What’s New DO YOU NEED HELP CHOOSING YOUR NEXT READ?
Greetings from
Michael McKenzie Chair, Vaughan Public Library Board
Welcome to the latest issue of What’sO What’sOn. In this edition I would like to take a moment to thank all employees of Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) for their contribution to the delivery of VPL programs and services. A look back at our 2012 statistics reveals that we had record program attendance at 98,265. That is almost equal to every third person in the City of Vaughan attending a VPL program in 2012! We also circulated over 2.8 million items and recorded 2.2 million in-person or digital visits. The achievement of these numbers would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of all VPL employees. On behalf of the Board and the citizens of Vaughan, I would like to extend a sincere Thank You to all VPL staff. I would also like to recognize the contributions of our 2012 Bronze Award recipients. Over 60 staff members were nominated by their peers for initiatives that were recognized with Bronze Awards. We applaud the achievements of our Bronze Award recipients and hope that through the efforts of our staff, we are able to inspire you to discover new opportunities to Enrich Inspire Transform.

fter decades of service and years of watching her family’s troubles splashed across the tabloids, Britain’s Queen is beginning to feel her age. She needs some cheering up and decides to visit Britannia, the former royal yacht now anchored near Edinburgh and the site of many happy memories. Hidden beneath a hoodie, Elizabeth walks out of Buckingham Palace and heads for a public train at King’s Cross. But a characterful cast of royal attendants has discovered her missing. In uneasy alliance a lady-in-waiting, a butler, an equerry, a girl from the stables, a dresser, and a clerk from the shop that serves Her Majesty’s cheese set out to find her and bring her back before her absence becomes a national scandal. Comic and poignant, fast paced and clever, Mrs Queen Takes the Train is a delightful debut novel that tweaks the pomp of the British monarchy, going beneath its rigid formality to reveal the human heart of the woman at its center.
William Kuhn
Want to win a Kobo Arc? If you are the top reader in Vaughan, you will win your very own Kobo Arc! There will also be prizes for the second and third place winners!
Join us in this year’s summer reading staff picks!
Mrs ueen Takes the Train
So to clarify, that doesn’t mean you alone have to read 1,000,000 pages… no no no… it means that ALL teens in Vaughan must collectively read 1,000,000 pages. Got it? Oh, and if you beat THIS challenge, WE, the librarians will dress up for an entire week in a fashion that YOU choose! But that’s not all...
This summer, let the library help you escape into your imagination with our Summer Shortlist! Join a family vacation in Italy. Discover how the past is influenced by the present through an award-winning saga spanning more than 100 years. Follow the Queen as she walks out of Buckingham Palace and slips away to Scotland without telling her staff. Help a new employee determine why the bookstore’s regular customers never seem to buy anything yet they keep coming back. Imagine the consequences for a Jewish midwife who is asked to defy Papal law which forbids Jews to give Christians medical aid when she delivers a Count’s firstborn son.
EAN
The TSRC is now in its fourth year at Vaughan Public Libraries, and YOU, the teens of Vaughan, continue to beat the challenge! That means that WE, the librarians, have been left with no choice but to up the ante. Soooo, this summer, we challenge YOU, the teens of Vaughan ages 13 to 18, to read…. ONE MILLION PAGES!
