 2011 – his second CIS banner after winning one as a player with the Laurier Golden Hawks (1991). During his time with the Calgary Stampeders (1992-99), Knox was a multi-year captain, a 1994 CFL all-star and was nominated for the Tom Pate man of the year award for outstanding sportsmanship, dedication and contribution to the league. Following his second Grey Cup win in 1998, Knox retired but stayed active throughout the league. He served as a board member of the CFL Players Association, Calgary Stampeders Alumni Association and team representative in countless public relations functions, speaking engagements and charitable events, including Stay in School, Children’s Milk Fund and Big Brothers and Sisters. Knox holds a bachelor of arts degree in history and political science from Wilfrid Laurier University, as well as a bachelor of education from the University of Maine.

KEN

Special Teams Coordinator Ken Mazurek returns for his fifth season on the Varsity Blues coaching staff. He was a receiver for five years with the Blues and was the recipient of the team’s award of merit in 2004 and 2005. Before his career as a Varsity Blue, Ken played three years in his hometown of Lethbridge, Alta., with the Catholic Central Cougars as their quarterback, earning all-star recognition and the team’s most valuable player award. He returned to coach the Cougars for the following four spring seasons, specifically working with their quarterbacks and receivers. In 2008, Ken coached Varsity Blues starting quarterback David Hamilton, who was named a CIS offensive player of the week, ranked sixth in the nation with 2139 passing yards and was U of T’s first recipient of the CIS Russ Jackson Award. Ken also enjoyed a stint as a player-coach with the Montabaur Fighting Farmers of the German Football League in 2010.

Special Teams:

Fourth and fifth-year veteran receivers Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass will once again be key targets down the field, both having notched career-high performances in 2012. De Pass has ranked among the top five receivers in the country in yards per catch over the last three seasons and in 2012, cracked U of T’s top 10 career receiving yards list. Pierzchalski led the team in receptions for the past two seasons and represented U of T at the 2013 East West Bowl in London, Ont., in May.

For the second straight year, the Blues return 3-of-4 top defensive linemen, including Everton Williams, Abbey Olusoga and Zack Lukings. Aaron Jervis is expected to step into a starting role after a solid rookie season in 2012. They are all hungry to learn from new defensive coordinator Greg Knox, who joins the Blues from the 2012 OUA Yates Cup champion McMaster Marauders.

Special teams is a critical piece of a winning puzzle and the Blues return, and add, some key pieces to that puzzle.

All eyes will be on sophomore pivot Chris Jugovic, who is expected to make the start in the Blues season opener versus Western on Aug. 25. The Burlington, Ont., native will be backed up by a duo of very capable thirdyear quarterbacks in Richard Quittenton and Simon Nassar. Second-yard running back Lukas Gavac moves into a starting role this season. He ranked second on the team with 37 carries and third in rushing yards in 2012. Another promising running back is rookie Alex Malone and fourth-year veteran Dylan Howes makes the switch from linebacker to fullback in 2013.

Linebacker Dylan Gordon is coming off a breakout season that saw him lead the team and rank seventh in the province with 45 tackles. Veterans Christopher Johnson and Harrison Beeforth are also back to steer Toronto’s defensive unit and will be relied upon to guide promising recruits Brittley Mokube and Michael Leslie through their first seasons in the Blue and White.

Kevin Bradfield had a breakout season after topping the CIS in kick return yardage (698) and also ranked first in the OUA with 355 punt return yards. Harrison Beeforth plays on all five special team units and was named the team’s most inspirational player in 2012. Marcus Hobbs will resume punting duties this season, while rookie walk-on Stephen Pallota, a former top level provincial soccer player, is hoping to make an immediate impact as the team’s new place kicker.

Kevin Kinahan, Dave Green and Trevor Harvey comprise Toronto’s secondary. The trio combined for 73 tackles, and secondyear standout John Connors is sure to make his presence felt again after ranking second on the team with 38 tackles in 2012.

At 6-foot-5, 295 pounds, fourth-year veteran Aaron Wheaton leads Toronto’s offensive line. He, along with Lawrence Hopper, Kevin Williams and Jason Harrison will be relied on to step up big for the Blues offence and protect their quarterback. Toronto has also added talented rookies Danny Sprukulis and twin brothers Chris and Phil Heim, who will challenge for a spot on the line this season.

The Varsity Blues football team finished their 2012 campaign in a four-way tie for seventh place with a 2-6 record. Toronto opened the season with a thrilling 19-0 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at Varsity Centre. In the most exciting game of the season, a Blues comeback fell just short in a 31-29 loss to the Gryphons in Guelph. Down 3116 with 3:34 remaining, second-year quarterback Simon Nassar led the charge down the field and threw for two touchdowns to bring the game within reach but ran out of time to complete the comeback. U of T rebounded in Week 5 and improved to 2-3 with a 40-26 win over the Warriors in Waterloo. A 30-point first half, careerhigh 291 passing yards from Nassar and solid outings from rookie running back Ashton Nelson and veteran receivers Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass helped Toronto to their second victory of the year. Running back Ashton Nelson finished the season ranked sixth in the province with 643 rushing yards, while linebacker Dylan Gordon had a breakout year, ranking seventh in the OUA with 45 tackles. Kevin Bradfield led the OUA with 355 punt return and 698 kick return yards.

September 3, 2012 Toronto Varsity Blues 19, Laurier Golden Hawks 0 Varsity Centre

Sophomore quarterback Richard Quittenton scored two rushing touchdowns to lead the Varsity Blues to a 19-0 win over the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks in front of a crowd of 4,397 on Labour Day at Varsity Centre. The win marked Toronto’s first over Laurier since Oct. 5, 1996. It also marked the first time the Hawks have been shut out since 1984 and U of T’s first shut out win since 1995. Quittenton was 16-of-25 for 157 yards, while also adding 19 rushing yards and two majors. Rookie running back Ashton Nelson ran 25 times for 119 yards and earned Varsity Blues player of the game in his OUA debut. Alex Pierzchalski led all receivers with 72 yards on seven catches. John Connors as well as sophomore Spenser Stewart led the Blues with five tackles apiece. After a scoreless first quarter, a botched Laurier punt early in the second set Toronto up on the two-yard line. Quittenton punched it in from there with the first of his two on the day. Laurier charged down the field on the ensuing drive, only to have a field goal attempt blocked by fourth-year defensive back Kevin Kinahan. Veteran kicker Andrew Lomasney capped off a late 10-play, 70-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal as Toronto headed into halftime with a 9-0 advantage. Toronto’s special teams, relentless throughout the game, again pressured Laurier punter Ronnie Pfeffer early in the fourth quarter, forcing the ball deep in Hawks territory and setting up another Quittenton one-yard rushing major. Laurier conceded a safety on their next possession to give U of T the 19-0 lead.

Windsor seemed to right their ship after being upset in Week 2. They amassed 555 yards of total offence to Toronto’s 309. The Blues didn’t make things easy for themselves, committing four turnovers to Windsor’s two, and allowing five Lancer sacks on the day. Windsor native Austin Kennedy was 14-of-21 for 300 yards and two majors for the visitors, while Blues sophomore quarterback, Richard Quittenton, completed seven of his 22 passes for 115 yards, and rushed 12 times for 89 yards in the loss. Veteran defensive lineman Abiodun Olusoga tallied a game-high eight tackles, while first-year defensive back John Connors had six and was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his efforts. The Lancers opened the scoring early after Austin Crumb intercepted a Quittenton pass deep in Toronto territory, setting up a three-yard Mitch Dender rushing touchdown. Blues veteran kicker and Toronto native Andrew Lomasney responded with a 26-yard field goal on the ensuing drive. Windsor struck again late in the first quarter when Kennedy connected with Jordan Brescacin for a 57-yard touchdown. The Lancers led 14-3 heading into the second quarter. The visiting squad extended their lead with an Evan Pszczonak 18-yard touchdown reception and a Dan Cerino 19-yard field goal. Gilbert Stewart of Brampton, Ont., added a one-yard rushing major in the final minutes to give Windsor a 31-4 lead at the half. September 22, 2012 Guelph Gryphons 31, Toronto Varsity Blues 29 Alumni Stadium Trailing 31-16 with 3:34 remaining, the Varsity Blues football team rallied to bring the game within two points, but fell just short in a 31-29 loss to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, September 22 at Alumni Stadium. The loss moved Toronto to 1-3, while the Gryphons improved to 3-1 after Week 4 of OUA football action. Sophomore quarterback Simon Nassar came into the game to replace an injured Richard Quittenton and proved he has what it takes to play with the best. Down by 15 with under three minutes to go, the Toronto native connected a 25-yard strike with Todd Inkila to bring the game within reach. U of T’s defence shut down Guelph’s ensuing drive, giving Toronto the ball back with 1:48 to go. It looked grim for the Blues but a 15-yard Gryphons pass interference penalty gave Toronto new life. Nassar completed the 12-play, 57-yard drive with a 27-yard pass to third-year receiver Paul de Pass, who scored his second major of the day. Unfortunately for the Blues, the Gryphons came up with a huge stop on the two-point convert attempt and secured the victory in front of a boisterous homecoming crowd. Nassar went 8-for-13 and 106 yards and two majors, while Quittenton was 6-of-13 for 54 yards and one TD, and also rushed 10 times for 54 yards before leaving the game. Rookie running back Ashton Nelson came up with a game-high 106 rushing yards on 17 carries. De Pass led the Blues with five catches for 67 yards and two majors, while Inkila ended the game with three receptions for 36 yards and one touchdown. Second-year linebacker Dylan Gordon had a breakout game with a team-high 7.5 tackles, while defensive lineman Everton Williams recorded seven in the loss. Both teams combined for 351 yards in penalties on the day - Toronto took 18 penalties (153 yards), while the Gryphons were flaged 11 times for 198 yards.

September 29, 2012 Toronto Varsity Blues 40, Waterloo Warrior 26 University Stadium Sophomore quarterback Simon Nassar threw for 291 yards and two majors in leading the Varsity Blues football team to a big 40-26 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 29 at University Stadium. It was a game of career-highs for the Varsity Blues, with Nassar leading the way. The Toronto native was 22-of-29 for 298 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing three times for 35 yards and one major in his first start in the Blue and White. Rookie running back Ashton Nelson ran for a season-best 122 yards on 20 carries and also scored his first career touchdown. Alex Pierzchalski made 11 catches for a career-high 147 yards and notched his first TD of 2012, while fellow third-year receiver Paul de Pass racked up 97 yards on seven receptions. Linebacker Dylan Gordon and lineman Everton Williams led the Blues with five and six tackles, respectively, in the win. After the Warriors opened the scoring on a Michael Robson 48-yard touchdown reception, the Blues battled back to regain a lead that wouldn’t diminish. Nelson capped off a seven-play, 73-yard drive with a four-yard run into the end zone, before Nassar connected a 21-yard strike with Pierzchalski. U of T held a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Toronto continued their offensive push as rookie running back Lukas Gavac scored his first career major on a 10-yard reception from Nassar just two minutes into the second quarter. On third and long, the Blues pulled out a trick play midway through the quarter as Marcus Hobbs faked a punt and connected with Trevor Harvey for the first down. That set up a one-yard rushing touchdown from veteran running back Stephan Boroniec. The Warriors added a major with five seconds remaining and Toronto carried a 30-14 lead into halftime. Nassar tallied the only points of the third quarter on a 15-yard run into the end zone. Toronto and Waterloo exchanged field goals to open the fourth. The Warriors then began to rally with a major from Marco Visentin, his second of the day, but it wasn’t enough as the Blues notched their second win of the season.

The earliest documented game of football on the University of Toronto campus occurred 152 years ago - November 9, 1861 – when the game was played under uniquely local rules that required players to bounce the ball. It was in 1877 that the rules of rugby were introduced to U of T by J.H. Mayne Campbell, giving birth to the modern Varsity Blues football team. Over the next century, the rules of rugby in Canada evolved into the modern game of Canadian football. It has been a remarkable history that includes a long list of football firsts, as well as four Grey Cups, two Vanier Cups and 25 Yates Cup championships. Most of Varsity’s early opponents were club teams such as the Hamilton Tigers and the Toronto Argonauts. U of T’s first interuniversity game was played in 1879 in Detroit against the University of Michigan, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw. Varsity’s first Canadian university contest was in the fall of 1881, when McGill scored a victory by ‘two tries to nothing’ on the U of T front campus. As for the nickname ‘Blues’, it seems that this reference wasn’t generally used until the 1930s. Previously, nicknames were not always customary for university teams and references such as ‘The Big Blue’, ‘The Blue and White’ and ‘The Varsity Blue’ appeared interchangeably. Official interuniversity competition began in 1898, with Varsity capturing the inaugural Yates Cup, and 10 of the first 17 championships. Varsity also claimed national titles in 1905 and 1909 through 1911. The latter three are best known as they represented the first Grey Cup championships, which is now the pinnacle of the Canadian Football League season.

FOOTBALL

L

U of T made their final Grey Cup appearance in 1926, dropping a 10-7 decision to the Ottawa Rough Riders. In the end, Varsity claimed four Grey Cup titles in all (‘09,’10,’11,’20). Through the 1920s and 30s U of T captured six Yates Cups, and would add six more before 1970. However, it was in the early 50s that U of T football attracted its largest crowds. Immediately following the final expansion of Varsity Stadium in 1950, the Varsity Blues averaged 25,593 spectators per game and attracted a university record crowd of 26,764 for a game versus the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on October 21, 1950. If one team stands out at U of T, it would be the 1958 squad. The team was coached by Dalt White, and is regarded by many as the Varsity Blues strongest ever. They averaged almost 40 points a game and remain the only U of T football team to go undefeated and untied since the 1910 squad. Seven years later, White’s final season on the sidelines, the Varsity Blues claimed another first, winning the inaugural Vanier Cup championship by a 14-7 score over the University of Alberta. The 1965 team was inducted into the U of T Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Meanwhile, since 1965 the Varsity Blues have captured five Yates Cup titles. The Varsity Blues claimed their second Vanier Cup in 1993 under the tutelage of head coach Bob Laycoe. In a thrilling final, Glenn McCausland returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown, a Vanier Cup record that still stands today, as the Varsity Blues slipped past the University of Calgary 37-34.
