Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) celebrated the Teen Awards on October 18, 2011 at the City Playhouse Theatre, honouring the Early Harvest Competition winners, the top reader from the Teen Summer Reading Challenge and VPL’s teen volunteers. All teens received a certificate recognizing their achievements and the 25 Early Harvest Competition winners were presented with cash prizes of up to $100 for their creative accomplishments in the categories of writing, sketching and painting, photography and videography. This year’s award ceremony featured lively performances by Teresa Tucci and Adam Cesarone, two of the finalists from the new talent show - SHOWUP! Vaughan 2011. Both performances were full of energy and were much enjoyed by the audience. After the ceremony, families and friends had the opportunity to view all the winning entries in the Early Harvest Competition and the winners of the Short Story and Poetry categories even had a chance to meet with their judges, Deborah Kerbel and Elana Wolff. The Early Harvest magazine which features all the award-winning entries is available online and at all seven branches of VPL. Watch for news on Early Harvest 2012 at your local library and at www.vaughanpl.info. Entry forms will be available online in the New Year.

@ the Board Greetings from Michael McKenzie Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board

Welcome to the latest edition of @ the Library. As we near the end of 2011, we were delighted to receive the news that VPL has been shortlisted for the Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Culture’s Angus Mowat Award of Excellence for our Teen Engagement initiatives. This award recognizes excellence in service delivery and this nomination acknowledges the hard work and dedication of our staff in renewing VPL’s commitment to serve the teens in the City of Vaughan by offering exciting programming, relevant services and updated, teen-friendly spaces. In 2011 we started our migration from our obsolete security system to a new system. This may have caused some inconveniences for a few customers. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and support during this transition. Once fully implemented, this new system will offer improved convenience for material self check-out and improve the security and protection of VPL’s resources. An important duty of the Board is to look forward to ensure that we maintain our library materials. To prepare for infrastructure investments for library materials the Board has approved the creation of a reserve contribution fund for the purchase of new library materials. Annual contributions to this reserve fund will be important to meet future requirements to replace and maintain the VPL collection and address the expected growth of the VPL over the foreseeable future. As we close the book on the year 2011 and look forward to 2012 we remain dedicated to our mission to "offer welcoming destinations that educate, excite and empower our community" and provide more reasons to see you @ the Library.

2011
