Welcome Greetings from
Devender Sandhu Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board
Welcome to What’sOn at the Library. The City of Vaughan’s Council appointed a new 20-member Library Board. I am pleased to announce that Rose Savage has been elected Vice-Chair and Ugo Di Federico Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee. I would like to congratulate the team of librarians from Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) who were awarded the prestigious Angus Mowat Award of Excellence for their innovative Digital Outreach initiative. The award presented annually by the Minister of Tourism, Culture & Sport recognizes a commitment to excellence in the delivery of public library service. In addition, I am delighted to share that Margie Singleton, VPL’s CEO was elected Chair of the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries. These are indeed outstanding achievements for Vaughan Public Libraries. Einstein reflected that: We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library, whose walls are covered to the ceiling with books in many different languages. The child knows that someone must have written those books. He does not know who or how. Pleasant Ridge Library, which opened recently, brings that reality into existence. It is a vibrant marketplace with children in every corner enjoying new books and space to get enriched and inspired. Kleinburg Library recently re-opened following a beautiful renovation and the Civic Centre Resource Library (CCRL) is transcending into reality with construction in full swing, on time and within budget. Keep up to date on new libraries being built and renovations to existing branches through VPL’s Building Projects Blog at www.vaughanpl.info/building.

Teen Summer Reading Challenge Returns! Last year, you read over 260,000 pages in the Teen Summer Reading Challenge (TSRC). This summer, we challenge YOU, the Teens of Vaughan*, to read a total of 500,000 pages over the summer! Now, we’re not expecting you to read 500,000 pages all on your own – all of the teens in Vaughan need to read a combined total of 500,000 pages. Got it? Good. Want to win an iPad mini? For every 100 pages you read and log this summer on the TSRC site you will earn one ballot towards VPL’s end of summer TSRC Draw. The winner of the draw walks away with their own iPad Mini! And because we are the library, we’re also giving away a prize for the top reader in Vaughan, because, reading!!
How do I participate? Visit www.vaughanpl.info to access the TSRC site. Create an account and every time you read a book over the summer, login to update the title and number of pages you've read. The challenge begins July 1st. Still not enough? For all of July and August, see how well you recognize the latest teen reads and unscramble images in our Guess the Cover Contest! Every correct answer earns you one ballot towards a draw for a prize package at the end of the summer. Watch for more details on these great contests at : www.vaughanpl.info and on the Teen Vortex. Contests run from July 1 to August 30. Winners will be notified by September 14th. *ages 13 to 18 (and 12, if you’re turning 13 this year!)
