Welcome to @ the Library. We are living in interesting times where some things change quicker than expected and others take longer. By now I had hoped that we would be celebrating the opening of VPL’s eighth library but unfortunately the building of the new library in the North Thornhill Community Centre is taking longer than anticipated. The Library Board, library staff, Council and City staff are all working together to ensure that construction of the new library can come on-stream as quickly as possible and hopefully begin in 2012. In other news, what has advanced quicker than expected has been our ability to incorporate new and exciting technology into our Libraries. By fall, VPL will have 29 iPads available for customers to borrow for in-library use from our new iPad vending machines being installed at Pierre Berton and Bathurst Clark Resource Libraries. VPL is the first library in Canada to offer these iPad Vending machines to their customers! We have integrated new assistive technologies at the resource libraries that include software that makes printed or electronic text readily available to people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as reading, writing and learning software for individuals with learning difficulties or for English language learners. Another first for VPL will occur on Monday, September 10 and the first Monday in October and November when Maple library will host a special meeting place for home-based business owners and entrepreneurs to meet, mingle or bring their laptops and just hang out in the company of other entrepreneurs. We are pleased to offer new opportunities and resources that Enrich Inspire and Transform providing more reasons to see you @ the Library.

READING BUDDIES Your child will be matched up with a qualified volunteer to meet weekly for one hour over ten weeks. During that hour, your child and the volunteer will use books, computers and reading games to share the fun of reading. Applications are due Friday, September 21. For ages 7-12. READY FOR RESEARCH Teachers are invited to bring their classes to the library for an informative presentation about doing research using the library catalogue, databases and the Internet. For Grades 6 to 8. Book an appointment with a Youth Services Librarian. READY, SET, KINDERGARTEN! Thursdays, 11 - 11:30 a.m. Join us for a fun-filled circle time, where kids listen to stories, sing songs, and start learning some of the social skills needed to get them ready for Kindergarten. ADULT PROGRAMS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR’S TESTIMONY Sunday, November 4, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Dr. Mladen Vranić was born in Zagreb in 1930. After the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia, the Vranic family were able to flee to an Italian-controlled zone. They were eventually sent to concentration camps under Fascist Italy’s jurisdiction. Dr. Vranić immigrated to Canada in 1963 and began a distinguished career in diabetes research. He has recently been named as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contribution to medical research. No registration required. BOARDROOM: The Boardroom seats 18 at the table but the room can accommodate an additional 12 chairs placed around the room. Beginning this fall, you will be able to do just that with Vaughan Public Libraries’ (VPL) all new iPad vending machines! VPL is the first library in Canada to feature this state-of-the-art technology. With these machines, you can easily check out an iPad for use in the library with your library card.

using your Getting Your Library Card Library cards are free of charge to anyone who lives, owns property, works or goes to school in the City of Vaughan. You can join Vaughan Public Libraries in person at any branch and online at www.vaughanpl.info. Whether you apply for your library card in person or online, you will need to bring one of the following to verify your information: • proof of your home address in Vaughan • registration at a school or college in Vaughan, or • proof of employment in Vaughan Children can get their own library cards. Welcome to @ the Library. We are living in interesting times where some things change quicker than expected and others take longer. By now I had hoped that we would be celebrating the opening of VPL’s eighth library but unfortunately the building of the new library in the North Thornhill Community Centre is taking longer than anticipated. The Library Board, library staff, Council and City staff are all working together to ensure that construction of the new library can come on-stream as quickly as possible and hopefully begin in 2012. In other news, what has advanced quicker than expected has been our ability to incorporate new and exciting technology into our Libraries. By fall, VPL will have 29 iPads available for customers to borrow for in-library use from our new iPad vending machines being installed at Pierre Berton and Bathurst Clark Resource Libraries. VPL is the first library in Canada to offer these iPad Vending machines to their customers! We have integrated new assistive technologies at the resource libraries that include software that makes printed or electronic text readily available to people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as reading, writing and learning software for individuals with learning difficulties or for English language learners. Another first for VPL will occur on Monday, September 10 and the first Monday in October and November when Maple library will host a special meeting place for home-based business owners and entrepreneurs to meet, mingle or bring their laptops and just hang out in the company of other entrepreneurs. We are pleased to offer new opportunities and resources that Enrich Inspire and Transform providing more reasons to see you @ the Library.

ADULT PROGRAMS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR’S TESTIMONY Sunday, November 4, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Dr. Mladen Vranić was born in Zagreb in 1930. After the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia, the Vranic family were able to flee to an Italian-controlled zone. They were eventually sent to concentration camps under Fascist Italy’s jurisdiction. Dr. Vranić immigrated to Canada in 1963 and began a distinguished career in diabetes research. He has recently been named as an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contribution to medical research. No registration required. BOARDROOM: The Boardroom seats 18 at the table but the room can accommodate an additional 12 chairs placed around the room. You’ve borrowed books, DVDs, CDs and eReaders from the library before, but how does borrowing an iPad sound to you? Beginning this fall, you will be able to do just that with Vaughan Public Libraries’ (VPL) all new iPad vending machines! VPL is the first library in Canada to feature this state-of-the-art technology. With these machines, you can easily check out an iPad for use in the library with your library card.

Whether you apply for your library card in person or online, you will need to bring one of the following to verify your information: • proof of your home address in Vaughan • registration at a school or college in Vaughan, or • proof of employment in Vaughan Children can get their own library cards. If they are 13 years old or under, the parent or guardian is required to sign the child’s library card. If you don’t qualify for free membership as described above, you can still join VPL. Visitors to VPL You don’t have to have a library card to visit branches of Vaughan Public Libraries to consult library staff or use the print collections on site. If you don’t have a card and wish to use the library’s electronic resources, please bring with you valid identification, including your address (e.g. your driver’s licence). Library Services All branches have materials for reference and loan. The most comprehensive reference collections are held at Bathurst Clark Resource Library and the Pierre Berton Resource Library. Books, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Videos and CDs are all available in many languages to meet the needs of our diverse community.

Vaughan Public Libraries now offers a new and convenient Books by Mail service. For a fee of $6 per shipment, your items will be sent right to your doorstep. Qualified staff are always on site in each library to assist you in your search for information. They are also available to advise on leisure reading or on materials appropriate to your child’s reading abilities. Some libraries have study rooms available for groups or individual study and all libraries have meeting rooms available for booking by the public. Pierre Berton Resource Library has both a boardroom and a training suite available for rent. Details of all these services are available from the libraries and on the website. All libraries provide free access to the Internet and to PCs equipped with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Wireless access is available in all libraries. Early literacy stations are available for pre-schoolers to learn basic computer and literacy skills. Each library has black and white photocopiers. Colour photocopiers are available at the Resource Libraries. Library Services by Phone Telephone service is available at each branch during open hours. You can even submit your reference inquiries by email and get an answer within a few hours, 24/7.
