John Homans Lecture:

Carotid Surgery “Trials and Tribulations” 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014 Hynes Convention Center Boston, MA Presented by

Wesley S. Moore, MD Division of Vascular Surgery UCLA, Los Angeles, CA Introduction by

Julie Ann Freischlag, MD SVS President UC Davis School of Medicine, Sacramento, CA

John Homans, MD 1877–1954 John Homans was born in Boston, Massachusetts, educated at Harvard and Harvard Medical School, and completed a residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He received additional training in Baltimore, Maryland, and London, England before his return to Boston to join Harvey Cushing at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in 1912. At the end of his career, he spent a year in New Haven, Connecticut as the Carmalt Visiting Professor at Yale University. After World War II, he returned to work to the Bent Brigham Hospital. John Homans, MD, was one of the specialty’s most accomplished surgeons. His successes include six editions of Homans’ Textbook of Surgery and one edition of Circulatory Diseases of the Extremities, focusing on disorders in the direction of return circulation and the disease of the veins and lymphatics. According to Wylie Barker, it was Dr. Homans who offered definitive proof that pulmonary emboli could arise from clinically bland calf thrombosis by matching the end of a massive coiled embolus found in the pulmonary artery at autopsy with the end of the fragment remaining adherent in the popliteal vein. Long interested in venous disease, he was the first to advocate ligation of the femoral vein for prevention of fatal pulmonary embolism. He popularized high ligation of the great saphenous vein and division of all the branches of the saphenous vein in the groin for varicosities. In 1916, Homans was the first to differentiate between simple varicose veins and the “postphlebitic” type that developed following deep vein thrombosis. Dorsiflexion of the foot that causes calf pain was named after him to be the “Homans’ sign” for the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis. Another of his fields of interest was lymphedema, where he used a modification of the Kondoleon operation.

About the John Homans, MD Lectureship

Dr. Homans was a charter SVS member and in 1948, presented a paper before the SVS membership, “Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism.” The Homans Lectureship was established at the fourth SVS annual meeting in San Francisco on June 25, 1950, in his honor, which was to be presented from time to time by distinguished vascular surgeons.

Roy K. Greenberg, MD

Roy Greenberg Distinguished Lecture: New Horizons in Aortic Disease – The Lasting Legacy of a Visionary Innovator 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014 Hynes Convention Center Boston, MA Presented by

Gustavo S. Oderich, MD Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN Introduction by

Julie Ann Freischlag, MD SVS President UC Davis School of Medicine Sacramento, CA

Dr. Roy K. Greenberg’s extensive contributions to the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) and vascular surgery are honored with a new lecture series during the Vascular Annual Meeting: The Roy Greenberg Distinguished Lecture. This is the second lecture in the series. Dr. Greenberg was presented the SVS Medal for Innovation in Vascular Surgery during the 2012 Vascular Annual Meeting because he exemplified the spirit and practice of innovation, and contributed in particular in aortic endograft repair. His work was unique, profusely promulgated in academic publication, and recognized the world over. Roy K. Greenberg, MD, received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine after completing his undergraduate degree at Cornell University. He completed his surgical internship and residency at the University of Rochester, where he became chief resident and instructor in surgery. His clinical training continued at the University of Rochester with a fellowship in vascular surgery, and further training in interventional radiology in Malmo, Sweden. He joined Cleveland Clinic in 1999 where he held joint appointments in the Imaging Institute Department of Diagnostic Radiology and the Lerner Research Institute Department of Biomedical Engineering. He was also director of endovascular research and the Cleveland Clinic Peripheral Vascular Core Laboratory. In 2009, he was awarded the Master Clinician Award at the Cleveland Clinic, after incidentally being awarded the Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award the previous four consecutive years. International recognition of Dr. Greenberg’s contributions has come in the form of honorary memberships in the vascular societies of South Africa, Great Britain and Ireland. That same year, he was invited to be the prestigious Kinmonth Lecturer on behalf of the British/Irish Vascular Societies. Dr. Greenberg authored or co-authored more than 200 articles in peer– reviewed medical journals and authored 50-plus medical textbook chapters and several books. He was on the editorial board of several journals, including the Journal of Endovascular Therapy: Annals of Vascular Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery. He served as a reviewer for Circulation, Lancet, Journal of Vascular Surgery, and Journal of the American College of Surgeons, among others. His vascular surgeries have been telecast live internationally and nationally to medical conferences and symposia, and he frequently was an invited lecturer at international and national medical conferences. His focus on research has been the development and assessment of endovascular devices for treating aortic diseases, and he holds more than 50 patents on devices developed from his research. His fundamental engineering research has been both productive and grounded his ‘translational research in aortic endografting.’ He has developed a mathematical model for processing and fusing imaging modalitiest o facilitate complex aortic endograft repair. He has served as national principal investigator for several endograft trials and holds no less than four personal IDEs related to endograft repair; most notable among these was his work with fenestrated and branched endografting. Finally, Dr. Greenberg’s service to the vascular surgery specialty and SVS goes beyond his surgical innovations. He chaired the SVS Postgraduate Education Committee for several years and was very active in planning the Vascular Annual Meeting. His efforts in training other vascular surgeons in the spectrum of endovascular therapies have moved vascular surgery forward as a specialty.
