SELECTED PROJECTS

1. HOTEL OASIS BLUE

Hotel Oasis Blue

Facing a busy arterial road of the city and flanked by commercial buildings on either side with a residential building at the rear, this small plot for a business hotel had a height limitation of 12 m. The hotel is planned in six levels with common areas occupying the basement & ground levels and four levels of rooms above and a conference room on the topmost floor. Rooms are arranged along the corners with a 4’6” wide passage in the middle. Type:

Design Problem

My Role

The client’s requirements included a large banquet hall of 1000 sq ft in addition to 36 rooms and other facilities. Since the banquet hall would have large gatherings, it is planned at basement & its access is directly from the main entrance. The irregular shaped site was the biggest design challenge. The site is chamfered along the road in north, hence the design of building follows the site and looks like a trapezium in plan.

I was involved in the later stages of project like working drawings, details, site coordination & management after the Architectural design was mostly finished. I also worked on the interior details of the project. As it was one of my very first project, I visited the site daily & the part I enjoyed the most was getting to see the actual conversion of drawings to reality on site.

Elevation Design This facade design grew out of a desire for a building that merges contextually with the greens of the earth and the blues of the sky. The external expression has been emphasised as a reflection of its surrounding scale: factoring in an outlook that is more outside-in than inside-out; hence the outdoor is designed to be seamless with sculptural spines and articulated outlines. Openings at ground floor allow natural light into the public spaces at daytime and are hence made of glass. The Cafe is a shared resource that blurs public and private spaces.

Hotel Oasis Blue

Due to limited open space on site and in the vicinity, a continuous green space has been conceived at the entrance.

Interior Design The interior design is an extension of the architecture. Entering the lobby, guests experience a clear transition from outdoors to in. The ceiling of hotel lobby is provided with vertical strips of lights. Central passage has alluminium bar ceiling similar to the facade. All the circulation spaces are naturally lit & ventilated rendering the building energy efficient. Banquet Hall in the basement is kept white with few recessed portions in the ceiling where modern chandelier are placed. I also worked on the Art Decoration of the project, designing the frames for Rooms and lobby which reflects design philosphy of the project.

2. AMBIENCE CAFE & RESTRO

Ambience Cafe & Restro

Situated in the outer part of Bhopal called Bairagarh, R-Ambience is a modern aesthetic lounge that exudes luxury, style & comfort. The project consists of two parts: an open to sky cafe at first floor and a party space at mezzanine floor linked by a bridge. Drawing from a color palette of yellows and whites signifying happiness and simplicity, these colors are aligned with harmony that are then juxtaposed against mono-chromatic flooring. Type:

Design Problem

My Role

After learning about the client’s plan to build an open cafe above the existing restaurant, we proposed to place a metal structure at top of the current construction. Between the posts made of 6 MS rectangular pipes, a series of yellow jaali is provided to give partial visibility from inside. Tensile Ferrari cloth was selected as the roof material. It was important for us to create an open, light and airy space to emphasize a connection to the outdoors.

I worked from the initial design development of the project to working drawings, site management, material selection and the final stages till decoration. Many changes were intantaneuously made on site. Regular site visits and coordination of the project provided me with the knowledge of fabricated structures and working on details with MS.

3. BREADS & STORIES

Bread & Stories

Nestled within Gulmohar area in South Bhopal, site has a total area of 480 sq ft. Owners of the business wanted to bring serious artesian delicacies to their customers in a small space, emphasising focus on a good overall experience, hence the brand “Breads & Stories. Beyond the mere selling of products, the store is conceived as an extension to the public space and a place where to meet and gather with people. Type:

Design Problem & My Role The client approched us with an idea of Dairy cum cafe shop in ground floor of a building. Most challenging part of the whole design process was the width of site i.e. only 10 ft. We wanted to bring attentiveness to the design specific for its function and context. Making the most out of the tiny spaces by turning constraints into design features, we decided to provide a transparent facade with attractive outdoor seating & better product display.

4. BAKE-N-SHAKE

Bake-n-Shake

The project is located in a well-known area of Bhopal called New Market. This cafe had pseudo-classic interior. Over time, there was wear and tear in the property and the rush could not be handled with the previous layout. Through the redesign of the aging cafe, a welcoming and functional cafe & restaurant created. The post COVID lockdown phase provided with ample time for renovation of a usually very busy cafe. Type:

Design Problem & My Role How to upgrade a running cafe is a problem that each cafe owner thinks about. The whole interior work was supposed to be quickly finished in a few nights with the cafe running in daytime. So we adapted a design strategy with mostly pre-fabricated items. Plants and herbs were installed to offer visual and aromatic relief. The cafe will welcome people to come in not only for quality coffee, but also to enjoy a green oasis.

5. SALTWATER PUB

Saltwater Pub

The new bar is proposed in the basement, located in Malviya Nagar, Bhopal. The project proposes to occupy the small space by a creating thematic ambience, where you can consume the precious liquid. The space is characterized by its ceiling, which highlights the existing construction, supplemented by a minimalist and discreet furnishing. The low ceiling was one of the main challenges of the project. Type:

Design Problem Our task was to change the schematic layout of the premises without changing its toilet facilities location & to design the interior including the entrance eloquently. We got inspired by the Industrial Aesthetics. This concept pushed us to use raw materials and bright lights to create a special rebellious atmosphere in the bar area. Softer and tactile materials have been used in the main guests’ areas to provide comfort and cosy atmosphere.

Tathastu Gems Lounge

This new store for the Tahthastu Gems is located in Malviya Nagar, Bhopal. The space is a story-teller, and also a tiny gallery of gems. As Gems are tiny in size and have a very high cost, there is always a considerable risk involved in the business which was cosidered throughout the whole design process. Most of the furniture units were especially designed on site as per the requirements. Type:

Design The space is divided into two parts. On the right side of the entrance we placed owner’s cabin and vastu consultant’s desk. On the left, display & cash counter with sofas are provided. Back wall of display counter is provided with display cabinets. Considering partial visiblilty of store from the street, a large round chandelier is provided above the cash counter. The lighting utilized in this space has brightened up the entire space.

Design Problem Store is divided into four quadrants with owner’s cabin in the South-West quadrant alongside veneer display in the South- East. Staircase was provided in North-West quadrant which occupies back entrance of the current store on ground floor. White and wooden finishes are used with blue as an accent color in display panels and the south wall. One of the main goals was to design a fresh and distinguished space.

We were commissioned to design the second store for Krishna Timbers, to emphasise their established identity. The store is located on the first floor above the current store in MP Nagar, Bhopal. Customer experience was of the utmost importance and guided all design decisions from conceptualization till completion. As veneer selection is an important design decision and takes much time, a large space for Veneer display is provided for the customers.

Located in New Market, Bhopal, this project is the back office of Jewellery Retail Store of Tanishq. My Role

The project is approached from a net and universal interpretation of an ordinary space, designed to allow a traditional distribution in spaces of greater or lesser size: office desk, meeting rooms and waiting area. In contrast, an alternative work environment is proposed where fluidity, flexibility and adaptability generate a dynamic and open space for the multiplicity of activities and the simultaneity of visuals.

As this project was a renovation of a Clothing retail store, I was involved from site documentation to later stages which involved • demolition of mezzanine floor to create a double heighted showroom at ground floor. • shifting of staircase as per vastu considerations. • preparation of interior drawings, site coordination & management.

Design

My Role

The singularity of the design lies in the combination of various materials (steel, brick, concrete and wood) with a minimal but high quality decoration (including a selection of modern furniture mixed with vintage pieces) creating a casual and intimate atmosphere. The implementation of stone floor of varied layout emphasized the division between the rooms. Contrasting colors were added in soft supplements like a sofa or pouf upholstering.

I feel lucky to work on this kind of creative prooject at the very intial stage of my career. I worked on Interior design of the project, site coordination, material selection & preparing BOQs. I visited the project site almost daily which had been a great source of learning. I guided the construction of exposed brick wall of Drawing Room area & top floor on site.

10. KUSHWAHA RESIDENCE

Kushwaha Residence

The Villa is located on a 100 X 110 ft plot in a residential condominium “Whisper Palms” in Bhopal. The project design started from the intention of creating large rooms which comfortably would promote dialogue between the exterior and the interior of the residence, using an architectural language inspired by contemporary style. The adopted layout was guided by integration of spatial and visual flow between the indoor and outdoor areas. Type:

My Role

The Villa comprises of three floors with basement having store, library, office & entertainment area. On ground we provided two bedrooms along with Drawing Room, LivingDining & Kitchen. Pool contributes as an aesthetic element in the elevation. On the upper floor, there are TV room, gym, spa, and 3 suites. Gym and spa have windows along the balconies. The sloping roof provides sufficient height, for efficient thermal comfort.

My work in this project involved carrying the Architectural Design forward from concept stage. I worked on the following stages • Architectural Design • Working Drawings • Elevation Design - preparing detailed sketchup model for 3D visualisation • Drafting Contracts, Estimation & other documents

11. NAGPAL MANSION

Nagpal Residence

The sprawling mansion have a built-up area of 10,000 sq.ft. on a 1 acre site. The site is positioned on the outskirts of Bhopal directly overlooking vast forest area. We planned a modern structure that sits at the middle of the trapezium shaped plot, with a landscaped garden on one side & back. We approached to create a house with continuity between internal and external living which plays off the mood of the climate and surrounding landscape. Type:

Design Problem & My Role The brief was to create a 5 bedroom home where nature pervades but also to respond to the practical needs and complexities of family life. The thinking was towards massive open-plan and double-volume spaces and function based zoning. As site is located on the outskirts in a very low density area, security of the house was an important concern while designing. I worked on concept development & design proposal of the project.

40

Concept - 1

Concept - 2

Bhopal

First concept was a closed layout with an approach towards a Outside-In tHouse. The house consists of two major blocks with separate courtyards. One accommodates private areas such as living room, bedrooms, dinning & staircase whereas the other accommodates formal seating, rumpus room and swimming pool. Kitchen is strategically placed at the intersection so that it serves both areas. Most of the spaces in public areas are double heighted to provide a sense of more open and inviting space. Office block is placed at the side of Entrance Lobby with entrance from outside as well as from the family courtyard.

Second concept is to approach a freeflow of spaces into one another and an house of Inside-Out nature. A linear arrangement of spaces connected by corridors on an inverted V-Shape plan overlooking inviting open greenspace with a pool or a waterbody. We attempted to create Indoor and outdoor spaces that are seamlessly connected with the edges of disparate spaces subtly blurred. Ground floor accommodates formal sitting, living room, dinning, kitchen, office, two bedrrom and pool whereas three bedrooms and an entertainment hall connected via corridor are provided on first floor.

12. VINEET JI RESIDENCE

Vineet Ji Residence

The residence occupies a 30 x 60 ft plot on the suburban edge of Bhopal - with a reserve greenspace on the rear and front. It provided an advantage of getting sufficient ventialation from front and rear without depending on sides. So, the site creates an interesting opportunity to flip a typical suburban house condition and open up the major areas to the open space. Type:

Design Problem

My Role

The client approched with brief of a 6 BHK residence. Spatially, the house is planned in a simple manner. The internal programme of the small house treats the experience of airiness and the ‘feel of space’ as sacrosanct. The planning reduced passages, and favoured a more open-plan typology. The connections to the outside are constant, in the form of small and large openings, semiopen decks and sheltered balconies.

I worked on this project from beginning and was involved in following works over the period of time : • Architectural Planning. • Coordination with structural engineer. • Elevation Design - preparing drawings, 3D model & rendering. • Site coordinaition • Preparing detailed Working Drawings.

A floating column is provided from first floor to create a triple heighted terrace without compromising with a column in middle of parking area. The cantilevered part of the roof is made of fabricated structure.

Chunabhatti Residence

The “L-shape site of 9000 sq.ft. is located in Chunabhatti, Bhopal, where the land plot is very tight for four individual houses. The land belonged to four brothers, who are very close, yet, have a different lifestyle. They wish to live close to each other and spend some time together. However, they also wish to establish a private distance when they need. We worked out a design by using a simple flat typology. Type:

14. ARERA RESIDENCE

Arera Residence

This project is a beautifully integrated villa that house a large family. The 60 x 100 ft site is located facing west, with all other three sides abutting adjacent properties. Within this, the three main constituents — facing west, south, and east — are arranged in a C, encircling a central green courtyard that actually functions as a common space; an open-air living room. This is where the family can congregate. Type:

Design Problem

My Role

The client approached us with a brief for a 5 BHK vastu compliant home at the location of their current Residence. Alonside general requirements, brief demanded the house to have a 300 sq.ft. hall for owner’s guest from village areas, two servant rooms (with separate kitchen & toilet) and all the modern amenities like Entertainment Room, Gym. Other specifications included room of owner’s mother to be on ground floor with attached private garden.

PLANNING

Arera Residence

The plan of house is developed in a linear manner. But it can also be viewed from other perspective with a courtyard as focal point at the center and all other spaces around it. A heavier mass was planned south of the courtyard to ensure a shaded and accessible open space. Common areas occupies ground floor. Bedrooms and amenities are planned on the floors above. Servant Room is on the second floor and have a separate entrance via spiral stair block.

Design Problem & My Role The design brief was to create a modern and minimalist design that balances beauty and functionality. I documented the site and started working directly on the 3D model after understanding the client’s vision. It was important for us to create a coherent and tight design style. My role in the project was limited to design & preparing 3D model of the same. 3D views & site coordination was dealt by interns & visualisation professional.

ART DECORATIONS

Art Decorations

Other than Architecture, two other classical branches of visual art, painting & sculpture have their own importance and fulfills non-motivated functions of a project. I think wall art have much significance in interior design. With the right decoration hung on the wall, any space can be transformed from plain and boring to unique and personal. It provides a focal point, or a single design element that will instantly draw the eye into the space and give the viewer a sense of what to expect. Too often in interior design, we see wall art treated as an afterthought. For me it is an opportunity to showcase the vision behind the architectural & interior design of a project in Frames. I very much like to create these wall arts on my own, especially for the projects I have worked on. Knowledge of various photo editing softwares provides a great advantage for me to create a series of artwork with unique theme for a project.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I believe everyone has a fire inside them, which is in its purest form and needs a way to be expressed in the form of art. For me, Photography is one of the mediums of doing this. It is a way of expressing my perspectives, vision and way of thinking. Photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place. I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and more to do with the way you see them.
