The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s soccer team has high hopes for the 2013 season, which kicks off on Saturday, August 31 as they host the Carleton Ravens at 1 p.m. at Varsity Centre. The season culminates on home turf as U of T hosts of the 2013 CIS women’s soccer championship, November 7-10, at Varsity Centre. Manager of Soccer Operations, Anthony Capotosto, resumes the role of head coach of the women’s team this season. Capotosto was named the OUA East women’s coach of the year in 2011 and recognizes the importance of hosting the national tournament in 2013. “We know we are hosting nationals and we are preparing for a full season leading up to the event,” said Capotosto, who enters his seventh season with the U of T soccer program. “We want to make sure when we reach the championship that we’ve done everything we can do. Having the privilege of playing this tournament on our home field is so important to our program. It will undoubtedly be an exciting year.” The Blues have great depth in their defensive corps as 2012 OUA East all-stars Diana Esteireiro, Lisa English and Fatima Braimoh return to the roster. Esteireiro has a strong kick and will again be relied on to lead Toronto’s corner and free kick opportunities, while English, a returning cocaptain of the squad, and Braimoh, provide a solid backline for the Blues. New defenders to the team include Christine Mulligan (Vancouver), who brings a solid physical presence to the field, and Laura Krkachovski (Markham, Ont.), who possess great poise and composure with the ball. Third-year goalkeeper and two-time OUA all-star Sara Petrucci once again leads the Blues between the pipes. Petrucci notched five shut outs and added one in the playoffs in the 2012 season. Veteran Olivia Gonsalves is back to lead Toronto’s midfield. The Scarborough, Ont., native initiates the transition from the back line and will rely on newcomers Nicole Parkes (Sarnia, Ont.) and Claudia Piazza (Brampton, Ont.) to make an impact in the middle. U of T’s strikers are bolstered by Aisha Lewis and LaShaunna Harper. Lewis enters her fourth season, her second as the squad’s co-captain, and ranked second on the team with six goals last season. Harper is coming off a breakout rookie year with the Blues after leading the team and ranking fifth in the province with 11 goals in 16 games. The duo will provide guidance to incoming players Brenda Murillo (Richmond, B.C.) and Alexandra Rocha (Brampton, Ont.). Murillo adds great speed to the right side as she replaces graduate Mel Bowen, while Rocha has a strong shot and adds mobility across the field.
