SITE ANALYSIS..........................................................................................6

The Miami Street Art Museum is located in a newly developed area of Miami, the up and coming art district, Wynwood. Wynwood is a unique area with a very industrial character from all the warehouses that have pre-existed. Nowadays, it is an area that holds great artistic value, as it is housing a great amount of street art, but is also a very popular spot for an alternative night in Miami. The goal of the MSAM is to create a collaboration space for both the Art Basel Foundation and Montana Cans. By creating a research and development lab for new art technologies, and also experimentation studios for artists and products, the combined works of the two companies will push these artists to new heights with their designs. Lastly the sponsored artists will be promoted as their creations will be exhibited within the MSAM. We want to show to the world how street art and architecture can coexist without the one distorting the other.

Site Analysis - Existing Conditions

Miami Street Art Museum

Home to an existing warehouse / industrial building and creative space, the site features numerous murals created by the local artist community. With a protective wall facing the street, the building creates a large barrier between itself and the neighborhood. Although those occupying the space were extremely outgoing, the building they inhabited begged to differ. After spending five days in Miami examining the site and neighborhood, measurements were verified for design. Located next to decommissioned train tracks, the site sits on the edge of the Wynwood neighborhood looking to draw the community off the main avenue.

Thesis

Miami Street Art Museum

Creating a space where Architecture and Street Art can coexist and reinforce one another rather than distort eachother. By combing a Fixed Research and Development center, with an Ambulatory Circulation and Gallery space, large cantilevers and natural light connects the two programs and draws the public through its galleries.

Case Study - de Young Museum

Resembling several limbs or extensions of fingers, the de Young Museum orients itself within Golden Gate Park in San Fransisco, California. Three parallel bands (or fingers) are joined together with courtyards acting as lightwells within. Lighting is used to direct and congregate people around the main entrances as well as most important galleries.
