Dear Friends and Colleagues, I’m incredibly excited to share with you this year’s annual report for the Professional Pest Management Alliance, an organization that is so near and dear to my heart for the incredible work it does on behalf of our industry through its consumer marketing and education programs. PPMA is the real deal and a true advocate for the professional pest control community, communicating and engaging with today’s consumer audiences to tell our industry’s story. We work to promote, protect and defend the professional pest control industry and ignite market growth by educating both residential and commercial audiences about the importance and genuine value of professional pest control services. It’s hard to believe that we have been working at this for about 25 years now — working hard to preserve and protect the industry, and in turn, our livelihoods. But I guess it’s true what they say that time really does fly when you’re having fun. Put simply, PPMA has been working for our future. Now, when I think of the future and the legacy I’m working to build with my company, I know what motivates me. I do it for my beautiful wife, my three amazing children and the brood of grandkids they are raising up. I do it to honor my late father and my loving mother, who worked so hard to give my brothers and I the opportunity to carry on the family business they established in 1949. It’s my dream to give that same opportunity to my children and grandchildren — to set them up for success with a strong and stable business in a healthy and thriving industry. That’s my story about my family, but what’s yours? You see, not only is this industry one big family but it’s also comprised of many types of families. There are corporate families with core values that make employees feel both connected and respected; the supplier families that empower us with the right tools to do our jobs well and service our customers; and then there are the family-owned businesses with generations working side-by-side to build and grow something good. And of course, we all have our own respective families that we come home to at the end of each day that drive and inspire us.
Just like we work hard to ensure bright and strong futures for our families, PPMA is doing the same for all businesses in this industry. PPMA is funded 100% through voluntary donations from generous pest control firms and members of the supplier community. The work that we do on your behalf elevates the entire industry and benefits us all, because when the market grows, we too grow along with it. Not only is PPMA providing modern marketing programs to educate and inform consumers, but we also provide marketing solutions for all our investors through our digital marketing service, Mainframe.

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Stakeholder, As we move into the third year of a pandemic, we all recognize that it changed our industry and the way we do business with our customers, perhaps indefinitely. In 2021, we were reminded of the resilience of the pest management industry and celebrated our ability to adapt and overcome a myriad of challenges. You all continue to make it happen for your customers, protecting their food, health and property for homes and businesses nationwide. Despite the challenges of 2021, the pest management industry grew 3% as the market prevailed. And, did you know Pest Control Technology Magazine recognizes the critical work of PPMA as a leading cause for our industry’s incredible growth? Isn’t that both powerful and amazing? Our mission is to grow, promote, protect and defend the professional pest control industry to both residential and commercial audiences. This annual report showcases all of the ways your PPMA has been hard at work for you throughout 2021 to do that, and more.

As you may know, we continually survey consumers in the United States to understand their attitudes and usage of pest control services. From our in-depth generations research to our quick polls, PPMA has its finger on the pulse of your customers and consumers nationwide. In fact, a recent poll showed that more than 2-in-5 homeowners (41%) noticed an increase in pest activity over the past year as a result of being home more due to the pandemic. These findings also revealed that more than 8-in-10 respondents (85%) have seen or had trouble with bugs, insects, or rodents over the past year. Our industry continues to prove its necessity to society, and PPMA is always there to keep pest control top of mind with the public at large. PPMA also works to deliver high-impact and truly incredible content to consumer audiences. We launched our “Out of Sight” series which shows what happens when the lights turn off and rodents and cockroaches are left to freely scurry about. We also debuted TickTalk.org, which features amazing visuals and essential information on ticks as a public health pest. Combined, these large-scale projects empowered us to
capture photography and video to produce visual storytelling content, emphasizing the health implications of pests in and around the house or business and the importance of working with a pest control professional. And from one Tick Talk to another, the powerhouse social media platform TikTok has taken the world by storm and has proven to be advantageous in our awareness efforts. Since our official launch in April of 2021, the PPMA TikTok account has truly taken off. One video of a bed bug hatching went viral and amassed over 2.2 million views! We are thrilled to lean into this growing platform and find even more creative ways to showcase our industry and the value it provides to homeowners. We continued to drive a steady stream of media placements throughout the year, securing almost 1,200 consumer print, online and broadcast media placements and delivering 642 million impressions. Our social media platforms generated over 12 million organic impressions, driven by our robust digital strategy, engaging content and effective advertising. Additionally, PestWorld.org and PestWorldForKids.org continued to add fresh, new content, producing over 8 million total sessions. This critical work is only made possible because of the generous contributions of hundreds of companies who recognize the significant impact of their participation and I sincerely thank you. As we embark on 2022 and another year that is certain to be filled with uncertainties, we celebrate a major milestone — PPMA’s 25 years of consumer marketing outreach programs supporting growth in your industry and your business with an eye towards the future. Big Thinking for Big Impact
TICK TALK Last May, we embarked on a mission to take ownership of the conversation about ticks, address confusion about vector pests and raise awareness of the dangers associated with tickborne disease. We launched this week-long initiative during our inaugural Tick Awareness Week, making a huge splash with a robust media relations push and our corresponding launch of the much-anticipated microsite, TickTalk.org. Our Tick Talk campaign provided consumers with a one-stop-shop to learn all there is to know about proper tick prevention and identification. As a result of our outreach, Tick Awareness Week was included in a syndicated broadcast segment airing across 30 stations alongside articles we secured in The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and a guest contributor segment on TODAY. In tandem, we tailored our social media strategy across our channels, generating over 100,000 impressions across Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest. As for paid support, we launched a Facebook advertising campaign, which captured an impressive 1.2 million impressions and 2,500 landing page views, as well as a tick-specific content syndication campaign, totaling 11 million impressions and over 28,000 clicks. Across the board, our ongoing media relations and social media efforts helped TickTalk.org to garner over 70,000 sessions in 2021.

OUT OF SIGHT You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? Well, we took that to a whole new level with our Out of Sight project to truly show all the debris and bacteria that could be spread by pests. To shine a spotlight on the health and property threats posed by rodents and cockroaches, we captured video footage using fluorescent powder to expose the “hidden” trails left behind as these pests traversed a kitchen and bathroom undisturbed. This jaw-dropping videos series, accompanied by a new interactive microsite, shows what happens when the lights are turned off to drive awareness around proper rodent and cockroach control. To bring attention to the project, we conducted a national media push, securing Dr. Jim Fredericks a segment with Scripps about rodent and roach prevention tips, which aired across 10 different stations. We also used organic social media content and Facebook advertising campaigns to drive conversations and traffic, which amassed an impressive 32,500 impressions and 7,200 landing page views. For even more of a boost, we leveraged a rodent and cockroach-centric content syndication campaign, yielding 10.1 million impressions and 26,300 clicks in two short months. At the end of 2021, the Out of Sight microsite saw a total of 31,000 sessions.

MESMERIZING MICROSITES As part of our campaign launches, PPMA created microsites for Tick Talk and Out of Sight. Both websites house captivating photography and video, a wealth of information on their respective pests and links directing consumers to find a pest control professional that also drives referral traffic to the main PestWorld.org website. These microsites, as with previous campaigns, will continue to be used in PPMA marketing efforts to promote one-stop resources for consumers, industry professionals and members of the media.

PPMA works hard each and every day to tell your story to consumer audiences and speaks in a unified voice to advocate for partnering with a pest control professional. Our consumer media relations efforts had a banner year with nearly 1,200 media placements in national and regional markets across the country, resulting in over 642 million impressions. In other words, our impressions nearly doubled the U.S. population. We were featured as a Guest Contributor on NBC’s “Today Show,” a recurring guest on the Weather Channel and appeared in USA Today, the Washington Post and on ABC’s “Good Morning America” to name a few. News desks were hungry for pest-related content this year, showing serious interest in our proprietary pest forecasts, PPMA-designated annual awareness weeks and the exciting buzz surrounding seasonal pests and the reemergence of Brood X cicadas.

PREDICTING PEST PRESSURE BUG BAROMETER® Year after year, folks across the country look to PPMA’s bi-annual Bug Barometer® forecast to help gauge pest pressure in their region. With the help of NPMA’s certified entomologists, we released the results of the much-anticipated regional predictions for the fall and winter season, which received nationwide media attention. On a local level, Michael Bentley, Ph.D., was interviewed for a segment on WTTG-TV to discuss the predictions for the Washington, D.C. area. In March, findings from the spring and summer 2021 predictions hit the airwaves through a variety of regional broadcast segments as experts foresaw a pest-packed fall. In the months to follow, media outlets continued to source these reports in news coverage, generating more than 46 media wins and 20.2 million impressions in total.

VECTOR SECTORS™ PPMA’s bi-annual Vector Sectors™ report shines a spotlight on the top 10 U.S. cities expected to experience increased vector pest pressure in a given season. In its fourth year, this sought-after watchlist made national headlines, securing coverage in Reader’s Digest and AOL. In March, Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., spoke with PennLive about the predictions, noting ticks and rodents as a particular concern for the Pennsylvania region. With 3 major media wins, these bi-annual reports netted over 3.4 million impressions.

EDUCATING OUR COMMERCIAL PARTNERS COMMERCIAL MEDIA OUTREACH Our commercial media relations program had an exceptional year as we secured 29 media placements in various commercial market publications which resulted in 143,500+ impressions. That’s more than double the number of fans that can be seated in Lincoln Financial Field stadium in Philadelphia, PA! Several placements were generated by securing a reoccurring column in QA: Quality Assurance & Food Safety Magazine. Other notable coverage included bylines in Lodging Magazine and Food Safety Magazine. Coverage throughout the year spanned a variety of topics and industries, including lodging, buildings and facilities management, food processing and safety, and more.
COMMERCIAL IPM COLLATERAL Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a commonsense way for a commercial business to address its pest problems. We created these IPM one-sheets to share best practices to help protect businesses from the threats of a pest infestation and for investors to utilize them in their own marketing efforts to new and existing customers. One-sheets were created for the following industries: Food Processing, Grocery Stores, Hospitals, Hotels, Multifamily Housing, Office Buildings, Restaurants, Schools and Self-storage.

DRIVING TRAFFIC TO CONSUMER WEBSITES 2021 OVERVIEW In a fast-moving digital landscape, PPMA utilizes two main consumer education websites on behalf of the industry to reach consumers — both residential and commercial audiences alike —about the importance of professional pest control and to share information about pests. Using search engine optimization (SEO) efforts and ongoing content development, PestWorld.org and PestWorldForKids.org recorded more than 8 million sessions in 2021 — nearly three times the number of tourists that visit Mount Rushmore every year. In addition to Pest Guides and timely editorial articles, including those on the topic of the Brood X cicada emergence, PPMA expanded the interactive Pest in the House pages and developed a new landing page template for special observances on PestWorld.org. For parents, teachers and children, PestWorldForKids. org has remained a fun platform for safe and ad-free learning, allowing kids to explore the world of pests. In fact, it’s a trusted resource used by teachers via online platforms such as Clever, Google Classroom, Schoology and Seesaw. While games tend to be the favorite of site visitors, Pest Guides were also one of the top visited sections of the site in 2021.

MASTERING DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT ORGANIC RESULTS PPMA maintained notable momentum across our ever-growing suite of social media channels, generating over 12.2 million organic impressions across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and TikTok combined — that’s a 35% increase YoY!
TESTING OUT TIKTOK This year, we even took our digital expertise one step further by dipping into social media’s trendiest platform, TikTok. In just 9 months, our TikTok page gained over 25,100 followers, 112,000 likes and over 3.2 million video views. As we continue to navigate this up-and-coming app, we’ve learned just how much TikTok users crave educational and equally skin-crawling content, which PPMA has aplenty in our expansive video library. From our “Will They Eat It?” series and Metal Ant Nest videos to off-the-cuff stinging insect footage, PestWorld’s TikTok videos always spark an interest from viewers, who often share their amazement (and shock) in the comments section. In fact, our quick-hitting video of a bed bug hatching generated over 2.2 million views and 45,100 likes. Safe to say, we’ve found our niche on TikTok and can only imagine the buzz we’ll create with the list of extraordinary videos we have on the docket for 2022.

FACEBOOK LIVE CHATS Throughout the pandemic, Facebook Live Chats allowed our experts to connect with online users regarding relevant and interesting topics. In 2021, the emergence of Brood X periodical cicadas dominated headlines. Lucky for us, the epicenter of the emergence was close to the NPMA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia. Staff entomologists were able to get up close and personal with the cicadas and educate viewers on what to expect in their area. Later in the year, our team hosted live chats to highlight our various awareness weeks and introduce new projects like Tick Talk and Out of Sight. In 2021, these interactive chats spurred authentic user engagement, generating over 78,000 impressions and nearly 40,000 video views while continuing to establish the @PestWorld account as a trusted and helpful resource.

SERVING UP PAID CONTENT SOCIAL MEDIA ADVERTISING As we continue to expand our online presence, social media advertising remains an effective tool in our digital strategy across various platforms. To complement our organic initiatives, PPMA’s paid campaigns on Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest and TikTok have helped us connect directly with relevant audiences in today’s digitally connected world, all while boosting valuable traffic to our consumer websites. Excitingly, we launched our first-ever TikTok ad campaigns, which proved successful in driving website traffic and user engagement. In total, our paid campaigns accounted for an outstanding 40.2 million impressions. To put that into perspective, that’s roughly 5 times the amount of people living in New York City!
CONTENT SYNDICATION Sponsored content appears on third-party media websites and is often the next stop users make after reading an article from their go-to media source. PPMA continues to run content syndication campaigns year-round to drive traffic to our websites. Campaigns are designed to educate our target audiences about seasonal pest threats and bring awareness to new project microsites. In 2021, our campaigns yielded over 96 million impressions — that’s a 42% increase compared to our grand total in 2020. Beyond leveraging our expansive website resources to reach new and engaged audiences, our content syndication campaigns further establish NPMA as the trusted resource on all things pests by placing our educational content on popular news sites, including MSN, CNN, Yahoo! News and FOX News, among others.

CONSUMER RESEARCH PPMA regularly conducts a series of polls and surveys to better understand consumer attitudes as well as perceptions and usage of pest control services. This consumer research provides tactical guidelines to resonate with various audiences. Buying Habits Across Generations In early 2021, PPMA surveyed a nationwide sample of homeowners using our quantitative approach to create consumer profiles for each generation and define communication preferences, level of interest in service offerings, and other specific areas relevant to the industry. Online Polling PPMA also polls Americans about their usage of pest control services in addition to a variety of other seasonal pest topics to help with its consumer campaigns and media outreach. One such survey found that working with a pest control professional had never been more top-of-mind for American homeowners in summer and fall of 2021. As many returned to the workplace, concerns of increased pest infestations began to creep in.
When selecting a pest control professional, being bonded/insured is of particular importance to Baby Boomers 42% of Baby Boomers, while want a pro to be trustworthiness is the most BONDED/ important for 42% of Millennials. INSURED

As an organization, we are continually adapting to the ever-changing technological landscape of this century. With our Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered research in our toolbox, we’re able to analyze consumer behavior to determine the most problematic pests nationwide as well as any potential health and home threats. PPMA compiles these findings into easily digestible reports, which are readily available to Mainframe subscribers, to keep industry members abreast of the latest pest trends and aid companies in their decision-making processes and marketing strategies.

We received tremendous support from PSA Directors at hundreds of local affiliates and national networks last year with more than 137,000 TV and radio PSA airings, tallying nearly 388 million impressions. What’s more, our PSAs have been seen and heard in 100% of the Top 50 media markets and in 99% of the Top 100!
