CHAIRMAN’S REPORT With the AGM behind us, I am pleased to advise that we have an almost complete committee to see us through the next twelve month’s programme. A rather obvious exception is a vacancy ROSS BUTLER under the heading of Club Captain. Chairman This is unfortunate as the job of club ph 03 352 3160 captain is to oversee and coordinate motoring and general organised activities. I have seen and been impressed by the way that some members of the previous committee have worked to ensure that the various events went ahead without any obvious hitches and I believe that we are indeed fortunate to have the support of Dave Inwood, who while not actually on the committee, using his knowledge and skills from his previous experience is working with us to keep events running smoothly. We would welcome anyone who could be interested in taking up the position of Club Captain and I would be very happy to discuss with them what is involved. Anyone considering this has our assurance that they would have the support of the entire committee. In the meantime, our gratitude is owed to all those who made themselves available to make up the committee for the coming year, thank you. Following on from the AGM, publication and distribution of The Hub and its associated costs are continuing under review. Bearing in mind that it is an essential part in communicating with all members, we will be doing whatever we can to keep it alive and well and in whatever format is best suited.

SECRETARY’S REPORT I still have trouble getting my head around 82 members attending the AGM out of nearly 1300! Stats From 8 August 2019 to 7 July 2020: Deceased 15, Resigned 22, Unfinancial 26. I would like to thank those on the committee who helped make this year’s AGM a success.

ROD THROWER Secretary ph 03 338 2320

Also a special thanks to those members that came and contributed to the proceedings in whatever way they felt was appropriate at the time. Thanks also to Doug Watkinson and Chris Parker again for their door check duty, Annette and Lindsay Painter for the wonderful fresh cream scones. I know that the addition of Katryna Shaw onto the committee is going to make for a strong team going forward under the leadership of Ross. The Branch Committee are very pleased to congratulate Chris Leith on his election to the National Executive as Secretary/Treasurer Elect. Well done Chris.

OLD CARS, BIKES AND COFFEE We had another great day on 18th July, with around 50 cars turning up - down slightly on last month because of the cold and damp weather. Great to see lots of enthusiasm from all taking part, and some really interesting vehicles turning up. Best of all, lots of comments about the need to keep this event going (it was a trial until July pre-COVID), so we will be doing just that. The next OCBC is on Sunday 16th August - just arrive any time from 9.00am and leave whenever you like. Note that the Parts Shed is also open, so you can do both. Colin Hey

LETTER TO EDITOR

This engine came from the Joyce brothers of Christchurch when their property was being cleared out. The two brothers raced at Cust on their Velocettes but the engine came from their father or grandfather. It has all veteran parts with JAP barrel and some Triumph bits. The crankcase appears to have been locally cast. As my intention is to install the engine in a suitable frame (when I find one) I would be interested in any information on the brothers or their family. One brother may still be alive but in a home. The engine would be one of the very few made here and deserves to be seen and heard. Thanks Chris chris.parker.chch@gmail.com 03351 1084 027 658 3537

The Swap Meet committee is now well up to speed, and organising Swap Meet 2020 is progressing. Rosters for the various duties are now available at Noggins and other branch events, so please step up and put your name to a duty for an hour or so - there is nothing particularly hard or onerous to do, but every member must be responsible to offer some time to this extremely important branch fundraising event. We also need some new sites for our large-format signs, so if you know of any locations where they could be erected on or off stands to publicise the event, please let me know.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section

Now five weeks past the shortest day, just think back to the middle of May for the same length days! PAST EVENTS

8 July – Noggin. I forgot clean about it, but apparently about 20 turned up to garage raid a place near The Junction, Addington. An eclectic collection of a few rare cars and bikes (all Japanese, no British), plus the odd example of fairground memorabilia. 25 July – Fish & Chip Run. Nine bikes braved a very frosty start but the run to the café at the Glentunnel Golf Club was enjoyed in brilliant sunshine. One or two peeled off on the way home to attend the VCC Branch AGM.

FUTURE EVENTS

1 August – Round the Bays Run. Probably in the past when you see this, but starts at PMH Hospital, 10.00 am for a 10.15 am departure. See last Hub for details; Royce Baker (021 323 571) organising, and a back-up being provided. 8 – 9 August - Mid Winter Run (Overnight). The meeting place is Yaldhurst Pub Carpark, 10.00 am for a 10.30 am departure. A circuitous route has been organised out west via the gorges to Methven for lunch, then to Rakaia and Leeston to stay the night at the Crate & Barrel Hotel, Leeston. There are nine motel units at the Crate & Barrel, with various sleeping combinations from 2 to 4 people each, it will be up to you to organise your own reservation. Craig Bradford is the boss there, phone 03 324 4000. The run is about 100 miles, and there may be an organised garage raid in Leeston as well. John Benn, 022 078 2002, is organiser. There is no entry form, just book your accommodation and turn up at the start. Better get A into G if you haven’t booked as the spots are filling... 12 August – Noggin Night. Being held at the Valley Inn, Heathcote Valley, at 7.30 pm. Something different, a nice warm welcoming hostelry. 29 August – Fish & Chip Run. Meet at BP Service Station, Moorhouse/Antigua St corner. 10.15 am meet, 10.30 am depart. Again, riders decide on destination. 8

ADVANCE NOTICE

9 September – Noggin. More next month. 26 September – Fish & Chip Run. 20 September – Ruff Run & Working Bee (pre Swap Meet working bee to tidy the place up…) 9-10-11 October – Swap Meet. Motorcyclists will roster to look after toilets etc. as last year. 17 – 18 October – Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa, Overnight. Organise your own accommodation. That is about it for this month, Keep Warm!

SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2020

Bar opens 6 pm Please be seated for dinner by 6.30 pm The dinner is held annually to present branch members 25, 35, 50 and 60-year membership awards. Tickets ($35 single) are available from branch committee members and at the bar at Noggins from August. The meal will be catered by our very own Annette and Lindsay Painter – who know just what we like. There will be plenty for all. If there are any special dietary requirements, contact Leigh 342 9110 or craythornes@actrix.co.nz as soon as possible. This year, our National President Diane Quarrie will be presenting the awards. Come along and support your fellow members on their special night. 9

Plan B worked a treat In place of the hangi we had a pot luck lunch at The Barn. We didn’t have as VCC CANTERBURY big a turnout as expected but I put that down to the confusion we had due to WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER! having to change plans. We still had 25 cars and a good raffle although it JOHN KUIPERS didn’t make a profit this time. Next time 9-90’s better. The team had The Barn cosy Coordinator and warm, hot water, coffee and tea on tap, a great atmosphere and I think we have a new member to join the club. The effort some people put in so we could enjoy a nice home-made pot luck was amazing. Puddings and trifle, savoury items and sandwiches. There was not much left over. Thank you to you all.

Worth a Watch Julie at National Office had a promo for this movie come across her desk and thought our members might be interested. This documentary follows an eccentric upperclass British couple as they drive their 1936 Rolls-Royce across India. Rupert and Jan Grey are in their sixties, married for 35 years and on the verge of retirement. At a time when most couples are preparing for a simple life, this free-spirited pair ignore everyone’s advice and head off in Rupert’s father’s 1936 Rolls-Royce across India on their way to a photography festival in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Over six months and 5,000 miles they fall into company with teawallah and maharajahs, dodge tribal conflicts, negotiate with border officials and make constant mechanical repairs. Coming to a cinema near you soon. CLUB NOTICES

2020 MOPED RUN

This year the moped run was held separately to our clip-on rally – the event took place on Saturday 14 March 2020 in glorious conditions. Few of us realised that a lock-down was going to curtail all our activities in the near future. Sunshine and next to no wind – the perfect conditions the run which attracted an awesome variety of about half European and half Japanese models. The flat run also provided the perfect opportunity for the club’s Ariel first outing after its extensive repairs. A total of sixteen riders were sent on their way from the Halswell supermarket car park by organiser Kurt Ebrecht. Following the usual tracks along the Old Tai Tapu Road (including a very scenic loop around Rhodes Road) and River Road, the first stop was Selwyn Huts, where Sharon had prepared morning tea with homebaked cinnamon wheels, blueberry muffins and hot and cold drinks. One casualty along the way was last year’s winner Graham Barnett on his Vicky with a flat rear tyre, which was quickly repaired at this stop. The run continued to Laboratory in Lincoln and finally to the Halswell Tavern for prizegiving. The deserved winner of the 2020 trophy was Bruce Miles on his 1957 NSU Quickly. Special thanks again to Sharon for being backup driver and providing a fabulous morning tea.

DAFFODIL RALLY FOR CANCER SUNDAY 23 AUGUST Although not being run as a VCC National initiative this year (because of COVID-19) our branch has decided to run a local event anyway, once again to fundraise for the Canterbury Branch of the NZ Cancer Society. This will be one of several events held around the country on the same day, as other branches have decided to go ahead with local runs as well. All veteran, vintage and classic vehicle owners, including individuals, and member of ALL motoring clubs (including Custom and Hot-Rod Clubs) have also been invited to participate.

NEW FORMAT THIS YEAR This year the format is quite different, in that we have organised four separate meeting places to commence the runs, all of which will arrive in our grounds at Cutler Park in time for lunch. The start points are as follows: •

Rangiora – Pak’n Save Car Park, Southbrook Road

Rolleston – Countdown Rolleston Car Park, Cnr Rolleston Drive and Masefield Drive

• New Brighton – New Brighton Working Mens’ Club car park, Marine Parade •

Cashmere – Cashmere Club Car Park, 50 Colombo Street, Christchurch

You are welcome to join the event at any one of these venues. You will need to arrive between 10.00am and 10.30am, and from there you will be set off on a run that will end at Cutler Park, McLeans Island, around one hour later. All runs will have a long and a short route to cater for all types of vehicles, and all of the runs will cross paths so you will see other vehicles taking part in the event on your trip. All runs will finish at the VCC grounds by around noon. On arrival at the grounds, we will request a $10 donation (more if you wish – it’s a great cause) from each vehicle as it arrives. A barbeque lunch will be run by the Avonhead 14

Rotary Club, with proceeds also going to the Cancer Society. BYO lunch is another option. All vehicles will be lined up for display, to which the general public will be invited. A brief prize giving will be held at 2.30pm, with prizes presented for the following: • Best Motorcycle

• Peoples’ Choice

• Best Veteran Car

• Most Unique Vehicle – judged by a representative from the Cancer Society

• Best Vintage Car • Best Classic Car • Most Impressive Chrome

• Best Dressed Driver and Passengers (dress in the era or a style to suit your vehicle)

Note that the event will be run wet or fine – the clubrooms will be open to provide shelter if needed. Event Coordinator for VCC Canterbury Branch is Colin Hey – Phone 03 359-8737 (please call evenings only, after 7.30pm) or email heywolseley699@gmail.com

Malvern Anzac run - rescheduled

MALCOLM MCGIBBON Branch Events Ph 0274 338 047

Like so many other events this year Covid 19 caused the cancellation of the Annual Malvern Run on Anzac Day. Now that some normality has returned, I decided to approach the organisers of the Hororata Highland Games to see if we could play a small part in their event. The date for this is Saturday November 7. Those of you who have been to the games will know what a great day out this is and how fortunate we are to have been accepted by the organisers. Like the Anzac Day Malvern Run, the event will be open to cars and motorcycles of the war years and will be followed on the Sunday by the Annual Vintage and Veteran Rallies. The Malvern Run will once again start at the Darfield Recreation Centre car park and will proceed to the Hororata Cenotaph where the vehicles will be lined up at 10:15 to make the grand entrance and lap of the games oval before being positioned in the display area. Cars entered will not be able to leave before 4pm. Your entry is your commitment to this display. Those of you who have never been to the games can expect a fun day of Highland Games, music to suit all tastes, market stalls, food and drink vendors and so much A Highland Games highlight is more. the hotly contested Kilted Mile. Entries will open in September, don’t be late with your entry because they may be limited. For any enquiries prior contact me on 0274 338 047
